Leaked Sprint WiMAX roadmap names new cities for 2009 rollout
Well, what do we have here? One of our readers sent us a screenshot from Sprint's Sales Portal that included the above roadmap for its WiMAX rollout this year. A number of the yet-to-be-launched cities we've already heard about -- Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Charlotte -- but to the best of our knowledge, the rest of them are brand new entries. Additionally, Baltimore residents can look forward to some sort of coverage update in the fourth quarter. GCO: Fortsetzung im nächsten Jahr
In einem weiteren interessanten Artikel der heutigen Ausgabe der Leipziger Volkszeitung wird zum ersten Mal von einer Neuauflage der Games Convention Online gesprochen. So sagt der Chef der Leipziger Messe Wolfgang Marzin gegenüber der Zeitung: “Wir planen, die Games Convention Online mittelfristig durchzuführen und der Branche eine eigene Plattform zu geben.”

Apple verbessert Programmportal für iPhone-Entwickler
Apple hat das Portal zum AppStore für iPhone-Entwickler in zweierlei Hinsicht verbessert. Zum Ersten wird den Entwicklern nun ein Ausblick gegeben, wie lange es voraussichtlich dauern wird, bis ein neues Programm oder ein Update von Apple für den Vertrieb freigegeben wird. Momentan sind dies laut der Angabe auf der Seite in etwa 14 Tage. Zweitens gibt es nun auf der Seite eine zentrale Email-Adresse für dringliche Anfrage, beispielsweise

GCO: Randalierer geschnappt
In der heutigen Ausgabe der Leipziger Volkszeitung ist zu lesen, dass die hinabgestürzte Scheibe auf der Leipziger Messe auf das Konto eines Steine werfenden Jugendlichen geht. Er wurde gefasst und wird zur Verantwortung gezogen. Glücklicherweise ist niemand zu Schaden gekommen.

Video zeigt Joypad für das iPhone
Vielportierer ZodTTD (Quake, psx4iphone) hat in seiner Kiste mit alten Gadgets herumgewühlt und den Prototypen vom iJoyPad herausgeholt. Nach seinen Angaben war das mittlerweile eingestellte iJoyPad ein Konkurrent zu dem immer noch nicht erschienenen iControlpad. Mit dem Pad am iPhone spielt er Ridge Racer und WipeOut XL unter der PlayStation-Emulation.

Apple führt Warteschlangeninfo für Entwickler ein
Kleine Änderungen sollen das Entwicklerleben etwas einfacher gestalten. So gibt nun der "App Store Review Status" an, wie lange die Prüfzeit für einen bestimmten Prozentsatz eingereichter Anwendungen ist. Es ist also eine Aussage darüber, wie ausgelastet das Prüfteam ist - aber wer etwas komplexeres als eine App mit hustenden Katzen einreicht, wird wohl ohnehin zu dem kleineren Prozentsatz gehören, der länger warten muss.

FCC look into Apple's rejection of Google Voice app
rejection of Google's Voice app from the App Store has begun to raise questions and prompted the FCC to launch an inquiry--although no formal investigation has been launched. According to the WSJ, the government agency is looking into why Apple rejected Google's Internet-telephony software for the popular iPhone. The report says that letters were sent late Friday to the two companies and AT&T Inc.

Analyst claims first hand knowledge of Apple gaming, home media center tablet
Barron's is reporting that an un-named analyst has seen Apple's forthcoming tablet and expects it to be announced in September with a ship date around November. They mention that Apple is such a bellwether for the industry that all other manufacturing in this area has stopped until Apple releases this product. They expect the product to retail for $700-$800 and fulfill a variety of multimedia functions including AppleTV and Gaming.
One veteran analyst who has seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple says the device could be announced in September for release in November.

Urban Mole robot could deliver your mail via insane network of underground tubes
Designer Phillip Hermes has come up with a new system to transport packages which, if ever instituted, could probably be much faster than any of today's available options (trucks, mailmen, airplanes, ponies). Minigore für iPhone im Kurztest
Mountain Sheep aus Finnland haben über den Publisher Chilingo ihren Titel Minigore in den App Store gebracht. Der Titel tritt in die Fußstapfen von iDracula, verfügt aber über ein ganz anderes Setting und ist wohl nicht mehr als ein Appetizer auf das, was da im dritten Quartal noch kommen soll.

Logic 9 Works on PM G5!
When Logic 9 was released, many users complained that the suite was not officially reported to be working on G5-based computers. However, when looking at the "Read Me" file, one can see the following information:
Of course, the software can be installed and launched on G5-based hardware, however performance will not be optimized and today's CPU are faster than the latest best G5. Some users suspect that Apple acted this way to boost sales of its desktop models, while other, including us, think that Apple does not want to officially support this software on G5 hardware while Snow Leopard (Intel CPU only Mac OS X) is around the corner.

Heute mittag hat der Veranstalter der GCO die ersten Besucherzahlen bekannt gegeben. So sind zur Halbzeit 28.000 Besucher auf der Leipziger Messe erschienen. iJoyPad demoed on iPhone 3GS, full screen PSX games looking rather sweet
The iJoyPad has been floating around for a bit now, but we've never seen a full demo of the add-on gamepad. Well, it's back in a video demoing its performance on an iPhone 3GS, using the psx4iphone emulator in full screen glory. The demo shows off Wipeout XL and Ridge Racer performing quite quickly and smoothly, and the iJoyPad itself seems totally functional -- and while it's a tiny bit clunky looking as far as we're concerned, we'd still like to swipe one for ourselves. iPhone (3G/S): Kauf von Filmen über iTunes derzeit nicht möglich
Unser Leser Marc hat uns auf Folgendes hingewiesen:
Wer “iTunes” auf dem iPhone (3G/S) startet und darüber einen Film kaufen oder auch nur die Vorschau ansehen möchte, der kommt seit ein paar Tagen nicht weiter.
Selbst die Vorschau ist nicht möglich, der “Kaufen” Knopf komplett verschwunden.
Wir konnten das Problem nachvollziehen und bitten unsere Leser um einen Test - und einen kurzen Kommentar ob es funktioniert.

Non-existant Blackberry to get front-facing camera for video conferencing, just like non-existant iPhone
In an interview with a RIM representative, Jason Wilk from Tinycomb.com pulled some interesting information about upcoming Blackberries, including the following about front-facing cameras for video conferencing:
I asked him what RIM planned to do if the iPhone were to have upgraded their hardware to include a front-facing camera. His response was “as I said before, we are fortunate to have our relationships with many different carriers, some of which can handle something like live video-conferencing”. FCC untersucht Google Voice App-Ablehnung
Im Falle der Ablehnung und Löschung von auf Google Voice basierenden iPhone Apps hat sich nun die US-amerikanische Regulierungsbehörde FCC eingeschaltet. Laut Wall Street Journal wurde eine Untersuchung eingeleitet, außerdem gingen am späten Freitag Aufforderungen zur Stellungnahme an Apple, AT&T und Google heraus. First broadband over power lines working spec released
It's been a long slow go for broadband over power lines, but it looks like things are finally picking up steam -- an IEEE working group has completed main development of the standard and released the first draft of technical specs. T-Mobile erwirkt Einstweilige Verfügung gegen Vodafone
Vorgestern kamen Gerüchte über eine von T-Mobile erwirkte Einstweilige Verfügung gegen Vodafone auf. Hintergrund ist, dass Vodafone offiziell seit Anfang Juli in einer Vermittlerrolle Kunden, die ein iPhone kaufen möchten, an Partnershops verleitet. Am heutigen Samstag bin ich hoffnungsvoll zum Leipziger Messegelände gefahren. Das Wochenende sollte mehr Besucher auf die GCO bringen. Kabel Deutschland sperrt Eve Online aus
Seit gestern, dem 31. Juli, ist allen Kabel-Deutschland-Kunden der Zugang zu Eve Online verwehrt. Betroffen ist dabei nicht nur das MMORPG selbst, sondern auch die Internetseite zum Spiel. FCC untersucht Entfernung von Google-Voice-Anwendungen

Huge expectation that Russia would prove an incredibly lucrative market for Apple’s iPhone have been dashed. Gloomy reports claim Apple’s three carriers there are unable to meet sales quotas, and are receiving a steely response from Cupertino to their requests for subsidies, lower prices or some kind of carrot to win over Russian consumer hearts and minds.

Apple hire hints European retail expansion intent
Apple has plans to continue expansion of its high street retail presence in Europe and has hired a leading agent to manage mall matters.
The company has hired Chris Braithwaite, a partner at Cushman & Wakefield, to become senior director of European real estate at Apple, Retail Week informs.
Braithwaite has already played a central role in Apple’s retail story since 2005, when the company instructed Cushman & Wakefield to act on its behalf.

iPhone 3.01 update coming this weekend?
The BBC has quoted O2's spokespeople on an upcoming iPhone update scheduled for tomorrow:
An O2 spokesperson said the patch would be available Saturday through iTunes.
"We will be communicating to customers both through the website and proactively," the spokesperson added.

It is a match made in heaven really. The best native Mac feed reader (no offense Vienna, Safari, Mail.app) has always been NetNewsWire. Their online component, NewsGator, has always been a little lacking behind Google Reader, however. That was then, this is now.

Brain Carpet microelectrodes could help translate thoughts into actions more effectively
Researchers at the University of Utah have developed a new, more precise way of placing microelectrodes on the surface of the brain to enable patients to turn thoughts into action. Led by Bradley Greger, a professor of bioengineering, the "Brain Carpet" as it's called, represents a "modest advance" in techniques already in use. The Brain Carpet makes use of smaller microelectrodes, and also employs many more than are usually used. iPhone apps: Roadee, iSpeak, Air Cam Live Video
Roadee ($2) is a navigation tool which uses maps from OpenStreetMap.com. The application can provide directions to any location and includes a search function for finding points of interest in the area. Aside from directions Roadee also provides users with their current speed and can speak directions in English. Additional support for additional languages is planned for future releases.

PS3 manufacturing costs down 70 percent? Strange, it doesn't feel that way
We understand that Sony has a long way to go in making up the losses it's incurred by selling the PS3 at a loss -- even if it was commanding the highest price in the industry the whole while -- but if this latest word on manufacturing costs is correct, we'd say Sony has some room to get the console under that dastardly $400 mark. During an overseas call with investors over Sony's Q1 financials, Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's CFO and Executive VP, apparently stated that manufacturing costs for the PS3 are down 70 percent, which is right "on schedule." While there's no official cost published by Sony, those in the know estimate the console originally cost around $800 to produce, and should be down to roughly $240 at this point. Maybe a h
