RIAA says consumers shouldn't expect DRM servers to run forever
Man, these Copyright Office triennial DMCA hearings seem to be some kind of competition for media-industry lawyer to present ridiculous arguments -- just a couple months after the MPAA tried to convince us that videotaping DVDs was an acceptable alternative to ripping, the RIAA's claiming that consumers shouldn't expect their DRM servers to stay online and allow them to play their music to play forever. No joke. The argument comes as the Copyright Office decides whether or not to allow a DMCA exemption for breaking DRM, and RIAA lawyer Steven Metalitz's position is that copyright owners shouldn't

Student sues Amazon after Kindle eats his homework
It seems we have yet another reason to volley complaints in Amazon's directions. 17-year old high school Justin Gawronski had apparently been taking electronic notes and annotations on his Kindle for a summer assignment on George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. Yeah, you can probably guess where this is going -- after the retailer remotely pulled the plug on that particular version of the book, Gawronski's notes were lost in the ethers, rendered useless. Cydia Store revenue approaches $1/4 million
The Cydia Store is quickly approaching $250,000 in revenue following its opening just over four months ago, according to ModMyi. The third-party app portal for jailbroken iPhones has drawn more than 50,000 purchases. Jay Freeman, Cydia's creator, claims several developers have made over $10,000 in the first week of sales, without going through Apple's App Store.

iPhone boosts Softbank revenue, NTT DoCoMo slides
Japan's largest cellphone carriers experienced contrasting performance in the first fiscal quarter, as the leader NTT DoCoMo reported a slide in net profit by 15 percent to Y147.38 billion (~$1.54 billion USD), according to the Wall Street Journal. You know the drill -- service manuals get posted for new / unannounced products, the kids in the forums pounce, and then Sony makes 'em disappear (the documents, that is -- Sony doesn't rub people out, at least not yet). In this case, user 'berboris' over at The Electronic Book found details for two Sony Readers as yet unheard of: The PRS-300 features a 5-inch display, roughly 440MB storage after system files are accounted for, and that's about it -- no touchscreen, no audio output, no card slots. Panasonic Nanocare administers ionic moisture, placebo effect
The very fact there is a Nanocare range of skin moisturizing gadgets is pretty impressive -- the suits at Panasonic must feel pretty clever trying to sell people on the idea that they need a device capable of generating an "ultra fine nano-particle ion steam," which apparently boils down to mist with a high water content. There's "empirical data" to back this up, but those numbers don't seem to mean much since the EH-SA42 model doesn't even need water to do its magic. You figure that one out. Motorola macht 45 Prozent weniger Handy-Umsatz und hofft auf Android

VUDU's streaming service demoed live on an LG TV
We've seen it in the flesh, and we must say VUDU is doing things right with its move to a device-agnostic service. They haven't chucked a single feature, and the interface is rather responsive for a TV-based video service (though not quite as flashy as its PS3 and Xbox 360 counterparts). Even with a bit of crummy hotel internet getting in the way, the device managed to buffer streams of 720p and 1080p content at a fairly rapid rate -- besting a best-case-scenario Netflix buffer time in most cases. Kaufman reports iPhone 3GS sales above expectations
A report from the Kaufman Bros. research firm is said to indicate a sales shift towards higher-end iPhone models, including the iPhone 3GS, and specifically the $299 32GB model. Samsung's Solstice touchscreen phone bounds onto AT&T
The age of the touchscreen dumbphone is definitely upon us, is it not? Today AT&T and Samsung announced the availability of the Solstice, a phone featuring a 3-inch (presumably resistive) touchscreen, TouchWiz, and lots of funky social networking tie-ins. Still, one gets the overwhelming impression that phones of this ilk are simply trying to cash in on the buzz of like-minded devices, while not bringing anything particularly notable to the table. Don't book your Vegas tickets to CES just yet. Ryan Block of GDGT and Engadget (and CEA advisor) says he was at the same dinner that Ben Charney of the WSJ was at when he got "the tip" that Apple was going to be at CES. IDS Scheer bestätigt Jahresprognose trotz Umsatzrückgang
IDS Scheer hat im zweiten Quartal 2009 89 Millionen Euro umgesetzt, rund 13 Millionen weniger als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres (102,1 Millionen Euro). Apple boosts Time Capsule capacity to 2TB
Apple has quietly upgraded its Time Capsule product, introducing a new higher capacity model, but kept prices unchanged.
The new Time Capsule is available with a 2TB capacity - more than enough to support wireless back-up for multiple Macs. A 1TB model is also available. Prices are $499 (2TB) or $299 (1TB), exactly the same price points as before but with double the capacity.

It still can't multitask, but as of today, it's finally capable of accessing and sharing iDisk files. Apple has at long last let loose a long-awaited application for iPhone OS 3.0 that enables iPhone and iPod touch users with MobileMe accounts to access the inner sanctums of their own iDisk. The app lets you login, view files (up to 20MB or so, sayeth Apple) and share files by sending others a link via email to whatever you deem appropriate. There's also an option to password protect those files and limit the amount of days the download is active, though viewing files is limited to iPhone-supported file types such as iWork, Office, QuickTime, PDF, etc.

Apple has filed a US patent for what appears to be some sort of iPhone nano, potentially confirming months of speculation the company plans to widen its market with introduction of a smaller, cheaper model.

Mit über 65.000 Apps in allen möglichen und unmöglichen Kategorien ist der Wachstumsmarkt für die kleinen Programme offenbar noch immer nicht gesättigt. MobileMe: Zugriff auf die iDisk via iPhone
Nutzer von MobileMe können jetzt auch via iPhone auf ihre iDisk zugreifen. Die bereits vor einigen Wochen angekündigte Apple-eigene App ist gestern abend in den App Store gekommen. Amazon und die Universität Michigan wollen 400.000 seltene Bücher aus der Uni-Bibliothek nachdrucken. Im Autobahnviereck Mannheim-Heilbronn-Karlsruhe-Stuttgart wurde getestet, ob sich diese "mobilen Sensoren" dazu eignen, die Straßenverkehrslage optimal zu erfassen. WSJ: Apple going to CES 2010. Reality: Nope.
This week Gary Shapiro, chief exec of of the CEA (the trade group which puts on CES, and, full disclosure, for which I sometimes consult) held a private dinner with journalists in San Francisco. Nikon D300s officially announced -- 720p/24 movie mode with autofocus and mic input
Well well, Nikon managed to keep the big secret about the new D300s under wraps even as everything else was leaked in the past few weeks: the new $1,799.95 body will shoot 24fps 720p video with contrast-detect autofocus and offers an external mic input. Microsoft and Yahoo! United Against Google
If Microsoft and Yahoo! were recently fighting each other, the second company actively acting to avoid being swallowed by the first one, they have now identified a common target, Google. They signed up an agreement to share their ads and research engine technologies to create a synergy and better compete against the world leader in those fields. In this partnership, Microsoft will manage ads display, while Yahoo! will bring traffic to Redmond's giant. The latest will share part of the revenues with its partner. This agreement allows both companies to look forward without appearing as small player or even insignificant in those 2 specific fields. Will this agreement be fruitful or really compete with Google? Only time will tell us, for sure we will not have to wait for the 10th year of this agreement to evaluate its impact.

Notebook Battery Lifetime: Class Action against Intel
A US citizen decided to initiate a class action against Intel, claiming that the founder is misleading consumers about the battery lifetime of notebook. The plaintiff argues that Intel was using overstated claims regarding battery lifetime, using it as a marketing and selling factors, while not true according to results from MobileMark 2007 benchmarking. This citizen is currently trying to enroll other consumers to get its case evaluated by a court prior being able to launch the legal action.
The point here is that Intel is only providing CPUs and motherboards, and computer companies such as HP, Dell or Apple, are then designing and making notebook models produced, expecting the longest battery lifetime from factors based on optimized system and not necessarily based on a standard and realistic usage. My new MacBook Pro 13", expected to last for 7 hours, could only run for 5 hours because I played with Google SketchUp for 2 hours.

LG releases first official shots of BL40 "New Chocolate"
We've already got a pile of evidence taller than the BL40 itself that told us LG's latest Black Label device was that ultra-wide, glossy red and black slate we've seen floating around -- but now, for the very first time, it's totally official. Sony brings over a million Google Books to the Reader
Cool move by Sony to bolster the number of titles in its Reader ebook store -- it's linked up with Google to provide over a million free public domain works from Google Books, just like those fun folks at Barnes and Noble. Boom! Apple to attend CES '10. Will Steve Jobs headline?
Unless there is a monumental typo here, the WSJ just outted Apple as being an attendee of CES 2010.
Apple plans to attend the show’s 2010 version, marking the first time in memory the Cupertino, Calif., consumer-electronics giant will be there.
You'll remember there was a lot of talk about Apple's intentions after they announced that last years Macworld would be the last one they'd ever attend. Apple remarked that they had better avenues for reaching their customers, like the Apple Store, the weband apparently CES.

Kodak Theatre HD Player updated with YouTube HD, 1080p support
We didn't have a problem playing 30fps 1080p video on the Kodak Theatre HD Player when we tested it back in January, but apparently we were living on the edge -- the box just got an update officially supporting 1080p playback. There's also now YouTube HD support, some basic web browsing ability, and a few other features in the mix, so all in all it's a nice little update for the $200 box with solid codec support and that nifty gyroscopic Pointer Remote. Samsung Unveils Spinpoint F3 HDs
While Western Digital and Seagate chose to offer 2 TB HD spinning at 5,400 RPM, Samsung decided too use also 500 GB/disc, but to offer 1 TB models spinning at 7200 rpm. While having a smaller storage space, performance levels of those drives could be 30% higher than previous models. Intel exec speaks the obvious: first-time buyers aren't going for netbooks
Intel's chief sales and marketing officer Sean Maloney wants you to know something you probably already figured out on your own.
