Issue: Update firmware to prevent "VT-x is locked" error
The virtualization technologies in the Intel CPUs that Apple uses have been greatly welcomed by the Mac community, and have enabled people to run multiple operating systems side-by-side. There is a small issue that may happen with some Macs when launching virtual machines (VMWare, Parallels, or Sun's VirtualBox) where the "VT-x" support is locked and the software will not run.

Palm Pre coming to Europe this fall: Apple importer
The Palm Pre handset will be coming to some European markets by the end of September, says the official distributor of Apple products in Romania, Apcom/IRIS. Zsolt Kadar, the marketing director of Apcom/IRIS, said the late September European availability depends on how well the Pre sells in the US. Palm products are distributed in Romania by Omnisoft, which has not released any statements.

Attention, ergonomics buffs: an advisory recently published by Queensland University of Technology is predicting a rash of injuries as a result of users straining to get a clear look at Apple's "high gloss" screens, and the ergonomically unsound postures and positions that result. The new MacBook Pro with 500GB/7200rpm hard-disk: so much vibrations it feels like a massage
The very day the new MacBook Pros where announced during the WWDC09 Keynote, I ordered on the online Apple store a 15" model with a 2.8GHz CPU and a 500GB/7200rpm hard disk.
8 days later I received my machine, turned it on and had a bad surprise: you can feel the whole case of the computer vibrating. It is so obvious and constant that it makes it a discomfort to use, even after a couple minutes. It is even worse if you type with your palms resting on both sides of the trackpad. And you can even feel the vibrations on the screen case and bezel. And this is even when the machine is idle.
Contacted about this issue, a technician from Apple's French tech support confirmed that they were aware of this and had received and internal support note describing this "behaviour" and explaining that some customers might complain about it, but that it was "normal behaviour" due to the high rotational speed of the disk platers In real life, this normal behavior makes the machine unusable.

2009: The Apple NewtonOS 2.1 Year 2010 bug
For the dedicated Mac users still using the Newton MessagePad as their primary digital personal assistant, a major bug has been reported. According to a report on the issue from 40Hz, "the NewtonOS has a bug in handling years past 18:48:31 on January 5, 2010. The bug is located in the NewtonScript interface of certain time functions, and it is caused by an overflow of a NewtonScript integer value. This bug seems to only occur in NewtonOS 2.1 devices."

Olympus: Micro Four Thirds with EVF enroute

AMD's all about the thin-and-light category with its latest chips, and BenQ is happy to oblige with this new Joybook Lite T131 running AMD's Yukon chipset. iPhone 2G/3G: Freischaltung in OS 3.0 via Software möglich
Morgen ist es soweit: Apple wird über iTunes das neue iPhone OS 3.0 bereitstellen.

Opera stellt Browser mit integriertem Web-Server vor
Mit Opera Unite hat der norwegische Browser-Hersteller Opera eine Lösung vorgestellt, mit welcher der gleichnamige Web-Browser zum Web-Server mutiert. Dazu lassen sich nach einer Registrierung über die Opera-Domain operaunite.com die lokalen Daten des Computers freigeben. Xbox 360 soll neue Hardware erhalten

NVIDIA mit neuen Grafikchips für Notebooks
NVIDIA hat seine Reihe der Grafikchips für Mobilrechner erweitert. Die Grafikchip-Reihe GT200 für Deskop-Rechner wurde an die Anforderungen von Mobilrechnern angepasst und erhält den Namenszusatz M wie "Mobil". Apple will Rechtsstreit gegen Psystar fortführen
Apple hat beim Bezirksgericht im US-Bundesstaat North Carolina die Fortführung des Prozesses gegen den Mac-Klon-Hersteller Psystar beantragt. Dem Anfang Juni eingereichten Schreiben zufolge soll das Gericht die vorläufige Aussetzung des Verfahrens aufheben und Psystar zwingen, zu der ursprünglich für November angesetzten Verhandlung vor Gericht zu erscheinen.

Twitter verschiebt Wartungsarbeiten wegen Wahlen im Iran
NTT America, der Webhoster des Mikroblogging-Diensts Twitter, hat anstehende Wartungsarbeiten verschoben, um die anhaltenden Diskussionen auf Twitter zu den Wahlen im Iran nicht zu stören. Rückgang bei iPod- und Mac-Verkäufen
Den im vergangenen Monat prognostizierten Einbrauch bei den iPod-Verkäufen hat NPD Group nun laut AppleInsider bestätigt. Demnach sind im vergangenen Monat die iPod-Verkäufe um 18 Prozent gesunken. Der Durchschnittspreis für einen iPod ging ebenfalls um 7,5 Prozent zurück. According to AT&T's latest PDF FAQ, they'll offer MMS messages free with a texting plan. There had been concern that AT&T would charge exorbitant rates for the (antiquated?) service. Apple would have transitioned to the Cell processor had it stayed with PowerPC, but too expensive
CNET, on the fourth anniversary of the switch from PowerPC to Intel, interviewed an ex-IBMer who had been familiar with the IBM PowerPC-Apple relations at the time. He/She(/Papermaster?) had some interesting insights into the situation at the time.

PC-Ware knackt die Milliardengrenze
PC-Ware hat jetzt die vorläufigen Zahlen für das am 31. März zu Ende gegangenen Geschäftsjahr 2008/2009 bekanntgegeben. Demnach konnte der Dienstleister und Softwarevermarkter seinen Umsatz im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 14,7 Prozent auf 890,3 Millionen steigern. PC exports to China to potentially be blocked due to pirated filtering software
We're not exactly supportive of the Chinese government requiring new PCs to be imported with content-filtering software, but like we keep saying, karma's a bitch: CyberSitter developer Solid Oak says it's found stolen code inside the Green Dam Youth Escort filtering software mandated by Chinese authorities, and it's considering filing a lawsuit to halt shipments. In the meantime, the company has asked heavy hitters like Dell and HP to refrain from installing Green Dam; Dell says it's still reviewing the Chinese requirements and hasn't yet shipped any machines with the software, but some nine million copies of the software have already gone out. It's official, Olympus' first MIcro Four Thirds camera is up and dancing upon the global stage. Dubbed, E-P1 "digital Pen" (reflecting the camera's Olympus Pen-series heritage) aligns with the looks and specs that came our way yesterday in leaked format. In other words, we're looking at image stabilized (sensor-shift) 12.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor with TruePic V image processing, ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, a 3-inch LCD, 20 shooting modes (5 exposure, i-Auto, and 14 automatic scenes), an SDHC slot, and HDMI TV-out for playback of 720p (1280x720 pixel) recorded video at 30fps. PowerMac G5 and SSD: Performance/Incompatibility Issue?

I want to report the result of my experience with SSDs. I installed two Intel MX25-E 64 GB (OS) and one Intel MX25-M 160 GB (iTunes library etc.) in my Mac Pro Nehalem. I was so please by the result that I decided to install SSD in all my Macs. So, a Vertex 250 GB (firmware 1.30) found its way in my MacBook Pro (2006), and here again I was amazed by the performance gain for booting, opening applications and overall responsiveness. In my PowerMac G5, I installed a Vertex 60G (firmware 1.30), and no real improvement of performance, only a slightly more responsive interface. As I was having a APM partition, I repeat the experience with a GUID setup. The volume does not appear on the bootable unit, nevertheless the computer boots but no improvement. After trying different options, it turns out that a SSD in my PM G5 does not provide a faster system volume than a Raptor 150, while on Mac Intel SSD units h

Verizon launches BlackBerry Tour teaser page
It's hard to believe this is really the first official confirmation that BlackBerry Tour is bound for Verizon's network, given what we've seen and heard so far, but that's exactly what we've got. Will HRD Save the HD?
There are no more doubts new that it is only a matter of time before all HDs get replaced by SSD. Current HD are limited by the mechanical factor, and not by its magnetic system that has proven to be reliable and efficient to offer large storage capacity units. In other words, the heads and discs of HDs are the limiting factors, for both transfer speed performance and access time. A new technology, known as Hard Rectangular Drive (HRD) and developed by DataSlide, might give HDs the way to compete with SSD on the long term.

Toshiba: One Step Further Towards CPU 16nm-engraving
Currently, most CPU are engraved at 45 nm. In a couple of months, the transition to 32-nm technology should start. Then, in the following 2 years, engineers should work out specification for producing 22-nm engraved CPU. Beyond this limit, it seems that there are more physoical and technology problems than solutions.Toshiba announced a major breakthrough for manufacturing transistor engraved at 16 nm. They obtained such result by using Germanium instead of Silicon. This is an example of the numerous development issues that companies in the field will have to overcome in order to deliver 16, 32 or 64 cores-based CPUs, especially if they want to keep Moore's law effective.

New MacBook Pro Limited 1.5 Gbits/s SATA Bus: Follow-up
We just received a MacBook Pro 15" 3.06 GHz, and we performed some experiments to further investigate the issue associated to the limited 1.5 Gbits/s SATA II port:
WE have removed the SuperDrive and installed two SSDs. Despite that both SSDs are in SATA II format, there are limited to 1.5 Gbits/s as highlighted. We have carried out some performance tests with the Falcon SSD: 130 MB/s reading and 110 MB/s writing. This is in average 100 MB/s less that what we recorded when performing the same experiment with the previous MacBook Pro Unibody Rev 1 (MBPUR1).
In order to eliminate a potential link to a Mac OS X version, we cloned the special build (9J3050) shipped with the new MBP 15" 3.06 GHz, and installed it on the MBP Unibody Rev1: SATA port was then identified as 3 Gbits/s.
So, in summary, it seems that it is a hardware issue/choice, a

AT&T to maintain data plan pricing for iPhone 3G S
AT&T does not appear to be planning any major changes to its data plan prices for the iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G, says the Wall Street Journal. With nary another word in terms of specs or details, one lucky forum goer at NotebookReview has posted what looks to be pics of a new, as of yet unannounced Dell Latitude Z Series laptop. FCC says DTV transition going smoothly, few TVs shot up

Gute News für iPhone-Hacker: Unlock & Jailbreak für 3.0
Die letzten Twitter-Nachrichten des Dev-Team Mitglieds musclenerd dürften den Jailbreak-Nutzern unter euch gefallen und lassen sich wie folgt zusammen fassen.
Es wird sowohl einen Jailbreak (den Zugriff auf das iPhone-Dateisystem) als auch einen softwareseitigen SIM-Unlock für die iPhone-Firmware 3.0 geben.
Beide “Hacks” sind kompatibel zu iTunes 8.2.
Die benötigte Software wird kurz nach Veröffentlichung der iPhone-Firmware 3.0 bereitstehen.

FLV support in Quicktime X...iPhone too?
According to a blog called Cateto, Apple's Quicktime X in Snow Leopard will play Flash FLV moviesagain. Quicktime supported FLV movies up until 2007. After that, you needed Perian to play FLVs and SWFs in Quicktime.
No longer.
Some have insinuated that this might lead to flash on iPhone. We'd be hopeful, but that is a big stretch. FLV support only means that Quicktime will play H.264 video in a .FLV wrapper, not that all of the complex Flash interactivity will be

iPhone game developer ngmoco has appointed former SEGA president and COO Simon Jeffery to serve as the chief publishing officer of the Plus+ Publishing group. The gaming industry veteran also brings experience from LucasArts, Virgin Interactive and Electronic Arts. Apple releases Java update addressing critical vulnerability
Apple has released an update for Java which addresses the recently announced vulnerability that has apparently been a long-standing bug in Java for OS X. The bug allowed for code and applications to be run as the current user, which could be dangerous if you were logged in as an adminstrator.

AT&T throws GoPhone iPhone customers a curveball
Go-iPhone users: Unless you are an "original iPhone with a Pick Your Plan" Customer with the required unlimited Data Plan for iPhone, you might want to give AT&T a call. Otherwise, expect to see a service interruption. Erica Sadun found out the hard way (via SMS of course) that her Go-iPhone is no longer approved to run on AT&T's network. What?! You wanted more than 4 days notice? Welcome to the new AT&T.
