Font Bureau takes credit for Palm's custom 'Prelude' fonts; our hearts melt
Normally we're just happy to be able to read a bit of legible text on a mobile device -- maybe with a bit of anti-aliasing tossed in -- but we really have to hand it to Palm for the truly stunning and readable set of fonts in webOS. Apparently we have Boston-based Font Bureau to thank, who developed the all-new "Prelude" sans serif font family for the device, along with a related "Apres" set for print and marketing. SDXC set to blow your mind next year, with 64GB capacity out of the gate
Kevin Schader, director of communications for the SD Association and all-around great guy, just stated that SDXC cards should be hitting us as early as next year, with a 64GB capacity to begin with. The spec was released to member companies in April, and though Pretec has been parading around a 32GB card, we haven't had a release window of any sort before now. Naturally, it's going to be a slow build up to the theoretical limits of SDXC, with 52MB per second speeds and 64GB cards, instead of the 300MB per second, 2TB cards of our dreams, but we promise not to complain too much along the way.Filed under:

ScriptMaster 3 adds new interface, modules
360Works has released ScriptMaster 3, an update to its FileMaker plug-in that handles file manipulation, web services and shell scripting. The latest version contains a redesigned user interface, and new modules such as Crop Image, QuickTime frame capture and URLDecode. New functions let users retrieve size information, create a ZIP archive or run syntax checks on XML tests.

MMS and tethering functional on some AT&T iPhone 3Gs running 3.0?
AT&T's been feeding us a story that it'll offer MMS on the iPhone only "once [it completes] some system upgrades that will ensure our customers have the best experience," but here's the thing: it seems that it works right now -- if you've got a build of OS 3.0 that'll let it. None of us have been able to get it going ourselves, but we've been sent screenshots from a tipster that seem to indicate that both MMS and tethering are in full effect on the network, so there doesn't seem to be a network restriction involved (we can't verify whether the build we see here was tweaked, so we're thinking there might be some hackery in play). Analyst: Wall St. unwisely ignoring MacBook cuts
Wall Street firms may be missing out on the true significance of Apple's MacBook price cuts, claims Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Prices have fallen several hundred dollars in some cases, which Munster argues should mitigate some of the predicted sales decline for the June quarter. Amazon sells out of Kindle DX after two days
Just days after shipping on Wednesday, the Kindle DX e-book reader is already sold out at Amazon, with another shipment expected by June 17th. The $489 device, sold exclusively through Amazon, apparently sold out on the first day, also thanks to pre-orders.

EVGA GeForce GTX 285 comes to the Apple Store
The Apple Store, this week, updated its high end video card selection to include the EVGA GeForce GTX 285. IT comes with a GB of DDR3 Memory and wouldb be the fastest video card Apple would sell for its systems. IRS mulling taxing employee cellphone usage
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced this week it has proposed a rule that would deem 25 percent of an employee's annual company-issued cell phone expenses a taxable benefit, according to a Friday WSJ report. Nintendo Wii sets record as fastest-selling console in the US
The Wii has already set more than its share of sales records, but it looks like Nintendo has now claimed another big one, with the latest NPD figures indicating that the Wii has become the fastest-selling console ever in the United States. Slow USB thumb drives after formatting on a PC.
Thumb drives are usually relatively fast when connected to a your Mac, and will mount in a few seconds and be accessible from the Desktop or Finder side-bar. This should happen regardless of the format as long as the format is one that's supported by OS X; however, sometimes after formatting a drive using Windows or another OS, they can start running slowly.

Windows 7 upgrade coupon plan gets detailed, said to be starting soon
We've already gotten word of a few Windows 7 upgrade plans, but it looks like things are now really starting to get fleshed out, even if nothing's quite official just yet. According to PC World, at least some PC vendors will be kicking off a coupon program on June 26th, which will let folks that buy premium versions of Windows Vista upgrade to Windows 7 when it rolls out this fall. Preparing for 10.6 Snow Leopard: Graphics and processor requirements.
The upcoming version of OS X promises to be a streamlined and refined system that will cut out much of the bloated and old code that has been kept in the OS at least since the initial 10.0 public beta version which was released in the summer of 2000.
Along with stripping out all of this legacy code, Apple has incorporated a variety of new technologies in Snow Leopard that will make the most out of modern computing hardware, and has dubbed these technologies "OpenCL" and"Grand Central Station". In addition, they've made the switch to fully supporting 64-bit computing in the new OS, but while Snow Leopard will install on all intel-based Macs, not all Macs have the hardware requirements to support these key enhancements.

NEC builds WiMAX router for sharing sweet broadband goodies with your friends over WiFi
We're big into 3G routers, don't get us wrong, but with a bit of WiMAX on tap, the concept becomes all the more succulent. NEC is showing off a vaguely defined Mobile WiMAX Router at Interop Tokyo 2009, which can run on battery and shares its connection over WiFi. The face of Apple Stores to come
Apple's new Scottsdale Arizona Store is a sign of things to come according to CNET. The new store has a much bigger Genius Bar than most its size. It also has some new design elements:
When looking through the wall of windows on one side, you can see straight through to the other side of the store and out another wall of windows. If that wasn't enough to give you a feeling of space, the Scottsdale store also has a 75-foot long skylight.
Apple plans to open or update more than 100 stores this year incorporating some of this new thinking.

Kindle DX sold out, but not for long
Well, it didn't happen quite as fast as the original Kindle, but it looks like the Kindle DX has now officially sold out, a full two days after it first became available. Palm may have doubled Pre shipments
Estimates by JPMorgan analyst Paul Coster published on Friday suggest that Palm may have already doubled its shipments of the Pre. iPhone (3GS): Doppelt so schnell?! Was heißt das genau? T-Mobile verrät es!
Apple hat zum iPhone und des tatsächlich im Gerät verbauten Prozessor ein kleines Staatsgeheimnis gemacht.
Die einzige Aussage: Doppelt so schnell…
T-Mobile (Niederlande) hat nun die Merkmale des Gerätes veröffentlich.
Im 3GS 32GB sind demnach ein 600 MHz-Prozessor sowie 256MB RAM verbaut, im Vergleich zum “älteren” 3G-Modell ergibt dies, was den RAM angeht eine Verdopplung von 128MB auf 256MB sowie eine beachtliche Steigerung der Taktrate von 412MHz auf 600MHz.

Scottsdale Apple Store uses new architecture
Apple's new Scottsdale Quarter retail store uses a radically different design in some respects, observers note. Ceilings in the building are approximately 20 feet high, and lined with a 75-foot long skylight, reducing dependence on artificial lighting. Blu-ray standard to gain legal copying in 2010
An updated version of the Blu-ray standard will allow for limited copying, the head of the group behind the format's copy protection has acknowledged. Nikon D300S screen leaks out
It's been removed now, but Nikon Rumors says this screenshot from a supposed Nikon D300S was briefly posted on Nikon USA's site earlier today. Conflicting Information about WebObjects
If one looks into information provided by Apple reading and related to MacOS X 10.6 Server, on can read the following statement:
Support for WebObjects is removed with MacOS 10.6,
However, according to our sources, WebObjects, a technology inherited from NeXT, is far from being EOL, and it might be even the opposite! for sure this statement might appear weird and puzzling, but it does not imply that apple is not committed to support WebOjects anymore. Several websites of large companies such as Disney, Apple, Dell, etc. are still relying on WebObjects. In fact WebObjects version 5.5 will soon be available, and development of version 5.6 is well advanced.

Dell and Samsung placing orders for 11.6-inch netbook screens?
We've known for a while that Dell's planning to follow the Mini 10 and Mini 12 with a Mini 11 at some point, and it sounds like that day isn't far off -- word out of the always-poppin' Display Taiwan 2009 tradeshow is that the company's placed a large order for 11.6-inch displays from noted party supplier Chunghwa Picture Tubes. BKA-Chef: "Deutschland ist Testfeld für Phishing"
Der Präsident des Bundeskriminalamtes (BKA), Jörg Ziercke, hat vor Sicherheitslücken beim Online-Banking gewarnt. Trotz des vermeintlich sicheren i-TAN-Verfahrens habe es vergangenes Jahr 1800 Fälle von manipulierten Überweisungen gegeben. "Derzeit existieren drei Trojanerfamilien, die das deutsche i-TAN-Verfahren erfolgreich angreifen können", sagte Ziercke dem "Handelsblatt". Zwar gebe es große Fortschritte bei der Sicherheit, jedoch sei "Deutschland beim Phishing zum Testfeld geworden. Bundesrat mit Freigabe der Digitalen Dividende einverstanden
Der Bundesrat hat der vom Kabinett im März 2009 beschlossenen Änderung der Frequenzbereichszuweisungsplanverordnung (PDF) zugestimmt, die vorsieht, die sogenannte Digitalen Dividende für Telekommunikationsdienste freizugeben. Nach der Digitalisierung des terrestrischen Rundfunks wird für die Fernsehübertragung nur noch ein kleiner Teil der bisherigen Frequenzen benötigt. Die frei werdenden Frequenzen nennt man Digitale Dividende.

Google updates iGoogle beta for iPhone, Android
Google has produced an updated version of its iGoogle web application for iPhones, and devices based on Google's Android platform, like the T-Mobile G1. The new version is said to be faster and easier to use, as well as upgraded to use tabs. New Macbook Pro 15" and 13": Amazing Battery Life and Performance!?
Gizmodo published a test of the new MacBook Pro 13" and 15". They first looked at the battery life time reported by Apple to have been improved, and indeed it is.
When running a video H.264 playback test, the new models had more than 1 hour additional up time when compared to the previous Unibody models! As we would have expected too, those models offer also higher performance level thanks to faster CPU. Last but not least, Apple also improved the quality of the LCD LED displays on the new model.

Kopin crafts world's smallest VGA microdisplay, 2k x 2k postage stamps up next
Think your cellphone display packs a lot of pixels into a small space? Pssh. Kopin Corporation has just announced the smallest VGA color-filter liquid crystal display, checking in with a 600 x 480 resolution and a 0.27-inch (diagonal) size. The feat was accomplished by shrinking the color dots to 2.9 x 8.7 µm from 3.75 x 11.25 µm, and according to the company, it's a huge step in reaching its goal of creating a "2,048 x 2,048-resolution display in a size smaller than a typical postage stamp." 11 million Safari 4 downloads, more than half are Windows users
Apple announced today that in the three days since its launch, Safari 4 Final has been downloaded 11 million times. Interestingly, 6 million of those downloads were on the Windows platform. Windows iTunes owners do get a reminder that there is a new Safari browser is available, but it is still interesting to see that the browser is more popular on the Windows platform than on Mac. Obviously, with around 10 times the user base, there are many more seats out there from which to choose.

Wie birewei.ch meldet, sind erste Gerätepreise für das iPhone 3G S bei Swisscom durchgesickert. Beim Abschluss eines Swisscom-Abos mit 24 Monaten Laufzeit kostet das iPhone 3G S mit 32 Gigabyte Speicher demnach 349.- Franken (liberty piccolo), 299.- Franken (liberty mezzo) oder 199.- Franken (liberty grande). Das iPhone 3G S mit 16 Gigabyte Speicher kostet jeweils 100 Franken weniger. Das iPhone 3G kostet mit 24-Monate-Abo lediglich einen Franken. You see, there's not much wiggle room when it comes to netbook pricing. Betrug im iTunes Store: DJs klauen eigene Songs
Eine Gruppe von neun DJs ist in Großbritannien verhaftet worden, weil sie über iTunes und Amazon Tantiemen in Höhe von 185.000 britischen Pfund erschlichen haben. Sie hatten im vergangenen Jahr 19 Titel auf den Plattformen angeboten un diese dann selbst gekauft. Dazu verwendeten sie 1.500 gestohlene oder gefälschte Kreditkarten. Intel's Braidwood looks to take another stab at Turbo Memory
Intel's jumped into familiar waters this month at Computex when it showed off Braidwood, a flash memory-based accelerator that works by caching I/O from the processor, reportedly enabling applications to launch much faster. Though not directly stated, for all intents and purposes it looks like this is a spiritual successor to Intel's Robson / Turbo Memory, a similar initiative from the company's past that didn't quite meet the commercial or critical success it had hoped. Französisches Verfassungsgericht kippt Gesetz gegen Filesharer
Das Conseil Constitutionnel, das französische Verfassungsgericht, hat die vom Parlament im Mai verabschiedeten Zwangsmaßnahmen gegen illegale Filesharer im Wesentlichen abgelehnt. 24" LED display by LG: Best Friends of MacBook Owners?
When releasing its Apple Cinema Display LED 24" 8 month agao, Apple was among the first to adopt such ecological back lighting technology in its display offer. Today, several models are available, and while the premium price asked by Apple could be justified at that time, it is not anymore today.

Seagate 2 TB HD Finally Hit Shelves
It would have taken one month and a half to Seagate to transform its press release into reality and get its 2 TB HD model on the market.
Well, not everywhere of course, and primarily in Japan, priced around 200 Euro. As a reminder, this HD is based on 4 discs of 500 GB each spinning at 5900 rpm, making it a bit faster than its competitor, the Western digital unit spinning at 5400 rpm. With the availability of this model, price should then finally drop, making it even more interesting to purchase an entry level Time Capsule and then upgrade it to 1 or 2 TB.

Safari 4 not working on some Web pages? Try changing the user agent.
When a new Web browser version comes out, many times online services and applications will not work with that specific version, even though not much in the underlying code in the browser has changed. This could be from just minor bugs with how JavaScript or other Web technologies are handled; or more commonly it can be from the server not being updated to properly recognize the new browser.

Windows 7 E coming to Europe without Internet Explorer
Likely being mindful of the ever-watchful eye of the European Union, Microsoft's announced its Euro version of Windows 7, affectionately and officially dubbed Windows 7 E, will not come packaged with Internet Explorer, or any other browser for that matter. Of course that's not the whole story, as OEMs will be provided free copies of IE8 to bundle themselves, and consumers can pick up their own copies via CD, FTP, or retail channels. 13-inch MacBook (Pro) sees biggest update at WWDC
Of all the price drops/feature updates announced at the WWDC keynote, the 13-inch laptop is seeing the biggest changes. Many will say that this is the MacBook that should have been released last year.

Some iPhone 3G S specs revealed
TMobile's Dutch site has revealed some iPhone processor specs, below:
This is the first revelation that the iPhone now has 256MB of RAM. Also, the 600MHz chip is likely the Samsung S5PC100 ARM Cortex A8 (link to our past evaluations of this processor). If the speed was simply megahertz, the new iPhone would only be 1.5 times as fast (400MHZ to 600MHz). This is a new class of processor which we've been talking about over the past few months.

iFixit strips new 13-inch MacBook Pro apart
Those slackers at iFixit really know how get into a MacBook quick. Here's their takeapart of the new 13-inch MacBook Pro. Note that it is fairly simple to replace the hard drive and RAM. Unscrew the bottom lid and you are presented with all of the good stuff right away. The RAM slides out, while the hard drive is four more screws away.

Boot your new MacBook from an SD card? Back up to it too?
It probably isn't a big surprise to many, but you can officially boot the new MacBook Pros from an SD card according to this KnowledgeBase Article (via Ars). A. The iPhone 3 OS GM activates on any iPhone as long as it is a legit iPhone. (Not SIM unlocked and working on Tmobile in the US or Vodafone in the UK for example). If you are using your iPhone on AT&T in the US, it unlocks without issue. When you go to iPhone 3 you lose your abiity to Jailbreak (for the moment). More information on this here.

AIM Beta Push notifications for iPhone working extremely well
Our Beta tester had the opportunity to try out the new AIM Push Notifications App that was made available this evening on the developers App Store. According to our source, the app is working exactly as it should. We are really looking forward to apps like Fring and Skype getting this functionality. Any other developers out there trying this out?
Oh, and here's another little bonus (and another FU to AT&T?). You can now send SMSes to your contacts with this application just like you can in iChat. In fact, your numbers come over when you sign into your AIM/.Me account.

Just as soon as we finally get our hands on a new unit to test out, the boys over at Rapir Repair are racing to rip one apart. And that's just what they've done here with the Amazon Kindle DX. Image leak shows Samsung Bigfoot set for T-Mobile

iPhone 3GS: A Rough Touch Enclosure Was Designed Originally
Last february, Macrumors published the back side of what was reported as the enclosure of the future iPhone 3GS.
With the recently unveiled model, we now know that it was not a fake:
If one look close enough, you will see that the FCC information and numbers fit. So, the photo published by Macrumors was most likely a prototype that did not make it. But having the FCC information already engraved on the enclosure indicates that this rough black design was dropped late in the development roadmap.
