Nintendo brings DS wireless service to Japanese McDonald's
Filed under: Gaming
Stateside DS gamers can already get online using free WiFi at McDonald's, but now Nintendo's bringing a slightly different version of the service to Japanese McD's: customers can log in to get menu information and download free game demos. The service is being rolled out at 21 Toyko-area restaurants with an assist from NTT, which also provides DS wireless service at Japanese train stations, so things should get lit up fairly smoothly. You'd better hurry if you want to join in on the fun, though: the test program ends on December 28th.

Haptic Creature aims to help humans interact with robots

There's certainly no shortage of efforts out there aimed at improving our interaction with robots, but this latest project from the University of British Columbia is a bit different than most, with it focusing exclusively on haptics as a means of making our relationships with robots more "emotionally rewarding." To that end, UBC's Steve Yohanan created what he calls a "Haptic Creature," a robot rabbit that is designed to mimic the interactions a person has with their pet -- namely, by responding when it's touched or st

RIM changes course, promises to keep Indian Blackberry network secure
Filed under: CellphonesAlthough several Indian news outlets reported last week that RIM was preparing to let the Indian government monitor the domestic Blackberry network, it appears that the outcry has prompted the company to change course and announce that it's committed to "serving security-conscious businesses in the Indian market." That's a big reversal from the rumored plan, which would have allowed Indian security agencies access to the network in exchange for taking the blame for any leak of user data. Of course, not everything's quite settled yet: the Indian government is still demanding that

Atari founder cries wolf about piracy-ending chip

The magic chip he's referring to that "will, in fact, absolutely stop piracy of gameplay"? The TPM chip -- what's been on motherboards for years, that apparently Bushnell just found out about. Physicists develop plastic semiconductors for laser diode use
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
Not to get all scientific on you or anything, but a team of Imperial physicists have just figured out a way to use plastics in laser diodes. For the uninitiated, scientists have been unable to make plastic semiconductor laser diodes because they had not yet found / developed "any plastics that could sustain a large enough current whilst also supporting the efficient light emission needed to produce a laser beam." Now, however, that obstacle has reportedly been overcome by making minor tweaks to a given plastic's chemical structure, and the resulting material will transport charges some 200 times better than before without

Das externe Gerät zur Aufwertung der Notebook-Grafik basiert augenscheinlich nur auf einer GeForce 8600 GT, die einen Marktwert von etwa 50 Euro besitzt. Doch es steckt noch mehr in dem Gerät.

External video cards for laptops.
Source : http://www.tomshardware.com/fr/Generally, the video cards of laptops are not very powerful, thus increasing battery life of the machine. In exchange, they represent in certain cases, as on MacBook, a bottle neck if one wishes to do 3D graphics or simply to play games.
AMD, almost evicted from this market by Intel and its Core processors will propose a new platform which will be innovative in term of power, will make it possible to connect an external video card to a laptop. It will connect via a PCI Express port 2.0 8x and will take over integrated video card of the machine.
It will be thus possible to use power demanding 3D software when the machine is connected to the external power source without increasing the heat load since the video card is outside the laptop.
Of course, it will be necessary to see what this solution gives us in real use, but it could find a public following.

The player features a 4.3-inch display, 10-millimeter thick enclosure, built-in FM radio tuner and the potential to play nice with a not-yet-developed dock that would enable video output. Beyond that, details are freakishly scarce, so it looks like you'll have to put away your excitement for the time being.

Supporting SVM against the Hadopi law
We've always said that HardMac does not want to get involved in politics. Even though that principle, we have reported about some laws that we think are injustice. This is the case with the Hadopi law, which is going to ban people in France from the internet.
Here's the point: if someone gets caught downloading illegal material, he'll get a warning. If he gets caught a second time, this law will suspend his internet connection.
SVM has launched apetition against this law, and we ask you to sign it too - and here's why:
Once voted, you'll be responsable for your internet connection forever. If, for example, you have an open WiFi network, and someone downloads illegal material over your network, the authorities will not pursue this person, but instead prosecute you for downloading that illegal material.
Those who proposed this law, argument that once you get a first warning, you can still secure your net

Apple Thinks of Adding Solar Power to its Mobile Devices
According to http://www.macworld.com/, Apple filed a patent describing the use of solar cells underneath the layers of a touch-sensitive display in its mobile devices. This project could help to increase the battery lifetime, more than immediately provide a way to refill it only from solar power.
The iPhone and the iPod Touch should be the perfect device for such system. Even though solar cell technology has been recently offering serious improvement, one will have to find he largest surface possible and one way to achieve it would then be to stack a touch-sensitive layer, a display and solar panel on top of one another.
For sure one will have to leave the iPhone or the iPod Touch on a table properly illuminated, as keeping it in your pocket or in your holder will not really refill the battery.

Sony to Launch the BASE Project Aiming to Promote Blu-ray in Europe
As reported by CDR Info, Sony will launch the BASE project (Blu-ray Authoring and Solution Europe) in order to promote the use of Blu-ray support by European movie studios. After having convinced Hollywood's majors to adopt the new format, Sony is pushing to get the entire movie industry on-board, despite the fact that some analysts currently think that the current DVD might be replaced by the non-physical offer provided by online video store, and not by the BD media.
One will easily agree that to promote the Blu-ray, Sony should massively decrease the price of standalone BD players to increase the pool of owners while decreasing the price of royalties asked to Studios to get their movie in BD format. Indeed, the war against HD-DVD being over, Sony does not have to pay Movie studios to adopt BD as the exclusive format for their film catalog, and is probably rather trying to find a way to get cash back following years of spending for R&D and marke

Rock Band Stage Kit smoke machine and strobe light in pictures
Filed under: GamingGameStop leaked the existence of the $100 Rock Band Stage Kit back in January, and it's updated the listing with the first pictures we've seen of the included smoke machine and strobe light. Review: iFrogz Treadz for 3rd Gen Nano
Finally, I got a silver iPod nano. This lightweight and cute music player definitely needs protection from my world, although that wonít help me misplacing this tiny little block; its needs a beeper attachment for that! After I loaded it with a library of AAC and MP3 encoded music, I set out to identify the best protection for it. My initial pick i
