Telnet "hack" allows for network remote control of TiVo
Filed under: Home Entertainment
It may not be very practical just yet but, as Zatz Not Funny's Dave Zatz points out, this recently discovered telnet "hack" for network remote control of a TiVo certainly offers no shortage of potential. Apparently, this one arose out of TiVo's deal with Creston to allow for integration with their home automation framework which, fortunately for those that like to dabble in such things, simply involved having TiVo HD and Series3 units listen to port 31339 for connections from a Crestron device. As Zatz notes, however, there's nothing to stop any device from telnetting to the TiVo's easily-findable IP address using the aforementioned port and in

First Look: 1Password, password manager
Everyone knows the importance of passwords. The problem is that the more websites you use, the more separate passwords you may need for each site, such as one for your Amazon.com account, and another for your Yahoo e-mail. Remembering a single password is easy, but the more you need to remember, the harder it becomes. What most people do is choose

ACARD's dual 2.5-inch RAID enclosure is slim, hungry for power
Filed under: Storage
If you're looking for an odd, yet usable storage solution, perhaps ACARD's Mirror Smart Mini is the thing for you. The device uses two 2.5-inch SATA drives side by side in a small enclosure; the drives can be mapped as a hardware-based RAID 1 array, or can be used as separate devices. The aluminum casing plugs into your system using USB 2.0, but unfortunately requires an AC adapter for power, thus making it slightly less awesome than we want it to be. Regardless, if you're moving around a lot and need a backup option, you might have found your $69 answer.[Via

SUNRGI, University of Tel Aviv boast of solar power advances
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
It looks like we've got a bit of intercontinental solar power action today, with Silicon Valley start-up SUNRGI and the University of Tel Aviv both recently boasting of some advances in the field, which they each unsurprisingly say could change things in a big way. For its part, SUNRGI claims that its "concentrated photovoltaic" system (pictured above) can produce as much electricity as much larger solar panels thanks to its use of lenses that magnify sunlight 2,000 times. That, they say, could allow the system to produce electricity for as little as 7 cents per kilowatt hour, or roughly t

In black and white, the note (on page 26 of the report) reads: “The increases in Mac net sales and unit sales were driven primarily by sales of the new MacBook Air, introduced in January 2008, and higher sales of the iMac and other Mac portable systems.”
The report notes Mac unit growth of 51 per cent and 48 per cent in the second quarter of Q2 and first six months of 2008 respectively, observing the rate of growth strongly exceeds the industry average.

The previously outed system is quite serious, utilizing NVIDIA's nForce 790i Ultra SLI chipset, a wide variety of Intel CPUs (ranging from the Core 2 Duo up to the Core 2 Duo Extreme), support for ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 (CrossFireX) or NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT (SLI) graphics chipsets, up to 8GB of RAM, and the ability to install up to four hard drives in various configurations. Aussies get 3G iPhone choice
Cnet 'stralia gets the inside information. Optus is getting the 3G iPhone. But we know Telstra is getting it too. Everybody is getting it it seems - maybe even 3 and Virgin.
Perhaps that story a month ago about all of Australia's resellers getting the iPhone was true as well. Timetable: wait for it..Late June, just like everyone else.
Also, AustraliaSorry for the picture, we know how much Paul Hogan is revered as a representative of your proud nation

Gigabyte's GSmart Smart Touch UI shown on video
Filed under: Cellphones
Check it -- Gigabyte has just revealed details about a swank new user interface for its GSmart mobiles, and it has been coined Smart Touch. Sadly, multi-touch gestures aren't supported, but it does handle dragging / dropping and gives users oodles of customization options. Comically enough, the note on the new UI actually admits that it "works like [the interface on the] iPhone," but it claims to be superior due to its tight-knit integration and more "useful and interesting features." Sure, alrighty. We'll let you be the judge on this one -- jump on past the break for an excruciatingly long demonstration vid.[Via

Demand for Intel's Atom already outstripping supply?
There's a ton of upcoming laptops and devices based around Intel's Atom processor, and it looks like all the early interest is causing that best of all possible problems for the chipmaker: it's gotten too many orders. Intel told the WSJ that it's planning on producing "millions" of Atom chips this year, but that it's "seeing better-than-expected demand" as production begins and that it's "we are working quickly to address it." Still, it looks like manufacturers are expecting a shortage to last for a while -- ASUS predicted that supply would be

The phone sports a Pearl-esque keyboard, typical trackball navigation, and apparently utilizes both an internal and external LCD screen. No word on specs, carriers, or a release date, but BGR is saying this puppy is due before the end of the year. You'll know more when we know more!

MacBook Air users still faced with overheating problems?
We're still hearing reports of MacBook Air overheating woe, well after an EFI update in April that was meant to address some of those problems. While hot computers are nothing new, the MacBook Air starts shutting down cores and offloading processes when things get bad, which means users are faced with aggravating stop-start freezing until they can manage to cool the computer off -- or just put it to sleep and let it "rest." Apparently some people have traced this back to the age-old misapplied thermal grease problem, but that's hardly a solace for the

Western Digital's VelociRaptor drive gets reviewed

We already had some early benchmarks of Western Digital's speedy new VelociRaptor hard drive the day it was announced, but the folks at Extreme Tech have now had a bit more time to spend with the drive, and they've churned out a full review of it for those that still haven't made up their mind. As with others, they found the drive more than lived up to its promise of being the "world's fastest SATA disk," with it even beating out many solid state drives in terms of write performance. The biggest downsides, as you might expect, are its relatively high (but not unr
