After a brief closure, the US Store is open again.
The Airport Express mobile base station has been updated. It now supports the 802.11n.

5.25" Blu-ray Player for less than 150
The french website BHmag has tested the LiteOn-401S. This is a rather unusual device as it can play CD, DVD and BD media, but can NOt burn any of those media. Its main interest is its price, for less than 150 it can allow you to get access to HD movies for less money than purchasing a PS3, if you have a compatible hardware (HDMI + HDCP chips).
Maybe one day Apple might add it to the BTO, even though we will primarily need Cupertino to add support for BD media in DVD player, as well as manage AACS DRM. But it will probably happen when HD video will finally be available on the iTunes Store, and it does not seem to be a priority at 1, Infinite loop

GPU/CPU fusion CPU GPU in 2009 at Intel/AMD
During the purchase of ATI, AMD had a stated goal to work towards a merged CPU and graphics chip. If they plan to offer their first solutions in the second half of 2009, they may face a polite grilling by Intel.
The latter should offer this type of product as of the second quarter 2009, a few months before AMD.
It is not known whether these solutions will actually perform, Intel has not excelled in integrated video chips, but it is a new battleground between the two smelters.
It seems according to initial information gleaned at Intel that this solution will have a tangible benefit. The power consumption of the merged GPU/CPU will be much lower than that of the two separate chips.
Of course, on paper there are other advantages:
-- Bandwidth between the two will be huge since no need to communicate via the central bus.
-- GPU Frequencies will have a significant increase (but it will certainly have fewer transistors that an independent GPU).
-- Economies of integration

Padded lampposts in London not really being tested

Microsoft's iPod, iPhone killer plan delayed to 2009
Microsoft has gone public on plans to compete with Apple's iPod and iPhone - but we'll be waiting until 2009 until the company gets it together.
Microsoft France's Francois Ruault has confirmed the company plan to ship Zune in Europe in 2009. The third generation of the device hasn't yet been announced, but will be the model that ships in Europe, a report claims.
In a familiar note, the company also intends introducing a WiFi music store and (potentially) a Zune-cum-mobile phone iPhone competitor.

Fortune magazine commissioned artist Karen Caldicott to create a Steve Jobs sculpture for the publication.
The creation features Jobs in tell-tale garb, replete with trimmed white beard, glasses, and (naturally) an iPod mini, though Apple's CEO is seen here to be holding an older, second generation iPod nano.
The news first appeared on collaborative illustrators and artists weblog, Drawn!, which offers regular information and links submitted by its creative members.

Die EU will die Lautstärke von MP3-Playern auf 100 Dezibel drosseln. Das dürfte vor allem Klassik- und Jazzfans treffen. Diese beiden Musikgattungen setzen auf kurzfristige Spitzen, die hohen Pegel werden jedoch nur kurzfristig erreicht. Microsoft's iPod, iPhone killer plan delayed to 2009
Microsoft has gone public on plans to compete with Apple's iPod and iPhone - but we'll be waiting until 2009 until the company gets it together.
Microsoft France's Francois Ruault has confirmed the company plan to ship Zune in Europe in 2009. The third generation of the device hasn't yet been announced, but will be the model that ships in Europe, a report claims.
In a familiar note, the company also intends introducing a WiFi music store an (potentially) a Zune-cum-mobile phone iPhone competitor.

Aperture 2 auf jedem Mac installieren
Apple schränkt die Installation von Aperture 2 ein. So lässt sich die Profi-Bildmanipulations- und verwaltungssoftware nicht auf allen Macs installieren. R.E.M. spielen im Apple Store London
Einen Apple Store in der Stadt zu haben lohnt sich nicht nur wegen dem kostenlosen WLAN dort und der meist komplett verfügbaren Apple -Produktpalette. Fast regelmäßig machen auch bekannte Bands Station zwischen iPods und Notebooks. Im Februar haben Linkin Park den Apple Store SoHo gerockt am 26. März stellen nun R.E.M. ihr neues Album im Londoner Apple Store vor. Darpa entwickelt mechanischen Nanocomputer
Die amerikanische Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) baut derzeit einen stromsparenden und hitzeresistenten mechanischen Nanocomputer. Er könnte künftig in einer Vielzahl von Geräten zur Anwendung kommen: Angefangen bei Autos und Spielzeugen bis hin zu Maschinengewehren. Weil sie robuster und bei höheren Temperaturen einsatzfähig sind als konventionelle Silizium-Chips, könnten nanomechanische Chips unter extremen Bedingungen Anwendung finden, so die Forscher.

Nanoswitch soll Rechenkerne eines Chips per Licht verbinden
IBM-Forscher haben einen photonischen Nanoswitch entwickelt. Er soll in künftige Generationen von Computerchips integriert werden, um Informationen zwischen einzelnen Prozessorkernen über Lichtsignale statt Elektronen auszutauschen. Nokia droht weitere Subventionsrückzahlung
Das Bundesforschungsministerium prüft derzeit, ob Nokia die Bedingungen für die Zahlung von Subventionen in Höhe von insgesamt 10 Millionen Euro eingehalten hat. BKA warnt: Online-Betrug greift weiter um sich

Das Quad-Core-MacBook-Pro bald unterwegs?
Wer hätte sich das träumen lassen zu den seligen Zeiten des PowerBook G4, als Apple-Mobilrechner Jahre brauchten, um von 1,33 GHz auf 1,67 GHz zu kommen. Nun wird einem bei dem Fortschritt der Multi-Core-Technologie fast schwindelig. Intel, Apples Haus- und Hof-Lieferant, hat seinem Hauptwettbewerber AMG gegenüber derzeit die Nase sehr weit vorn und damit das auch so bleibt, basteln die Intel-Ingenieure an Mobil-Prozessoren, die mit vier anstelle von zwei Kernen rechnen.

Gecko: Eee PC bekommt noch mehr Konkurrenz
Wie gizmodo.com berichtet, plant der taiwanesische Hersteller Norhtec ein Mini-Notebook im Stil des EeePC von Asus auf den Markt zu bringen. Gecko, so der Name des Gerätes, soll ein 7 Zoll großes Display haben.

US-Investor steigt bei iPhone-Display-Hersteller Balda aus
Ein Jahr lang hielt US-Investor Guy Wyser-Pratte große Anteile des ostwestfälischen Handyzulieferers Balda, der auch als Lieferant für das Display von Apples iPhone gehandelt wird. Nun hat sich der Investor mit großen Verlusten von seinem Aktienpaket getrennt. (iPhone)

Everex's CloudBook arrives in Japan with touchscreen, Bluetooth
The FIC manufactured Everex CloudBook has finally made its way to Japan. What's interesting is not its US-rooted Everex branding but the fact that the ultra-portable picked up a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and 802.11a (to augment the existing b/g WiFi) along the way without any change to the CE1200J model number. All the other specs remain true to the original right on down to the 1.2GHz VIA C7-M proc and 30GB hard disk. We'd chalk this up to a typo(s) if it wasn't for the new, tax-inclusive price of ¥59,800 or about $600 -- a stiff bump from the $399 touchscreen-less, Stateside model. Let's see if the March 22nd release in Japan brings the additional options for North America

Alternative firmware for the iPhone

NVIDIA's GeForce 9800 GX2 tested, still not out
