MacBook Air selling out means...?
One of the big news items today is that the MacBook Air is selling out at Apple Stores, at Best Buys and online. The natural tendancy of the Mac community is to be elated that the devices are selling out and hard to find.
Not to be party poopers, but there are two sides to the supply and demand model here, and no where in any of the reports does anyone do any investigation into parts shortages, logistics issues or other factors that would be holding Apple back from delivering its products to customers that want them. Just a few weeks ago, many were saying that the MacBoo kAir was selling poorly.

Neue iPod-Spiele: Scrabble und Mini Golf
So langsam gewöhnen wir uns daran: auch diese Woche gibt es wieder neue iPod-Spiele im iTunes Store: Electronic Arts bringt das bekannte Wortpuzzle Scrabble sowie das zuvor nur mit iPods der 5. Generation kompatible Mini Golf.
Die beiden neuen Spiele laufen auf iPods der 5. Generation, dem iPod classic sowie dem neuen iPod nano der 3. Generation und kosten wie gewohnt 4.99 Euro. Eine Videovorschau gibts nach dem Klick auf 'weiterlesen'.
Im Moment sind die neuen Spiele nur in den USA gelistet, der deutsche iTunes Store sollte jedoch im Laufe der Nacht nachziehen.

MacBook Air is a speedburner?
Who would've thunk it? Even with the 1.8 inch hard drive and supersmall processor, the MacBook Air swiftly kicked the backsides of the three closest competitors in C|Net's Lenovo ThinkPad X300 review. In the tests, the Lenovo Thinkpad X300 with 1.2 Ghz processor went up against the Apple MacBook Air (1.6GHz), Toshiba Portege R500-S5003(1.2GHz) and the HP Compaq 2710p(1.2GHz).
Lenovo smartly shipped their demo units with Windows XP. One has to wonder how horribly clunky this thing runs with Vista.

A Blu-ray reader almost installed in the MacBook Pro?
According Apple Insider, Apple wanted to propose a MacBook Pro Penryn with a Blu-ray reader. However this was delayed due to quality problems of the device, certainly the BC-5600S, the only device that could fit into these machines.
The other problems are related to the battery life of the computer when reading these disks. In effect, the blue laser consumes more power than the DVD reader and also the decoding of these videos (H.264 for the Blu-ray) uses an enormous amount of processor power.
This last point can be largely overcome due to the latest generation of video cards. Hardware.fr illustrates this problem in an article.

Adobe Flash CS3 Pro unterstützt Adobe AIR
Der Namenszusatz AIR scheint bereits für ein gewisses dünnes Notebook aus Cupertino belegt zu sein. Adobe verbindet damit allerdings etwas anderes. AIR steht dort für eine Laufzeitumgebung, mit der sich HTML-Inhalte, Ajax und die Flash-Technologie verbinden lassen. New Intel CPUs for Ultraportables
Source : DailytechIntel has officially launched its new Silverthorn processors dedicated to ultraportable and mobile devices.
As illustrated by the photo, those CPUs are tiny, but engraved with a 45nm process and packing all technology advances available from Intel. they will include 47 million transistors, and sport several features such as:
- compatible with x86 instructions
- very low power consumption: 0.5W at 500MHz to 2.5W at 1.8GHz.
Intel plans to offer those CPUs at an aggressive price in order to quickly capture a large part of the market share. Such CPUs will find their ways in ultraportable and multimedia mobile devices, and why not in the future iPhone 2?

Microsoft Cuts Prices for Vista
In order to push Vista adoption among PC users, as most of the current Vista sales originate from OEM and news hardware sales, Microsoft decided to cut prices for Vista. Users will save from 30 to 80USD depending on Vista version.
Despite claims from Redmond's giant, sales of the new OS are not rocketing as expected, and many Pc users are still living happily with XP, or even downgraded new Vista-loaded hardware to previous XP for several reasons, among:
- Vista is much more resource consuming than XP.
- Vista requires a rather powerful graphic card to enjoy all 3D effects available from the system.
- Several applications were and are still incompatible with vista.
- Adding or removing a components or a peripheral is truly a pain with Vista (checking serial numbers, etc.)
- The 64-bits version for Vista is expensive and only few drivers and not optimized drivers are available.

Sony Offers BD Players Supporting for BD Profile 2.0
As SONY won the battle for the blue laser-based HD video format, the company is now offering BD player supporting BD Profile 2.0. Such models sport an Ethernet output allowing them to recover add-ons and updates directly from the web. Of course, purchaser of previous BD players will not be able to update their units to BD profile 2.0, despite owners of the PS3. In USA, some consumers are already waving the flag of a potential class-action against SONY.
Previous BD players remain compatible with BD profile 2.0, but will not have the system requirements necessary to get access to new features or inline add-ons.

Apple picks Atom for mobile devices
Apple will introduce mobile Internet devices later this year.
This follows Intel's announcement of its new generation of small processors designed specifically for such devices, the Atom family. This is Intel's new name for its Silverthorne and Diamondville processors. Intel's Menlow ultramobile platform has been renamed the Centrino Atom.
Intel has created the Atom processor family for deployment in low-cost, Internet-ready mobile computing devices. They are also anticipated to appear in new 'thin-client" computers, designed to exploit the growing trend among major developers Adobe and Microsoft to introduce new applications based on software as a service models.
Atom processors are based on an entirely new microarchitecture designed for small. low-powered devices. This processor family also keeps the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set. The low power, 25mm, multi-thread supporting chips are manufactured using 45-nanometer processes and run at up to 1.8GHz.

Warner, iTunes and DRM-free music plan
Warner Music plans to invigorate its deals with European online music stores, extending DRM-free downloads to additional store fronts in an emulation of its existing deal with Amazon in the US.
While the truth's murky, industry sources warn that a "major announcement" involving Warner Music's plans to offer DRM-free downloads in Europe is likely to emerge early this week, perhaps Tuesday.
That the music label seems set to reveal its plans on Apple's traditional Tuesday news refresh date suggests that Warner may introduce DRM-free downloads through the iTunes Plus service.
However, such speculation carries risk: Warner has deliberately only permitted DRM-free downloads through Amazon in the US, reflecting major label attempts to promote online music services alternative to iTunes.
Apple last week revealed iTunes has become the second-largest US music retailer, with analysts expecting the company will overtake current incumbent, Wal-Mart, this year.

Interview: Design-Thinking wird sich einschleichen
Am Anfang seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn hat sich der Informatiker Terry Winograd mit künstlicher Intelligenz beschäftigt. Auf Umwegen kam er zur Mensch-Maschinen-Schnittstelle, einem Gebiet, auf dem er heute weltweit als einer der Spezialisten gilt. Sein bekanntester Student ist der Google-Mitgründer Larry Page. CeBIT: Arcor meldet Umsatzwachstum von 9,5 Prozent
Arcor hat seinen Umsatz in den ersten neun Monaten des Geschäftsjahres 2008 (April bis Dezember 2007) gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 9,5 Prozent auf 1,72 Milliarden Euro gesteigert. Samsung rolls out 12.1-inch P200 business ultraportable for Europe

We don't see much of Samsung's laptops around these parts, and it doesn't look like the P200 is headed Stateside either, but it's certainly a solid entry into the ultraportable market -- which seems to be the new hotness these days. The laptop has been circulating in the UK since February, but is finally "official" here at CeBIT. The P200 runs on "Intel's latest" chips, up to the Core 2 Duo 9500, and integrated graphics come courtesy of ATI's Radeon Xpress 1250, with the laptop wringing 3.1 hours of life out of those chips with a 6-cell battery. Fishlabs verkauft Handyspiele per Internet-Download
Auf den ersten Blick kosten Handyspiele kleines Geld meist um die 5,- Euro. Dazu kommen allerdings noch Gebühren der Mobilfunk-Provider, die für den Datentransport ebenfalls zur Kasse bitten. Das Hamburger Unternehmen Fishlabs - dessen Spiele besonders oft recht groß sind - möchte seinen Kunden dabei helfen, wenigstens diese zusätzlichen Kosten zu sparen. Wer einen Fishlabs-Titel über die firmeneigene Website kauft, kann die Spiele ab sofort auch per PC herunterladen und muss sie dann nur noch per Bluetooth oder USB auf sein Handy übertragen.

This only happens to other people
Even though we often report problems and breakdowns of machines, until now we have been little affected by such problems.
This period of normality ended this weekend. We relate the facts to you and the way in which they appeared with an aim of recalling the origin of this problem in detail - such a procedure leading us almost to a diagnosis.
The initial problem that we had on this machine was an increasingly frequent tendency to refuse to wake up and instead to reboot. We ignored this problem and it was the only one which we had to complain about with this Mac Pro.
However this Saturday, we have decided to start intensive tests with the idea to publish them. During one of these tests, particularly heavy on the RAM, the machine had a Kernel Panic that the logs associated with a memory card.
We then started by installing a clean system, however when the machine completed this some hours later the situation was the same.
Thus we thought that the RAM that we have added created prob

By the way, if Apple releases the MacBook Pros before the event, you'll know they are mostly just a processor/keyboard/trackpad update. If Apple waits until the event, we are likely to see a full overhaul of the design. We hope we have to wait.
But those Penryn chips that are going into the MacBook Pros are also the same class of processors that Apple puts in the iMacs. Could the iMac be the benefactor of new processor (and front side bus) upgrades? We'd say it is pretty likely.

Crazy MacBook/Pro rumor week concludes today
While everyone has been expecting new MacBook Pros since Macworld, yesterday all of the major rumors sites got word from retail shops that new MacBook priced models were coming as well. What does this mean?
If Apple releases MacBooks and not Pro models, it will mean either something is seriously wrong with the upcoming Pro pipeline (they are way overdue) or that Apple is waiting for an event to launch them because of a design overhaul- most likely alongside the iPhone SDK.
Something else to consider perhaps Apple is making an aluminum MacBook and essentially merging the product lines - like when the 12 inch Powerbook existed. Maybe we'll see a cross the board update?

New MacBooks and MacBook Pros
Apple finally updated the MacBook and MacBook Pro line. Although, the upgrades are significant, they didn't include the larger trackpads that many, including us, had expected. The Pro line does have multi-touch now, however - though it lacks the new flat-key keyboard design that the MacBooks and Air employ.
The case designs for both lines are also the same.
The processors, video cards and hard drive specs are the only updates - which were expected. Grab all the details from Apple.

1.1.4 iPhone Firmware out, Jailbreak-able - but wait 2-3 days (Updated)
Apple last night released the 1.1.4 iPhone firmware. Early reports say that it is Jailbreakable via Zibri's method but both Zibri and iJailbreak are telling people to hold off for a few days until they work out any bugs.
Us? Updated to 1.1.4 and trying out the different jailbreaks. Zibri's 2.4 works fine as far as we can tell. We did get a weird error (pictured) but the iPhone works fine, upgrades, Installer.app, phone etc, all workingmore to comeas we play with it. We're looking at the updated files of course.
UPDATE: Zibri 2.5 is out and supports iPhone 1.1.4 officially.

Apple enterprise SDK event scheduled for March 6th
Apple today released information on the SDK event which was originally scheduled for February 26th. As predicted, the event will largely cover enterprise topics like Exchange and Lotus Notes synching.

AnandTech evaluates the MacBook and MacBook Pro updates. Conclusion? Yawn
AnandTech has taken a close look at the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros both inside and outside. Their conclusion? Not much to talk about. The internals are almost exactly the same. Same motherboards, same hardware save for new video chips and trackpad on the MacBook Pros and Penryns and RAM/HD configurations on both.
Alltogether kind of a small update from Apple. In fact, the MacBook Pros haven't been touched much over the past two years. We expect much more from Apple at the WWDC 2008. Perhaps even a *gasp* redesign.

More iPhone countries to be announced at March 6th event?
The timing seems right for more iPhone countries to be announced at the iPhone SDK event next week. Earlier we reported on Italy, Spain and Switzerland getting on board around the time of the SDK launch. Recent rumors have also included Rogers in Canada, O2 in Ireland and Tmobile in Austria and possibly in the Netherlands.

MacBook Air gets discounted at Amazon $1744
Amazon discounted the MacBook Air to $1744 (after $50 rebate) today. The MacBook Air has been in Amazon's Best selling electronics page since its release (it currently is at #17) so the markdown is obviously not because of slow sales. It is the lowest price we could find anywhere.

Changewave report details iPhone challenges in the business market
Changewave's latest report gives some very interesting numbers for the iPhone in the business market:
Apple is the number two manufacturer in the planned purchases category (ahead of Nokia (this must be US-centric), Palm, Samsung and Motorola) and already has 5% of the business market.
Apple leads (59%) the very satisfied category in their survey by double digit numbers and kills Palm and Windows Mobile devices (10-30% very satisfied).
While RIM currently is the market leader by huge numbers, its recent outages and declining satisfaction ratings are leaving a big question mark in the business landscape - one that Apple is hoping to exploit.

Apple beats Dell in US education laptop market
Hidden in among Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook's speech to the Goldman Sachs Technology Investment Symposium was a critical barometer of Apple's success - Apple beat Dell in laptop sales in the US higher education market. While most reports focused on Cook's optimism as regards iPhone sales this year, the executive also told analysts: "We just received word on Monday that Apple surpassed Dell as the number one supplier of portables to US higher education for 2007," Cook claimed.
"The ceiling for the Macs is nowhere in sight. Even if the market itself isn't growing, for us, switching Windows users is an enormous opportunity," Cook also added.
This is a critical metric for Apple, which once dominated computing on college campuses.

MacBook Air selling out left and right?

It's hard to tell whether the MacBook Air is selling way beyond Apple's regular expectations or whether they just didn't make that many units (there's a difference, after all), but as Ars Technica points out, a cursory glance to Apple's MBA stock-checker shows the majority of Apple stores are plum out. Of course, the Cube sold pretty well in the early days too, only time will tell whether the machine actually has staying power. Something tells us Steve will have a thing or two to say about the Air's sales later this week, though.

Time Machine plays nice with USB HDDs on Time Capsule

Well, would you look at that. It seems as if Time Machine is all buddy-buddy with externally connected HDDs on Time Capsule after all. If you'll recall, many Apple users were miffed (to put it gently) by the disappearance of said feature from vanilla AirPort Extreme Base Stations just before Leopard hit the streets, but according to a hands-on report over at Macworld, "you can perform Time Machine backups to drives attached to the Time Capsule via USB." IBM stellt optischen Bus mit 8 TBit/Sekunde vor
IBM hat den Prototypen eines 48-kanaligen optischen Datenbusses vorgestellt, der nur 3 mm Platz auf einer Leiterplatte benötigt, während zuvor vier Mal so viel Platz benötigt wurde. We've gotten a tip that there could be a new iPod nano color on the way -- purple to be exact -- due to a Circuit City circular ad distributed in Minneapolis this weekend.
