Amazon Prime's Netflix rival still without deals
Amazon's inadvertently spoiled Amazon Prime movie service may still have a long way towards its release, tips uncovered today. In spite of code references, it so far has only independent movies and doesn't have any deals with major studios. Executives talking off the record to the LA Times wanted to be sure it could pay as much as Netflix for rights and whether it would cannibalize DVD sales from Amazon's online store.

Why the camera isn't the culprit for the white iPhone 4's delay
Unless you've been away from the Internet over the last few days, you would've no doubt heard about Woz's special appearance at the Engadget Show on Sunday. Unsurprisingly, a few websites ran with some quotes that they pulled from our interview -- specifically, the highlight was Woz "confirming" that the white iPhone 4 was indeed delayed due to camera issues. Firm gives size, weight of purported iPad 2 screen
The firm claiming to have a second-generation iPad screen, iFixyouri, says it has now measured and weighed the new part in detail. The component is noted to be slightly smaller than its predecessor, sized at 8.25x6.4 inches versus 8.25x6.7. Weight has shrunk by a little less than 10 grams, going from 153.2 to 143.9.

Luxury game controller is hand assembled in Paris, overkill everywhere else
Feeling ostentatious, are we? This luxury game controller (yes, you read that right) is hand assembled in a Parisian workshop and features a lacquered oak wood joystick, ostrich leather covering, and electronics courtesy of Sanwa. Rumor: Amazon could launch unlimited movie streaming in Feb, no major studios on board yet
Just a few days after we got an early peek at Amazon's unlimited movie streaming setup, the LA Times reports "people familiar with the matter" say we could see an official launch by the end of this month. Amazon apparently pushed back its original date for technical reasons and while it tries to acquire more content to take on Netflix. Android Market web store hands-on
Google's new Android Market web store is a pretty awesome and simple idea in theory -- browse and buy apps through the web, hit install, and watch them appear on your Android phone or tablet. Of course, there are a lot of things that could go wrong along the way, but that's certainly not what we're finding in our early use. AT&T hotspot plan ready February 13, packs 2GB extra data
AT&T today updated its tethering plan in advance of the new hotspot plan coming first with the HTC Inspire 4G's arrival on February 13. Both the hotspot and tethering will carry an extra 2GB of data on the same day, regardless of how it's used or how many devices are attached. The deal comes without changing the $45 combined price of getting a tethering-ready data plan.

BlackBerry App World 2.1 gets in-app payments, too
Well, isn't that just an adorable quirk of corporate timing? RIM just announced that BlackBerry App World 2.1 is now livewith support for in-app payments using the BlackBerry Payment Service, matching Google's similar Android Market announcement earlier today. Hex intros Sport Watch Band for sixth-gen Nano
Accessory maker Hex has announced the Sport Watch Band, a forthcoming product for the sixth-generation iPod nano. Like similar gear the band allows people to wear a Nano like a wristwatch. The Sport Watch, though, is intended explicitly for exercise, and unusually includes a special port meant for Nike+ gear. The Nano already has Nike+iPod support built in.

AT&T adding an extra 2GB to phone tethering plans, launching Mobile Hotspot app February 13th
What, 2GB of monthly data isn't enough for your laptoppin' needs? Yeah, us either -- fortunately, AT&T's tweaking its phone tethering plan a bit with an extra 2GB that can be shared among all devices for a grand total of 4GB. As before, you'll need to start off with the $25 DataPro plan and tack on an extra $20 for tethering, bringing the total to $45 a month. Verizon Transfer app for contact migration to VZW iPhones already in App Store
In preparation for the upcoming Verizon iPhone launch, you may notice the VZ Transfer app in the App Store. The free app only works on Verizon iPhones, which means it doesn't do anything yet - but that does not seem to be stopping some exceptionally clever people from downloading it, discovering it does nothing on an AT&T phone, and then giving it a one-star review.
VZ Transfer will transfer contacts from legacy phones (via Verizon's Backup Assistant) to the new Verizon iPhone. The transfer service will be verified via an access code sent through text message to your Verizon mobile number.

Today Google announced that Android in-app purchases are coming to the platform and we were able to get a demo by Paul Sebastien of Disney. Ex-Apple, Delicious Library designer founds Push Pop Press
Delicious Library designer Mike Matas -- later hired by Apple -- is this week launching a new company, Push Pop Press. The firm will concentrate on producing e-books, beginning with titles that will appear for the iPad and iPhone later in 2011. These should be apps rather than titles distributed in the iBookstore, as Push Pop says they will have "photos, maps, and interactive graphics, all through a new physics-based multi-touch user interface."

Motorola Xoom first benchmark: 1823 in Quadrant
We're unabashed spec junkies here at Engadget, and can you blame us? There are mountains of new devices every year, and it helps to have bullet points and numerical differentiators to cut through the fluff. That's why we're happy to say we got the chance to run the Quadrant benchmark on Motorola's Tegra 2-powered Xoom, and have a number with which to compare it against the many competitors sure to breech Android's bow soon. 1823 is the magic number -- which doesn't quite compare to the LG Optimus 2X -- but that's with a non-optimized smartphone version of Quadrant running the app on the tablet's sizable 1280 x 800 display, no less. Today, join.me introduced their free iOS viewer, allowing users to participate in online meetings and screen sharing from their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Android Honeycomb / Motorola Xoom hands-ons: widgets, Grocery IQ, and Monster Madness (video)
Fully-functional Xooms with complete (or seemingly complete) builds of Honeycomb are out in force here at Google's event in Mountain View today, and a bunch of partners are hanging out to demonstrate the tablet apps they've been working on. We checked out both Monster Madness -- a game that's been on Xbox 360 and PS3 for some time -- and Grocery IQ, both of which obviously bring very different experiences to the table (unless you consider grocery shopping "a game," which some of us admittedly do).

Best Buy will carry Verizon's iPhone 4 on launch
Best Buy today made public that it would join in on the Verizon iPhone 4 launch. The once-excluded retailer plans to have the phone on February 10, the same day as others. Sales will still be in-store only but should include both regular and Best Buy Mobile shops.

TouchType debuts SwiftKey Tablet app for Android tablets

Warum GTA beinahe gescheitert wäre

Google at its special Android 3.0 event claimed an edge in mobile app stores by launching a full Android Market web store. Mel Martin: The Daily through the eyes of one journalist
I've spent most of my life in the news business, both in reporting and management, so something like The Daily, which premiered today is of high interest to me, both as a new media observer and as a voracious news consumer. From where I sit, The Daily looks pretty good. It's attractive, has some depth and has a varied mix of news. The creators clearly understood that providing news in the digital age isn't just about moving static content to a tablet, but using the features the tablet includes to enable video, audio, animation and graphics in a way simply not possible with something delivered on a piece of paper.

Google's Android Market now has a web client. Finally! And guess what else, it's already live. Hit the source link below to get exploring. It's very simple, really, you can browse the entire Market catalog on your desktop or however else you're accessing the web, you can purchase anything that takes your fancy, and then -- via the magic of over-the-air transfers -- it downloads and installs onto your Android phone. A neat phone management section will let you nickname your registered devices to make them more recognizable.

Steve Sande: A first look at The Daily
I haven't read a newspaper since the Rocky Mountain News went belly-up a few years ago, and I'm not a fan of broadcast or cable news at all. So Rupert Murdoch (at right, during this morning's press conference) and his minions at News Corp have a long way to go to impress someone who pretty much gets all of his news from RSS feeds, occasional peeks at news websites, and Twitter. I downloaded The Daily for free a few minutes ago and will be reading it for the next two weeks courtesy of Verizon, but the big question is whether or not I'll continue to read the iPad-only newspaper after that point.

Two New Jersey Apple Stores to open for non-retail activity on Sundays
Good news for New Jersey residents living in Bergen County. The two local apple stores in Paramus and Woodcliff Lake will soon be open on Sundays, ifoAppleStore reports. Due to blue laws that are still in effect in the county, these Apple stores are the only two Apple retail outlets that are currently closed every Sunday.
Blue laws, implemented decades ago, have remained on the books in some locations across the U.S. They were originally adopted to set aside a day for religious observance; many people enjoy the break from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

If you download The Daily (or any other app) from the App Store today, you'll be prompted to read and accept new terms and conditions. The update addresses subscriptions; something we and publishers have been anticipating and debating for a long time.
According to the new T&C, "Purchases of subscriptions to access the Services available through the Licensed Application are controlled, handled and processed by Apple and all payment and all other matters regarding such purchases (including any information you submit or that may be collected in connection with such purchases) are subject to and governed by the applicable Terms of Service and Privacy Policy of Apple. Murdoch: The Daily will come to "all major tablets" in time
Rupert Murdoch during his introduction event for The Daily promised that the publication wouldn't be exclusive to the iPad in the long run. News Corp was "quite honest with Apple" and stressed that the daily publication would come to "all major tablets" at a certain point. Microsoft today obviated much of Google's attempted stand on web video policy by posting an H.264 extension for Chrome. New Jersey Apple Stores work to circumvent Sunday laws
Two Apple Stores in Bergen County, New Jersey are devising a way of getting around local "blue" laws preventing shops from opening on Sundays, sources say. While the state technically abolished such restrictions in 1959, local jurisdictions were allowed to enforce their own laws favoring religions with Sunday observances. Apple confirms Verizon iPhone pre-order
Coming as no surprise, Apple has issued a press release stating that the Verizon iPhone 4 will be available for pre-order on Thursday, February 3rd via the Apple Store. High demand is expected, and Apple will be issuing the phones on a first come, first served basis. Verizon issued its own confirmation on January 28.
Qualified Verizon Wireless customers will be able to pre-order on the 9th. On the 10th, the Verizon iPhone will be available to all at Apple Stores and participating Verizon Wireless Stores across the U.S.. Happy shopping!

Apple seeds third Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta build to developers
Mac OS X beta build 10J850 has been seeded to developers for testing by Apple. This is the third beta build of 10.6.7 to be released to developers in just under two weeks. The previous beta, build 10J846, was seeded to developers just over a week ago.
As reported by MacRumors, Apple is requesting that developers continue to test AirPort, SMB file sharing, Bonjour, graphics drivers and the Mac App Store application. No known issues are reported with this build.
Build 10J850 weighs in at 1011.8 MB for the combo update and 376.9 MB for the delta update.

LG teaser might be Optimus 3D, only without the 3D (video)
We're not sure what's going on with the new teaser video released by LG. It looks like the handset that Phandroid pegged as the Optimus 3D a few days ago and has since become the poster-boy for the device that will officially include a glasses-free 3D LCD and "dual-lens camera for 3D recording." The game shares some core components of the popular iPhone hit, namely that to play, you pull back on a projectile and fire it at your opponents. T-Mobile this morning provided fuller details of the LG G-Slate and the respective companies' best chance at an alternative to the iPad. June Medford, Biologin der Colorado State University, hat ein Verfahren entwickelt, um Pflanzen zu Bombendetektoren umzufunktionieren. Das klingt nach einer ziemlich verrückten Idee, die aber immerhin die DARPA und das Department for Homeland Security dazu gebracht hat, das Projekt zu unterstützen. Sie hat eine Hortensiensorte so manipuliert, dass ihre Proteine auf Sprengstoffe und andere Schadstoffe reagiert, die in ihrer Nähe vorbeikommen, indem sie die Farbe wechselt. Macworld Expo 2011: CrossOver goes to version 10 with Impersonator
If you want to run Windows apps on your Mac, there are now a few ways to go about it. First there's Boot Camp, the official solution that will let you boot into an installed Windows partition. Then there are virtualization solutions like Parallels or VMWare, which "pretend" to be a separate hard drive with an installed Windows partition. Finally, there's emulation, and that's what CodeWeavers' CrossOver does. Rather than an actual Windows installation, CrossOver pretends to be Windows and allows Windows apps to run on a Mac, even without an actual Windows CD.

Android Market acting weird -- is it a precursor to tomorrow's event?
We've gotten a bunch of tips in the past hour or so that the Android Market is doing weird things, and we can corroborate this on our Nexus S here -- we're just not able to download stuff. Apps look like they're starting to download, then they suddenly vanish into thin air without a trace and without an error message. New York Times previews its social-aware The Daily rival
The New York Times today gave an early look at its rough parallel to News Corp.'s imminent The Daily iPad app. News.me, co-developed by betaworks, would take more of its cues from Flipboard and curate content from Twitter. T-Mobile teases 3D capability (on LG G-Slate, probably) in the vaguest possible way
The rumors about 3D support on LG's G-Slate tablet (both recording and viewing) have reached a dull roar in recent days, and a little teaser just posted on T-Mobile's official Facebook account certainly isn't going to do anything to quell the trend. The simple clipart image of some old-school red / blue anaglyphic glasses pretty much says everything you need to know -- that there's something 3D in store from these guys -- and the Honeycomb-powered G-Slate is the only thing in T-Mobile's immediate future that we know has had 3D rumors attached to it. Any other solid theories out there?

iPad 2 screen surfaces in the West
A screen for the next iPad may have surfaced outside of China for the first time. The 9.7-inch screen, while not turned on, matches analyst descriptions and is at least 1mm lighter and thinner than the panel it would replace. Despite these and a thinner bezel, it would have "definitely higher quality" than the earlier model, 9to5Mac said.

Macworld Expo 2011: Smart Technologies' interactive whiteboards
One of the most interesting booths at last week's Macworld Expo was that of Smart Technologies, who were showing off their interactive touch surface systems. These aren't necessarily Mac-related, unfortunately -- the equipment Smart sells is just an interface, or rather a series of interfaces designed to work with touch-based software. But Smart has supported the Mac platform for over 15 years, we were told, and the demo units on the floor were running OS X.

Apple now faces yet another lawsuit involving the iPhone, as a California-based plaintiff accuses the company of violating privacy and business laws. AT&T highlights simultaneous voice, data in latest ads
Trying to blunt any possible migration of users to Verizon, AT&T has launched a new e-mail campaign to existing customers that reminds them that only on AT&T can the US iPhone handle voice and data simultaneously, TechCrunch reports. Preview of CaseGoods TypeCase for iPad
Sometimes the most important things you see at Macworld Expo are the things that you don't like. For example, there were a lot of iPad case manufacturers who were showing off their take on case + keyboard combos. A lot of these cases use an awkward "chiclet"-type keyboard that in my opinion is worse than no keyboard at all. In an attempt to keep the cases relatively small, most of the manufacturers are using tiny keyboards that are difficult to use.

Flash-friendly Skyfire browser for iPad gets updated
After the initial iPhone, iPad and iPod touch version earned $1 million in its first weekend in the App Store back in November, the third party iPad-specific web browser Skyfire for iPad (US$4.99) has been updated to Version 2.1.1 and is available for downloading now. Dish Network offers $1 billion to buy a bankrupt satellite/antenna company for reasons only it knows
Dish Network has agreed to buy DBSD, a company currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection that's reportedly working on a system to tie together satellite and ground-based antenna communication for wireless phone and internet service, pending approval by the FCC. UK to investigate Apple, Amazon e-book pricing
The UK's Office of Fair Trading said on Tuesday that it would look into possible antitrust violations in the pricing set by e-book retailers and publishers. It said it had received a "significant number of complaints" about the pricing. While no companies were named, the WSJ heard the issue was with the agency business model used by Amazon's Kindle store and Apple's iBookstore in collaboration with at least HarperCollins and Penguin.

Intel recalls Sandy Bridge, may affect future Macs
Intel announced on Monday that it was recalling its Intel 6 series chipset. This chipset is utilized in computers powered by the next generation Core i5 and Core i7 processor. These Sandy Bridge processors are expected to debut in the next refresh of the MacBook Pro and possibly the iMac. The flaw may result in the slow degradation of the SATA port which could potentially degrade the performance of hard drives and DVDs. Intel has issued a silicon fix and is re-manufacturing this chipset. The first batch of improved chipsets will arrive in late February and manufacturing should be in full swing by April.

iOS now responsible for 2 percent of all web traffic
According to a report from NetApplications, Apple's iOS now has a 2 percent share of all web traffic. Combining for a worldwide average of 2.06 percent, the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch OS has passed the 2 percent mark for the first time ever and has even reached a whopping 10 percent market share in Singapore. The study also shows that the Mac OS kept steady at 5 percent while Windows maintained its solid lead at just under 90 percent of worldwide internet traffic.
