Apple verschickt Einladung für iPad-Event am 2. März
Wie erwartet veranstaltet Apple heute in einer Woche einen Presseevent zum iPad. Eine entsprechende Einladung wurde heute an ausgewählte Medienvertreter verschickt. Die Einladung trägt den Schriftzug «Come see what 2011 will be the year of» und deutet in der Aufmachung auch gleich das Thema iPad an. Als Veranstaltungsort dient einmal mehr das Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Aller Wahrscheinlichkeit wird Apple den Event zur Einführung der zweiten iPad-Generation nutzen.

Apple TV / film product placement down, but still ahead of competition
Maybe it's because I am both a fan and a loyal customer, but I do tend to notice how often Apple products pop up everywhere as the de facto computers on TV and on the big screen. According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple doesn't even pay for that product placement, yet 30 percent of the top movies in 2010 prominently featured Apple products.
This figure is down from 46 percent in 2009 and 50 percent in 2008, but that 30 percent is still higher than any other brand -- even with other computer brands trying to mimic Apple's placement strategy. Back in 2006 we discussed an article at The Washington Post about

Briefly: Steve Jobs' birthday, FileMaker August Conference
A group of computing students from Imperial College London have started a website dedicated to the celebration of Steve Jobs' birthday. Through the site, happybirthdaystevejobs.com, anyone can leave their birthday wishes for the Apple co-founder and CEO who will celebrate his 56th birthday on February 24th. Steve Jobs is currently on a medical leave from Apple and is rumoured to be undergoing treatment at the Stanford Cancer Centre in Palo Alto. Apple holds shareholder meeting, Tim Cook presides
Apple held its latest shareholder meeting in Cupertino today, and while Jobs was apparently in attendance (and re-approved as a board member, along with William Campbell, Millard Drexler, Albert Gore, Andrea Jung, Arthur Levinson and Ronald Sugar), Tim Cook was the one overseeing the proceedings. The shareholders also voted to keep Ernst & Young LLC as the accountants of record, and a vote about executive compensation was also approved. One proposal brought up by the shareholders suggested that Apple should publish a detailed succession plan for the CEO position, but that vote didn't pass.

Southwest Airlines starts selling iTunes music, video
Southwest Airlines has launched a new in-flight service selling content from iTunes, according to Variety. Dubbed InAirtainment, the service actually takes the form of a website through which people can browse for music, movies or TV shows hosted on iTunes. Southwest says is it is claiming a small royalty from every download, which may be 5 percent if the airline is enrolled in the normal iTunes Affiliate program.

SlingPlayer for iPad, iPhone gets video-out support
The existing SlingPlayer iPad and iPhone app has now been updated to allow outputting video to an external screen through component cables. The move effectively turns Apple's devices into Slingbox adapters for TVs away from home. Both the SlingPlayer Mobile 2.1 for iPhone (App Store) and SlingPlayer Mobile 1.1 for iPad (App Store) are now available, with either priced at $30.

TUAW TV Live: The Android flu cancels today's show
Well, whatever it was that knocked TUAW Talkcast Host Kelly Guimont for a loop on Sunday night has apparently crawled through the Interwebs and infected me. After a rough night with a fever, I can barely speak, never mind get through a one-hour show without coughing every few seconds. I'm blaming the Android flu for this -- it's your fault, Google!

OmniVision 8MP cam not ready for iPhone 5, Sony jumping in?
OmniVision shares were shaken on Wednesday after unofficial supplier checks by Baird analyst Tristan Gerra suggested it might lose out on supplying cameras for the iPhone 5. An eight-megapixel sensor rumored for Apple's smartphone, most likely the OV8820, "may not be ready" for the mid-summer launch. Sony may have to step in and could have "all" of at least the first wave of orders, Gerra said.

Apple's North Carolina data center to go live this spring
The cloud is the future and the future appears to be arriving this Spring, as Apple's North Carolina data center is finally due to go live, according to reports from today's Apple annual shareholder meeting. The phrase "in the cloud" refers to data hosted at off-site Internet-accessible facilities rather than stored locally at a specific end-user machine, allowing you to do things like access photos, videos, or music directly over the Internet.

New Pros may carry 'FaceTime HD' cameras, FaceTime 1.0
An anticipated MacBook Pro refresh -- which could happen as soon as Thursday -- may bring with it two improvements to FaceTime. The first is the introduction of "FaceTime HD" cameras, referenced in photos of alleged boxes for the updated notebooks. What the name implies is uncertain, but Apple's other uses of "HD" may indicate that Pro webcams will be upgraded to do 720p video.

AT&T may have limited HSUPA 3G only to iPhone 4 users
AT&T's apparent disabling of HSUPA 3G on some of its phones may have been a temporary measure that didn't affect the iPhone 4, insiders suggested on Wednesday. The carrier so far reportedly requires just regular HSDPA, without the faster upload speeds, on its network and thus can't guarantee that the Atrix 4G, Inspire 4G or any other phone would connect properly. The iPhone 4, and most likely 3G modems, were given special exemption to the rule to run at full HSUPA rates, Engadget understood.

Well, it looks like Apple's just put an end to some of the speculation surrounding its massive data center in North Carolina. YouTube says it's in talks to stream NHL, NBA games, NHL says it isn't
Currently, sports is one of the main things that's tough to stay connected to if you choose not to subscribe to traditional linear pay-TV service like cable or satellite, so it's no surprise there was much ado over Gautam Anand, Google Director of Content Partnerships for Asia Pacific, saying the company is negotiating to broadcast NHL and NBA games on YouTube. Apple: NC datacenter for iTunes and MobileMe, due in spring
Apple during a Q&A session at its shareholder meeting confirmed some of the role and timing of its North Carolina datacenter. The facility is targeted at supporting both iTunes and MobileMe, the copmany said, and is due to go live during the spring. Japanese site claims access to detailed iPad 2 mockup
A Japanese site is displaying photos of what it claims is a realistic mockup of the second-generation iPad. Allegedly encountered during a trip to Shenzhen, China -- the home of many technology companies, including Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn -- the mockup is notably thinner than the current iPad, and also uses tapered edges, similar to those on the fourth-generation iPod touch. The back is otherwise completely flat, doing away with a previous bulge centered on the Apple logo.

Dell rolls out Froyo update for AT&T and Rogers Streak 5 users
Dell already pushed out its Froyo update to users of unlocked Streaks way back in November, and it looks like those that bought their Streak 5 from AT&T or Rogers can now finally get in on the action as well. The company just began rolling the update for those users out over-the-air today, and it brings with it all of the features we've already seen on unlocked Streaks, including Flash support, Dell's Stage UI and, of course, support for any apps that require Android 2.0 or later. Leaked photos show 13-inch MacBook Pro, some specs
MacRumors has what appear to be genuine images of the upcoming MacBook Pro refresh. A consensus in the TUAW newsroom says that this appears to be the real deal with the current box matching the previous MacBook Pro release other than the addition of Thunderbolt.

Apple defends in-app subs, claims One Pass is web-only
Apple during its shareholder meeting on Wednesday was put on the defensive and asked to justify its toughened in-app subscription rules. The company insisted it had to maintain the 30 percent cut since the App Store was run at "break even." Google's claimed advantage with One Pass was deceptive as the more favorable 10 percent cut only affected web subscriptions; Android subscriptions and in-app purchases still faced a 30 percent cut, Apple insisted.

Survey finds customers confident in Apple without Steve Jobs
If Steve Jobs were to step down as the CEO of Apple, what effect -- if any -- would it have on the likelihood of buying Apple products in the future?

AT&T's brewing HSUPA-gate: the inside story

Apple shareholders vote down showing CEO succession plan
Apple shareholders during the company's annual shareholder meeting voted down a measure that would have required a public CEO succession plan. The move would let Apple keep Steve Jobs' eventual replacement a secret. Federal Trade Commission is reviewing Apple's in-app purchase system
The FTC is reviewing Apple's in-app purchasing policy after reports of inadvertent purchases by children have continued to surface. FTC Chairperson Jon Leibowitz agreed to look closely at the matter after Representative Ed Markey of Massachusetts brought the matter to his attention.
Leibowitz will most likely focus on Apple's 15-minute window, a single instance sign-in that lets iOS users login once and make additional purchases and downloads for the next 15 minutes. It is during this 15-minute window that children left unattended with a device are able to rack up huge charges.

Developer Quark has formally announced QuarkXPress 9, a long-awaited upgrade of its flagship publishing suite. Zaprudering the Invite: Anything to see?
Whatever you might think of Apple's grammar, there's not much this invitation's artwork is giving away. Of course, we all want to know: is there a camera up there? If so, we're not seeing evidence of it in the top-middle of the graphic. Perhaps there is a left-mounted camera hidden by March 2, or perhaps there is no camera to be seen at all, which will disappoint FaceTime chatters everywhere. Or perhaps Apple is simply being a tease. As usual.

Apple reportedly reduces iPad 2 production volume target
WIth an announcement of a second-generation iPad just around the corner, Digitimes is reporting that Apple's volume targets for the new device have been set lower.
While both Apple and iPad manufacturer Foxconn are mum on the subject, Digitimes stated that the forecasted manufacturing run for the iPad 2 for the period ending March 31 is now set at about 300,000 - 400,000 units compared to earlier estimates that were in the range of 400,000 - 600,000 units.
Some earlier rumors expressed concern over the ability of display suppliers to achieve the yield goals set by Apple, but Digitimes reports that since the company

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone & iPad updated with video-out support
If you have an iPod, iPhone or iPad with the SlingPlayer Mobile app, you now have a Slingbox to go since the app was just updated with support for video out over component cables in high quality mode. Version 2.1 also includes a few unspecified bugfixes, but we're figuring the opportunity to watch TV, on a TV in high bitrate streams is more than enough to get users mashing that update button and digging out their unused connectors.

Barnes & Noble claims 25 percent of US e-books, profits drop
Barnes & Noble in posting results for its most recent quarter late Tuesday claimed to have gained market share for e-books in the US. The company claimed to have moved from its usual fifth of the market to 25 percent. It tied the success to that of the Nook and noted that it was selling twice as many e-books as any paper books online.

It started in 1963 looking like a slightly stretched Beetle -- which it wasn't much bigger than. The Daily already reaching Android in the spring
News Corp's The Daily could have its iPad exclusivity end in a matter of weeks, sources said Wednesday morning. The periodical jointly announced with Apple should now reach at least one Android tablet sometime in the spring, or no more than four months after it reached the iPad. Verizon also forcing 3G activation on Galaxy Tab, helps iPad
Verizon may have inadvertently fed iPad sales with a new policy change on the Galaxy Tab. Previously available off-contract without any commitment, the Samsung tablet was seen at Best Buy with a warning that it now requires at least one month of Verizon 3G service with activation, much as with the Motorola Xoom. The move spotted by Engadget would raise the actual price of ownership from the quoted $500 to $555 after factoring in a minimum $20 plan and the $35 activation fee.

Apple iAd minimum buy halved to $500,000
Apple is reportedly lowering the entrance fee for its iAd platform to US$500,000, a 50% reduction from its launch price of $1 million. This potential reduction would benefit smaller advertisers who can now afford to get their foot in the door of this mobile advertising platform.

iPad folio case roundup: Three great ways to protect your iPad
Some pundits were calling Macworld Expo 2011 the "iPad Case Expo" since there were so many vendors on hand with either "me-too" products or totally unique ideas. While I think that label is somewhat unfair, there were a lot of iPad cases on display at Macworld.
A number of those designs showed up at my office during the show, so I decided to do a quick overview and comparison post of three of the best for TUAW readers. All three of these are what we refer to as folio cases in that they have a front and back cover, much like a book, and they generally provide a way to prop up the iPad in a number of positions. The latter trait of the iPad folio cases makes them the flexible yoga instructors of the iPad case world.

Square mobile payment system gets simpler pricing, keeps angular shape
If you hate doing math and you run a small business then surely you've looked longingly at mobile credit card systems like Square's longingly. No handling of cash certainly would make life easier, but Square's system of fees and surcharges weren't exactly easy to figure out themselves. Now the company has simplified things, dropping the $.15 per-transaction fee for swiped purchases, charging a simple 2.75 percent on each transaction. If, however, that transaction is being made without swiping the actual card the $.15 transaction fee sadly comes back, but the percentage fee has gone down from 4.0 percent to 3.5. S

iPod nano 1.1 update turns sleep/wake into playback control
Apple has quietly put out a firmware update for the sixth-generation iPod nano that gives its sleep/wake button new functionality. Apple seeds sixth Mac OS 10.6.7 build to developers
Apple has seeded the sixth build of Mac OS 10.6.7 to developers for testing. Build 10J860 comes just five days after the release of the previous build, build 10J858.
No known issues are reported with the build, and developers have been asked to continue focusing their attention on AirPort, SMB file sharing, Bonjour, graphics drivers and the Mac App Store application.
Although no one can predict when Apple will release the public version of 10.6.7, MacRumors suggests that because of the increased pace of build turnaround and the increment of just two build numbers from 10J858 to 10J860, the development of 10.6.7 could be very near completion.

'Dramatic and ambitious' new Final Cut Pro to debut this spring
TechCrunch reports that Final Cut Pro, Apple's professional video editing suite, is set for a major update this spring. According to TechCrunch, a small group of prominent video editors were recently invited to Apple's campus to try out the upcoming revamp to Final Cut Pro and give their feedback on it. Apple's Light Peak possibly called Thunderbolt
Apple's possible plans for Light Peak may have been corroborated by a spate of leaks on Wednesday. Box shots for fscklog have shown a technology nicknamed Thunderbolt that would provide "high-speed I/O" and piggyback on the Mini DisplayPort connector. An accompanying photo of a 13-inch MacBook Pro still in its protective wrapper has shown the connector being virtually identical to Mini DisplayPort but with the Thunderbolt logo nearby, although a rumored third USB port was nowhere to be seen.

Intel and Apple to launch Light Peak as Thunderbolt in the MacBook Pro
According to CNet, Intel is holding a press event on Thursday to launch its Light Peak technology. Light Peak is a high-speed connection technology that lets a single interface replace the SCSI, SATA, USB, FireWire, and PCI Express ports on a computer. The technology was introduced in 2009 and, according to an Intel executive, is ready to make its commercial debut. The current iteration of Light Peak is based on copper, not optical technology, and is expected to provide 10 gigabits per second bi-directional data transfer.

Yahoo! sent us word that its new finance app, called MarketDash, is in the store now. While I'm not personally a big stocks guy, I think it looks good, and the iTunes reviews so far agree. The app is designed to tap into Yahoo! Finance, so if you have an account running over there, you can just pull it up in the app and get right to work. The app provides real-time data on whatever stocks you have set up, and you can even control watch lists and check your portfolio options from the iPad (and those will be linked back to your account on the Web).

Next iPad hit by last-minute panel switch, still on track
Apple's future iPad may have seen a drop in early production owing to both problems and a late change from Apple itself. iPad-2-Event am 2. März?
Kara Swisher von AllThingsD meldet, dass Apple am 2. März in San Francisco eine Presseveranstaltung abhalten wird. Angeblich soll der Event ganz im Zeichen des heisserwarteten iPad-Nachfolgers stehen. Die Financial Times und Reuters sollen die gleiche Info aus informierten Kreisen erhalten haben, so soll der iPad-2-Event am kommenden Mittwoch im Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco über die Bühne gehen. Vielleicht werden dann auch die neuen MacBook Pros vorgestellt — oder diese kommen bereits morgen Donnerstag. Bisher wurden jedoch von Apple noch keine Einladungen verschickt, es handelt sich vorerst also erst um ein Gerücht.

Munster: Mac sales up 20 percent this year
Apple's Mac sales are up 20 percent year-over-year and on target to meet expected sales of 3.6 million units in the March quarter, according to
new domestic sales data from the NPD Group.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster revealed the figures, and he says that he believes early numbers from the first month of Apple's second quarter of fiscal year 2011 mean Apple is on course to meet Wall Street expectations. Investors are expecting year-over-year growth of around 22 percent in the March quarter, and although growth in the US has only been around 20 percent, Munster notes that Apple has seen faster growth of the Mac platform in international markets.

DIe Firma Raonhaje spricht nassforsch von "Semi Submarine". Unter Wasser sind bei der oben abgebildeten "EGO" allerdings nur der Steuermann und ein Beifahrer, das Sonnendeck wird nie geflutet. Richtig abtauchen kann das Boot also nicht - eigentlich erinnert es uns auch eher an ein Glasboden- als an ein U-Boot. Der Preis bleibt geheim, aber dass es nicht ganz billig sein wird, kann man sich ja denken. Die kleine EGO wird von einem Elektromotor angetrieben und fährt knapp fünf Knoten in der Stunde. Nexus S und Nexus One bekommen Android Gingerbread 2.3.3, Facebook Kontakte fliegen beim Nexus S raus

Seit heute bekommt auch das Nexus One Android 2.3.3. Im neuesten Build der immer noch und weiterhin Gingerbread heisst gibt es noch mehr NFC, so dass das Nexus S NFC-Tags nicht nur lesen, sondern auch schreiben können soll (siehe Screenshot oben). Intel zeigt neue Technologie am Donnerstag, wahrscheinlich Light Peak
Light Peak ist soweit, jedenfalls in der 10 Gbps Kupfer-Variante und wir glauben, dass es wahrscheinlich von Apple in den neuen MacBooks zuerst eingesetzt wird. Für den morgigen Donnerstag hat Intel Journalisten nach San Francisco eingeladen, um "über eine neue Technologie zu reden, die kurz davor steht, auf den Markt zu kommen" und sie in ein paar Demos zu zeigen. I surrender, joining the ranks of the Airhead apocalypse
I own three Hackintosh netbooks. (Yes, each with a separate OS X license.) I love my Hackintosh netbooks but I can't use those Hackintosh netbooks. I can no longer pry them out of the all-embracing hands of my Mac-addicted children.
Last Friday, I placed my order for a refurb/open box Air. I am about to join the Air Club for Men (and Women).
So why move up? After three netbooks with Hackintosh installs, all of which I was entirely happy with, why am I buying Apple? Three big reasons people: software update, use case, and keyboard.

Gerüchte um neue MacBook Pros und «Light Peak»
Seit Januar haben Gerüchte um neue MacBook-Pro-Modelle Hochkonjunktur. Die Apple-Pro-Notebooks sollen in den Genuss von Intels neuer Prozessor-Generation «Sandy Bridge» kommen, statt magnetischer Festplatten neue SSDs und statt einem Aluminium-Gehäuse neu über einen Liquid-Metal-Mantel verfügen. Schlussendlich sollen die Notebooks einmal mehr Serien-Vorreiter einer neuen Technologie bei Apple sein: die neue superschnelle Schnittstelle «Light Peak» soll es ebenfalls in die nächste Aktualisierung einfliessen.
Die Aktualisierung der MacBook Pros steht offenbar kurz bevor — die Gerüchte überschlagen sich bereits täglich und die Lagerbestände der Books sollen bei einschlägigen Händlern (zumindest in den USA) ziemlich tief sein, nicht zuletzt listeten US-Händler anscheinend bereits neue MacBook-Pro-Modellnummern in ihrem Angebot.
Unsere Kollegen von MacGeneration wollen nun Details über die neuen Modelle erfahren haben, so soll es zum Beispiel künftig kein weisses MacBook-Modell mehr geben.

Patently Apple is running another of its excellent, exhaustively detailed listings of Apple's recently awarded patents. In the description of one of the awards, the site pointed out what they believe is an icon for an "E-Wallet" app, possibly pertaining to a Near Field Communications (NFC)-based electronic payment system. Gameloft VP: 'There is room for premium games at a premium price on the iPhone'

Seas0nPass for Mac now supports untethered AppleTV jailbreak
The folks over at FireCore LLC announced today that their Seas0nPass had been updated to includes an untethered jailbreak for the AppleTV 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1). Currently it is only for Mac but a Windows version "will be available soon."

Apple, others in talks to improve quality of music downloads
CNN reports that Apple is in touch with record labels to try and improve the quality of the downloadable music it sells on iTunes and elsewhere. Currently, the MP3s sold on iTunes are formatted as 16-bit files, but under the new proposal, they'd be upgraded to 24-bit files, which means the files would have more audio data included, and thus be able to play out at a higher resolution.

Spring Design Alex dies, forever remembered as the one that looked like the Nook

HP forecasts shaky outlook based on weak home PC demand
HP signaled potential problems with its home business both in its past quarter and in the near future. The Personal Systems Group, which covers its PCs and mobile devices, saw its winter revenue dip one percent year over year in a market where others were growing. It specifically singled out the home as sales of regular PCs, like the Pavilion line, plunged 12 percent.

Using a proprietary aerospace polymer in the frame, the Vapor Pro case has been designed in such a way to eliminate detuning of the iPhone 4's antenna, also known as the "grip of death." As with the all-aluminum Vapor case, the Vapor Pro is bundled with a machined installation tool. Intel Light Peak event on Thursday stokes MacBook Pro rumors
Intel on Tuesday said it would have a special event on Thursday to kick off the launch of a "new technology that is about to appear on the market," hinting at Light Peak in computers. The news will include both a San Francisco press brief as well as one at its Santa Clara campus that will include technology demos. While it didn't name Light Peak explicitly, the company just recently acknowledged that the interconnect was ready to be used.
