INQ Cloud Q busts from cover at MWC 2011 and we get glass-on

We've seen INQ's new Cloud Touch and heard about its QWERTY-packing sibling, the Cloud Q. Mobile World Congress has kindly given us the venue to switch heard for almost fondled. Yes, sadly our tour was eyes only as this set was carefully ensconced in glass, connected to cables, and generally unavailable to really touch. Of course, this is MWC and we're pretty certain we'll manage to wrangle one of our own -- but until then know that the same specs apply to both new devices. We were also told that while the devices above are the real deal, final hardware will feature a slightly

Photojojo provides a convenient telephoto lens for iPhone

The iPhone makes a great at-the-ready camera. Those of us appropriately sidearmed with an iPhone usually keep it easy to grab, which makes it the perfect device to yank from our pocket and snap a few pictures. And while the digital zoom is an awesome feature, it has limitations, and usually ends up killing the final photo quality. So you're stuck with the convenience of your iPhone versus its inevitable limitations as a camera. Photojojo has a solution. The iPhone Telephoto Lens screws onto an included iPhone case, allowing you to get up to 8x the normal amount of zoom. The lens fits in your pocket when you're not using it, so it's not like you're hauling around a huge accessory to go with your iPhone. Even better, the iPhone Te

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida drops some NGP knowledge: PSP sticking around, PS3 games easy to port

Details about Sony's next-gen portable Playstation, the NGP, have been scarce since we spoke with SCEA President-CEO Jack Tretton about the new device. However, in an interview in the forthcoming issue of Edge, Shuhei Yoshida --who happens to be president of SCEA Worldwide Studios -- revealed a few more tidbits about Sony's NGP strategy (alas, still no official price). Apparently, the PSP will stick around even after NGP's release because of high demand for the

Taiwan-based Apple.pro reports that Apple is working on three iPhone prototypes, two of which are mentioned in the report. Enterprise iPad adoption up to 80 percent in Fortune 100

Apple critics repeatedly say the iPad is a media consumption device, and not really fit for the heavy lifting in the enterprise environment. But think again folks, because the iPad is working itself into some of the the largest companies in the world. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that 65% of the the Fortune 100 have either deployed or have pilots running with the iPad already. Hands-on with Samsung's Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 vs. iPod touch

Although not strictly on the official docket, Samsung's Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 was on the show floor at Mobile World Congress, giving us an opportunity to try it out before details settled in. The device is similar to the Galaxy S phone on the inside but is targeted at an audience that might think the iPod touch is too modest, centering on a very large five-inch screen. We gave it a try at the Barcelona show and already had a sense for how it stacked up to its Apple counterpart.

The Daily trial extended to the end of February

Several TUAW readers have noticed that the trial version of The Daily has been extended through February 28. When the app debuted on February 2, Verizon announced that it was sponsoring a two-week free trial. This also brought forth the rumor of the public release of iOS 4.3 within that time frame. It's been nearly two weeks, but it hasn't happened. So why has the trial been extended? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below. I think it has less to do with the public release of iOS 4.3 and more with the fact that so many people

Verizon data limitations not unique to iPhone

There's a video up at 9to5 Mac which demonstrates how iPhones on Verizon and AT&T handle conference calling differently. Specifically, the CDMA-based Verizon phone is unable to jump between calls like the AT&T iPhone can. The user began by placing a call on both phones. Once connected, a second call was initiated. The AT&T phone let the user move between calls easily, placing the non-active call on hold. Finally, each call could be terminated individually. Meanwhile, the Verizon phone did not let the user jump between calls, and pressing the End button terminated both calls at once. We noticed that the user in the video didn't hit the Merge Calls button on either pho

Still more evidence has emerged that Apple may be working on a budget iPhone model, this time from UK tabloid the Daily Mail. Sonim XP3300 Force claims insane ruggedness, longest talk time in the world

Sonim, purveyors of insanely overbuilt handsets that are virtually guaranteed to survive far longer than you, is back at it again at MWC this year with the XP3300 Force. Though it looks a lot like the models that have come before it, the Force has a unique claim: it alleges to offer the longest talk time of any cellphone in the world at 20 to 24 hours, which can be traded in for 20 to 24 hours of continuous GPS tracking, along with 800 hours of standby. Sonim hangs on to its ruggedness chops by casting the Force in a fiberglass shell with 1.5 millimeters of Gorilla Glass over the display, all adding up to an IP-68-rated device that can withstand a two-meter drop onto concrete, tw

Square has billboard in Times Square, still slowly delivering card readers

If you've been reading TUAW for any length of time, you've probably seen our posts about Square. This startup had the idea to develop a free credit card reader that could be used with an iPhone (later expanded to many phone models) or iPad, and provide a card authorization service with low enough rates that basically anyone in the U.S. could accept credit cards. The service works very well; I've moved from a traditional credit card authorization service to Square, and I'm saving money in the process. However, an informal Twitter poll showed that there are still a number of people (including our very own Dave Caolo) who are still patiently waiting for their readers over a year after signing up. At Macworld 2011, I was shown the TabGrip (US$39.99), which looked and felt like a great iPad stand; I didn't realize that it had a major problem until I got it home and installed it. It's a stand that works in either landscape or portrait orientation. It consists of four riveted hard plastic sides connected by a soft and pliable rubber backing that allows you to stretch it so that each side snaps onto each of the four sides of the iPad. The four riveted sides contain a hinged foot that allows you to stand your iPad just about any way you'd like. It is very uncomfortable on your lap, but it's meant to be stood on a table, so no problem there. The feet don't lock, so you really can't exert too much pressure on it before the feet slide down, but it's really not me

We've just barely begun to get ready with Steve Ballmer's keynote at MWC 2011, yet the company's Twitter and press feeds just scooped its main man. It's confirmed that Windows Phone 7 is getting multitasking for third-party apps and a suite of other updates, including Twitter integration and IE9 Mobile. We're still waiting on details on the multitasking, but the company has confirmed a "new wave of multitasking applications" in this next release, though hopefully that means open to all. Twitter will be integrated into the People Hub, so you can get your real-time "what's for dinner" updates right there, and

Did Motorola's agency 'borrow' Super Bowl ad concept?

Motorola is in hot water over its Apple-inspired Super Bowl advertisement for its upcoming XOOM tablet. The video ad features a world of drones dressed in white hoodies who are eternally plugged into white earbuds. Of course, the one character breaking the trend is the one with a Motorola XOOM tablet who is able to free both himself and a female friend from this mindless, solitary existence. This idea of disconnecting from a connected world is a theme that dominates a popular Indie film produced by Mike Sarrow. The filmmmaker asserts his Do Not Dis

The biggest is a part of Acer's skin atop Android 2.2, which is set to be upgraded to Gingerbread "soon," a boilerplate promise with any device not running Google's latest. The Liquid mt offers multiple lock screens, allowing you to do things like control media and check your messaging inbox without having to unlock the phone and enter an app. It's a pretty sweet implementation, as is the simulated page-turning unlocking animation. It's a port of an old Ubisoft title, so the controls aren't quite perfect, but it's an excellent platformer, and if you've never played through this game but like the genre, you should definitely give it a shot. There's no Game Center integration or any extra features, but if you just want to explore your way solo through the 45 different levels, the game is great.

Intel talks Medfield: will ship in a phone and have the longest usage time

We had a feeling we'd be hearing about Intel's Atom for smartphones here at Mobile World Congress, and Intel did in fact take the stage today to talk about its forthcoming Medfield processor. The company has announced that it is starting to sample or test its 32nm Medfield processor for mobile devices with its customers (obviously, it's not telling us with ones) and more importantly that it will ship in a phone. Yep, Intel's Senior Vice President Anand Chandrasekher spoke quite firmly about how the platform will in fact ship in smartphones and it will support Android. He pulled out the phone above just as a proof point, and while he didn't say who made it, we have a sneaking suspicion it is that

iPro Aviator pilot's kneeboard: Great in cockpit, car or classroom

The big iPad and flight tech story this weekend involved chart vendor Jeppesen and charter operator Executive Jet Management. The companies received authorization from the FAA to use iPads running the Jeppesen Mobile TC App for iPad as an electronic flight bag, replacing the traditional leather pilot's bag full of paper charts. One of the caveats of using the iPad is that it must be secured and visible during all phases of flight. The usual way for pilots to keep charts and notes at hand is to use a kneeboard, which is essentially a clipboard strapped to the pilot's leg so that it can stay in place and be easily readable. Last year, shortly after the iPad hit the market, TUAW ran a post about an

We just got a first hands-on with the Huawei S7, a 7-inch Android tablet which will be priced at $300. Huwaei was unable to provide us with any information beyond pricing, but here's what we've gathered. The 7-inch touch screen is capacitive, and the unit we played with was running a slightly customized skin on top of Android 2.2 (FroYo). Build quality is solid and the device is satisfyingly thin an light. There are cameras front and back and a microSD card slot and a docking port on the bottom edge. We spied a SIM slot underneath the battery, so it's likely that the model we used features 3G. We hope to have more details for you soon -- in the meantime, feast your eyes on the ga

ViewSonic ViewPad 10Pro hands-on

We promised to dig up ViewSonic's dual-booting Windows 7 and Android 2.2 ViewPad 10Pro tablet when we got to Barcelona, and here we are delivering on our word. We just got a chance to check out the 10.1-inch slate and we have to say hardware-wise, we're dealing with typical ViewSonic quality -- the 1024 x 600-resolution, capacitive screen isn't exactly high quality (horizontal viewing angles were pretty bad) and the build was mediocre at best. However, software-wise we have to say the 10Pro is pretty interesting -- the Intel Atom Oak Trail-powered slab boots Windows 7 Home Premium, but is running Android

LG Optimus 3D hands-on

Glory be the LG Optimus 3D. Okay, we'll get right to it: the Optimus 3D is kinda kitschy, but at the same time fun, inevitable on a mobile device, and still a great conversation piece. The 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D display's effect in games, film, and even the UI is pretty convincing using the set's applied parallax barrier technology, which is otherwise unnoticeable while the effect is off. Best bit? You can film your own 3D videos using the dual cameras on the back then watch them on your 3D set via HDMI. The Optimus is by no means a tiny set, though, still pretty comfy when held. The March 1st date is plausible considering that Intel is reportedly set to ship its new Sandy Bridge processors on February 20th and it has been previously reported that new MacBook Pros will drop in March. Also, March 1 falls on a Tuesday, which is traditionally the weekday Apple chooses to announce new computer models. Beyond the reason

Wall Street Journal backs up 'iPhone nano' rumor

We may be in for quite the shakeup of the iOS world if Ethan Smith's new article in the Wall Street Journal has any weight to it. Smith makes some pretty bold claims about a new, less-expensive iPhone which he states has an edge-to-edge screen and weighs quite a bit less than the current iPhone 4.
