Apple invites security experts to review Lion developer preview
CNET reports that Apple has sent notice to a few big-time security experts, including some folks who've attacked OS X security in the past, to check out the developer preview of OS X Lion. "As you have reported Mac OS X security issues in the past," the letter reportedly tells the researchers, "I thought that you might be interested in taking a look at this. It contains several improvements in the area of security countermeasures."
Note that this isn't actual consulting on the part of these researchers, though they are getting a preview copy of the OS for free. Dino Dai Zovi is one of the experts that Apple invited to check out the system, and he

Verizon: iPhone sales are good, Apple 4G devices in the pipe
Verizon's wireless chief Dan Mead in an interview on Friday rebuffed claims that the iPhone 4 was underselling. He revealed that about 60 percent of CDMA iPhone sales so far were online and that it was only the record pre-order sales that resulted in a low retail turnout on launch day. Mead wouldn't give actual sales numbers to the WSJ or others until Verizon's fiscal quarter was finished, much as AT&T usually waits to show is own activations.

MLB At Bat 11 apps for iPhone, iPad now available
With the wintry weather that seems to be hitting a lot of the U.S. today, most people probably aren't thinking about the start of the 2011 Major League Baseball season. There are two sure signs of spring today -- the MLB players started playing Spring Training exhibition games today, and the MLB At Bat 11 apps for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad are now available for sale in the App Store.

Verizon CEO claims Apple LTE products are coming, doesn't specify when
Dan Mead, Lowell McAdam's successor at the helm of Verizon Wireless, has told the Wall Street Journal that we'll "see more coming from Apple on LTE. They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be a part of it." No further details were forthcoming from the chief exec, such as timing and the particular shape of Apple's participation in Verizon's LTE plans, but at least we now have an indication that Cupertino is actively working toward 4G connectivity. South Korea's SK Telecom to offer Apple iPhone starting in March
SK Telecom has confirmed it intends to carry the iPhone 4, ending KT's exclusivity with the popular Apple smartphone. According to the statement, SK Telecom will announce launch and pricing details at a later date. Currently, the wireless carrier leads the pack in South Korea with slight over half of the cellular market. Its current smartphone profile is peppered with Android handsets from local manufacturers LG and Samsung.

Motorola dragged into court for Xoom trademark infringement
To Xoom or not to Xoom, that is the question -- and Xoom Corporation says Motorola needs to ditch the name of its new Honeycomb-laden slate. That's right, Xoom has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit asking for monetary damages, a temporary restraining order, and / or a preliminary injunction to spoil Moto's release party for its new tablet. In case you're curious, Xoom (the company) does seem to predate the slate by a good bit: it's been operating its online payments business under that name and has owned the www.xoom.com domain since 2003. Xoom got a registered service mark for its money transfer and e-payment services in 2004.

Proposed Apple patent shows touch controls on notebook lids
An Apple patent application, published this week, could hint at company interest in adding touch-sensitive controls to the MacBook's exterior. Titled Methods and Apparatus for Capacitive Sensing, the patent describes a method of embedding capacitive touch controls within a metal surface instead of glass. Lots of App Store sales going on this weekend
I can't think of anything really special about this weekend (though GDC is coming up next week), but quite a few app developers have put their apps on sale for some reason. Here are some of the deals in Apple's App Stores this weekend:

First Hong Kong Apple Store to open this year
The South China Morning Post reports that Apple will open its first retail store in Hong Kong later this year. The International Finance Center (IFC) Mall in the central district of Hong Kong Island will host the new 15,000 square foot location. A second Hong Kong Apple store, a 20,000 square foot shop in Hysan Place in Causeway Bay, is planned for 2012.

Windows Phone 7 coming to Verizon in March, starting with HTC 7 Trophy?
With Sprint starting up its Windows Phone 7 adventure on March 20th with the HTC Arrive, Verizon is now said to be matching its CDMA competitor with its own offering, the HTC 7 Trophy. We already knew this particular handset would be coming to this particular network in "early 2011," but now WinRumors has narrowed that down to a launch at some point in late March. Mac OS X Lion to be first with TRIM support for SSDs
A finding in the developer preview of Mac OS X Lion has confirmed that the OS will have much needed support for auto-tuning solid-state drives. System Profiler now automatically detects SSDs with the TRIM command, and the OS now presumably uses the technique to clean up the drive. The MacGeneration investigation found that Apple's Toshiba-sourced SSD for the MacBook Air was already recognized, but third-party drives weren't yet enabled.

Ouch! Consumer reports slams the Verizon iPhone 4
Not the most breathtaking revelation, but Consumer Reports won't put the Verizon iPhone 4 on its list of recommended smartphones. The Verizon iPhone joins the AT&T model in earning the ad-free publication's lack of enthusiasm.

Samsung Galaxy S II gets very preliminary, expensive UK pricing
Don't go jumping off the Android sailboat just yet, these are very early numbers, but the Samsung Galaxy S II has been priced by a couple of UK retailers and the category they've placed it in is the distinctly high end. Expansys is listing £630 ($1,020) for the Gingerbread-sporting unlocked handset, while Play.com has it at £600 ($971) and is promising a March 31st release date. Even if you're zany enough to put the cash up for a pre-order today, do take note that Play was showing the cost at £650 (with £670 RRP) only yesterday, so pricing still seems to be fluctuating and finding its sweet spot. Having already taken our first feverish steps down the path of an automated home, we figured it wsa time to try and integrate the home entertainment system with the household lighting. Consumer Reports won't recommend Verizon iPhone 4 either
Consumer Reports contradicted itself on Friday with a new update saying it wouldn't give a recommendation for the Verizon iPhone 4. The magazine said it still saw the signal drop sharply when covering the bottom-left antenna gap, bridging the antennas and lowering the signal. Calls started dropping or wouldn't start at the very fringe of the signal where other Verizon phones, such as the Droid 2 Global and Fascinate, still held out.

World's first robot marathon gets off to a slow start, will likely stay that way
It might take them a good 92 hours longer than the fastest human runners, but a group of five pint-sized humanoids have officially embarked on the world's first full-length robot marathon. The Robo Mara Full, put on by Japanese robotics company Vstone, kicked off today in Osaka, Japan, and will see the mechanized competitors through a 42 kilometer (26 mile) race, estimated to last at least four days. During the marathon, entrants will circle a 100-meter indoor track a total of 422 times with little help from their human coaches -- contact is only permitted during battery and servo replacement. BBC event to coincide with iPad 2 announcement?
The BBC is holding an unspecified event which may be tied to an Apple announcement of the second-generation iPad, a British report suggests. Apple has a special press event scheduled for March 2nd in San Francisco, starting at 10AM local time. The BBC event is said to be a go for 6PM GMT that day, which could mean that some live interaction between the UK and US is planned.

Android 3.0 has just 17 tablet apps as USA Today joins in
Android 3.0 got off to a slow start in the past day as the OS launched with just a small number of tablet apps. A quick check by jkOnTheRun showed just 16 apps that could use the larger screen size. USA Today on Friday became the 17th with a new app that provided much of its news in the widescreen format of devices like the Xoom.

Lion will drop support for earliest Intel Macs
In the past two releases of Mac OS X, we've seen the baseline support for legacy machines hiked a notch higher each time; for Leopard, eliminating slower G4s from the working list, and for Snow Leopard dropping PowerPC support entirely in favor of the newer Intel models.

MobileMe now only available as free online trial
MobileMe is indeed only available from Apple online, a worker at an Apple Store Genius Bar has confirmed. The person shares a screenshot from Apple's Sales Web interface, which prominently displays a "now exclusively available online" tagline. The website also explicitly mentions the removal of boxed copies from Apple Stores, but not the elimination of a bundle option for online orders.

So what works with FaceTime?
Apple comes to the rescue with a KnowledgeBase posting that will give you all the details on what systems are capable of using FaceTime. As you may know, FaceTime HD is a new feature of the just released MacBook Pro line, and Apple has taken FaceTime for the rest of us out of beta and made it a US $0.99 app.

Der Name ist gut gewählt und selbsterklärend. Aufklebbare Nöppel für Touchscreens, um beim Spielen genau das wieder zu bringen, was sonst den meisten bislang fehlte: Knöpfe. For the viewing pleasure of those folks who were tuned into TUAW TV Live on Wednesday, February 16, we had a little disco inferno going. Tipped by a reader about a godawful Apple marketing film titled "We Are Apple: Leading The Way," it was so bad it just had to be good. Now we have a few more facts, including that this video was shown at the introduction of the Mac.
There are some memorable moments -- like a guy carrying a 60-lb. Apple Lisa under his arm like it was a MacBook Air. Most of all, it's the screechy Irene Cara-like disco soundtrack, heavily copying from "What a Feeling" from the movie Flashdance, that makes your stomach churn.

T-Mobile back to losing subs without iPhone, new Android
T-Mobile's US branch swung back to losing subscribers owing to its struggles to lure customers away from the iPhone and rival Android supporters. It lost a total of 23,000 subscribers in its latest quarter, ended in January, where it had added 137,000 users the season before and 371,000 a year ago. The overall customer turnover rate was also up to 3.6 percent and about three times higher than what was seen at AT&T and Verizon.

HTC Merge official, coming to 'multiple' US carriers this spring
Boy, we've had so many leaked materials relating to the HTC Merge that we kind of assumed the handset was official by now. Never mind, HTC is taking care of that little oversight now, admittedly much later than we expected the phone to arrive, by announcing that the Merge will arrive on multiple US carriers in the spring. It brings Android 2.2, skinned with HTC's Sense UI, a 3.8-in touchscreen plus that slide-out keyboard, and a 5 megaixel autofocus camera with 720p video recording. Not bad, now let's see how those carriers decide to price this mid-range contender.

New rumor backs possibility of carbon fiber in iPad 2
The second-generation iPad may indeed use a carbon fiber body, according to Daring Fireball's John Gruber. The information is considered "half-sure," as it was obtained from "second-hand" sources who are themselves said to be uncertain. Gruber is generally believed to have a good track record however, and was one of the first to insist that the second-gen iPad would not get an ultra-sharp display. That view is now broadly accepted.

Verizon's dropped 911 calls leave one woman trapped in burning house (video)
We're just hearing of a story that makes that 10,000 or so emergency calls that didn't go through over Verizon's network on January 26 look a little more serious. A house in Silver Spring, Maryland caught fire that evening during the snowstorm that knocked out power and landlines. A neighbor, noticing the house was ablaze, tried calling 911 on his cellphone but couldn't get through. Xtreamer has just introduced a new media streaming hub called the Prodigy. The advanced device sports a Realtek 1185 chipset and has USB 3.0 ports. A sharp break, however, is its unique combination of seemingly conflicting technology. Neuer Reparaturmechanismus in Mac OS X Lion

In seinen Einzelteilen: MacBook Pro im Teardown

Auf ifixit ist immer Verlass. Kaum da, schon wieder auseinandergenommen, in diesem Falle das gestern vorgestellte MacBook Pro in 15 Zoll mit i7-CPU und natürlich mit Thunderbolt. Sonst bleibt nur zu sagen, dass zwar im Innern sich einiges getan haben mag. Das Unibody-Gehäuse aber noch immer die gleiche Nummer trägt (A1286) wie das Modell vom Herbst 2008. Da hat sich also nicht allzuviel getan. Eine Randnotiz für die Nörgler unter den Fanboys.

New MacBook Pro benchmarks show marked improvement
Primate Labs snagged the latest Geekbench 2 results for the new MacBook Pros and compared the benchmarks to previous generation models. Good news for those planning to grab a latest generation model. SEC filings show Sugar, Jobs with most shareholder votes
The newest member of Apple's board of directors, Ronald Sugar, led the way in terms of re-election votes at this week's shareholder meeting, a Form 8-K submitted to the SEC reveals. Sugar in fact trumped CEO Steve Jobs, getting 3.5 million more votes to sit in excess of 574 million. Sugar has only been with Apple since November.

Xoom teardown shows part shared with iPhone, easy 4G upgrade
Motorola's just-launched Xoom has received a customary teardown that has revealed an unintentional link to the iPhone and just how simple the 4G upgrade process wil be. iFixit found that the Android 3.0 tablet, despite being EVDO-only right now, has the same Qualcomm MDM6600 modem as the Verizon iPhone. The method suggests the Verizon Xoom is the same model as the one shipping worldwide and that other countries will get 14.4Mbps HSPA+ 3G instead.

Sony entwickelt neue CMOS Sensoren: 17,7 MP Video und 120ps

YouTube movie service may be unlimited, hit UK first
Google's YouTube movie service plans may intentionally avoid the fierce competition in the US if a purported leak on Friday is real. The company would roll out the service in the UK and Europe as a whole, only moving to the US later. Sony preps ultra-fast 17.7MP phone camera
Sony late Thursday said it had developed a small, phone-sized 17.7-megapixel camera sensor that would overcome much of the performance bottlenecks of earlier technology. The technique, described by Nikkei [reg. required], can process several pixels' input in parallel and takes up to 75 percent less time to generate the final image. At 34.8Gbps of bandwidth, it's about five times faster than a typical phone camera and can handle burst photography or high-speed video that wouldn't have been an option before.

There are plenty of apps that find restaurants, hospitals and other things near you using the iPhone's GPS. Localscope, a US$1.99 app, is the most complete and easy to use solution I've seen.
Localscope easily lets you find destinations using Google or Bing, Foursquare, Twitter and Wikimapia. You don't have to re-enter your search terms, just slide from one search engine to another. Yerba Buena Center wird für den Special Event vorbereitet
In der Nacht auf gestern wurde das Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco für den am Mittwoch stattfindenden Special-Event von Apple vorbereitet. Das Center befindet sich gleich vis-a-vis dem vom Tessiner Architekten Mario Botta gebauten «Museum of Modern Art» und ist in der Nähe des Moscone Center, in welchem jährlich die Macworld aber auch die WWDC von Apple stattfindet. Im Yerba Buena Center for the Arts hatte Apple in den vergangenen Jahren bereits mehrere Events abgehalten, für Mittwoch ist ein Event mit dem Slogan «Come see what 2011 will be the year of». Nicht zuletzt ein hinter der Einladung hervorschauender iPad gibt Aufschluss darüber, dass der iPad wohl eine zentrale Rolle am Special Event tragen wird. Auch das die «2» — stellvertretend für den «2. März» — sehr gross zu sehen ist, wird als Hinweis darauf interpretiert, dass am Mittwoch die zweite iPad-Generation folgen wird. Apple hat am gestrigen Donnerstag mit der aktualisierten MacBook-Pro-Reihe auch einen neuen Anschluss präsentiert, der «Thunderbolt» heisst. «Thunderbolt» ist ein neuer Anschluss, den Intel eben erst gestern offiziell angekündigt hat. Apple wird «Thunderbolt» mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit in Zukunft sehr prominent adaptieren, dass der Anschluss also in naher Zukunft auch Einzug in die restlichen Macs halten wird, dürfte klar sein. Vielleicht geht Apple gar soweit und verpasst auch den iOS-Geräten — allen voran dem für nächste Woche erwarteten iPad 2 — eine Thunderbolt-Schnittstelle. Geht es nach Intel und Apple, ist Thunderbolt «the next big thing».

WebKit mit stark erweiterten Web Inspector
Der Chrome-Entwickler Alexander Pavlov hat über die letzten Monate hinweg den Web Inspector des WebKit-Projekts weiterentwickelt. Pavlov verbesserte bestehende Funktionen und fügte dem Inspector verschiedene neue Funktionen hinzu.
In einem Artikel auf dem offiziellen WebKit-Projekt-Blog «Surfin’ Safari» erläutert Pavlov nun die neuen Funktionen betreffend den CSS-Funktionen des Inspectors. Neben den in diesem Artikel beschriebenen neuen Style-Funktionen enthält der neue Inspector gegenüber dem aktuellen aus Safari unter anderem auch einen neuen Reiter «Audits». «Audits» gibt Ratschläge betreffend der Netzwerk- und allgemeinen Webseiten-Performance — es ist am besten mit den Bekannten, optionalen «Google Page Speed»- und «YSlow» Firefox-Erweiterungen vergleichbar, ausser das «Audits» als Bestandteil des Inspector bereits zur Grundausstattung des Browsers gehört. Apple to open first store in Hong Kong this year
As we reported last summer, Apple has aggressive plans for more stores in China this year -- and now the South China Morning Post is reporting that the first of two planned Hong Kong stores will open before the end of the year. The first store is described as a 15,000 square-foot store in the IFC Mall in Central, while the second store will be an even larger 20,000 square feet in Hysan Place in Causeway Bay, which is expected to open in the third quarter of 2012, according to the paper.

Preview notes for today's developer release of Lion require a Core 2 Duo machine or later, a requirement that may make it to the final release -- leaving out certain classes of early Intel Macs sold in 2006 and 2007. Android catching up to iPhone in Japan, still well behind
Android is catching up to the iPhone in Japan but is much further back, new data from comScore found on Thursday. Google's platform exploded over the last half of 2010 and jumped from just 435,000 users in June to almost 2.2 million at the end of that year. The gap with Apple was noticeably wider than it was in the US, however, as Apple still grew from about 2.6 million Japanese owners just at the cusp of the iPhone 4 launch to 3.8 million six months later.

Tips back iPad 2 carrying A5, but SD and high-res LCD out
A low-key leak on Thursday may have helped narrow down what's likely to show at Apple's March 2 iPad event. It's now believed by Engadget tipsters that the dual-core A5 processor, 512MB of RAM and camera support are intact for the final launch, but some tentative features have been left out. "Engineering issues" have seen Apple remove the high-resolution display and SD card slot, the tips said.

Apple files for trademark on 'Places' social networking
Apple has filed a trademark application with the European Union (based on an earlier filing in Jamaica) to protect the name "Places" as a social networking service that may offer the ability to find friends via GPS. The application, filed yesterday, is categorized under for very broad classes covering almost every technology-related activity one could think of, but particularly lists the name as being used for "online social networking services."

New MacBook Pros outperform some recent Mac Pros
Some of the very earliest benchmark tests of Apple's new MacBook Pros have shown them fast enough to outperform some Mac Pro workstations. Geekbench scores for the new 2.2GHz and 2.3GHz quad Core i7 processors are regularly reaching over 10,000 and producing better integer and floating point scores than Apple's pro towers from a year or two ago. Some results, such as one test for a 2.2GHz MacBook Pro, are outperforming the 3.2GHz and 3.33GHz quad-core Xeons from Mac Pros in 2010 and 2009 respectively.

iPhoto 101: Use two fingers to crop and rotate photos
Here's an interesting feature of iPhoto that I'd never heard before, courtesy of Mac OS X Hints. While using Edit mode in the app, you can drag two fingers on your MacBook's touchpad (or your Magic Trackpad) to control the various edits with better precision than just dragging around a mouse. You can zoom the crop feature in or out, or even control it manually by dragging two fingers around. And you can rotate the photo in straighten mode just by rotating two fingers around the trackpad.
There are more of these little gesture features hidden in Apple's iApps (like a three-finger swipe in iPhoto to move forward/backward through photos), and I'm sure we'll see a lot more of this pop up as w

Google following Apple's strict in-app purchase strategy?
Google may be following an in-app purchase strategy similar to that of rival Apple. Visual VoiceMail developer PhoneFusion claims its app was removed from the Android Market for skirting Google Checkout and using a separate system to take in-app payments, though the search giant has yet to fully detail which terms of the developer payment rules were violated.

MacDec provides another way to combine keyboard and Magic Trackpad
There's a growing number of devices that allow Mac users to combine their keyboards and Magic TrackPads into a single unit. Steve Sande took a look at TwelveSouth's MagicWand not long ago.

NZ earthquake hits Mac/iOS devs; Dejal Software creates relief effort
The magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit Christchurch, New Zealand on Tuesday has caused incredible damage and hit close to home for many of us at TUAW. Developer David Frampton (@majicdave on Twitter) from Majic Jungle Software had a particularly scary few days. Although Dave lives in Wellington on the North Island, his mother Ann Bodkin was trapped in rubble for several days before being rescued. We were thrilled to read Dave's tweet when she was close to being rescued: "Mum is alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still trapped, but talking to rescuers. So so unbelievably happy and relieved."

Fruit Ninja and Max Adventure for iOS updated with new content
Two of TUAW's favorite App Store apps (and probably yours as well) have been updated with new content. Halfbrick's Fruit Ninja has a few new swords to play with, including one that plays piano music as you swipe. There are new leaderboards to fight your friends (and everyone else on) for the Classic and Zen modes. Great free update for a terrific app -- no wonder it's sold six million copies (inspiring Halfbrick to build up an orchard to pay back karma for all that destroyed virtual fruit).

Apple successfully past label blocks on iTunes cloud locker
Apple may have finally overcome music label resistance to its iTunes and MobileMe media locker plans, multiple media executives said Thursday [reg. required].
