Twitter updates Android app, we go hands-on in more than 140 characters
If you're an avid Twitter user and an avid Android smartphone user, you've been waiting for this day. The day where those developers at Twitter's headquarters man up and release a Twitter app that can seriously compete with the likes of TweetDeck, Twidroid, and HootSuite. Well, fellow tweeters, it appears that time has come -- the official Twitter Android 2.0 app just hit the Market and it includes a pretty drastic UI overhaul, some bug fixes, and a few more key features.

OtterBox outs new iPad case, Defender ready for Verizon
OtterBox has announced that its high-end iPhone 4 case, the Defender, should work out-of-the-box with Verizon as well as AT&T phones. The case combines an outer silicone layer with a polycarbonate shell and a built-in screen protector. It's claimed to protect against most forms of damage, although OtterBox specifically cautions that it is not waterproof.

Apple mulling $200 off-contract iPhone to tackle Android
Apple has been developing a budget version of the iPhone that would help undercut Android, a leak Thursday afternoon maintained. The new version would be a third smaller and much less expensive, possibly as little as $200 off-contract. The design described to Bloomberg would use components from current iPhones to drop the price down.

Are Apple's iAds in trouble?
I probably could have told you this one based on the anecdotal data I've heard from developers lately, but "insiders" have told MobileCrunch that Apple's iAd service isn't doing quite as well as Apple had hoped. The fill rate -- which refers to actual ad space that's filled with a paid ad -- has dropped from 18% to 6% according to the rumors, which means that even though Apple has developers ready to show ads, it's having trouble actually finding advertisers to pay for them.

Bloomberg: Apple working on 'cheaper, smaller' and dual-mode iPhones, trying to kill SIMs along the way
Bloomberg is citing -- you guessed it -- "people who have been briefed on the plans" as saying that Apple is hard at work on taking the iPhone downmarket with a new model that's roughly one-third smaller than the existing iPhone 4, possibly with the intent on delivering it midyear using mostly carryover components from the iPhone 4 to keep pricing down. Thing is, Bloomberg says that Apple is looking at launching the "cheaper" model at $200 off contract, which would be the same as the 16GB iPhone 4 on contract currently. BlackBerry PlayBook locked for Android, skipping Dalvik?
Rumors that RIM would have the BlackBerry PlayBook run Android apps gained credibility with corroborating claims on Thursday. The company is said developing an extension for the second half of the year that would let the tablet run apps for Google's platform along with its own. It was originally to have been outsourced but is now being developed in-house, Bloomberg heard.

Dip in Apple shares linked to rumors of Jobs hospital stay
A brief but sudden and sharp dip in Apple stock price on Thursday may have been connected to a rumor CEO Steve Jobs was in hospital, reports say. While at one point sitting close to $360, shares started sliding at 1PM Eastern, then fell off the edge at 1:39, going from $355 to $349 in a matter of just four minutes. The impact was enough to knock $10 billion off Apple's market capitalization.

Yahoo! announces Livestand for iPad, available first half 2011
If you've been following TUAW's reports about The Daily, you're aware that many of the TUAW bloggers are so fed up with the buggy, crashing newspaper app that they've removed it from their iPads while the app is still free. For me, the crashes and slow loading weren't as much of an irritant as the lack of customizable and local content. I just don't want to pay for horoscopes, fashion news, and entertainment gossip that I can't turn off, and the fact that I can't read any local news on the app killed it for me.

HTC Thunderbolt makes FCC appearance?
It looks like HTC just got the go-ahead for a 4G smartphone from that great predictor of market preparedness, the FCC -- and all signs point to Thunderbolt. iPhone passcode bypassed by security researchers
A group of German researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute Secure Information Technology report they've cracked the iPhone's keychain system, allowing access to the passwords saved on any phone in just six minutes. By jailbreaking the target phone and installing an SSH app on it, the hackers found they could access any information on the phone that they wanted, without the need to input a passcode or any other form of security from the user. In other words, if they can get their hands on your iPhone, they have access to everything on the keychain, which includes any Gmail or Exchange accounts saved on the phone, as well as network, Wi-Fi, and voicemail passwords, as well as the passwords on some apps.

iAd network suffering, say industry sources
Apple's iAd network is in serious trouble at the moment, a variety of industry sources suggest. Several developers mention that fill rates for iAd fell sharply after the New Year; in particular, two separate developers say that their rates dropped from 18 percent to just 6. In some instances apps are said to be going without any iAds, despite the fact that other mobile ad networks are delivering near-total fill rates. Hand-sewn, hyperlinked book is a thing of beauty, and a joy for several minutes
It's not every day that you see something handcrafted with time and care on the internet, but what you see above certainly qualifies. An art / craft project by German designer Maria Fischer, it's called Thoughts on Dreams, it contains threaded 'hyperlinks' which are there to help guide the reader to links between important passages. The book is sadly (for us) in German, so we can't know what it says, but we can imagine that it's all sorts of beautiful, mysterious things that can only be conveyed by paper and colored string.There is one more image after the break, just because.

Gruber: iPad 3 coming this fall?
We don't have an official announcement of the iPad 2 yet, but Daring Fireball's John Gruber is already speculating that the iPad 3 -- what he says will be a competitor to the just-announced HP TouchPad -- will be ready by fall.
"If my theory is right, they're [HP] not only going to be months behind the iPad 2, but if they slip until late summer, they might bump up against the release of the iPad 3," Gruber speculated on Wednesday.

Verizon's LG VL600 4G modem next up with Mac support
Verizon has quietly added Mac support to the second of its two current 4G modems. The LG VL600 now works with any Mac supporting Mac OS X Tiger or later in 32-bit mode. Verizon iPhone costs $16 less than AT&T's version in parts
Apple has managed to lower the cost of making the Verizon iPhone by a wide margin, iSuppli found in a new cost breakdown. While superficially similar, the CDMA version costs just $171.35 to build, or just $16.16 more than the AT&T model's $187.51. Many of the savings come from the new Qualcomm MDM6600, which includes its own GPS receiver and has saved Apple the cost of the separate Broadcom chip.

NYU professor unsurprisingly removes camera from the back of his head, citing pain and the malaise of lifecasting
Well, this one is not really a surprise. NYU Professor / artist Wafaa Bilal had a removable camera installed into the back of his head via a surgically implanted titanium plate to assist him with his lifecasting. Turns out that the camera cause a decent amount of pain caused by his body rejecting the foreign object -- again, no big surprise there. Skype updates iOS app for Verizon iPhone
All of the new Verizon iPhone 4 owners who are looking for apps to install on their shiny new devices can add Skype to the list. The free Skype app has been updated today so that it functions properly on the Verizon iPhone, and the update also adds support for the H.264 codec. This support is crucial to allowing Skype users to call from their iOS devices to more Skype-enabled devices, including new TVs from Panasonic and Samsung.
Of course, now that you're on the "Can You Hear Me Now?[TM]" network, you shouldn't need to resort to Skype for your calls, should you?

Pre-release Galaxy S 4G beats HTC, iPhone in speed test
Four handsets with the 4G moniker in their names were recently tested by MSNBC for download speeds. This includes the pre-production Galaxy S 4G due at T-Mobile, the currently available myTouch 4G from the same provider, the Sprint HTC Evo Shift 4G and AT&T's HTC Inspire 4G, along with the AT&T iPhone 4 that runs on 3G networks. The experiment found that not all 4G-labeled devices deliver the same kind of performance, which is what leads to consumer confusion.

Obama announces plan to free up 500MHz of spectrum, invest in 4G for rural areas, and build out nationwide public safety network
We knew the White House was on board with the FCC's desire to free up an additional 500MHz worth of spectrum over the next decade from private and federal holders, as announced last year, and now Obama has announced the plan to do it. The plan is to incentivize the current spectrum squatters with a share of the revenue gained from auctioning off the spectrum -- mostly for mobile broadband use -- which only seems fair, and for now it seems those auctions will be voluntary. Qualcomm gets official with TouchPad-powering Snapdragon APQ8060 processor
HP already put out the first official word about Qualcomm's new Snapdragon APQ8060 processor yesterday when it revealed that its TouchPad was based on it, but Qualcomm's now also come out and properly announced the new processor itself. That's, of course, a dual-core processor, and comes paired with an Adrene 220 GPU that Qualcomm says helps to deliver "unprecedented processing and 3D graphics performance." Apple patent application hints at iTunes cloud features
The USPTO has published another Apple patent application, Audio Clips for Announcing Remotely Accessed Media Items, according to AppleInsider. The patent describes a scheme with a centralized list of media files, but with the distinction that only some of the content is local, the rest being situated on a remote server. Apple's filing is particularly concerned with VoiceOver-style announcements of content, which could be either kept locally or streamed from a remote source.

Samsung could supply its Super PLS LCD technology for an upcoming iPad, a Korean newspaper rumored late Wednesday. AT&T could lose 26% of iPhone customers, study suggests
With Verizon picking up the iPhone 4 in the U.S., market research firm ChangeWave decided to see just how much of an impact the new carrier would have on AT&T. The result of a survey of over 4,000 U.S. consumers shows that a whopping 26% of respondents said that they would drop AT&T for Verizon.
42 percent of the folks who say they're going to move to VZW say that they're tired of the poor reception they get on the AT&T network, while 27 percent stated that dropped calls were the reason.

German institute details iOS password vulnerability
A state-sponsored German institute, Fraunhofer SIT, says it has identified a vulnerability in iOS devices which allows passwords to be stolen in as little as six minutes. Although a device must first be jailbroken and an SSH connection established, pulling passwords is otherwise said to require just a special Keychain access script, which exploits iOS functions to output any account data. Enabling a passcode on the OS fails to offer any protection.

TUAW's Daily App: Devil May Cry 4 refrain
This is part of Capcom's holiday sale for Valentine's Day (which is probably also intended to target some new Verizon customers), but Devil May Cry 4 refrain is a pretty good port of the console action game anyway. It features a character named Nero fighting with both guns and a big sword through all kinds of demonic baddies, with the standard Devil May Cry action combos building up as you play along. Unfortunately, like most of these games, buttons are merely overlays on the touchscreen, so really dedicated action gamers may not enjoy the lack of tactile controls. But if you like this action genre at all, DMC4 refrain is a pretty solid version, albeit obviously scaled down for Apple's platform.

As we've seen, the FDA approval process for medical devices and other gadgets can be a long one, but it looks like things could soon be speeding up considerably. The agency has just announced a new "Innovation Pathway" program that promises to allow for priority reviews of "truly pioneering technologies," which could potentially cut the approval process time in half. But if you lose your iPhone and don't issue a remote wipe command (available for free with the Find My iPhone app) then you could find yourself in a world of hurt. In Pages für iPad sind bereits Vorkehrungen für Retina-Display-Tauglichkeit getroffen worden. Verschiedene Icons sind in 64×64-Größe verfügbar und könnten die Anwendung auf größere/höher aufgelöste Displays vorbereiten.

Apple files several patents for OLED technology
Apple has yet to integrate OLED display technology into any of its products, opting instead for IPS panels and extremely high pixel densities. The company appears to be taking the technology seriously, however, as three of its latest patent applications relate to OLED displays that could be used in smartphones, tablets, computers or televisions.

CIA adds social media functions that nobody asked for to its website
The CIA just revamped its website -- that's right guys -- the CIA has a website. Now you may not spend a ton of time trolling the government's various portals of information but the new and improved CIA website is a veritable treasure trove of data. The CIA isn't immune to the world around it, either, and its refreshed design brings with it a YouTube channel, a Flickr stream (we culled the photo you see above from there), as well as Quick Links for sharing on various social media sites. Now, we can't embed the best video we found on the CIA's YouTube channel (they're not that social yet) but it's called "CIA Overview," and is surely worth your time. Former Lucasfilm CTO Richard Kerris takes over as head of webOS developer relations
HP's having a blowout webOS developer event here in San Francisco to bookend its big product announcements from this morning, and it kicked things off with a personnel announcement -- Richard Kerris is taking over as head of webOS developer relations. Don't recognize the name? Richard was formerly the chief technology officer at Lucasfilm, where he was named one of Variety's "Top 10 innovators to Watch," and before that he was a senior director of developer relations for a little company called Apple. Activision kills Guitar Hero division to the consternation of fake musicians everywhere
Guitar Hero had its time in the sun as one of the most successful franchises in musical gaming. Still, it's been no secret that the once-respected brand, owned by Activision, has experienced pretty steep declines in the past few years, especially on the lackluster Guitar Hero 5. Back in the late 70's Steve Jobs wasn't exactly a household name, but he was important enough to appear on Nightline. HDRSoft has debuted version 2 of its Photomatix Light HDR software, intended to let enthusiast and hobbyist photographers work with either "bracketed" exposures or simple tone-mapping presets to produce high-dynamic-range photos that come closer to revealing all the detail in both light and dark areas that the human eye can perceive. From restoring washed out skies or enhancing details to giving photos a stylized "look," the program is designed to give photographers an introduction to HDR processing and an easy path to upgrading if they need it.

Set AutoImporter's preferences for cameras and iOS devices
When I plugin my SD card, I want one thing to happen: "Get my pictures (and videos) off this card as quickly as possible." I don't necessarily want to import them to iPhoto or do anything else with them right away, I just want them moved from Point A (the SD card) to Point B (a folder on my Mac).
Ideally I would like for each device to have its own folder because I don't want pictures from my iPad (screenshots, saved images from the Internet, etc) mixed in with family vacation pictures from my real camera. Original Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi and Pixi Plus won't get updated to webOS 2.0
We had a chance to sit down with Jon Rubinstein after HP's webOS event today, and he confirmed some unfortunate news for us: older Palm devices like the original Pre, the Pre Plus, the Pixi, and the Pixi Plus won't receive that previously promised update to webOS 2.0. Jon was pretty candid with us, saying that Palm had "missed a product cycle" in the midst of its financial troubles and subsequent acquisition by HP last year, and that the older products simply don't have the horsepower to properly run webOS 2.0 and beyond. Apple may have surprise second 2011 iPad update
Apple may get the edge on rivals by having two iPad updates in one year. Following a purely speculative mention by John Gruber on Wednesday, a separate rumor asserted that the imminent refresh would be followed up by a "big fall surprise" that would be a second model. What it would entail wasn't given to TechCrunch but might be the 2048x1536 display for which prototypes have been circulating but which was thought to be too early for the spring model.

WSJ: Clearwire moving away from retail, will concentrate on network wholesale business
Though it apparently doesn't have any plans in place to close its existing 140 stores around the country, The Wall Street Journal is reporting this evening that network operator Clearwire is halting its direct retail strategy to concentrate on selling the use of its airwaves to other providers -- providers such as Sprint and Comcast, for example, both of which make use of Clearwire's WiMAX network for their own 4G services. Learn to Draw Digital Sketchbook is an pretty interesting app that teaches you how to draw in step-by-step lessons. You select from the provided drawing tools, follow the spoken and text instructions and you're on your way.
You can also dive into the app and draw freehand to apply your skills. You can draw on different types of "paper," and vary the size, pressure and hardness of the drawing tools. Drawings can be saved to your photo library, or emailed to friends. This is the kind of creative use of the iPad that I really commend, and it's nice to see a clever and highly educational approach to learning. One note: The app only runs in portrait mode. Broadcom announces yet another Android-friendly dual-core processor
Broadcom is giving Google a lot of love of late, with the announcement of its second Android-ready processor in as many months hitting us today. The new BCM28150 is a big step up from its predecessor (released in December), and sports a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 at 1.1GHz; an HSPA+ modem doing 21Mbps; and Broadcom's VideoCore IV VPU (vector processing unit). What's more, it touts 12-megapixel camera imaging, 3D video and gaming at 1080p, HDMI out, and the obligatory Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS amenities. Can't seem to get just the right angle when taking a picture with your iPhone? Then you may want to check out Camera Mic, which turns the microphone on your iPhone or on your headset cable into a shutter-release button. Brought to our attention by Lifehacker, Camera Mic snaps a picture any time you tap the microphone -- or possibly even when it hears a loud noise nearby, which of course could lead to a full library of forgettable photos to sort through.

HP's webOS keyboard hands-on
HP confirmed that slick webOS keyboard we saw leaked a while back during its event today, and we got a quick chance to check it out. It's really, really thin -- and the battery compartment is tucked under the curve, so from most angles it looks like it's not even there. Apart from that, it's just a really nice keyboard, albeit one with a webOS function key next to the space bar. No price or availability yet, unfortunately, but we'll keep digging.

Verizon makes first Voice over LTE call, pushes it to 2012
Verizon quickly followed up its plans to use Voice over LTE (VoLTE) with word that it was the first carrier ever to make a phone call with the standard. A call at 9:54AM Eastern on Tuesday with an LG Revolution lasted for just 33 seconds but was followed up by tests to prove simultaneous data and voice would work. Calls lasting over 10 minutes included browsing the web, chatting or downloading apps in the background.

Verizon successfully completes first VoLTE call in the world, plans 2012 availability
Verizon has just announced that it has completed the first voice over LTE (VoLTE) call anywhere in the world today, a 33-second dialogue between employees on LG Revolutions in the company's headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, following it up with a number of other calls where staffers were able to talk and use data services simultaneously -- thanks in no small part to the fact that LTE treats voice just as it treats any other type of data. ThinkGeek's Joystick-It offers a more traditional arcade joystick for your iPad's screen
You've probably seen the Fling, which is TenOne's stick-on joystick for the iPad. Now ThinkGeek has introduced a competitor -- the Joystick-It is another stick-on joystick for the iPad's touchscreen, this time styled a little more closely to an actual arcade controller. The bottom of the stick has what looks like a suction cup that attaches to the device, and then you can move the stick around to control a capacitive widget on the bottom that acts as your finger normally would on the touchscreen.
I haven't gotten to play with it, but I can't imagine that it offers as big a range of movement as the Fling does. Then again, the Fling is more of

If these screens look vaguely familiar, that's because they're essentially the same ones Apple has been using to test the iPhone's various components since day one. Problem is, this is apparently a production Verizon iPhone that was shipped out to an actual customer this week, which well, let's just put it this way: it's not going to help you play Angry Birds any faster.
