T-Mobile sold approximately 540,000 iPhones last quarter
T-Mobile today released its earnings for Q3 2013 and posted sales of 3.6 million smartphones under its T-Mobile brand. Notably, 15% of those sales were iPhone devices, meaning that T-Mobile sold approximately 540,000 iPhones during its most recent quarter.
What's more, the carrier indicated during its earnings conference call that it would have likely sold more iPhones had iPhone 5s supply been more plentiful.
During T-Mobile's Q2 of 2013, the iPhone accounted for approximately 29% of the carrier's smartphone sales.

iPad Air reportedly cheaper to build than previous models
The iPad Air debuted last week to glowing reviews. Thankfully, and in stark contrast to the iPhone 5s, iPad Air supply was reportedly plentiful throughout the weekend.
With Apple's most recent and incredibly thin tablet now out in the wild, the research firm IHS decided to pry one open and take a closer look at the components that make up Apple's flagship iPad.
AllThingsD was able to obtain a copy of IHS' report and relays that the iPad Air, on the whole, is comprised of cheaper components than the third-gen iPad (the most recent iPad model IHS conducted a teardown analysis on).

Everpix goes out of business, subscribers will be refunded
Everpix has announced that after two years, it has closed shop, with the service disappearing by December 15.
It's left those with large photo collections at a loss. Everpix was created with those users in mind, as it was designed to corral a lot of photos into mangeable collections. Everpix designer Wayne Fan told TUAW's Dave Caolo in June that the average customer had uploaded 10,000 photos, and Dave himself said he had 14,000 photos on Everpix. TidBITS Managing Editor Josh Centers said he had uploaded a 70 GB photo collection to the service.

A Look at How GT Advanced Makes Sapphire Glass for Smartphone Displays
Yesterday, the State of Arizona and GT Advanced announced that Apple is building a new 700-employee factory in Arizona to make sapphire glass. Apple will contract with GT Advanced, with that company owning and operating furnaces and related equipment at the facility. Back in April, Pocketnow went to GT Advanced's factory in Massachusetts to find out how sapphire displays are made. It's likely that the facility in Arizona will use a similar process, though we do not yet know what Apple will use the sapphire for. A safe bet would be the company's rumored smart watch product -- many luxury watches use sapphire glass because of its durability.

Backing up your iPhone's text messages
Whether it's for personal or legal reasons, you may want to back up text messages -- both SMS and iMessage. Think about wanting to keep a personal memory of a friend or relative who died suddenly, or the importance of keeping threatening texts from someone, and you'll see why it's important to have a way to do this. As soon as iOS 7 made it into the hands of millions of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users, we began to hear scattered reports of people becoming physically sick when watching the parallax view and zoom in/out animations. Apple quickly responded with a way to turn off the animations to help those who were getting motion sickness, but the fact remains that the animation was very real to some people. Google Search app for iOS gets "OK Google" voice search, more
Google has updated its Google Search app for iOS with several new features and improvements. For starters, users can now use the "OK Google" voice command to conduct hands-free searches via the app. Another major improvement is the addition of Notifications and Reminders, both of which have long since been staples of the Android version of the app. Now the app will present both notifications and reminders to users instead of them having to perform a search calling them up.
Google has also added support for a number of new Cards in the app, including cards for movies, bording passes, car rentals, train warnings, and local events. The updated app also offers a simpler UI and some additional gestures. Here's the full release notes:

Sapphire--it's not just for jewelry anymore. In the last few years, Apple has increased its use of the material in its products, and that trend seems to be on the upswing. Apple to open Arizona manufacturing facility to make sapphire materials
Apple has announced its plans to open a new facility in Arizona to manufacture sapphire materials, according to PocketLint. The Mesa, Ariz., complex will be built and run in partnership with GT Advanced, which is helping Apple manufacture the sapphire. T-Mobile revealed today in its Q3 2013 results that it sold a total of 5.6 million smartphones in the quarter, including 3.6 million under its own brand. 6-Core Version of Apple's New Mac Pro Appears in Benchmarks
While Apple's new Mac Pro doesn't launch until month, the machine continues to occasionally surface in the results database for the popular Geekbench benchmarking tool. Apple updates AirPort Utility utility app for iOS with 64-bit support
Apple has released an update to its AirPort Utility app for iOS. The app allows users to manage their Wi-Fi networks and AirPort base stations right from their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. This version of the app adds 64-bit support for users with an iOS devices with an A7 chip inside, like the iPhone 5s or the new iPad Air.
Though Apple only lists the 64-bit support in the app's release notes, I've noticed that the update also seems to have fixed a number of issues with the previous version of the app where it was dropping connections with devices or would not be able to pick up a device at all.

IHS Suppli has released its estimate of the component costs involved in building the new iPad Air, performing a virtual teardown based on information revealed by Apple and industry knowledge. According to IHS estimates, the component cost of the iPad Air is between $274 and $361 depending on the model, with the base model's components actually totaling $42 less than that of the entry-level third generation iPad last year despite significant technology improvements to reduce size and weight while improving performance. WhatsApp für iOS 7 noch diesen Monat — so sieht es aus
Der stark verbreitete Messenger-Dienst «WhatsApp» soll noch in diesem Monat ein grosses Update erhalten. Die aktualisierte WhatsApp-Version soll primär eine an iOS-7-angepasste Oberfläche mitbringen und ein paar neue Funktionen mit an Bord haben.
Zu den neuen Funktionen gehört zum Besipiel die Möglichkeit, Fotos vor dem verschicken noch leicht zu editieren oder die Unterhaltungen in der iCloud abzuspeichern. Beim neuen Design wurden keine radikalen Änderungen vorgenommen, sondern lediglich das bisherige Design an iOS 7 angepasst — die Benutzerführung und die Oberfläche sind dabei mehrheitlich gleich geblieben.
Wann genau die neue WhatsApp-Version mit dem neuen Design im iOS App Store erhältlich sein wird, ist noch nicht bekannt.

Apple adds Internet-free dictation to Mavericks
There hasn't been any fanfare about this, but if you are using Mavericks, you now have a universal dictation feature that doesn't require an Internet connection.
Dictation made its debut in Mountain Lion and required an Internet connection so your speech could be processed on an Apple server and sent back to you as text. There were limits, and you had to pause to let your data get to Apple and back again. It worked, but it wasn't very effective.
Mavericks users will now find what Apple calls 'enhanced dictation', and if you turn it on you'll need to download about an 800 MB file that makes your speech recognition local rather than server based. No training is needed, once you have the files it works right away, and I found the recognition quick and accurate. As

Apple is famously secretive, but like all companies it has to issue a list of patents to the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) and these provide hints at future upcoming projects. Apple is famous for its patents, they are detailed but often try to disguise product plans in detailed technicality. There are also a lot of patents created to protect Apple’s design, including ones for rounded corners, rectangular products, square icons and double-tapping the screen. Apple baut in den USA eine neue Fabrik
Dokumenten des US-Bundesstaates Arizona zufolge hat Apple in Arizona eine ehemalige Fabrik des Unternehmens «First Solar» erworben. An diesem Standort will Apple künftig Saphir-Kristalle herstellen lassen. Für die Herstellung der Saphir-Kristalle wird Apple mit dem Unternehmen «GT Advanced Technologies» zusammenarbeiten. Apple soll dabei lediglich die Fabrik bauen und das Projekt mit 578 Millionen US-Dollar finanzieren, während die Fabrik von «GT Advanced Technologies» betrieben wird. Apples Partnerunternehmen will die 578 Millionen US-Dollar innerhalb von 5 Jahren zurückzahlen. Unklar ist, ob die Lieferverträge zwischen den beiden Unternehmen noch länger andauern werden.

Apples «Remote»-App erhält iOS-7-Update
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute die Version 4.0 der App «Remote» zum Download freigegeben. Die neue Version der App wurde an das Design von iOS 7 angepasst und unterstützt nun auch das aktuelle iTunes in Version 11.1. Die neue Version von Remote sollen zudem für die neueren iPhones optimiert worden sein. Apple hat grundsätzlich darauf verzichtet, neue Funktionen in die App zu implementieren.
Mit «Remote» kann der Nutzer über das iOS-Gerät Apple TV und iTunes steuern. So hat man beispielsweise Zugriff auf die gesamte freigegebene Musik-Bibliothek.

Unruhe bei BlackBerry: Kein Verkauf und neuer CEO
Der kanadische Smartphone-Hersteller BlackBerry (ehemals RIM) kommt nicht zur Ruhe. Nach knapp zwei Jahren im Amt verlässt der Deutsche Thorsten Heins die Spitze des Unternehmens. Nachfolger von Heins wird der ehemalige Chef des Sofware-Unternehmens Sybase, John S. Chen. In seiner neuen Position wird der Manager für die strategische Ausrichtung des Unternehmens, die Beziehungen zu anderen Unternehmen sowie die organisatorischen Belange der Firma zuständig sein. Chen zieht auch in den Verwaltungsrat von BlackBerry ein.
Zeitgleich hat das Unternehmen auch den Verkauf an den kanadischen Finanzinvestor «Fairfax Financial» abgebrochen. Gerüchten zufolge war der Fonds nicht in der Lage, die benötigten 4.7 Milliarden US-Dollar aufzubringen. Mavericks: Apple bereitet angeblich Updates für iBooks, Safari und Remote Desktop vor
Internen Quellen von Apple zufolge, arbeitet das Unternehmen neben einem Update für die Mail-App momentan mit Hochdruck an weiteren Verbesserungen für OS X Mavericks. Einige Mitarbeiter von Apple sollen in dieser Woche mehrere Updates für OS X Mavericks erhalten haben. Demzufolge wird Apple bereits in absehbarer Zeit die Apps iBooks, Safari und Remote Desktop überarbeiten.

Nike+ Move, First Revealed M7 Corprocessor-Integrated App, Launches in App Store
First announced at Apple's September 10 media event alongside the iPhone 5s and its M7 motion coprocessor, the Nike+ Move app has launched in the App Store, allowing iPhone 5s users to get enhanced statistics daily about their physical activity. The new app was the first revealed to take advantage of the M7 coprocessor and new CoreMotion APIs in iOS 7, allowing it to track more reliable and accurate movement data in the background, even when the phone is asleep, while also conserving battery life. The app then takes all the movement data it gathers and converts it into NikeFuel, the fitness company's measuring unit for physical activities, and uses it to motivate a user to keep exercising.

Last month, Nike announced its new Fuelband SE fitness tracker and an M7-enabled app for the iPhone 5s. You'll have to wait a few days to get your hands on the Fuelband SE as it is slated to start shipping on November 6, but you can download the Nike+ Move app now.
The Nike+ Move app is designed for the iPhone 5s and its M7 motion coprocessor. The app uses your daily motion and translates it into NikeFuel. The app takes a few minutes to setup -- just download, authorize access to the motion data and setup a Nike+ account. Once those three steps are done you are ready to start tracking your steps.

Apple has released Remote 4.0 for iOS. As could be expected, the latest version of Apple's Remote app that lets users control iTunes and Apple TVs from their iOS devices has received a new icon and iOS 7-style makeover.
