Misfit Wearables Shine activity tracker stands out in the crowd
One segment of the iOS accessory market that is extremely popular right now is connected activity trackers. This segment all started with the original Fitbit and Nike FuelBand, and the segment now also includes a family of Fitbits, an entry from Withings, the Jawbone Up and more. Many of the devices either clip onto your belt or are built into a wristband, but the new Misfit Wearables Shine (US$119.95) stands out as a device that not only looks different, but can be worn on your body in a number of ways.
The Shine also stands out in one other unique way; the company that created it was co-founded by a gentleman who should be very familiar to Apple fans -- former CEO John Sculley.

The Rockingham Park Apple Store in Salem, New Hampshire is dramatically expanding its footprint, moving into the former H&M space next door, as noticed by IFOAppleStore. The store is one of the busiest mall-based locations in the chain, largely because of its proximity to Boston and the fact that New Hampshire has zero sales tax, drawing many buyers away from Boston's other Apple Store locations. Photo Blur for iPhone lets you create cool wallpapers
Photo Blur (free) is a clever app that uses your existing pictures to create nice-looking wall paper on your iOS device.
The app is simple to use. Select a photo from your library, or take a picture directly from the app using the iPhone's camera. You'll see a slider that lets you determine the amount of blur, and another one to shift the colors. You can also select a pattern to overlay your image. One pattern is provided, and more require an in-app purchase.

Calculating the difference: a look at calculator accuracy in iOS
Today's date is 11-12-13, so it is only fitting that we spend some time with the iPhone calculator. In an earlier post, we covered some cool calculator tricks. Now, we will take a look at how accurately the iPhone crunches its numbers.
There are a series of simple math tests that can be used to assess the relative accuracy of a calculator. These computations address how many digits a calculator looks at when it does its number crunching and the way it rounds off these numbers. We ran the iPhone 5s with iOS 7, an iPhone 4 with iOS 6 and and iPod Touch with iOS 5 to see how the different iOS versions compare.

iPad soft launches may be the new normal
With today's unannounced retail debut of the iPad mini with Retina display, a whole lot of Apple devotees and critics cried foul. A lot of people seemed confused, simply because an Apple tablet has never launched in such a way. Yes, it's strange for an iPad to launch without a parade in its honor, but it's not unusual for Apple products in general. News: Test shows Retina iPad mini slower than iPad Air
A benchmark test posted at Geekbench reveals the new iPad mini with Retina display is slightly slower than the iPad Air. The new mini clocked in at 1.29 GHz according to a test, about the same speed as the iPhone 5s, which came in at 1.3 GHz. Meanwhile, an iPad Air test showed a 1.39 GHz processor speed. [via 9to5Mac]

iPhone takes top 10 sales slots in Japan
Following up on our report that Apple sales in Japan are on the rise, we're now hearing word the top 10 selling smartphones in the country are all various models of the iPhone.
The data comes courtesy of BCN Rankings which, according to Electronista, ranks the top 10 selling smartphones in the country week by week. If you take a look at the listings, the top selling iPhone model is the 32 GB 5s model, followed by the 16 GB iPhone 5c and the 64 GB 5s.
Also of note is that only two of the top 10 selling iPhones are sold through NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile carrier. Recall that Apple didn't strike an iPh

Apple Now Allowing iOS Developers to Generate 100 Promo Codes Per App Release [iOS Blog]
Apple has recently doubled the number of promo codes that developers receive per app release, according to multiple developers on Twitter. The company is now allowing 100 app download codes to be generated with each app update instead of 50, giving developers more codes to share with friends, family, and press. Each time a developer releases a new app or an app update, they can generate promotional codes that allow users to download an app ahead of release. Generally these codes are provided to press for reviews, and when the generated codes are used up, no additional codes can be obtained until the app is updated. BBC Weather app comes to iPad
Back in June the BBC released its first weather app for iPhone. It got off to rave reviews, but many bemoaned the lack of iPad support. But no longer, as today the BBC has introduced version 1.1 of BBC Weather with full support for the iPad.
In addition to iPad support, the new BBC Weather app also offers a number of additional features including the ability to view weather warnings from the menu page, a new night time ambience mode, and the ability to share forecasts.

Retina iPad Mini Has 1.3 GHz A7 Processor With 5X Better Performance Than Original Mini
Apple's new Retina iPad mini includes the same 64-bit A7 chip used in the iPad Air and the iPhone 5s, which offers significantly better performance than the A5 chip found in the original iPad mini. According to new Geekbench 3 benchmarks, the Retina iPad mini is running at 1.3Ghz, much like the iPhone 5s. Backblaze answers the question "How long do hard drives last?"
Backblaze knows storage. The online backup company uses more than 25,000 spinning hard drives at any one time, stuffed into the proprietary Storage Pods it developed and made an open source design. Well, with that many hard drives working away, the company has been able to keep track of failure rates and Backblaze's Brian Beach wrote a wonderful post on the life cycle of hard drives for the company blog.

Is Samsung Poised to Push Android Past iOS in the Enterprise?
Apple's walled-garden approach to iPhones and iPads -- along with significant enterprise enhancements to its operating system, especially in the latest version iOS 7 -- has been a security nirvana for CIOs. In contrast, Android's open-source environment has been viewed as a breeding ground for malware and risky apps.However, signs now point to a changing of the guard. Samsung, for instance, has become the dominant Android player -- more than 60 percent of the market, according to Localytics -- and has gone on an enterprise offensive with security offerings such as Knox, a containerization technology for Samsung's high-end devices."Many modern Android handsets expose access to a trusted execution engine based on the ARM processor's TrustZone capabilities and this allows app developers to have access to security hardware that is very powerful. Android, Windows Phone grow in smartphone share, while iPhone drops
Android grew to 81% o all smartphones shipped globally in the third quarter, while Apple's iPhones slipped to 12.9% cmpared to 14.4% ayear ago, according to IDC.The latest data from IDC, released Tuesday, also notes that Windows Phone grew to 3.6% mrket share, an increase from 2% ayear ago.Part of Apple's decline in iPhone share can be attributed to not having a large-display smartphone to sell, while nearly all Android manufacturers have a phablet on sale that has a display larger than 5 inches, IDC said. Android's third-quarter market share of 81% ws up from 74.9% ayear ago.Even Nokia, which made up 93.2% o all Windows Phone-powered smartphones shipped in the third quarter, is introducing two new Lumia phones with 6-in. displays. Damages retrial in Apple/Samsung case kicks off today
A jury trial to determine just how much Samsung owes Apple for patent infringement commenced today in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose, California. Recall that a jury initially awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages back in August of 2012 after finding that an array of Samsung smartphones infringed upon Apple design and utility patents.
Following that judgement, it emerged that the jury may have made some errors in calculating the damages amount owed to Apple. As a result, Judge Lucy Koh determined that $450 million of the $1.05 billion judgement needed to be recalculated. And so, a retrial on the matter was set and kicked off today in San Jose. BBC iPlayer Radio gets Playlister support
The BBC has released an updated version of its BBC iPlayer Radio app that adds Playlister support. BBC's Playlister is a new service that allows users to add any song they hear across the BBC's properties to a Playlister playlist. The playlists can then be exported to other music services like Spotify, YouTube and Deezer, where users can listen to the track in full at any time. Once exported, the tracks can be played on the exported music services across all OS's and on all platforms.

Android, Windows Phone Make Major Gains in Q3 2013
Market research firm IDC today released the latest version of its Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, which provides data and insights into smartphone market share and shipments for all of the major mobile platforms. (IDC is a sister company of IDG, CIO.com's publisher.)The most recent numbers are for the third quarter of 2013, and they show impressive gains for Android and Windows Phone. If the above screen is a familiar sight, then you’ll be painfully aware that since Apple updated its iTunes software to version 11.1.3 there have been problems syncing music to an iOS device. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The web is currently awash with people bemoaning the fact they can’t change the music on their iPhone. Indeed, my iPhone 5 was affected by this. Thankfully, after blood, sweat, and a few tears, I managed to find a solution. First, connect your iOS device to iTunes. At the bottom of the Summary page you’ll see a multi-coloured bar. iPhone 5s shipping estimates improve to 1-2 weeks
Good news for those of you who are still waiting to get an iPhone 5s: shipping estimates via Apple's Online Store for the company's flagship iPhone have improved to 1 to 2 weeks, down from 2 to 3 weeks just yesterday. The 1-2 week shipping time includes all models, on all carriers, in all colors, and all capacities in every country in the world--yes, that includes the gold model.
The improved shipping times could mean Apple has successfully ramped up production to meet demand, or that initial demand has been satiated enough--but it's probably a combination of the two. From here on out we can expect shipping time to decrease further as the holiday shopping season approaches.

Customers can initiate screensharing with AppleCare reps via support site
Apple has made a slight --but welcome -- change to how screensharing works when a customer engages with an AppleCare representative. Previously, the rep could initiate a screenshare if that she or he thought it would help resolve the customer's issue more easily. The AppleCare representative would have the customer download a file which would then enable them to share their screen.
Now however, a customer can initiate screen sharing and the AppleCare representative must comply even if they don't believe sharing the screen will help resolve the customer's issue. The screen sharing tool is only available for live telephone calls and cannot be used while chatting with an AppleCare representative via the web.

Android to iPhone trend accelerating
Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) released new data highlighting, among other things, that an increasing number of Android users are making the leap to the iPhone.
AppleInsider was able to access the entirety of the report and relayed a few of the more notable details.
Specifically, CIRP interviewed 400 new iPhone 5s and 5c buyers and found that 20% of surveyed respondents were upgrading from Android devices. In 2012, that number was 16%.

Apple begins collecting Philippine typhoon donations for the American Red Cross
Apple is now offering people the ability to donate directly to the American Red Cross in order to help support the Philippine typhoon disaster relief. The donations are being advertised on Apple's homepage and in iTunes. iTunes users can donate and increments of $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, and $200 in the US iTunes store. Check your local iTunes store for currency amounts there.
100% of every donation will go to the American Red Cross. Apple does note that because it does not share iTunes user data with anyone, people who donate will not get an acknowledgment from the American Red Cross but they will receive an iTunes receipt noting their contribution.

The new iPad many with Retina display is now on sale at Apple's online store. Both the 16 and 32 GB Wi-Fi models have an available to ship date of 1 to 3 business days. The 64 and 128 GB Wi-Fi models and all of the Wi-Fi + Cellular models have an available to ship date of 5 to 10 business days.
The immediate availability of the new Retina iPad minis are something of a shock as Apple gave no indication that they were to go on sale today and has made no announcement regarding their launch. Apples Karten-App wird immer häufiger genutzt
Daten des Marktforschungs-Unternehmens «comScore» zufolge wird Apples hauseigene Karten-App bei den iPhone-Nutzern immer öfters genutzt. Während die Lancierung der Karten-App für Apple zum medialen Desaster wurde, stieg in der Zwischenzeit die Zahl der Nutzer der App stark an.
Im September verwendeten gemäss «comScore» 35 Millionen iPhone-Nutzer in Nordamerika die Karten-App von Apple. Im gleichen Zeitraum sank die Zahl der Google-Maps-Nutzer markant. Während im September 2012 noch über 81 Millionen Nutzer auf die Karten-Dienste von Google zugriffen, waren es im September 2013 noch 58.7 Millionen. Die oben zu lesende Nachricht soll Apple gestern laut diversen Quellen über seine GSX-Seite für Telekomanbieter verbreitet haben. Demnach käme das iPad mini Retina heute in folgenden Ländern raus: USA, Australien, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Neuseeland und Singapur. Neue Renderings von Apples Raumschiff-HQ «Campus 2»
Am Freitag steht die finale Abstimmung im Stadtrat von Cupertino über Apples Bauvorhaben «Campus 2» an. Anfang Oktober hatte bereits die Planungs-Kommission von Apples Heimat-Stadt Cupertino grünes Licht für den Campus 2 gegeben. Mitte Oktober folgte die Annahme des Projektes durch den Stadtrat. Am Freitag nun muss dieser Beschluss des Rates noch einmal bestätigt werden. Anschliessend erhält Apple die definitive Baubewilligung und kann mit den Bauarbeiten beginnen. Der geplante Fertigstellungstermin ist im Jahr 2016.

The online Apple Store is currently down for maintenance or other work, and possibly lending credence to recent rumors that the iPad mini with Retina display may finally be released tomorrow.

AMD vermeldet 100 Millionen verkaufte APUs

Apple today enhanced its Apple Support site with a new option allowing customers to initiate automatic screen sharing when receiving help on a Mac via phone call, giving customers more control over their Apple support experience and facilitating quicker, more accurate responses from support staff. Play-i uses adorable robots to teach children programming, and it might be the future of educational play
This past May we reported about Play-i, a startup by former Google and Apple employees that was seeking to make programmable educational robots for children. The robots would teach children as young as five years old how to code, with a scaling difficulty that would teach kids new programming concepts as they grew older.
