Breitbandausbau würde fast 20 Mrd. Euro kosten
Union und SPD sind sich in ihren Koalitionsverhandlungen einig, dass Milliarden Euro in den Breitbandausbau fließen sollen, um bis 2018 eine flächendeckende Versorgung zu garantieren. Eine Studie des TÜV Rheinland im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Technologie beziffert die Kosten dafür auf etwa 19,5 Mrd. Euro.

iOS 7.0.4 Activity Ramping Up at Apple Ahead of Next Minor Software Update
Apple unsurprisingly appears to be ramping up activity on iOS 7.0.4 as the next version of iOS to see a release to the public, with MacRumors seeing increasing numbers of devices running iOS 7.0.4 from Apple's networks showing up in web logs. Visitors to MacRumors.com via Apple's networks from devices running iOS 7.0.4 The first signs of iOS 7.0.4 appeared on October 22, the same day iOS 7.0.3 was released to the public. Activity has been ramping up over the past two weeks, but there is no word yet on when the update might be released to the public. Tweets we swapped over the weekend show that both of us are amazed with Apple's latest device, which not only boasts significant speed improvements and lighter weight, but also seems to have better battery life.

Apple says missing iWork features will return in the next 6 months
When Apple introduced the new iWork for Mac suite last month, it generated a lot of negative press due to substantial missing features that had been a staple of the old iWork '09 suite. Now Apple says many of the missing features are coming back. In an updated Knowledgebase article called About the new iWork for Mac: Features and compatibility, Apple says:

First Look: Griffin Survivor for iPad Air
In a predictable, but not unappreciated move, Griffin has released Survivor for iPad Air ($80). Like the versions before it, the super heavy duty case combines layers of plastic and thick rubber for a high level of protection, all the way around. This includes full button and port protection, plus a screen protector, and a flip-out camera cover. It's a bulky case, but it should be able to stand up to almost any abuse. The Comet ISON app will help you find and travel along with our space visitor
The comet ISON is currently barreling toward the sun with a close solar encounter due on November 28. It's currently visible in our morning skies, but will become a night-time sight in a few months if it survives the close approach to the sun.
Comets are notoriously unreliable. When Halley's comet returned in 1986 it was pretty much a bust for visual observers. ISON could shine as brightly as the full moon, be a dim asterisk or something in between.

Catalog Spree claims 66% of consumers will shop for holiday gifts from tablets... wait, what?
According to a press release published today from digital magazine company Catalog Spree, 66% of consumers will use a tablet to shop for holiday gifts this year. If that figure strikes you as odd, that's probably because it's not even close to accurate. This is called sampling bias, and it's what happens when a company or group uses a biased sample to generate a favorable figure.
Here is everything Catalog Spree says in the release about how it collected its data: "These findings are part of Catalog Spree's annual holiday shopping survey, which highlights consumer shopping behaviors around the holiday season."

Apple plant eine neue Produktionsstätte in Mesa, im Bundesstaat Arizona, zu bauen. Dies bestätigte der Konzern aus Cupertino. News: Pebble watch receives full iOS 7 notifications
Pebble has announced today that its smart watch “is now fully integrated with iOS 7 and works seamlessly with Notification Center.” All enabled notifications will now be pushed to the Pebble — meaning app notifications beyond calls, emails, and texts. A new iOS app will enable the functionality. Pebble claims the app is currently “under review” by Apple, and will be available in the iTunes Store “soon.”

Analysis: Only one-third of Samsung smartphone sales are of iPhone class
Daniel Eran Dilger at AppleInsider took a look at the numbers reported at Samsung Mobile's investor meeting today and reports that numbers show that the company sold fewer high-end smartphones than Apple this year.
News from the meeting wasn't too upbeat for Samsung Mobile. Dilger notes that the executives chose to focus attention on the company's future plans to accelerate acquisitions to move focus away from lagging sales of high-end smartphones. Since 2010, Samsung has made about 14 acquisitions. Apple has made about the same number of acquisitions in the past year, and Google has made about one acquisition a week since 2010.

iTunes iOS syncing gone? Solve it with Server!
Readers X, Y, and Z are unhappy with Mavericks and iTunes. They write:We recently read that you can't sync your iOS devices' contacts and calendars with iTunes. We are very, very angry. What can be done about this outrage!?I understand and sympathize. Given the ever-greater concerns over privacy it does seem short-sighted to allow only contact and calendar syncing via an online service such as iCloud. I do have a solution. But it costs $20 and it might elicit responses along the lines of "I can't believe you are suggesting that I" followed by a string of obscenities. Huge damage award at stake as Apple, Samsung return to court next week
The battle between Apple and Samsung over smartphone design returns to a Silicon Valley courtroom next week as the companies fight over how much Samsung should pay for infringement of five Apple patents in 13 of its smartphones.It was just over a year ago that a jury in the same court awarded Apple US$1.05 billion in damages after finding infringement of Apple's patents in numerous Samsung smartphones. But Judge Lucy Koh cut about $450 million from the total award and ordered a partial retrial after finding the jury had used an "impermissible legal theory" in determining the amount.The case centers on two types of patents and the jury should have used a different formula in calculating the amount owed to Apple by Samsung for infringement of each type of patent, but it didn't consistently do that, Koh said.She also faulted Apple for misstating the date on which it notified Samsung about the infringement. Fresh off a facelift for its iPhone edition, Instapaper for iPad is now getting its own new coat of paint. The app has been given an updated interface with a new color scheme, disappearing scrollbar, and performance enhancements. Of course that's just the esthetic points.
On the functionality front Instapaper has made a few subtle, but important, improvements. The update brings new sorting and filter functions that allows you to order your article collections by date, length, and popularity. Sometimes when taking a photo, you want to line up the objects in the shot on a perfectly straight plane. Most standalone cameras and even iOS 7's built-in camera app use gridlines to help you line up your shot, but you have to eyeball it to make sure the shot is level. If you want a level line in your camera app, than you should check out LVL Cam.
LVL Cam is a lightweight camera app that adds a level line to the camera interface. The app finds the center of the frame and places a circle right in the center. You must move your phone and tilt it so the level lines up with this center circle. Once you are lined up, you can tap the shutter button to snap a shot with the focus on this center point.

Glympse adds in-flight tracking to its location sharing service
Location sharing app Glympse has added a new feature that'll allow users to track a friend of loved one while they fly. Glympse has partnered with inflight WiFi service Gogo to bring this new Inflight feature to life.

You'll Flip over Doxie's newest scanner
Doxie's been around for a while, selling a series of very portable scanners that were battery powered and used a sheet feeder that you could feed one piece of paper or one photo at a time into. These were fairly nice scanners, but you couldn't use them to do something like scan a book -- at least not without doing something really counterproductive like copying the pages first, then feeding those into the scanner. That's why I think the new Doxie Flip (US$149) is going to be popular. It's a small, battery-powered flatbed scanner that can be used in a variety of ways to scan photos, books, sketches, you name it.

Apple Shuts Down iPad Air and iPhone 5s In-Store Pickup Tracking Site
Several times in recent days, we've mentioned a website called Apple-Tracker.com that was allowing customers to easily monitor in-store Personal Pickup availability of iPhone 5s and iPad Air models. The site offered a much more efficient method of checking for availability than on Apple's online store, showing product availability of all capacities of a given color/connectivity combination at the 20 closest retail store locations to a given zip code on a single screen. In contrast, Apple's online store requires users to select a single color/connectivity/capacity combination, enter a zip code, and then navigate through four pages of availability listings to see all 20 closest stores.

Yahoo! Finance for iOS gets major overhaul
Yahoo has finally gotten around to updating its long-neglected Yahoo! Finance app. The delay has puzzled many, especially since Finance is one of the most well-respected and well-known properties in Yahoo's portfolio. But whatever the reason for the wait, it appears its been worth it.
Remember all the praise Yahoo got for its Weather app? The new Finance app deserves the same recognition. It has received a complete visual makeover worthy of iOS 7 with beautiful new stock charts and portfolio lists. "Der Schreiber" tunkt seine Feder ins Tintenfaß, tropft sie kurz manierlich ab und schreibt dann bis zu 40 Zeichen lange Texte auf Papier. "Programmiert" wird er über einen Satz Metallscheiben im Rücken, die sämtliche Bewegungen steuern. Neben dem Schreiber baute Jaquet-Droz auch noch eine Organistin und einen Zeichner, die nach dem gleichen Prinzip funktionieren.

Apple sends takedown notice to popular iPad and iPhone inventory tracking website
Apple is not happy with Apple-tracker.com, a website that allows you to find iPad and iPhone inventory at local Apple retail stores, and is forcing the service to shut down. According to a note on Apple-tracker.com, Apple sent a DMCA takedown notice claiming the site "scrapes and collects data from apple.com in violation of the apple.com Internet Service Terms of Use."
Site owner Mordy says on the website that he is done. "I'm not really interested in picking a fight with Apple so I guess it time to just say good bye," he writes. Die Analysten von IHS haben in einer neuen Studie den Versuch angetreten, die Produktions-Kosten für das iPad Air zu berechnen. Gemäss den Analysen kostet das iPad Air in der Herstellung je nach Konfiguration zwischen 274 US-Dollar und 361 US-Dollar.Grundsätzlich handelt es sich beim iPad Air um ein iPhone 5s mit einem grösseren Display, wie sich Andrew Rassweiler von IHS ausdrückte. Allerdings hat Apple im Vergleich zum iPad 3 einige einschneidende Veränderungen vorgenommen.
Die grösste Veränderung stellt gemäss Rassweiler nicht das dünnere Gehäuse dar, sondern der verbesserte Bildschirm. In a continuing effort to beef up its app's features in the hope of staving off its rivals like iTunes Radio, Spotify, and Pandora, Rdio has released an update that allows listeners to get personalized music recommendations.
Recommendations work in a way that is similar to Apple's iTunes Genius playlists. Based on a user's listening history, Rdio suggests albums and other stations that are similar to what they've been listening to. The app will also suggest playlists that are popular with a user's friends or that are popular in the area that they're located in. Foxconn testing bigger iPad production ahead of 2014 launch?
Rumours that Apple is working on a bigger iPad have resurfaced this week, thanks to a report from China which suggests Apple could launch a bigger iPad as soon as March. Chinese site PadNews cites sources who have "learned from Foxconn" that Apple is working on a tablet with a 11.4in or 12.9in display that could be ready for release in spring 2014. Manchmal dauert es Jahrzehnte, bis sich eine neue Erfindung wirklich durchsetzt. So war es auch bei der Erfindung des Farbfilms: bereits 1899 hat Edward Turner sein Verfahren patentiert, das mit drei Farbfiltern und Schwarzweissfilm funktioniert. Die Aufnahmen wurden erst 2012 vom britischen National Media Museum gesichtet, restauriert und das erste Mal nach über hundert Jahren wieder sichtbar gemacht. In den Videos nach dem Break wird einerseits das Restaurierungsverfahren gut erklärt und es gibt natürlich den Film selbst zu sehen.

Apple gibt Schweizer Behörden nur zurückhaltend Nutzerinformationen
Apple hat am Dienstag einen Bericht veröffentlicht (PDF), in welchem das Unternehmen mehr oder weniger detailliert zu den Auskunftsbegehren der verschiedenen Regierungen Stellung bezieht.
Gemäss den von Apple veröffentlichten Zahlen haben Schweizer Behörden im ersten Halbjahr 2013 sechs Anfragen an das Unternehmen gestellt, um spezifische Nutzerdaten zu erhalten. Betroffen von den Anfragen waren insgesamt sechs Benutzerkonten. Von diesen sechs Anfragen wurde lediglich in einem Fall die persönlichen Daten des Nutzers offengelegt. Dazu zählen unter anderem Mails, Kreditkarten-Nummern, Telefonnummern, Adressen und andere persönliche Informationen.

Politiker, Schweine und Tröge
Das in Deutschland eingesetzte Maut-System für LKWs basiert auf einer GPS-Protokollierung der gefahrenen mautpflichtigen Strecke. Nicht mit derartigen Geräten ausgestattete Fahrzeuge werden über Mautbrücken erfasst. Diese Mautbrücke, die etwa alle 80 Kilometer postiert ist, erstellt ein Frontalfoto und ein 3D-Modell des Fahrzeugs. Wird anhand der Daten erkannt, dass es sich nicht um eie mautpflichtiges Fahrzeug handelt oder wurde die Maut bezahlt, so werden die Daten gelöscht.

Apple veröffentlicht iTunes 11.1.3
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute ein kleines Update für iTunes zum Download freigegeben. iTunes 11.1.3 behebt gemäss der Download-Beschreibung ein Problem mit dem Equalizer und verbessert die Leistung des Programms bei grossen Mediatheken. Des Weiteren wurden kleinere Fehler behoben.
Apple hat zeitgleich mit der Veröffentlichung von OS X Mavericks iTunes 11.1.2 veröffentlicht. Auch dieses Update beinhaltete Leistungs- und Stabilitätsverbesserungen. In der Update-Beschreibung macht Apple noch einmal darauf aufmerksam, dass bei OS X Mavericks die Bücher nicht mehr in iTunes, sondern in «iBooks für Mac» abgelegt sind.
iTunes 11.1.3 kann ab sofort über den Mac App Store heruntergeladen und installiert werden.

Apple issues report detailing Government Information Requests
Apple today posted a report outlining the number of requests it has received from Government entities seeking information about individual users and/or specific devices. The report reflects all of the information Apple is legally allowed to divulge while specifically noting that they will continue to campaign for the ability to be even more transparent going forward.

Pandora declares iTunes Radio not a threat, investors cheer
When Apple officially unveiled iTunes Radio, it seemed like a bad news for established music streaming services like Pandora, but now that iOS 7 and the new iTunes music feature have had a bit of time to spread, Pandora seems to have weathered the storm with flying colors. Today the company announced that rather than taking a hit in the post-iTunes-Radio world, its overall "hours of listening" metric rose 9% from September to October, and 18% year-over-year. The company also revealed that its overall slice of the U.S. radio pie grew from 7.77% to 8.06% in the span of a month.

Apple releases iTunes 11.1.3 with equalizer and large library performance improvements
Apple has released iTunes 11.1.3 for Mac. The 11.1.3 update doesn't see any new features, but it does fix the annoying bug where the equalizer doesn't always work as expected. It also adds performance improvements when switching views in large iTunes libraries. From the release notes:

Spotify update adds artist touring details, new search features and more
Spotify version 0.9.0 dropped today for iOS and includes a number of welcome updates.

How a PC and Air Video HD turned my iPad into the ultimate entertainment device
I have a problem: There just isn't enough room on my iPad to hold all of my beloved video content. Ideally, I'd love to have all of my favorite movies and TV shows -- which are currently stored on a Windows desktop -- available on my tablet at a moment's notice, but for a long time I didn't think this a reasonable demand. Sure, I know that there are plenty of remote streaming apps out there, but I've always had terrible luck getting them to work. Either they crash every few minutes, horribly downscale my content, or fail to work at all. At some point I just accepted that I'd never live in a world where I could watch all my PC-stored video anywhere in my home via my iPad.
