Apparently Touch ID doesn't like 180-degree unlock attempts
I'm not going to pretend like I discovered this bug after weeks of rigorous testing -- in fact, had I slid my iPhone 5s into my pocket in a different manner I'd never even have known this existed -- but here we are. Despite Apple touting the Touch ID sensor as being able to read prints in any orientation without issue, my phone practically refuses to accept unlock attempts at 180 degrees. But rather than just refusing to unlock, it produces the signature Apple logo and black background that signifies a reboot before returning to the lock screen after about 10 seconds.

Twitter for iOS and Android filters out the pictures, video and people you hate from search results
Twitter has just updated its iOS and Android app with new search filters plus the ability to view all tweets in your results instead of just the top few. Those filters include a new photo search filter that'll display images in either a grid or list, one that just displays the tweets of the people you follow, and even a video filter for all you Vine and YouTube aficionados out there. Additionally, Twitter is introducing a trending timeline in the Discover tab that shows what's the hottest topic of the moment along with related tweets. Apple Gets Tax Break Approval for Arizona Sapphire Glass Facility
The Gilbert Public School Board has approved a tax break for Apple, clearing the way for the company to continue on with its plans to build a 700-employee manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona, reports AZ Central. The school board is reportedly the last of eight government entities needed to approve the deal, which will see Apple's property reclassified as a foreign trade zone.The Gilbert Public Schools' governing board on Monday voted 5-0 in favor of allowing a tax break for Apple Inc., meaning the tech giant can continue with its plans to open a manufacturing plant in Mesa. Iconfactory announces AppViz 3 for tracking App Store success
If you publish an app in Apple's App Store, you know how hard it can be to track your sales with meaningful data. The Iconfactory, partnering with IdeaSwarm, announced its solution to this problem with the launch of AppViz 3 today.

One of the great things about a Swiss Army knife is that it is packed full of helpful tools, yet it still remains easy to use. This combination of simplicity and utility is one of the reasons why I like the Survival GPS app.
The Survival GPS app gives you a bunch of tidbits of data that'll help you get your bearing whether you are in the woods or on a city street. Patentstreit: Verkaufsverbot für ältere Samsung Galaxy-Produkte in den USA

Tis the season to subscribe: What's on my annual service renewal lists
As November rolls around, it's generally time for me to take stock, look at my current service subscriptions (as opposed to entertainment subscriptions like Netflix and Hulu) and weigh what items I'm going to invest in for the next twelves months. Some of my subscriptions are annual choices. They time out after 12 months. Others are ongoing, so a time to evaluate and choose is especially helpful.
Of course, services are a highly personal thing. The ones I subscribe to may or may not meet your needs and vice versa. So I've tried to keep my list of the services I'm considering fairly general and Apple consumer specific. If you have suggestions to add, please drop them in the comments -- and let me know if you run across particular deals that crop up near Black Friday.

MOGA Ace Power controller for iPhone now available
Getting tired of playing games with the controls on your iPhone? There's not an app for that, but there is a new hardware add-on that fits the bill nicely.
The hardware is from MOGA, and it wraps around your iPhone, offering hardware buttons for easy control of games. The device is called the MOGA Ace Controller, and it's designed for the iPhone 5 series of phones, and the 5th generation iPod touch. The controller is attached through the Lightning connector and provides dual analog sticks, action buttons,a d-pad, a headphone jack and L1/R1 and L2/R2 buttons.

Chrome OS 32 beta makes it easier to find the right window
Windowing has been a familiar sight in Chrome OS for a while now, but it hasn't always been easy to find the window you're looking for. US carriers don't want to give smartphone users an anti-theft kill switch

With the release of Find My Friends, all of Apple's major consumer apps have now been updated for iOS 7. Apple's developer apps like iAd Gallery and iTunes Connect still need the iOS 7 treatment. As does Keynote Remote, though that still needs to be updated for the iPhone's 4-inch display too.

Apple TV's continuing expansion rolled on today with the addition of PBS and Yahoo's Screen channel. The streaming box has been steadily adding channels from the likes of Disney and ESPN over the last year.

Sony says PS4 failures have varying causes, affect less than one percent of units

FiftyThree Announces Bluetooth 'Pencil' Stylus to Accompany 'Paper' App [iOS Blog]
FiftyThree, the developer behind the popular Paper sketching app, today released a new stylus called Pencil, which is designed to be used in conjunction with the app. Pencil comes in two varieties, one made from wood and one made from brushed aluminum, and both connect to the iPad via Bluetooth. In addition to a standard stylus tip, Pencil also offers eraser functionality. When connected to Pencil, the Paper app includes palm rejection, allowing a user's palm to rest on the iPad display, and colors can be blended on the screen with fingers. Pairing Pencil with Paper will also unlock tools within the app, which are normally acquired through in-app purchases.

Pencil stylus from the makers of Paper now available
As we reported a while ago, the makers of the awesome iPad app Paper have developed a new stylus called Pencil. In fact, it looks like a jumbo pencil used for construction, but (of course) it is Bluetooth-enabled and does a variety of things when used with Paper.
A clever "kiss to pair" connects the device to your iPad, and unlocks some new features in Paper. The app will ignore your wrist resting on the screen, as one example, something that is a consideration if you're used to tablets like those from Wacom. You can erase with the Pencil (again, like Wacom pens) by flipping it around and using the "eraser" on one end.

Good news for everyone still waiting to get their hands on an iPhone 5s. Shipping estimates for the flagship iPhone have now improved to three to five days on most Apple online stores around the globe. That's down from a one to two-week shipping estimate just last week, and a far cry from the three week estimate that the 5s saw just after launch.

It's sometimes easy to forget, what with all of Google's various ventures and services, that the search giant's impressive revenue stream comes almost entirely from advertising revenue. To that end, Google has an extremely strong interest in keeping tabs on what users are up to online so that they can serve up targeted ads and keep that money train rolling.

Apples Solar-Anlagen produzieren mehr Strom als Datencenter braucht
Katie Fehrenbacher von Gigaom hat sich für einen Bericht die Energieversorgung des Apple Datencenters in Maiden genauer angesehen.
Um das Datencenter in North Carolina mit sauberer Energie versorgen zu können, hat sich Apple im Jahr 2012 entschieden, eine Photovoltaik-Anlage mit einer Leistung von 20 Megawatt zu installieren. Im Verlaufe des Jahres 2012 hat Apple den Bau einer zweiten Anlage in Auftrag gegeben, die ebenfalls 20 Megawatt leistet. Die Panels werden je nach Tageszeit automatisch ausgerichtet, um eine möglichst hohe Energieausbeute erreichen zu können. Allerdings können die Panels nur in eine Richtung ausgerichtet werden. Foxconn: iPhone-5c-Produktionsstop in einer Fabrik
Unbestätigten Gerüchten zufolge hat Apple den Zulieferer Foxconn angewiesen, die Produktionskapazitäten für das iPhone 5c anzupassen. Gemäss den Anweisungen soll im Foxconn-Werk im chinesischen Zhengzhou die Produktion des iPhone 5c eingestellt werden. Daraufhin sollen die freiwerdenden Kapazitäten für die Herstellung des iPhone 5s eingesetzt werden, wie der Branchendienst von mehreren Quellen erfahren haben will. Auf Nachfrage von DigiTimes soll sich weder Foxconn noch Apple zu Wort gemeldet haben.

Experts hired by Apple and Samsung explained and justified their differing damages claims to a California jury Monday as the latest battle between the two smartphone giants moves closer to a conclusion.The two companies have been arguing in front of a jury for four days over the amount of money Samsung should pay to Apple for infringement of five of Apple's patents in 13 models of Samsung smartphones and tablets. Apple wants US$380 million and Samsung is arguing that $52 million is a fairer amount.The question of damages is in front of the court after Judge Lucy Koh ruled a jury miscalculated damages when it considered the matter in a case last year. Apple verteilt erste Beta von iOS 7.1 an Entwickler
Mit der Betaversion von iOS 7.1 verteilt Apple das erste größere Update an registrierte Entwickler. Mit dabei sind Fehlerbehebungen und ein paar neue Features. Schlechter Farbumfang des Retina-Display im iPad Mini
Die Retina-Displays der iPads ab der 3. Generation wurden bisher sehr wegen ihres Farbumfangs gepriesen. Leider scheint sich dieser Trend nicht beim neuen iPad Mini fortzusetzen. Apple verteilt erste Beta von iOS 7.1
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute eine erste Beta von iOS 7.1 zum Download freigegeben. Registrierte Entwickler können sich das Build mit der Kennung «11D5099e» über das Apple Developer Center herunterladen. Gemäss der Update-Beschreibung von Apple behebt iOS 7.1 einige Probleme, die bei Verbindungen mit dem Mobilfunknetz aufgetreten sind. Ebenso hat Apple einige grafische Überarbeitungen vorgenommen.
Die Beta-Tester von iOS 7.1 können beispielsweise in den Einstellungen unter «Bedienungshilfen» neu standardmässiges die dunkle Tastatur auswählen. Ebenso können Nutzer die Gestaltung eines Ordners verändern. Anstelle eines milchigen Hintergrundes ist es mit iOS 7.1 möglich, ein dunkelgraues Fenster einzurichten.

Apple relaxing restrictions on water-damaged iPhones for trade-in program
Apple's Reuse and Recycling program allows customers to quickly trade in their old iPhone for in-store credit when they are buying a new iPhone. Previously the amount a customer could get for their old phone would be impacted by whether or not the phone had water damage. If the iPhone's liquid contact indicator was activated, the iPhone would be worthless (for Apple's trade-in program). Now, however, iPhones with liquid contact indicators that have been activated, but that are still in working order, will still be accepted for the trade-in program.

The new iPad mini's Retina display isn't quite as colorful as it could be
Apple's new baby iPad comes with a pixel-pushing Retina display, but the stat sleuths at AnandTech have now declared that while the screen is indeed a fantastic addition to the smaller iPad, it's a bit colorblind. iOS 7.1 beta released to developers
Apple has released the beta of iOS 7.1 to developers.
iOS 7.1 beta, build 11D5099e, has the usual bug fixes and performance enhancements that come from such a build. But, as 9to5Mac points out, noticeable improvements include the ability to upload burst mode photos to Photo Stream and a dark keyboard option that can be accessed through the Accessibilities settings. Other tweaks include an auto HDR mode for the Camera and tweaked text in Notification Center.

Google to Pay $17 Million Settlement to States in Safari Privacy Circumvention Case
Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia have agreed to a $17 million settlement with Google over the company's circumvention of privacy settings in Safari, reports PCWorld. Google previously agreed to a $22.5 million settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to settle a similar case between the company and the federal government. Google took advantage of a loophole in Safari's privacy settings designed to prevent placement of third-party cookies by default, using invisible web forms to trick Safari into thinking that users had interacted with Google's ads and thus allowing cookies to be placed on the device.

Appeals Court says Judge Lucy Koh erred in not considering injunction against Samsung devices
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Monday found that Judge Lucy Koh erred when she ruled, back in Apple and Samsung's summer of 2012 trial, that infringing Samsung products should not be subject to a permanent injunction.
The appeals court ruled unanimously that U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, Calif., made errors last year when she denied Apple's request for a court injunction against 26 Samsung products.
The court said parts of Judge Koh's ruling against Apple were correct, but it said the judge should spend more time considering evidence offered by the iPhone maker to support arguments that Apple is being irreparably harmed by Samsung'

Samsung's Galaxy Gear has not been selling well, according to a new report from BusinessKorea. First launched in September, the $299 smart watch has been purchased less than 50,000 times and has received largely negative reviews. Daily iPhone App: Pxture will put your photos inside text
Pxture is a very clever free app that does some complex Photoshop-style text effects right on your iPhone. Select a picture from your camera roll, or take a fresh one using the app. Type some text, and the image appears inside the text. All the masking and complex stuff is done for you, and it's a nice effect. The app lets you move the text over the photo, change colors of the text, or you flip the effect so the letters are solid and appear over your photo.
Of course, the app developers will be glad to sell you some additional masks and fonts for US$0.99 each, but I got along fine with what was provided for free. If you wish to explore more effects, the extras may appeal to you.
