American Airlines now offering gate-to-gate electronic device use
Following the announcement by the FAA that restrictions on electronic devices would be lifted for all phases of flight, American Airlines has announced that it will allow all fliers to use their gadgets gate-to-gate, starting today. This should be good news for airline passengers who have been irritated for decades by having to turn all electronic devices off before takeoff and landing -- and let's be honest, that's all of us.
In the company's press release, American Airlines notes that devices will still need to be placed into airplane mode before the plane hits the skies, going on to say that, as always, internet access on WiFi-enabled flights can only be activated once the plane has reached a specific altitude. Apple to Build New 700-Employee Sapphire Glass Manufacturing Plant in Arizona
Apple will build a new 700-employee manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona, to make sapphire glass, according to releases from the State of Arizona and GT Advanced, a New Hampshire-based materials manufacturing company. According to GT Advanced, that company will "own and operate furnaces and related equipment" at a new Apple facility in Mesa, with Apple providing GT with a prepayment of $578 million that GT will pay back over five years beginning in 2015. Although the agreement does not guarantee volumes, it does require GT to maintain a minimum level of capacity. GT will be subject to certain exclusivity terms during the duration of the agreement. AT&T: iPad activations this weekend up more than 200% compared to last year's launch
Perhaps it really will be an "iPad Christmas" for Apple this year. Though Apple hasn't yet released any iPad sales figures for the weekend, AT&T this afternoon issued a press release announcing that iPad activations this past weekend were up 200 percent compared to the fourth-gen iPad launch last year.

Would adding 'Car Mode' to the iPhone prevent texting while driving?
Texting while driving is an insanely dangerous habit that, despite the best efforts of many different groups, shows little sign of slowing. We're already used to having to using our iPhones in "Airplane Mode" when taking to the skies, so would a "Car Mode" be a viable tool for curbing dangerous texting habits? Kernel 3.12 mit verbesserter BTRFS-Unterstützung
Linus Torvalds hat Kernel 3.12 freigegeben. iPad Air manages 24 hours of battery life as LTE hotspot
One of the unsung uses of the iPad is as a personal LTE hotspot. It's rather easy to set up the device as a hotspot for a MacBook if you need to work away from Wi-Fi, although you'll need to keep an eye on your data usage. Last year, Anand Lal Shimpi at Anandtech discovered that an LTE iPad 3 could work as a wireless hotspot for 25.28 hours, downloading data at 50 KB/s. Shimpi repeated his test with the new iPad Air and discovered that even despite having a much smaller battery, the iPad Air can run for 24.08 hours as a hotspot at twice the throughput rate (100 KB/s).

After several leaks hinting at its upcoming release, Apple has pushed an iOS 7-inspired redesign of its Remote app to the App Store. Is there some way to bring it back?It's still there as are all of Calendar's other alert options. It's just that they're not as obvious as they once were. Sales of the iPad Air kicked off this weekend and I, like many others, grabbed one of Apple's latest tablets. Coming from an iPad mini, I couldn't wait to try out the new A7 processor in the full-size tablet. As soon as I unwrapped the device, I picked five of my favorite apps and gave the processor a thorough workout.
Unlike the iPad fourth generation, which got a little warm from my nonstop playing, the iPad Air cruised along without a hitch. Enough of the jabber, here are the first five apps I installed on the iPad Air.

Daily iPhone App: PicSketch turns your photos into sketches
PicSketch is a US$1.99 universal app that takes any photo on your iOS device and turns it into an image that looks like it was sketched. Using the app is a two-click operation. One click lets you select the style of sketch, another click lets you select a color or mono background.
You can explore several of the options, and when satisfied either save the photo or share it. The app gives you 22 pencil sketch styles, 5 sketch effects like B&W and color, and 18 different retro-looking sketch backgrounds.
The app works as advertised, but I never felt the photo itself had the true look of a sketch. Instead, it looks like a photograph that's surrounded by brush strokes. Meanwhile, significantly more expensive applications like Photoshop

Apple is preparing updates to the Mavericks versions of iBooks, Safari, and Remote Desktop, in addition to a Mail.app fix for Gmail users that was revealed last week, according to 9to5Mac. A common refrain heard from Apple critics is that Apple's success has everything to do with marketing and not much at all to do with innovative products. In years past, for instance, they often liked to say that the iPod was just a ho-hum MP3 player that was able to own the market thanks to an assortment of dancing silhouette ads.
In truth, advertising will only take you so far. In the short term, it's a great way to introduce the public to your product, but in the long run, a cash infused marketing campaign touting less than stellar products that consumers don't want is destined to fail.
That being the case, Horace Dediu of Asymco last week posted a chart which really puts Apple's advertising efforts into perspective.

iPad Air quite popular in first weekend of sales
During the debut of iOS 7, OS X Mavericks, and the iPhone 5s and 5c, we regaled TUAW readers with facts and figures on the relative adoption rate of each new Apple product compared to previous products. The numbers came from two sources: Chitika Research and Fiksu. The latter company added an iPad Air tracker to the mix over the past weekend, and although the sales numbers are minuscule compared to overall iPad sales, the iPad Air appears to have an adoption rate almost five times that of the 4th-generation iPad.
Fiksu's numbers, which are based on impressions on its ad network, show the three-day adoption rate for the iPad Air at 0.73 percent of the entire iPad installed base. By comparison, the iPad 4 was only at 0.15 percent of the instal

Deutsche HTC One erhalten Android 4.4 Ende Januar

OS X Mavericks uses ambient light detection on some Macs to delay sleep mode
A cool hidden new feature of OS X Mavericks is that the new OS allows Macs with ambient light sensors to detect user movements and delay sleep mode. The feature was first reported by a Mac developer on Twitter, who incorrectly assumed that at first the iSight camera was tracking a user's movement. However, other Mac devs quickly found, and The Verge confirmed, that it is the ambient light sensor located next to the iSight camera.

Gegen Diskriminierung am Arbeitsplatz: Tim Cook verfasst Kommentar im Wall Street Journal
Überraschend hat sich Apple-CEO Tim Cook in einem Kommentar im Wall Street Journal zu einem politischen Thema geäussert. Im Meinungsartikel mit dem Titel «Gleichberechtigung im Job ist gut für das Business» fordert der Apple-Chef den US-Senat auf, dem «Employment Nondiscrimination Act» zuzustimmen. Die Antidiskriminierungs-Gesetzesvorlage sieht mehr Schutz für sexuell gleichgeschlechtlich orientierte amerikanische Arbeitnehmer vor.
Im Wirtschaftsblatt nennt Cook Gründe, warum sich der Senat für das Gesetz entscheiden soll. Cook habe bereits lange vor seiner Zeit als CEO bei Apple eine «fundamentale Wahrheit» erkannt. J.D. Power explains how Samsung eked out win over the iPad in customer satisfaction survey... kind of
Last week we reported that a J.D. Power tablet satisfaction survey bizarrely gave Samsung the top prize. I say "bizarrely" because if you look at the chart below, Apple's iPad bested Samsung tablets in every single category except for cost. Keep in mind that each category is afforded the same weight.
Also strange is that Samsung managed to attain a 5/5 score in overall satisfaction while failing to receive a 5/5 in any of the metrics used to compute that final score.

iPad Air diary, day 2: Fastest iOS device ever
I'm still working away at the new iPad Air, not to mention loading it up with movies and TV shows for my cross-country flight on Monday. But in the meantime, Jim Galbraith of the Macworld Lab has run some speed tests on the new iPad Air compared to other recent(ish) iOS devices. The results are not shocking, but they're still impressive: The iPad Air is pretty much the fastest iOS device ever.The Geekbench testing app showed the iPad Air to be faster even than the other iOS device running Apple's new A7 processor, the iPhone 5S. (The iPad Air's A7 runs a little faster than the iPhone's, owing to its larger battery and possibly its greater ability to dissipate heat.) And it was almost (but not quite) double the speed of its predecessor model, the fourth-generation iPad. Essentially, in a year Apple has almost doubled the speed of both the iPad and the iPhone. iPad diary day 3: Case closed
Sometimes it takes a while to get used to the iPad. I just finished up a FaceTime call with my mother, who got an iPad mini for Christmas last year. After a couple of months, she was still using her MacBook more than the iPad, and I was concerned that it was just a misbegotten purchase. But today she complained that the only reason she used her laptop anymore was to print, because her printer doesn't support AirPrint.So even someone in their 70s who is as hesitant to embrace technology as my mother can fall under the spell of the iPad, given enough time.As for me, I still use my laptop and iPad in different situations, but I'm much more of a power user than my mother. When Apple introduced the iPhone 5s and 5c during its September media event, the company touted that both devices would be available in over 100 countries by December.

Poll: How well does the iPhone 5s Touch ID work for you?
The iPhone 5s seems to be the best iPhone Apple has ever made, yet after a month of use, it's primary feature -- the Touch ID finger print scanner -- doesn't seem to be all that. To be sure, the Touch ID seems to work reasonably well for a number of users, but there's a growing number of anecdotal reports (including from myself) in Apple's Support Communities that the Touch ID is hit or miss with an increasing number of false-negatives resulting in users having to re-code their fingerprints or even restore their iPhones completely.

Erneut Phishing-Mails mit Apple.ch als Absender im Umlauf
Leser haben uns darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass derzeit Phishing-E-Mails mit dem Absender service@apple.ch im Umlauf sind. Im angeblichen Service-Mail wird um eine Aktualisierung der Apple-ID geben. Würden die Daten nicht über den im Mail eingebetteten Link aktualisiert, werde das Konto gelöscht — so das Betrugsmail. In Wirklichkeit verweist der Link auf «http://revizie.eu/jp», welches wiederum auf eine visuell sehr gut nachgebaute Apple.com-Webseite auf «bestcardhost.com» weiterleitet, auf der die kompletten Adressen- und vor allem Konto bzw. KreditKarten-Informationen angeben werden sollen.
Die Phishing-Mails sind sprachlich nicht einwandfrei (Betreff z.B. «Apple empfehlen: Aktualisierung Ihr Apple ID») und entsprechen auch visuell nicht genau den Apple-Mails (z.B. falsches Logo) — der verlinkten Webseite sieht man visuell jedoch nicht an, dass es sich dabei um eine Fälschung handelt.
Wichtig ist, dass vertrauliche Daten — insbesondere Kreditkarten-Informationen — nie auf

Volksentscheide in Berlin sind eine tolle Sache, sofern man auf der Ja-Seite steht und diese Ja-Seite “gewinnt”. Gewinnt sie nicht, so muss jemand die Schuld haben. Diese Schuldigen waren in der Twitter-Welt schnell gefunden und sehr originell: Die Anderen. In diesem Fall der “faule Wähler”, der nicht hingegangen ist. Der “Idiot”. Und natürlich die CDU-SPD-Koalition, die den Volksentscheid nicht zur Bundestagswahl hat durchführen lassen, sondern einige Wochen nach dieser. Weshalb zu wenige Leute hingegangen sind. Womit sich der Kreis mit den “Idioten” wieder schließt.
Es haben 29,1% der Wahlberechtigten teilgenommen. Davon haben 83% mit “Ja” gestimmt, was 24,1% der Wahlberechtigten entspricht. Verglichen mit dem Volksentscheid zum Berliner Wasser bedeutet dies: Die Wahlbeteiligung war höher. Im Gegensatz zum Wasser-Volksentscheid haben nur weniger Leute mit Ja gestimmt (dort satte 98,2%).

Führender iOS-Entwickler verlässt Apple
Der französische Entwickler Henri Lamiraux hat nach 23 jähriger Tätigkeit für Apple das Unternehmen überraschend verlassen. Gegenüber 9to5Mac bestätigte Lamiraux seinen Abgang beim IT-Konzern. Er habe sich bereits seit längerer Zeit dazu entschlossen, seine Stelle bei Apple aufzugeben und sich pensionieren zu lassen.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Writes Op-Ed in Support of U.S. Employment Nondiscrimination Act
Apple CEO Tim Cook has publicly spoken out in support of the pending Employment Nondiscrimination Act in the form of an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, stating the company's feelings toward the current issue of workplace equality in the United States.
