Durchforstet man die Einstellungsmöglichkeiten des neuen iPod touch 5G, so fällt einem auf, dass eine bekannte Einstellungsmöglichkeit fehlt. Es ist nicht mehr möglich, den iPod die Helligkeit des Bildschirms automatisch an das Umgebungslicht anpassen zu lassen. Auf den ersten Blick verwundert dies, schließlich handelt es sich um ein Feature, das über einen einfachen Umgebungslichtsensor funktioniert.

Panasonic soll LCD-Panels für Apples iPad bauen – Rückzug aus dem TV-Segment

Macheist 4 - Evernote für wenig Geld
Es läuft wieder einmal eine Macheist-Aktion. Für wenig Geld bekommt man einen Haufen Software und je mehr Leute mitmachen, desto mehr Software gibt es. Diesmal dabei: 15 Monate Premium-Account für Evernote. Der Normalpreis: 36 Euro. Für 12 Monate. Das gesamte Macheist-Paket kostet umgerechnet nicht einmal 23 Euro. Alleine mit Evernote kann man folglich grobe 15 Euro sparen und damit einmal in Evernote Premium hineinschnuppern oder einen bestehenden Premium-Account um 15 Monate verlängern.
Ansonsten dabei: Das Vektorgrafikprogramm Artboard, der Schriftstellereditor Scrivener und viele Steam-Spiele, wie Sam & Max und Bejeweled. Für mich hat es sich alleine schon wegen Evernote gelohnt.

Analyst: iPad mini to cannibalize 1M full-size iPad sales
Apple's rumored iPad mini is expected to cannibalize up to one million full-size iPad sales in the fourth quarter, according to a sales projection from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Amazon to push for Kindles in schools
On Wednesday, Amazon announced it was pushing to get its Kindle e-readers and tablet computers into the education sector, a move that will bring it into even stiffer competition with Apple, which has seen some successes in getting schools to look to its iPad as an educational tool. Research: Over one billion smartphones in use
Sometimes it appears that everyone in the world uses a smartphone, and now research by Strategy Analytics covered by Bloomberg shows that in reality, there are over one billion smartphones in use around the world.
The total of 1.038 billion smartphones in use came at the end of the third quarter, meaning that one in every seven individuals on the planet has a smartphone in hand. Strategy Analytics believes that the next billion users will come from emerging markets, and that it will take less than three years to reach the two billion mark.

Carmageddon is an old PC title from the company now called Stainless Games, and earlier this year, they held a Kickstarter to update the game and release it out on iOS. Amazon debuts Whispercast service, lets organizations manage Kindles and Kindle content
Individual Kindle users already have Whispernet, and Amazon has now announced another free service designed to make Kindles easier to manage for large organizations. Dubbed Whispercast, the service will let schools, businesses and other groups both distribute and manage the Kindles themselves and also distribute content to the devices. That includes the ability to control internet access on the devices (blocking the Twitter and Facebook integration, for instance), and the ability to distribute Kindle books and other documents to specific groups or classes. Microsoft: Surface display superior to iPad display
The iPad 3 is known for its gorgeous, high-resolution Retina display, but it is not the best tablet display, said a Microsoft engineer during a Reddit ImaA event on Tuesday. Isis makes October 22nd mobile payment launch official, vows 20 capable phones by year's end

iPad mini: Neue Bilder vom 4:3-Display
Nachdem wir bereits diverse Bilder des vermeintlichen iPad-mini-Gehäuses sehen durften, wurde nun auch das Display vom Ersatzteil-Dienst ETrade Supply abgelichtet. Wie erwartet ist wieder einmal mit einem 4:3-Seitenverhältnis zu rechnen.

Average iOS app is increasing in size
iOS apps, especially games, are growing in size, says a study by ABI Research. According to the study, the average global app size is now 23 MB, up 16 percent from March. Games have shown the biggest weight gain, growing a whopping 42 percent in the last six months. The average game now weighs in at a robust 60 MB.
This increase in size has a profound effect on customers who have iOS devices with 8 GB or 16 GB of internal storage. Customers with these low capacity devices may have to carefully manage their app installs and go through the cumbersome process of deleting older apps in order to install new ones. It may also affect buying trends with users opting to go with the more expensive 32 GB or 64 GB model

iOS-Apps: Durchschnittsgröße in sechs Monaten um 16 Prozent gewachsen
iOS-Apps werden immer größer. Einer Studie zufolge ist die Durchschnittsgröße der Apps von März bis September diesen Jahres um 16 Prozent angestiegen. Bei den Spielen liegt dieser Wert mit 42 Prozent noch höher. “Schuld” daran dürften vor allem zwei Faktoren sein.
Die IT-Marktforscher von ABI Research haben ermittelt, dass die Durchschnitts-App im September 23 Megabyte groß war – im März seien es eben noch 16 Prozent weniger gewesen. Bei Spielen liegt der Wert mit 60 Megabyte wenig überraschend deutlich höher, hier war aber auch der prozentuale Zuwachs deutlich größer.

Microsoft: Surface screen better than iPad Retina display
According to Stevie Bathich, Microsoft's applied sciences department manager, the lower resolution display on the Surface Windows RT tablet is better to read on than the iPads Retina display. There's some goodies in Software Update/the Mac App Store tonight: Apple has released the HP Printer Software Update 2.12, adding support for additional HP printers, and the Java for OS X 2012-006 1.0 update.
The Java update implements a fairly important change in the ongoing transition from Apple's homegrown JVM to the Oracle-provided version: it uninstalls Apple's browser plugin for Java from all browsers. After the update, you'll see "missing plug-in" alerts if you surf to a page with an embedded Java applet. Clicking the alert will take you to Oracle's site to download the replacement plugin. Study: Retina display causes iOS apps to grow by 16 percent
The move to a Retina display in the latest iPad as well as the iPhone and now iPod Touch models has resulted in a noticeable jump in the average size of iOS apps in the last six months, reports ABI Research. Apps have seen an average 16 percent jump in size since March, when the third-generation iPad was unveiled. Games for iOS have grown even more, some 42 percent on average. While Apple anticipated the growth and increase over-the-air download limits to 50MB (up from 20MB previously), the increase cramps storage and bandwidth limits for many users.

iFixit disassembles new iPod Nano; criticizes solder, glue
Technology do-it-yourself repair part suppliers iFixit have completely disassembled the new seventh-generation iPod Nano. Apple promotes Java 6 SE fix through Software Update

Reuters says Insignia Flex Tablet may cost $239 to $259, we'd say it faces stiff odds
Best Buy omitted a handful of details when it unveiled the Insignia Flex Tablet last week, not the least of which is the price that usually sells Insignia-branded gear. A Reuters tipster claims to have filled in that blank: the 9.7-inch, Ice Cream Sandwich-based slate will reportedly cost between $239 to $259 when it ships November 11th. iFixit casts doubt on EPEAT Gold over Retina MacBook
In a caustically worded piece, the CEO of iFixit has decried both the EPEAT environmental certification program and Apple's Retina MacBook Pro in particular, claiming that the former's Gold certification of the latter constitutes "greenwashing," or a form of spin in which deceptive marketing is used to portray a product as environmentally friendly. Judge moves back Apple versus Samsung ITC hearing by 6 days
According to court filings made public today, International Trade Commission Administrative Law Judge Thomas B. Pender moved the investigation of Apple's complaint against Samsung. October 25 is the new date of the investigation, with a final ruling target date four months later, on February 25, 2013. The ITC investigation involves the same list of products that the federal court ruling that awarded Apple $1.05 billion dollars covered.

RED puts barely-used, discounted Scarlet-X cameras on sale
