Briefly: YouMail iOS update, XStylus Touch launched
Following the release of the iPhone 6 and iOS 6, YouMail has launched a new version of its call management app for the iPhone. YouMail now includes in-app, numberless messaging that lets users send voice messages directly to other YouMail users, as well as save voice memos. Voicemail audio downloads have also been optimized, and overall performance and stability has been improved. YouMail Visual Voicemail is available as a free download in the App Store.

FCC promises to act on complaints about AT&T FaceTime rules
The Federal Communications Commission will investigate if a formal complaint is filed against AT&T over its FaceTime restrictions, according to chairman Julius Genachowski. He tells The Verge that if an effort to resolve the problem earlier "doesn't lead to a resolution and a complaint is filed, we [the FCC] will exercise our responsibilities and we will act." AT&T has come under fire for limiting cellular FaceTime calls, a feature built into iOS 6, to costly Mobile Share subscriptions.

Facebook SDK 3.1 for iOS available to developers
Attention all you iOS devs, Facebook has just released its Facebook SDK 3.1 for iOS. Among other things, the SDK allows developers to easily code their apps to allow single sign-on through Facebook IDs. This means that if your app allows users to sign into it via their Facebook account, you no longer have to ask them to enter their Facebook email address and password. One tap in iOS 6 and the user can instantly log in without having to type out a whole bunch of characters on the keyboard.

LaCie upgrades Rugged drive with USB 3.0, Thunderbolt
LaCie has released a new edition of its Rugged external drive, incorporating both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. Three versions are available; a 1TB HDD model is said to have transfer speeds up to 110MBs, while the 120 and 256GB SSD units are capable of hitting 380MBs. MacTech announces Walt Disney Animation Studios tour, filling up fast
Registration is currently underway for the 2012 MacTech Conference here in Los Angeles next month, and MacTech publisher Neil Ticktin has sent along some new information about what's going on at the conference this year, and it sounds amazing. Nexus 7 arrives in Japan, better late than never
Well, it took a while, but Google has finally launched the Nexus 7 in Japan. The tablet made its state-side debut in July, but it took almost three months for it to cross the Pacific and land in the east Asian nation. Pricing is a little higher than what we've seen everywhere else, with the 16GB model selling for ¥19,800, or about $312. It makes a perfect companion for the recently updated Play Books app that also just made its debut in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Apple A6 teardown shows custom, likely expensive CPU layout
A teardown of the A6 processor inside the iPhone 5 suggests that Apple went to extraordinary efforts for processing speed, notes iFixit. The repair outfit has confirmed some basic details, such as the presence of 1GB of RAM, and a dual-core CPU matched by a triple-core GPU. Unusual, though, is that the ARM-based CPU cores appear to have been manually arranged, instead of located based on chip design software.

iFixit opens up the Apple A6
The ambitious folks at iFixit have looked inside Apple's A6 chip. The gang has teamed up with engineering and analysis firm Chipworks to accomplish the feat and play with some very cool toys.
For instance, a bona-fide ion blaster was used to remove individual layers from the chip itself. Also, a scanning capacitance microscope was used to reveal the "doping profiles" of NMOS and PMOS devices within the A6. Isn't science fun?

Report: Sharp increases layoffs number, aiming for profitability by March 2014
Japanese electronics giant Sharp is reportedly planning a major restructuring to bring the company back to profitability by 2014, as reported by Kyodo News. Said restructuring will see Sharp cut nearly 11,000 (10,966) jobs from its 57,170-person workforce by March 2014 -- just under 20 percent of all employees -- and sell off various assets, resulting in ¥213.1 billion ($2.7 billion) of much needed capital from lenders. Comparing the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4S
The iPhone 5 isn't a week old but we're getting a lot of great photo analysis. In particular, Apple touted an upgraded camera, and folks are comparing it to the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S3.
As you might expect, the 5 has a better camera than the 4S, although iMore notes that the 4S shot photos that seemed warmer. Check out their side-by-side comparison shots covering a range of shooting conditions here.
The Galaxy, however, is a big question. As a major competitor, Samsung needs to make sure its cameras are at least on par with Apple's. Unfortunately, as Creativebits discovered, they are not.

Sony's PlayStation 3 getting 'PSN Day 1 Digital' to launch games digitally alongside retail

NYPD says Apple crimes up 40 percent since last year
New York City crimes involving Apple products grew 40 percent year-over-year in the period between January 1st and September 23rd, according to new data from the NYPD. 11,447 Apple-based incidents were reported in the 2012 span, while only 3,280 were recorded for 2011. The growth of Apple-related crimes is 10 times that of the city's general amount, which rose only 4 percent.

How Corning developed the iPhone glass
WIRED has published a compelling look at how Corning created Gorilla Glass, which is used in iPhones. Steve Jobs went to Corning in 2005 and convinced CEO Wendell Weeks that is company could invent a new type of glass within six months. That meeting was related in Walter Isaacson's bio of Jobs, but the story of how Corning did it has not been told.

MIT's real-time indoor mapping system uses Kinect, lasers to aid rescue workers
We've seen the Kinect put to use to help you find your groceries, but the sensor's image processing capabilities have some more safety-minded applications as well. The fine minds at MIT combined the Kinect with a laser range finder and a laptop to create a real-time mapping rig for firefighters and other rescue workers. Woz: Apple Maps flaws "not that severe"
Steve Wozniak, aka Woz, was in Sydney Australia when he noted that, while Apple's Maps were "disappointing," he felt the problem has been blown out of proportion. Of course, Sydney happens to have flyover support, whereas London does not.

RIM unveils BlackBerry 10: new alarm, Peek gesture and more
At today's RIM event, the BlackBerry maker revealed new features in BB10, with CEO Thorsten Heins talking up the OS as "all about getting things done." RIM unveils BB10: new alarm, Peek gesture and more
At today's RIM event, the BlackBerry maker revealed BB1 new features in BB10, with Thorsten Heins saying the OS is "all about getting things done". He demoed a new Peek feature that lets users access the message notifications screen with a right angle gesture. The function can be used in any app: performing the swipe takes users to the BlackBerry Hub where they can view Tweets, messages and other notifications. Well, it's finally here. Sort of. It's been a long and winding road for BlackBerry 10, and as has been RIM's way, the company continues to out new BB10 details just a bit at a time. As you may recall, we got a good look at RIM's original Dev Alpha hardware back in May, and were able to swipe our way through a good bit of BB10 a month later. Limited iPhone 5 numbers blamed on in-cell panel supplies
The reason iPhone 5 stocks are so limited is because of the amount of in-cell touchscreen panels Apple has access to, according to Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes. He estimates that the company has had supplies of just 10 million units for the current quarter, which ends in a matter of days. The difficulty is that Apple registered 2 million preorders in a span of 24 hours, and sold 5 million units over launch weekend, which would leave only a few million phones to cover global demand.

Apple's Lightning connector suppliers struggle to meet demand
With the iPhone 5, Apple introduced the new Lightning connector, effectively retiring the old 30-pin dock connector to the dust pile of the past. However, Lighting cables have been in limited supply and currently have a 2-3 week wait time in Apple's online store.

'Dirty USSD' code could automatically wipe your Samsung TouchWiz device
The Factory Reset. One of those last ditch efforts that many of us have a fair bit of experience with. However, a malicious embed code could potentially do the exact same thing to your Galaxy S III. The Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code (which we won't reproduce here) apparently only works on Samsung phones running Touchwiz, and only if you are directed to the dodgy destination while inside the stock browser (rather than Chrome, for example). Traveling overseas can be a big problem for US iPhone owners, as most of the iPhones sold in the US are locked to Sprint, AT&T, or Verizon. And while those carriers do have data roaming plans, the charges can quickly add up. It's about to become a heck of a lot easier to get your hands on a consumer light-field camera. The Lytro, that marvel of post-picture-taking-focusing, is finally expanding its reach well beyond the confines of its own site. The camera will be hitting Amazon and Best Buy and Target's sites come October 9th. That same day, Canadians will be able to pick the lipstick-shaped device up via Future Shop, followed by retail availability in Canada on the 10th. Apple again updates Remote Desktop for admin, client
Just a week after making an update to Remote Desktop Admin to close a security bug, the company has pushed out 3.6.1 for both the Admin and Client version of Apple Remote Desktop (ARD). The new update fixes a specific Lion issue as well as improves launch speed when long computer lists are present, the reliability of migrated computer lists when upgrading from earlier versions, and offers better handling of remote computers with more than one display. B.E. Technology sues Apple over targeted advertising
Delaware non-practicing entity B.E. Technology has filed suit against Apple in the Tennessee Western District Court in Memphis. B.E. Technology is claiming that Apple is infringing on two patents it holds in regards to targeted advertising. Microsoft extends free Windows Server 2008 support through January 15th, 2015
Now that its successor is available, you're unlikely to hear much excitement for Windows Server 2008 around IT water coolers, but that's not to suggest it'll fade into oblivion anytime soon. With the release of the iPhone 5, a number of previous and new customers are encountering first-hand the new reality of Apple's increased emphasis on better security: it is now much more difficult to reset one's iCloud or Apple ID password than it used to be. Turtle Shell speakers bring Bluetooth-enabled weather-resistant music to bikes, strollers and more
The speakers in the image above are Outdoor Technology's Turtle Shell. Expected to retail for $150, the product is currently in Kickstarter at an early-backer price of $99. To date, it's over a third of the way towards funding, with just under two weeks left to go.
The idea is this: the speakers mount using standard camera threading. They fit on any tripod or on the mounting accessory, which you see just under the speaker itself. Pricing on the mount is still unclear. It does not appear to be bundled with the $99 pledge, but it is with higher pledges.

iCloud: Frühere MobileMe Kunden werden vor Speicherkürzung gewarnt
Seitdem es von Apple die iCloud gibt, wurde der Service von MobileMe aufgelöst. Kunden von MobileMe gingen jedoch nicht leer aus, sondern bekamen für die restliche Laufzeit 25 GB freien iCloud Speicher. Im Normalfall sind nur 5 GB kostenlos verfügbar. Hitachi has developed a prototype storage media, filing information on slivers of quart glass that can endure extreme environmental conditions without degrading. iPhone 5 camera tested in Iceland shows low-light photo comparison to 4S
If you're looking for a real-world comparison of the iPhone 5's camera versus the 4S, check out this series of photos on TREK. Photog Austin Mann took some 5's to Iceland to test them out.
Low-light photos look great and show considerably less noise than the 4S. It's probably not as great at Nokia's upcoming Lumia 920, but we'll wait for Engadget to test the 920 head-to-head.
Mann also tested the iOS 6 panorama feature, noting how fast and easy it is to use.

Mechanical Donkey Kong game tests your barrel-jumping skills, patience
We've seen quite a few NES mods in our day, but we can't say we've ever seen one hooked up to anything quite like this. Built by DIY-er Martin Raynsford, this contraption / work-of-art makes use of an Arduino (naturally) to relay signals from the NES controller to the Donkey Kong screen brought to life above, which was constructed with near pixel-perfect accuracy out of laser-cut parts. Daily iPhone App: Note.S is a simple and impressive daily journal
Yes, there are plenty of notes apps out there, in varying amounts of quality and cost, and odds are that you already have some notes saved up somewhere on your iOS device (for me, it's right there in the official Notes app). But every once in a while, an app comes along that's just so simple and elegant it's worth a look anyway, and that's the strangely named Note.S. This is a really beautiful notes app that's set up as a daily journal, so you can track, from day to day, what you're trying to remember and note on any given day.

Toys R Us in legal showdown with Fuhu over Tabeo tablet
Fuhu, Inc, the manufacturer of the Nabi children's tablet, sued Toys R Us on Monday, claiming that the retailer appropriated trade secrets to facilitate developing it's own Tabeo tablet. The lawsuit filed in San Diego is seeking a sales injunction to prevent Toys R Us from selling the tablet during the holiday season. Fuhu contents that Toys R Us contractually agreed to be the exclusive seller of the Nabi in 2011 solely to learn proprietary technologies prior to creating the Tabeo.

Apple reportedly meeting with Swiss Federal Railway over iOS 6 clock
Remember that iOS 6 clock the Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) said Apple copied from them? It seems they'll be sitting down together soon to discuss an arrangement.

AuthenTec preparing to cut off non-Apple customers in 2013
Fingerprint technology company AuthenTec will be cutting off all of its non-Apple customers starting in 2013, a Korean report says. This includes companies like Samsung, HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Fujitsu. Apple bought out AuthenTec in July, and as is normally the case for the company, the acquisition appears to have been solely to support its own products. AuthenTec clients are allegedly "in a state of panic" about the situation, since they now have to find alternate suppliers for fingerprint scanning.

HeroClix gets a TabApp, combining physical figures with digital gameplay
HeroClix is an official superhero collectible figure game that's been around for a while -- I remember the thing first starting to get popular when I was a kid. Sony announced on Monday that it will introduce a new line of external batteries for smartphones and tablets. Shipping in capacities of 3,500 to 7,000mAh, these external juice boxes weigh around 198 grams and measure 130.6mm by 12.9mm, making them about the size of a modern smartphone. Charging devices via USB, Sony claims that these portable pick me ups can be recharged up to 500 times and can charge most smartphones in an hour and a half.
