TIME: How your phone is changing the world
TIME magazine's cover story for Aug. 27 addresses how phones, specifically smartphones, have revolutionized the world in the past few years. TIME paired with Qualcomm to conduct a mobility poll to see how glued we are to our mobiles; if you think we're addicted to our phones in the U.S., take a look at the numbers for Brazil, India and China. Google enables Play Store delta updates, helps you conserve precious data
At Google's developer conference, the company announced that it would soon offer the ability to download delta updates in its Play Store, and we're starting to see the promise fulfilled before our very eyes. These delta upgrades, which save time and bandwidth when updating larger apps by only downloading the actual changes (rather than the entire program), were spotted earlier by Android Police and verified by our staff. Judge rules Facebook users can share friends' profiles with the feds
It's not the backdoor access that the FBI has been pushing for, but US District Judge William Pauley III has now ruled that it and other law enforcement agencies are entitled to view your Facebook profile if one of your "friends" gives them permission to do so. As GigaOm reports, that ruling comes as part of a New York City racketeering trial, in which one of the accused, Melvin Colon, had tried to suppress evidence turned up on Facebook that led to his indictment. Instagram 3.0, Growl 2.0 SDK go live
Facebook-owned Instagram has released a major update of its app for iOS and Android, v3.0. The biggest addition this time around is the Photo Map, which appears on a person's profile. This lets users browse images by where they were shot, so long as a photo has geotagged information associated with it. Grid and Chronological views are available, and selecting a stack of photos allows navigating through a collection; if the collection is a user's own, images can be deleted.

Mac Blu-ray Player software plays HD movies on your Mac
Want to play a Blu-ray disc on your Mac? Apple doesn't include Blu-ray as an option, but they are readily available through 3rd parties like Amazon or Other World Computing. You'll also need software to play the disc, which is where the Macgo Blu-Ray Player comes in.
I reviewed the Macgo Blu-ray Player software more than a year ago and found it pretty flaky. It dropped frames, was slim on features, and not something I could get to excited about.

Apple wins patents for backlit trackpad, tool gestures
A pair of patents awarded to Apple recently may suggest forthcoming enhancements or new products, though the company often patents items it may not use in products for years, if ever. One such filing, called "Illuminated Touchpad" suggests that Apple may be considering using light effects to illuminate touches in products such as a future version of the Magic Trackpad. The company has also won a patent on a method for bringing up tool options (in, for example, a digital illustration program) using gestures.

Apple submits plans for Prineville, Oregon datacenter
Apple has submitted plans for a new datacenter to the city of Prineville, Oregon, says the Associated Press. The complex will include two buildings with over 500,000 square feet of "data halls;" combined with offices, parking lots and loading docks, the facility should span 107 acres across a 160-acre property. The buildings are notably separate from 10,000-square-foot datacenter Apple is already developing on the Prineville land, which it bought in February.

Daily iPad App: Gasketball horses around on iOS
Gasketball is the latest title from Greg Wohlwend and Mike Boxleiter, better known as Mikengreg. They had a hit on Flash and iOS previously with the great Solipskier, and Greg helped another programmer out quite a bit on a big release called Puzzlejuice.

Sony rules out PS Vita price cut in 2012, works to lower the price later
It's time to get realistic about the prospects of a PlayStation Vita price drop. Apple says reduced retail hours a restructuring gaffe
Reports of layoffs and reduced hours at Apple Stores are misleading, Apple is said to be telling store leaders. Two sources tell Dow Jones that Apple's head of retail, John Browett, sent a memo to the leadership teams explaining that the company recently tried a new staffing formula, with the result that some workers saw their hours cut back, and some outlets were undermanned. The situation lasted a few weeks before the company went back to its old model.

Instagram 3's new Photo Maps feature adds location to your photo stories
Instagram 3.0, the free photo sharing app for iPhone, is available and provides a number of enhancements. The most impressive is the new Photo Maps feature.
By grabbing geolocation information that is saved with each photo, Instagram creates a world map of your images by location. As you zoom in on each location, say Florida for example, you see locations in that state, then in each city.
You can add new photos to your Photo Maps through the new photo upload screen, which features a prominent Add to your Photo Maps button. Instagram has also increased the length of the captions you can add to each photo, and provides a way to name a location.

Square intros flat-rate payment option at $275 per month, hits small business sweet spot
Square is most often pitched as heaven for small businesses, but that 2.75 percent cut per transaction is sometimes a problem for stores that are too successful. Enter a new flat rate option. Shops that don't take more than $250,000 a year in Square payments, or charge more than $400 in a given sale, can instead pay a flat $275 per month regardless of how many swipes they take. Apple retail chiefs refute layoffs, address employees
Apple's new retail chief, John Browett, told leadership teams in Apple Stores that the mothership (not his words) "messed up" (his words). In a rare gaffe, Browett's team apparently tried what Dow Jones Newswires says were new staffing formulas. This led to shifts being cut and general pandemonium among some retail employees (and a lot of bloggers), but no layoffs as some reported.

German Shell rewards program leaks September Nano refresh
A publication for members of Shell Germany's loyalty rewards program has posted a notice warning members of a "delay" if they choose the "old" current-model 8GB iPod nano -- because of an "upcoming re-introduction" of the player, said to be happening sometime next month. TuneCore, CD Baby deal pushes Rdio catalog to over 18M

Google Chrome für iOS
Ende Juni hat Google seinen Chrome-Browser für das iOS vorgestellt, als Universal-App für das iPhone und iPad. Aufgrund der iOS-Einschränkungen handelt es sich dabei letztlich nicht um einen Chrome-Browser, sondern um eine Chrome-Oberfläche, die sich um die Webview legt, die man auch aus etlichen anderen Apps kennt. Kann solch eine Konstruktion dennoch besser als der Safari sein?
Auf OS X hat es Apple mit Lion geschafft, mich von Safari zu Chrome zu bewegen. Auch mit 8GB RAM ist mein Safari derart langsam und verlangt derart viel RAM, dass ich mir lieber 12GB in den Rechner stecken würde. Mit Chrome (und den gleichen Extensions) gibt es dagegen keine Probleme. Mittlerweile verfügt Chrome über eingebaute Sync-Funktionen: Bookmarks, Extensions, Themes und Einstellungen synchronisieren sich leicht holprig zwischen den einzelnen Chrome-Installation meiner drei Macs. iPad mini, other devices could adopt ITO film coating
Apple's rumored mini iPad is expected to use flexible substrates coated with iridium tin oxide (ITO), supplied by a Taiwanese firm, Efun Technology, DigiTimes claims. The site's sources say that the technology has already been used by a number of Samsung devices, thanks to its thin and light nature. Dear Aunt TUAW,
I wish I had never given my Dad that iPad. When he and my Mom were going on a driving trip, I asked if he wanted 3G service. He says "Sure", so I set it up.
Now he's complaining about shelling out $30 a month to AT&T, so I'm telling him to cancel the service. Except he doesn't know what his password is and I think he's putting in the wrong email address (HE ONLY HAS TWO). And he doesn't read my emails explaining all this.
I thought about installing 1Password, but my dad would forget that the application is on the iPad (or his Mac for that matter).

Growl 2.0 SDK available, adds Notification Center integration
Growl has made its 2.0 SDK available, weeks after announcing that it planned to add a Notification Center action display to the program rather than letting it get Sherlocked by OS X Mountain Lion. The SDK also adds improvements to the Mist positioning system and various bugfixes.

Apple calls Dept. of Justice settlement proposal unlawful
Apple is making it known that it will not accept the ebook settlement terms proposed by the Department of Justice, says a report in Paid Content. Under the DOJ's proposal, Apple would have to sever its current contracts and renegotiate new ones with three book publishers - HarperCollins, Hachette and Simon & Schuster. Apple says that this outcome is "fundamentally unfair, unlawful, and unprecedented" and denies the company its right to a fair trial.
This settlement is the result of an investigation into Apple's agency model pricing agreement with book publishers. In this model, publishers are allowed to

Apple's toughest nut yet: Cable operators
This may be Apple's trickiest move in its history. We've all been wondering for a while whether Apple really is working on a next-gen Apple TV that adds "television" (cable, really) to the box. In Walter Issacson's biography of Steve Jobs, the Apple co-founder suggested that the company had "finally cracked" the code of finding what you want to watch -- a clear call out to the horrible interfaces seen on 99% of all DVR's on the planet. But according to the WSJ (article behind paywall), Apple's talks with cable operators haven't yielded any deals yet.

The folks at Bohemian Coding have released Sketch 2.1, with an emphasis on Retina display support. The update required many coding changes and "more than a hundred" graphic updates.

HBO and Fox cut a deal to keep the movies flowing through 2022, HBO Nordic launches soon
Just in case you only thought Amazon, Netflix and Redbox were working the studio deals, HBO announced today it's worked out an extension of its agreement with 20th Century Fox. Already the "premium network home" of Fox flicks for more than 30 years, this deal is long enough to keep it going into the next decade. The LA Times reports from its sources the the original deal would have expired in 2015, while the extension pushes it out to 2022 at a price of over $200 million per year. Report: AppleTV to be used as live television cable box?
According to "sources familiar with the matter," Apple is in discussions with the largest cable operators in the US to allow an Apple device, such as an Apple TV, to be used as a cable box for watching live television and other content. No deals appear to have been made at this time. All of that squabbling over H.264 may be rendered moot in the near future. Natural Motion on track to make $12 million a month with CSR Racing, acquires dev team Boss Alien
NaturalMotion started off working on a state-of-the-art physics system for consoles, but the since company moved to iOS, it's found a lot more monetary success, putting out seven top-grossing games. Now the company has reportedly found a bonafide hit. CSR Racing was released on the App Store on June 28, and NaturalMotion says it's been making $12 million a month since -- all from in-app purchases. To celebrate, NaturalMotion has bought the game's developer, BossAlien and says it's planning on going even bigger with mobile games like this in the future.
Unfortunately, this isn't all good news for players. I haven't sat down to play CSR Racing yet, but

Horn gets a trailer, coming later this month
We already knew that the developers behind the iOS horror game Dark Meadow were working on a new title called Horn, but now here's a trailer to watch. As you can tell, it looks pretty darn good. It's not quite as scary as the first game, though there are a few spooky elements, and the graphics look terrific. The game also looks like it will have a few more story and RPG elements to play with, so it should be fun.

French site Nowhereelse.fr says it has obtained a photo of what may be a flex cable for the upcoming mini iPad. New HBO, Fox deal opens path for simultaneous digital sales
HBO and Fox have renewed a rights agreement originally set to expire in 2015, AllThingsD reports. Under the new deal, Fox movies will continue appearing on HBO until 2022. More importantly, however, Fox and HBO officials say that the agreement includes a "softening" of something known as the electronic sell-through window. Previously HBO maintained a strict policy that while it was running a movie for the first time, no one else could sell or rent a title electronically.
