NASA InSight tapped for Mars drilling mission in 2016
The surface of Mars? Psh been there. With the Curiosity stage well under way, our exploration of the Red Planet is about to take a dive beneath the dust. Hauppage releases the HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition, now with HDMI
Hauppage has released the second version of its "Gaming Edition" Personal Video Recorder, which allows you to record streams of video from a television, gaming console or PC directly on to your Mac. We took a close look at the last version of this device, and it worked well, but completely without the benefit of HDMI. This new version, however, includes an HDMI port, which means you can record video on it at up to 1080p resolution.

Los Angeles' first Mobile Arts Festival shows off photography and art created on iOS devices
Last Saturday I stopped by the first ever Los Angeles Mobile Arts Festival right near where I live in Santa Monica, and took a look at some art and photography created exclusively on mobile devices. Nathaniel Park and his fiance Daria Polichetti put the festival together -- they are also the founders of iPhoneArt.com, and Park told me that the online art gallery "wanted to take this to a real gallery somewhere," and the result is this festival.

Q: Our old computer crashed, but thankfully before that happened we had copied the whole library onto an external hard drive. I now have a new computer, but I’m worried that when I transfer the music onto the new computer, it won’t be connected to my same Apple ID. iPod nano retail shortages hint at September refresh
A number of retailers are running out of stock of the iPod nano, notes 9to5Mac. In the US these include major chains like Amazon, Target, Walmart and Best Buy. Amazon and Target are believed to be out of about half of their Nanos, while Walmart has just a few in stock. Outside of the US, Amazon UK is also seeing stock-outs; some retailers do have plenty of units though, including Apple itself and B&H Photo.

Apple's calendar subscriptions servers unavailable to users
For years Apple has made available their own and third-party calendar subscriptions on their iCal Calendars site. Now Apple has appeared to have taken their iCalendar subscription servers offline. The servers host iCalendar files which anyone with an app that supports the iCalendar (ICS) standard can subscribe to. iCalendar files can be used in popular apps like Calendar on iOS and OS X and Google Calendars. Olympus confirms new high-end Four Thirds DSLR 'currently under study' following vague Facebook post
Visitors to Olympus' UK Facebook page were met with some "BREAKING NEWS!!" on Friday. Apple Stores nearing 300M visitors in FY2012
During its 2012 fiscal year, Apple has seen almost 300 million visitors to its retail stores so far, The Loop says it has learned from a meeting with the company. The Apple fiscal year begins in October. The company also reportedly revealed that it handles about 50,000 Genius Bar appointments every day, scattered across over 370 stores. Over the weekend, the 374th and 375th Apple Stores launched in Canada.

Judge: Google 'failed' to list astroturf writers
In the ongoing dispute between Google and Oracle over patents related to Android's use of Java code, US District Court Judge William Alsup last week ordered both parties to disclose any paid journalists, bloggers, pundits or other writers who may be writing opinion pieces with or without fully disclosing their relationship with the companies -- a practice known as "astro-turfing" since it mimics "grassroots" opinion.

Apple Stores have had 300 million visitors so far in 2012
If you thought those Apple stores were pretty crowded you'd be right. The Loop is reporting Apple has had 300 million visitors to its retail outlets in fiscal year 2012 (which started in October 2011). That's a big number. For comparisons, the total US population is 311 million people.
Here's another daunting number. The Genius Bar services about 50,000 people every day worldwide. That's a lot of customer impressions for Apple to make, and judging by recent satisfaction surveys, most customers feel they are being treated pretty well by Apple

IEEE to introduce new Ethernet speed, up to 1Tb per second
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, otherwise known as the standards body IEEE, are announcing a new standard for the venerable Ethernet networking protocol that will result in speeds between 400 gigabits (four times the current standard) and one terabit per second (ten times the current standard). AKVIS has announced the launch of MakeUp 3.0, the latest release of its tool for automatically smoothing small skin defects in images. The update adds three new retouching tools, Teeth Whitening, Red Eye Removal, and Blue, as well as the option to choose a History Brush mode. A new Preset Preview window is also included that lets users see a quick preview when moving a cursor over a preset. Analyst estimates next iPhone could sell 250 million units
As many as 250 million units could be sold over the course of the next iPhone's lifecycle, according to a forecast by FBR Capital Markets' Craig Berger. The analyst also suggests that sales could push earnings per share up another $50, even though Apple stock is already valued at over $650. Apple suppliers are expected to win big by proxy, including firms like Qualcomm and Fairchild Semiconductor.

Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania offers custom engraved iPads to students
If you're heading back to school, attend the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and need to buy an iPad, you can pick up one with the school's logo engraved on the back.

WhatsApp auf dem iPad nutzen
WhatsApp zählt zu den populärsten Instant Messenger, auch da er für fast jede große mobile Plattform verfügbar ist. So gibt es WhatsApp für iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Symbian und Windows Phone. Nur eine iPad-Version lässt bislang auf sich warten.

A growing number of iOS developers use TestFlight to deliver beta software to testers. Now the company is releasing a beta of its own -- the beta of TestFlight Desktop App.
TestFlight refers to the OS X app as "a significant and much needed change in developers' beta release workflow" and is asking for devs to provide as much feedback as possible. The Desktop App provides four primary functions:

Apple blocks German iBookstore buys with discount cards
Apple is now preventing shoppers at the German iBookstore from using discount iTunes cards to buy books, according to a local report. The ban is said to be a result of pressure from a German bookseller's association, which sent a cease-and-desist letter to Apple last week. German law mandates that a book be offered at the same price throughout the country, something an iTunes discount in theory circumvents, if likely unintentionally. A national supermarket chain, REWE, is informing customers that iTunes cards can't be used to shop at the iBookstore.

Third-party podcast apps return to desktop iTunes search
According to a report in CNET, Apple has restored third-party podcast apps to the desktop version of iTunes. Users who search for a podcast listening app will now retrieve a list of all available apps, not just Apple's official Podcasts app.

iTry 2.0: Das erste Wochenende und seine Eindrücke
Vier Wochen ohne Apple. Vier Wochen ohne iPhone 4 und MacBook Pro. Retina, wohlgemerkt. Kaum ist es da, muss es fürs erste wieder in den Schrank. Der iTry 2.0 verlangt einem armen, gebeutelten GIGA-Mac-Redakteur einiges ab. Aber es macht auch verdammt viel Spaß. Die Eindrücke des ersten Wochenendes kurz zusammengefasst.Zu Beginn war ich einigermaßen entspannt. Hatte kaum Befürchtungen, dass meinem Verständnis von richtig und falsch, schwarz und weiß, von heller und dunkler Seite der Macht etwas passieren könnte. Was kann Android mir schon bieten? DevJuice: PaintCode offers resolution independent design
PaintCode (US$99.99) is a vector drawing app that generates Quartz and Core Graphics Objective-C (and C#/MonoTouch) drawing code.
First released this March, the app was inspired by Apple's introduction of the Retina iPad. It allows developers to create resolution-independent art that adapts to the physical and geometric differences between devices.
It's somewhat similar to Opacity (which I'm told it is no longer under active development), but with tools that specifically target Apple's latest technology. For example, PaintCode includes a Retina preview button that lets you visualize how the art will look on higher-density displays.

Apple and Samsung CEOs in last-minute peace talks
Out of respect to Judge Lucy Koh's request last week that the CEOs of Apple and Samsung try to make peace before their trial goes to a jury, Apple's Tim Cook and Samsung's Kwon Oh Hyun will have a last-chance phone call today, according to Bloomberg.
The results of that phone call are to be reported to Judge Koh later today. Koh said last week that she was "pathologically optimistic" that Samsung and Apple could find a way to come to an agreement over the two-way patent infringement lawsuit before it goes to the jury.

FaceTime over cellular from AT&T will only be available to Mobile Share customers
AT&T announced on Friday that it will offer FaceTime over Cellular at no additional cost to customers who are subscribed to a Mobile Share plan, says a report in Engadget. Apple has released an official statement on reports from hacker Pod2g and others that a serious flaw exists in the SMS protocol that allows spoofing of addresses, meaning that users could receive messages (directing them to websites or phone numbers) that aren't from the party they appear to be from. The CEOs of Apple and Samsung, Tim Cook and Kwon Oh Hyun, are expected to have a phone conversation later today in an attempt to settle their ongoing trial before it goes to jury, according to a Bloomberg source. Lawyers for the two companies are then expected to report to the US District Judge overseeing the case, Lucy Koh. The call would be a fulfillment of a request by Koh late last week that the two executives talk; at the time, the judge said she was "pathologically optimistic" that a settlement could be reached.

Apple responds to SMS issue with iMessage pitch
Last week, Pod2G uncovered a SMS flaw in iOS that lets someone send a spoofed SMS. In this scenario, the SMS would appear to be from a trusted source, but the response would actually be sent to someone else. Engadget reached out to Apple for comment and received a reply that pitches the advantages of iMessage.
Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks. Judge may not make jury aware of Samsung email destruction

Sony reveals Exmor RS camera sensor for smartphones
Sony has formally unveiled it stacked CMOS sensor for smartphones. Last seen in January, the Exmor RS camera modules boast a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor which stacks the pixel layer over the signal ship, shrinking the module's size. The two layers being independent of each other, combined with the pixel layer and analog logic chip not having to compete for space, promises improved image quality compared to previous methods.

Alleged complete front panel for iPhone 5 leaks
A repair site, UBreakiFix, says it has obtained photos of an alleged full front panel assembly for the next-generation iPhone. While front panels have been seen before, the leak represents the first time a complete assembly has been seen, including an LCD. Point of View-Landung des Marsrover Curiosity erstmals in hochauflösenden Bildern
Anders als bei der legendären NASA-Mondlandung in den 1960ern, gab es bei der Marslandung des Rovers Curiosity so gut wie kein Filmmaterial, das medienwirksam in Äther gejagt werden konnte. Daher scheint dieses Video umso interessanter. Erstmals wurden die dort produzierten hochauflösenden Fotografien in einem Clip editiert. Leider wurden nur vier Bilder pro Sekunde geschossen, so dass der Gesamteindruck ein wenig ruckelig erscheint. Dafür gibt es eine beeindruckende Point-Of-View-Ansicht und dank des tollen Internets ist das alles nur einen Klick entfernt.

Mac 101: Battery not charging? Recalibration may be the answer
If your MacBook (any model) is not charging to 100%, it may need to be recalibrated. Apple explains how to do this, but basically it comes down to three steps:
Fully charge your MacBook (and leave it charged for about 2 hours)
Fully drain your MacBook (by using it on battery until it turns off)
Fully recharge your MacBook again.
That should help the battery indicator recalibrate so that it shows the correct information. If it doesn't, you might need to reset the System Management Controller (SMC), but in most case I've found that a simple recalibration will work.

101,46 Meter: Neuer Handyweitwurfweltrekord

Ah Finnland, Land der Wälder, der Melancholie und Schwermütigkeit und des Handyweitwurfs. Wie könnte man die Woche besser beginnen, als über einen neuen Weltrekord in dieser Olympia-verdächtigen Disziplin zu berichten. Ere Karjalainen, gerade 18 Jahre, also im besten Olympioniten-Alter, kam jüngst im schönen Savonlinna auf 101,46 Meter. Womit? Natürlich mit einem Nokia.
Auskenner sagen hier sofort "Moment mal!", denn Chris Hughoff kam bei einer ähnlichen Veranstaltung in Belgien in diesem Jahr bereits auf 102,68 Meter. Dort soll sogar mit Laser gemessen worden sein. Den Finnen ist es egal. Der Sommer ist kurz und Feste muss man feiern wie sie fallen.

AT&T said to discontinue tablet subsidies
As of August 19, AT&T will reportedly no longer subsidize the cost of tablet devices for customers. Canon's brutally designed PowerShot G1 X eschews flowing lines for angular, boxy lines that may only appeal to fans of Le Corbusier and The Smithsons. However, that harsh body covers a camera aiming to bring DSLR performance in the body of a compact.
