Microsoft reportedly blocked datacenter head from Apple work

Microsoft may have blackballed Apple's choice of datacenter head in the moves that ultimately led to Apple hiring from Yahoo, according an unusually detailed rumor. After fighting opposition from his immediate management on his way out, Kevin Timmons was supposedly met by CEO Steve Ballmer, SAI heard. Timmons may have had an "attitude" during the meeting that led to Ballmer reaching Apple directly, threatening legal action if Apple completed the hire.

Popular social music network SoundCloud released its iPad app on Thursday and we took the app for a quick spin. For those that have never used SoundCloud, it's an online service that lets you upload and share audio clips with other SoundCloud members. The clips can be short sound bites, music tracks or even audio books you create yourself. It has a strong social component that lets you promote your tracks or discover new tracks. It launched in 2007 and has rivaled MySpace as a place for musicians to distribute their music and interact with fans. ARMv8 detailed: 64-bit architecture, AppliedMicro first in line

Intel's Xeon E5 processors may have been spoiled in earnest with a detailed listing of every E5-2600 model at CPU-World. Intended for dual-socket computers, they will start off with a quad-core, 1.8GHz Xeon with 10MB of Level 3 cache and no Hyperthreading, but with a $202 price point in bulk. Apple contacting iPhone 4S owners about battery problems

Apple engineers are contacting some iPhone 4S owners to try to solve problems with battery life, says UK newspaper The Guardian. One owner says Apple asked him to install a monitoring program on his phone. Another says he got a call from an engineer who said he had read a forum post, and was "reaching out" to 4S owners for data. Samsung Focus S, Focus Flash reach AT&T Nov. 6 in second try

AT&T on Friday posted launch details for its first two Windows Phone 7.5 devices. Both the Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash will arrive in the carrier's stores on November 6, just a day ahead of a New York City event. Frequent patent attacker Mosaid bought, stops Wi-LAN buyout

A common source of mass patent violation lawsuits, Mosaid, was bought out on Friday by private equity group Sterling Partners. The deal, worth about $590 million Canadian ($594 million US), will see Sterling take on the task of managing 2,000 Nokia patents as well as the others that Mosaid owns. GameStop starts selling Android tablets in stores

GameStop's mobile plans became real Friday after the company started up a tablet test program to sell tablets online and in stores. Android tablets like Acer's Iconia Tab A100, ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer, and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be available in 200 of its stores. Apple's lossless ALAC goes open source, it's like FLAC for iPods

Well, it's not nearly as exciting as a new iPhone, but Apple recently announced a bit of news that will set people in certain circles abuzz. Apple board leader Andrea Jung faces SEC, investor scrutiny

Avon CEO and Apple board co-leader Andrea Jung is coming under fire from both the Securities and Exchange Commission and investors, the Wall Street Journal reports. During a Thursday conference call Avon revealed that it is facing two SEC probes. A source elaborates that the first is concerned with whether or not Avon leaked sensitive data to Citigroup analysts in conversations about company performance. Also allegedly mentioned during the talks were bribery allegations, the subject of the second SEC probe.

Report suggests Apple slipping in handset rankings

Last quarter was a transition quarter for Apple and its iPhone. Sales of the 18-month-old iPhone 4 fell slightly as the company prepared to introduce the iPhone 4S. This slowdown caused Apple to slip to fifth place in the global handset market and to the number two slot in the global smartphone market, according to Strategy Analytics. Taiwan Premier Wu Den-yih asked for an investigation Thursday over the possible harm caused by Apple's slide-to-unlock patent on the phone market. Nielsen starts including e-books in bestseller book charts

Nielsen on Friday broke with traditionalism and said it would start factoring e-books into its charts. Its BookScan metric would now include the Amazon Kindle Store, Apple's iBookstore, Barnes & Noble's Nook store, the Google eBookstore, and other stores would now be counted alongside paper titles. IDC: Apple 5th largest phone maker as ZTE, Samsung rise

Apple gained enough market share to stay one of the top cellphone makers in the world, IDC said Friday. While not as strong as the spring, the iPhone still gained share from year to year and, at 17.07 million, was in fifth place among all cellphones at 4.3 percent. Samsung pulled ahead of Apple by a wide margin to become the top smartphone maker during the summer, Strategy Analytics said. Samsung profit down 23% in summer despite smartphone rush

Samsung's finalized summer results late Thursday showed that its net profit had dropped 23 percent from year-to-year as its chip and display groups offset its smartphone success. Its change lets developers implement and modify the format for both encoding and playback. AMD trotzt Problemen mit positivem dritten Quartal

HP behält PC-Sparte

HP returning to tablets with Windows 8, 'evaluating' webOS

HP during its conference call discussing a decision to keep its PC group dashed hopes of a webOS tablet revival. CEO Meg Whitman wanted HP to compete against the iPad, saying the company needed to "be in the tablet business," but put the hopes for the company's Personal Systems Group strategy back on Microsoft. The company was "certainly going to be there" when Windows 8 shipped sometime next year, she said.
