CMI shows off 720p glasses-free 3D display for smartphones with 2D off-angle viewing
Glasses-free 3D displays for smartphones and tablets aren't exactly anything new, but Chimei Innolux (otherwise known as CMI) has devised a novel twist for its latest 4.3-inch screen. Not only does it boast a high 720p resolution, but it employs a new "cell gap" process that displays a standard 2D image when you view the screen at an off-angle, instead of leaving you with a murky 3D image. The company also promises that the 3D images are brighter with less of a moire effect than other displays, and it's able to work in any orientation. Canalys: HTC nips Apple, Samsung to become top smartphone vendor in US for Q3 2011
Boo! No, that's not your doorbell ringing again, that's HTC popping out of nowhere in order to toss a Nah-nah-nah-boo-boo in the direction of Samsung and Apple. Just days after Strategy Analytics published a global smartphone shipment report for Q3 2011, Canalys -- another formidable name in the sector -- has pushed out a report of its own. Pete Townshend: iTunes a 'vampire,' not helping bands enough
The Who lead Pete Townshend used a presentation at the John Peel Lecture to chastise Apple for not doing enough to support bands. He argued with the AP attending that iTunes "bleeds like a digital vampire" artists whose music it sold but didn't encourage. He suggested that Apple should pay more independent artists directly, rather than favoring distributors, and let artists stream their music instead of one-off downloads. He even proposed Apple take on label-like tasks, such as running talent scouts to find undiscovered bands and promote them itself.

School tech directors expect iPads to increase
A small survey of 25 education technology directors conducted by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster suggests the iPad may become a staple of the classroom in the next three years. Apple will be pleased as it's the iPad and not Android tablets that are attracting the most attention. All the technology directors surveyed are testing or deploying iPads in their schools, but none of them are doing the same with Android.
Those that are using computers in the classroom have one computer for every ten students, but that ratio is expected to improve now that tablets are mainstream. According to those surveyed, 36% of these directors expect to have one tablet for every student and 44%

Nissan Leaf EVs to join NYC taxis, won't make hailing a cab in Manhattan any easier
We've come a long way since Crown Vics crowded the streets of the Big Apple, opting instead for a fleet of hybrid taxis -- but today the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission is taking its green approach one step further with the introduction of six electric Nissan Leaf cabs. Best Buy stores holding little to no iPhone 4S stock
Electronics retailer Best Buy has very little stock of the iPhone 4S remaining, claims RW Baird analyst William Power. "Best Buy was sold out at the vast majority of stores that we checked with, with many stores notifying customers of device shortages in their automatic greetings," he writes. Classic Elite, Interplay titles coming to iOS
Touch Arcade has some good and bad news for fans of classic PC RPGs out there. The bad news is that the expected Elite Collection (which was set to come out last week and round up some of old developer Elite Systems' best games on iOS, has been delayed due to some rights issues. One of the companies involved that had previously agreed to share its games decided instead to claim a trademark at the last minute, which will hold up the process for a while, perhaps only a week or two.

HP's PC group CTO Phil McKinney quits to advise others
HP's PC division faced more repercussions from recent months on Monday as its Personal Systems Group's CTO Phil McKinney said he would be retiring from HP. He planned an active retirement and would be an advisor to others without conflicts of interest or other "corporate restrictions," he said. The exit from HP was on friendly terms, but he wanted to "help innovators get better at innovating."

Hallowe'en costume uses twin iPad 2s to make gaping torso
An ingenious costume idea for Hallowe'en has been shared by YouTube member onemeeliondollars and involves two iPad 2s taped onto the wearer's stomach and back with a FaceTime chat between them. SwitchEasy ships CapsuleRebelX case for iPhone 4, 4S
Accessory maker SwitchEasy has announced a new case for the iPhone 4 and 4S, the CapsuleRebelX. Designwise the case is similar to the basic CapsuleRebel, but with the usual spine-shaped frame replaced by a new "Crossbones" arrangement. In both instances the frame snaps into place on top of a softer inner layer, which wraps around the back and sides of an iPhone while still providing access to buttons, switches and ports.

X-mini KAI Bluetooth speaker daisy chains the jams
The X-mini series of portable speakers may not have changed much in appearance over the years (with a few exceptions), but the company behind them has now finally made one significant upgrade: it's produced a Bluetooth model. As with the other speakers, the new X-mini KAI is a pocket-sized device, and it can be daisy chained with additional speakers for some bigger sound (a standard 3.5mm jack is also included for your non-Bluetooth devices). GDrive test page pops up in Google search, inches closer to an actual product
The GDrive leaks and rumors have started up again in earnest, really for the first time since 2007. Mac Pro line at risk of being canceled, sources claim
Apple is considering axing the Mac Pro after 2011, sources for AppleInsider claim. While the company has allegedly developed an updated Mac Pro, it may or may not be shipped, and Apple management has reportedly been mulling the fate of the computer since at least May. Sales executives at the company are said to agree that the product's days are numbered, largely because both consumer and enterprise sales have dropped so severely that Apple doesn't make much profit from the hardware.

Canalys: HTC overtakes Apple as top smartphone vendor in US
HTC may have beaten Apple to take the top spot among smartphones in the US this summer, Canalys estimated Monday. The Android-first company reportedly delivered 5.7 million smartphones to the country, leaving a wide gap between itself and Apple's 4.6 million iPhones. Samsung also just moved past, knocking Apple to third place after its hardware climbed to 4.9 million.

Apple expenditures to grow on solar project, new campus
Apple's got incredible amounts of money in the bank, as you probably already know. According to recent financial filings, Apple is about to spend a good bit of it. The company will reportedly spend US$8 billion during the next financial year, which is more than twice what it spend during the last 12 months. A full $900 million of that will go straight to its retail stores. Last year, the company (only?) spent $614 million on retail, so that's a nice improvement.
Other areas of spending are a little bit more about company infrastructure, presumably. Apple is moving forward on that brand new "mothership" campus

Amtrak gets Wi-Fi on 12 more East coast train routes
US intercity railway operator Amtrak has once again just expanded the Wi-Fi network it began offering nearly two years ago to travelers. There have been 12 East Coast routes added, with the addition making 60 percent of all Amtrak routes offering Wi-Fi. The company has plans to expand further, upping that total to 75 percent.

Apple has added its New York City outlets to a list of options for in-store pickup of online orders. Going to online checkout with an item now gives shoppers the option of choosing "a store in SF Bay Area or NYC," with a ZIP code check to determine whether an eligible store is nearby. Neuer Overclocking-Weltrekord für den AMD-Bulldozer-Prozessor: 8,46GHz

Das ist an sich ja schon sensationell, einen Chip Bulldozer zu nennen, die Server-Farmen, die AMD damit bespielen will - von den Supercomputern mal ganz abgesehen - werden sich freuen. Es ist der erste Chip mit 16 Kernen auf der x86-Basis, auch wenn das ein wenig geflunkert ist, handelt es sich doch faktisch um eine 8x2-Architektur. Schwamm drüber. Viel wichtiger ist die Nachricht, dass Bulldozer gerade den Weltrekord der Chip-Geschwindigkeit gebrochen hat, schon wieder: 8,46GHz. Das ist 30MHz schneller, als das Ergebnis, das sich AMD bei einer Horde von Experten noch vor wenigen Wochen "eingekauft" hatte, Helium-Kühlung inklusive.

Bill Gates calm on Jobs criticism, takes part credit for Mac
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in an interview with ABC on Sunday downplayed Steve Jobs' criticisms of him as published in Walter Isaacson's Jobs biography. Reacting to Jobs' claims that Gates was "unimaginative" and "weirdly flawed as a human being," Gates thought it was "very understandable" that Jobs felt the way he did. There were points at which the Mac's very existence was in doubt as its relatively high price and one main OEM had to compete against many Windows PC makers, suggesting a lot of pressure as well as a level of give and take in Jobs' views.

Motorola liefert Android 3.2 für das Xoom aus

Brazilian iPad production may be more costly than expected
A Reuters story in the New York Times yesterday noted that iPad producer Foxconn's plans to move iPad production to Brazil may be slowed by higher than expected production costs in the South American country.
Brazil had touted the fact that they had lured Foxconn to the city of Jundiai to build Apple's tablets. This would allow the country to start developing a technological industry similar to that of Korea and Taiwan. However, Brazil has some issues -- a largely unskilled labor pool and poor infrastructure -- that keep it from moving quickly into high-tech.

'Invisible glass' could reduce display glare, fails as food-in-teeth mirror

Foxconn profit drops after tough economy, better-paid staff
Hon Hai Precision Industry, the parent company of Foxconn and the largest contract maker of electronics, has just posted its fourth consecutive drop in profits. Foxconn manufactures multiple electronics devices for companies like Apple, Amazon, Dell, HP, Sony, and numerous others. Third-quarter net income dropped 8.6 percent to $641 million, the company revealed, which is a decrease from the $701 million in the same time period in the previous year.

Apple expenses forecast to hit $8 billion in 2012
Apple is forecasting a 73 percent growth in capital expenditures in its 2012 fiscal year that should bring the tally up to $8 billion, says UBS analyst Maynard Um, who has examined an Apple 10-K filing made public last week. The $3.4 billion jump is believed to be related to its two major upcoming building projects. The first is a solar farm for its Maiden, North Carolina datacenter, while the second is the planned "spaceship" campus in Cupertino, California.

Sony to divide TV division into three-headed monster, looks to bounce back

Using Siri and MailShot Pro to send email to groups
One of the more useful features of Siri on the iPhone 4S is the ability to send email messages by asking Apple's intelligent assistant to do it. Telling Siri to "Email [name or nickname] about [subject]" produces a nicely formatted, but empty Mail message that Siri asks you to complete via dictation. This works fine with sending email to individuals, but what about sending to groups?

MacBook Air: Apple testet 15 Zoll Display
Apple hat Berichten zufolge damit begonnen, ein 15 Zoll-Gerät zu testen, dass demnächst in Produktion gehen könnte. Höchstwahrscheinlich handelt es sich dabei um eine neue Displaygröße des beliebten MacBook Air.
Wie die japanische Webseite Macotakara berichtet, sollen die Tests mit diesem Gerät bereits angelaufen sein. Der Bericht stützt sich auf ein ultradünnes Display, sodass davon auszugehen ist, dass das MacBook Air davon betroffen ist und somit bald eine neue Displaygröße hinzubekommt. Allerdings könnte es auch eine neue Version des MacBook Pro sein, deren Überarbeitung im kommenden Jahr als sehr sicher gilt.

Es ist eines der Lebensbereiche, die Roboter noch nicht umsetzen konnten. Das An- und Ausziehen von Kleidung ist für Menschen ein denkbar einfacher Prozess, eine exakte Motorik auf dem stählernen Freund aufgrund der vielen kleinen Details jedoch gar nicht so einfach. Das Nara Institute for Science And Technology (NAIST) aus Tokyo hat nun genau so einen Roboter präsentiert, der einem Dummy innerhalb von zehn Sekunden ein T-Shirt anziehen kann. Ubuntu Linux to get big push on phones, tablets through 2014
Canonical leader Mark Shuttleworth on Monday vowed that Ubuntu Linux would be getting a much stronger emphasis on mobile in the future. The company would be pushing developers and partners to go beyond the desktop and develop smartphones as well as tablets, TVs, and in-car systems by the time Ubuntu 14.04 arrives in or near April 2014. Wie uns mehrere Leser berichten, gibt es offenbar deutliche Störungen bei iCloud und dem zugehörigen Mail-Dienst, die das Abrufen von Nachrichten verhindern. In seltenen Fällen geht der iCloud-Dienst jedoch für einige Minuten, allerdings in so einem Fall mit deutlich reduzierter Geschwindigkeit. Analysts: HTC's lowered outlook bracing for iPhone 4S impact
HTC's lowered fall outlook may be a sign it expects to take a blow from the iPhone 4S, analysts pointed out Monday. Its expectation that it would only move 12 to 13 million phones, down from 13.2 million, was likely factoring in the effect of a Sprint iPhone on its sales, Baird analyst William Power said. No China Telecom iPhone until 2012, says UBS
A China Telecom iPhone will probably have to wait until 2012, says UBS' Jinjin Wang. The analyst quotes checks with value chain suppliers, which allegedly point to a launch no earlier than February or March of 2012. The phone could come out as late mid-2012, Wang suggests. If so, the timing could mean that there will be no Telecom iPhone until Apple launches a next-generation device, although that would also assume the company plans to return to a summer release schedule.

Acer chairman JT Wang in remarks Monday made an unusual welcome for HP keeping its PC business. Motorola Mobility to drop 800 jobs
Motorola Mobility has issued a regulatory filing outlining the loss of 800 jobs. Disney and its ABC division on Monday recommitted themselves to Internet video Monday with separate deals for Amazon Instant Video and Netflix. Squids is an interesting way of bringing tactical strategy to a very casual kind of game. The game has a nice RPG layer, with turn-based combat and classes of units that you can train and level up while playing. But the "combat" itself is super casual. During fights you essentially pull back and fling your squids around. In a way it feels like the game combines casual gameplay with more tactical thinking. Unfortunately, in practice the game never really succeeds at either.

Rumor has AirPlay Mirroring, iMessage enroute to Mac OS X
An as yet unverified rumor asserts that Apple's "Back to the Mac" philosophy will continue with two more key additions. A 9to5 tip had both AirPlay Mirroring and iMessage in development. Although code references have alluded to iMessage coming to iChat, Apple was supposedly working on both a stand-alone app and an integrated client to determine which was better, possibly the same strategy used for FaceTime.

As we continue our survey of GPS apps for iOS, I have to mention the TeleNav family. The company, which is also behind the AT&T Navigator subscription app, offers a free entry level app that is quite popular with users, even though it is missing some key features.
For free you get turn-by-turn directions, 3D maps, local search that includes gas prices, and one-touch rerouting.

Cablevision reports Q3 earnings, sees profit fall by 65 percent, drop in video subscribers
It's safe to say that Q3 2011 probably won't be remembered as Cablevision's finest. According to the provider's latest earnings report, profits declined by a full 65 percent over the year, with net income plunging to $39.3 million this quarter, compared with the $112.1 million it raked in during the third quarter of 2010. There's plenty I like about Lion - but lots of pointless change for the worse. Top of my hate list is that Spotlight no longer gives me the location of the items I'm searching for. Sure, the preview on cursor hover is nifty, but why oh why can't Spotlight give me (for example) the location of a long-lost document that's become embedded in multiple folders, the way it did in Snow Leopard ?
