Google: 190m Android devices, 40m Google+ users
Google CEO Larry Page revealed during his company's fiscal results call that Android had reached 190 million activated devices worldwide. The figure came several months after reaching 100 million at the start of 2011. No mention was made of the daily activation rate, however, which had last reached 500,000 per day.

Interessante neue Geste zum Verschieben des Cursors: Durch leichtes Fingerwischen nach links oder rechts lässt sich der Cursor in die entsprechende Richtung verschieben, sehr praktisch zum Editieren innerhalb eines Wortes anstelle der stets eigenwilligen Lupe. Skyfire 4.0 boasts 'Pandora-like' recommendations
Skyfire Labs has released iPhone and iPad versions of Skyfire 4.0, an update to its signature web browser. The software copes with a fundamental limitation of iOS by playing converted Flash video from a selection of over 200,000 websites. While the v4.0 update makes the browser compatible with iOS 5, the primary addition is actually a video recommendation system.

Magellan updates RoadMate USA with enhanced maps
The updated version of Magellan RoadMate (2.2) includes new features such as the most current maps available, red light camera and fixed speed camera alerts. The Junction View feature guides users through complicated freeway interchanges.
A premium upgrade via an in-app purchase gives you live camera feeds and warnings about dangerous curves and school zones. You can also purchase additional voices for turn-by-turn directions.

Google, Samsung move Android 4 event to October 19
Google and Samsung together sent Electronista and others an invitation confirming rumors surrounding a rescheduled Android 4.0 event. The two now plan to unveil the OS, nicknamed Ice Cream Sandwich, along with the Galaxy Nexus (possibly called Nexus Prime), on the morning of October 19 in Hong Kong. Ericsson: mobile Internet traffic has doubled in one year
Mobile data traffic has more than doubled in one year, Ericsson found. According to a GigaOM report, the doubling came between the second quarter of 2010 and the same quarter in 2011. Ericsson found than an active smartphone owner uses more than 1MB per day.

iPad mirroring mode on your AppleTV 2: How to do it
One of the least publicized features in iOS 5 is the ability of the iPad 2 (and, apparently, the iPhone 4S) to wirelessly mirror its screen to a second-generation Apple TV. If both your iPad and your Apple TV are fully up-to-date, here's how you activate mirror mode
Don't look for the controls in the Settings app on your iPad. Instead, they are snuggled next to the iPod controls. Double-press your home button to see the multitasking bar, showing all your recent apps. Swipe your finger from right to left; you'll see the Airplay icon. Tap on that, select your Apple TV and toggle the mirror button to 'on'.

Windows 7 becomes first OS more used than XP in 10 years
Windows 7 has become the first OS to be used more than Windows XP in the decade since launch. New data collected by StatCounter has shown Windows 7 just passing XP as of October at a rate that saw it grow just as much as XP declined. The troubled earlier release, Windows Vista, never got more than a quarter of users.

Apple reportedly moves iPad battery orders from Simplo to Dynapack
Digitimes is reporting that due to defective Lithium-polymer battery packs in some iPad 2s, Apple has shifted some orders for the battery packs from Simplo Technology to another producer, Dynapack International Technology.
The defective batteries may have leakage problems. Digitimes notes that these problems can cause short circuits in the batteries, which can cause problems with recharging. Lithium-polymer batteries use very stable chemical materials, so the leakage cannot cause explosion or fire hazards.

Microsoft makes Quanta sign license for Android, Chrome tech
Microsoft continued its patent campaign against Android on Thursday by striking a licensing deal with contract device builder Quanta. New bio piece reveals Scott Forstall's role at Apple
Apple's senior VP for iOS, Scott Forstall, was indirectly responsible for the leak of an iPhone 4 prototype in 2010, a new Businessweek profile suggests. A former Apple manager claims that Forstall persuaded the company's CEO at the time, Steve Jobs, to allow dozens of engineers to carry prototypes so they could do better testing of network performance and reduce dropped calls. It was one of Forstall's engineers who accidentally left an iPhone 4 in a pub, which eventually resulted in a Gizmodo hands-on piece and a high-profile criminal investigation.

iOS 5 iPhones can now shop for alert/text tones
For some of us, the addition of fully customizable SMS/alert tones in iOS 5 is the biggest improvement in the feature list. (Well, maybe not the biggest, but certainly one of the biggest.) Since alerts can be linked directly to contacts for incoming iMessages or SMS receipts, having a larger library of custom sounds means you can personalize your iPhone to deliver more context in less time -- and without having to look at it to know if that text message is from the spouse or the boss.

Retrevo: 24% of BlackBerry owners may buy an iPhone 4S

iFixit tears down an iPhone 4S
iFixit published an early teardown analysis of the iPhone 4S. This initial report suggests the iPhone 4S closely resembles the iPhone 4 on the outside and the inside. The form factor is the same, the pentalobe screws are the same, and even the logic board looks similar to the CDMA iPhone.
Besides the A5 processor, the biggest difference between the 4S and the 4 is the battery, which has an extra .05 WHrs. It also has a slightly different connector which prevents you from taking the 4S battery and popping it in the iPhone 4. Hopefully, iFixit will pry off the logic board's EMI shields and discover what other exciting hardware components lurk underneath.

Nokia intros Luna Bluetooth headset, 603 smartphone with NFC
Nokia put out two NFC-equipped devices on Thursday where the focus was heaviest on the accessory, not the smartphone. The Luna Bluetooth Headset can use NFC when available to automatically pair with a suitably equipped smartphone. Even for iPhones and other non-Nokia hardware, however, it has a unique cradle where owners can answer just by taking out the earpiece and end the call by putting it back in.

iPhone 4S sells out at all three US carriers
All three US iPhone carriers are now sold out of iPhone 4S preorders, Bloomberg observes. Verizon and Sprint currently have no stock of 16GB 4S models; AT&T is giving a delivery window of three to four weeks for the hardware, about the same length of time needed for resupplies. In effect the only option for securing a 4S on launch is to appear at a store in person, especially since there are only two shipping days left in the week.

Endlich: Touchscreen für die Kriegsführung

Das wurde aber auch Zeit. Man kann doch nicht die Armee mit Smartphones in den Krieg schicken, und die Kommando-Zentrale mit altertümlichem Technik-Zeugs abspeisen. Die Armee der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika hat jetzt ein Touchscreen Tablet in recht gigantischer Größe mit der man Truppenbewegungen verfolgen kann, und diverse Kommandos abschicken kann. Leider funktioniert es nicht wie in diesen alten Kriegsfilmen, dass man Truppen einfach per Fingerzeig (oder Roulette-Schieber) verlegen kann. Seltsame Zeiten.

iPhone 4S teardown shows upgraded Qualcomm chip
A still-ongoing teardown of the iPhone 4S has shown that the internal upgrades come from more than just the A5 processor. The now officially dual-mode phone is using a Qualcomm MDM6610, a slight upgrade from the MDM6600 seen in the iPhone 4 just eight months ago. What Qualcomm has done, if anything, with the new model isn't known, but both the old and new chipsets can handle the 14.4Mbps HSPA 3G on carriers like AT&T as well as EVDO Revision A on CDMA networks like Sprint's or Verizon's.

Early problems hamper iCloud, iOS 5 installations
Some people have been encountering serious problems within the first day of using iCloud and iOS 5, complaints indicate. At the moment Apple itself is acknowledging "intermittent slowness" when accessing iCloud, an issue that began around 1:37AM Pacific time but is still ongoing. Of the many new features in iOS 5, some of the most subtle changes came with the Mail app. iCloud now brings a free email account to anyone who wants to snag one, and that email account is accessible from any device -- Apple or not.
First, text can now be formatted using bold, italic, or underlined. To apply formatting to a word or paragraph, select it using a double-tap, and use the handles to extend or shorten the selection if needed. The standard cut/copy/paste/suggest menu will be floating over the word, with an arrow pointing to the right. Schon seit Stunden mehren sich die Beschwerden, dass es zu Mail-Problemen in Verbindung mit iCloud kommt. Auch bei korrekt eingetragenen Passwörtern meldet das Mail-Programm, das Kennwort werde nicht akzeptiert. Dell 'very' in step with Windows 8, disappointed by Android
Dell's founder Michael Dell used his own Dell World conference as an unusual platform for talking down Android while putting faith in Windows 8. While he pledged loyalty to Microsoft and said the company was "very aligned" with it, he said Google's OS had "not developed to the expectations" Dell had. iCloud now features Find My Mac service
Find my iPhone and Find My iPad have been around for awhile via MobileMe, and we've heard dozens of success stories where people used the service to recover lost or stolen iOS devices. Macs have been reliant on third-party solutions or clever hacking to enable the same functionality -- until now.
With iCloud comes Find My Mac, a feature that's essentially identical to what's been offered for iOS devices. RIM hints at BlackBerry owner compensation, doubts switchers
RIM's co-chiefs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie hinted that they might start compensating BlackBerry owners for the just ending outage. Although RIM's focus had been all about fixing the issue, staff were "now turning our attention to" addressing what the customers wanted. In order to sync individual tracks in v10.5 a person has to rely on iTunes' cumbersome checkbox system, which isn't used for filtering tracks by default, and can affect other sync methods when it is on. The v10.5.1 beta introduces a "Manually Added Songs" section to a device's Music tab, which indicates that people can drag tracks from their Library straight to a device.

Report: iOS 5 brings substantial speed gains to iOS devices
Testing done by Geoffrey Goetz at GigaOm has revealed, as expected, that iOS 5 offers significant speed increases on all devices that can run the new operating system version. In particular, JavaScript and overall web performance was markedly better than in previous releases, with Javascript scores (as tested by SunSpider) often showing dramatic gains in speed. The newer the device, the more likely it would achieve noticeable gains in the testing.

WSJ: Apple negotiating for streaming movies on iTunes Store
The Wall Street Journal suggests that Apple and major film studios are currently negotiating for the right to offer streaming movies from the iTunes Store. According to "people familiar with the matter," the deal would allow users to stream movies they've bought from iTunes to portable devices like iPhones and iPads without having to use a Mac or PC to transfer them over first.

British broadcaster ITV makes the move to Mac
Another major company has made the switch to the Mac. This time it's British broadcaster ITV, which is currently in the middle of a five-year technology transition. The company will switch out its employees' PCs with Macs and include Google Apps in the deal, installing Google's software on hardware for 7,000 different employees in the system. Not all of the company's employees will get Macs, as apparently different roles may still need PCs for certain types of software (Boot Camp, anyone?). Still, given the choice, I think plenty of the employees will probably elect to go Mac if they can.

RIM starts restoring BlackBerry service after nearly 4 days
RIM's CIO Robin Bienfait posted an update late Wednesday letting BlackBerry users know that BlackBerry Internet service should be gradually coming back following its massive outage. E-mail was working in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, with backed up messages still being cleared. BlackBerry Messenger was up and working smoothly outside of a trio of Latin American carriers, where web browsing was also a problem.

Apple wins early ban on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia
Apple scored a key victory late Wednesday after Australia's Federal Court granted it its desire for a preliminary ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country. The ruling will keep the Android tablet off of the market in the country unless Samsung wins in a trial. Samsung had offered a deal to try to keep the Tab 10.1 on shelves but had been rejected as they were only software changes, not some of the design traits Apple considers too similar to the iPad.

Samsung attempts to ambush iPhone 4S launch in Sydney
Samsung has set up a temporary shop in Sydney, right across from the local Apple Store, and started hawking Galaxy S2 phones for the low, low price of two bucks (with a two-year contract, naturally). The line for the bargain-basement priced phone was reportedly longer than the nearby line for the iPhone 4S. That's not a huge surprise; people do love a bargain, and a two dollar smartphone certainly looks like one.

So, get this. We were cruising through the halls of Pepcom's Mobile Focus with a horrible fever and on the brink of delirium. Unsure how much longer we could keep composure, we came upon Navigon's booth. Apple removes DigiNotar root certificates from iOS 5
Security notes on Apple's update to iOS 5, rolled out earlier today, show that the company has addressed some 95 security vulnerabilities affecting a wide range of iOS components, notably WebKit as well as the kernel itself. The new version also supports revisions of the TLS protocol, eliminates support for the compromised MD5 algorithm, and notably removes DigiNotar root certificates from its trusted root list. The latter company admitted to being compromised in August, according to security blog ThreatPost.

RIM recovers, BlackBerry services coming back online
Well, that was quick. Mere hours after holding a press conference stating that it didn't know when BlackBerry users would have their BBM, internet, and email working again, services have begun to come back online. Apparently email is up across the globe, as is BBM. Web browsing, however continues to be unavailable to those in Europe, the Middle East, India, and Africa as are EMEIA service providers in Latin America. IPhone 4 theft suspects plead no contest, get wrists slapped

IDC more cautious on Apple gains, sees Lenovo push out Acer
IDC early estimates showed a major shakeup underway in the US PC market headed by Apple. While not as aggressive as Gartner, it saw Apple being the only top computer maker outside of HP to gain share, growing nearly a point to hit 11.3 percent this summer. Toshiba was also reversing its years of gains and was down to exactly eight percent, giving Apple a comfortable third place.

Geht es Ihnen genauso? Eine Beta-Version von iOS 5 auf dem iPhone, und die Software-Aktualisierung sowie iTunes sagt, dass man bereits die neuste Version installiert hat?
Wie soll man also vorgehen, um die Final-Version von iOS 5 auf sein iOS-Device zu bekommen?
Eine Lösung wäre, die .ipsw-Dateien manuell zu laden, und dann via [alt] und Linker-Maustaste auf Wiederherstellen in iTunes zu klicken, und dann die Update-Datei von Hand auszuwählen.

Fake 'Flash installer' Trojan tries to obtain personal info
Another malware installer for OS X has appeared, this time a variation on one spotted several weeks ago that masquerades as an installer for Adobe Flash, with the ultimate goal of stealing personal information from browsers and sending it to remote servers. While the latest version has several dead giveaways for savvy users, non-technical Mac users should be wary of any Adobe Flash "updater" they did not personally download from Adobe's own servers.

O2 Connect brings free VoIP calls to Android, iPhone owners
UK carrier O2 today announced it plans to trial a VoIP service for its mobile phone customers. Called O2 Connect, the Skype-like service will allow smartphone users to use voice and text services over a Wi-Fi network from their mobile device, and call or send a message to any UK mobile or landline number. The app initially will be available on iOS devices and Android smartphones.

iOS 5 features: Twitter integration
One of the new features in iOS 5 that I'm using all the time, but didn't expect to, is the new Twitter integration into Photos, Safari, YouTube and Maps.
Setting up your Twitter account is pretty easy. Go into your iDevice's settings and log into Twitter. Multiple accounts are supported. When you take a photo, you get an extra option to tweet it from the Photos app. Clicking the tweet button brings up a new tweet with a thumbnail of the image you're about to send. Apple posts Aperture 3.2, Xcode 4.2, new iOS 5 and Lion SDKs
Continuing a day-long flood of software updates, Apple has released Aperture 3.2 and Xcode 4.2. As expected, the Aperture patch concentrates on compatibility with iCloud and iOS 5. Some other small enhancements have been made though, such as pinch-to-zoom automatically activating Zoom mode, and automatic launch in fullscreen mode if that was in use when the program was last quit. The Import window has gained an option to delete photos from iPhones and iPads after the images have been copied over.

iOS 5 features: Split keyboard for iPad
Laying the iPad flat in landscape orientation makes typing on its touchscreen relatively easy once you get used to it, but what about typing when you're holding it in your hands? If you've got hands like a basketball player, thumb-typing on the iPad in portrait orientation probably hasn't been a problem for you so far. For the rest of us, we were hoping for a better solution. In iOS 5, that solution is here: Apple calls it the split keyboard, and it's pretty awesome.
The old button to show/hide the keyboard has gained a few more options. Tapping and holding the button will bring up options to Undock or Split the keyboard, as shown below.

RIM: BlackBerry outage wasn't a hack, has no known end date
RIM during an emergency conference call to discuss its rapidly worsening BlackBerry outage provided only some extra detail as to the nature of the issue. Along with acknowledging the messaging backlog, software CTO David Yach said there was no sign of a hack causing the problem. He was adamant that the company had been properly testing its backups and that the failure caught it by surprise.
