Boxee updates iPad app to version 1.2, adds global Spotify support
It's only been a couple of months since Boxee unleashed its much anticipated iPad app, but the company has already come out with that much needed update to version 1.2. With the upgrade, users will be able to navigate across content sent to their Boxee Boxes using a remote control interface that's now located at the bottom right corner of the app. iPad owners can also pause video sent to their Box and pick up later where they left off, using the Boxee

AMD reports $1.69 billion in revenue for Q3, net income of $97 million
Things were starting to look pretty bleak in Q2 for AMD, but Q3 is an entirely different story. The company reported a revenue of $1.69 billion, up 7-percent from last quarter. More importantly, net income climbed to $97 million, up from just $61 million in Q2 and a far cry from the $118 million loss posted this time last year. Even the the graphics division had good news to share. After the former ATI ran at an operating loss of $7 million last quarter, it netted $12 million in operating income in Q2. iCloud calendars failing to appear in Google Calendar
People are still finding themselves unable to access iCloud calendars through Google Calendar, complaints indicate. Users should be able to share iCloud calendars through a URL; trying to open the link with Google Calendar's "Add by URL" function, however, currently generates an error message: "Could not fetch the url because robots.txt prevents us from crawling the url." Apple has allegedly been aware of the problem since at least October 17th.

Redbox's $1 per night DVD rentals jump to $1.20 October 31st, Blu-ray and games stay the same
While its movie rental rivals Netflix and Blockbuster have struggled for varying reasons recently, it seemed like Redbox could be just the ticket for thrifty renters. That may be a little tougher now that it has announced Monday we'll see a slight increase in pricing for DVD rentals, from $1 to $1.20. So far, nightly pricing for Blu-ray discs ($1.50) and videogames ($2) is staying the same, but with studios already pushing for longer rental delays, there's fewer safe ports or those pursuing cheap, current movies. Vorratsdaten: EU-Verfahren gegen Deutschland

UK stores: price-cut BlackBerry PlayBook still not selling
Steep BlackBerry PlayBook price cuts may not have had much effect in the UK, according to unofficial stories from local retailers. They claimed that sales had been given a "slight uplift," The Register said, but that results were still "disappointing." The nearly four-day BlackBerry outage was a partial factor, as it rattled confidence in the whole platform, tipsters said.

Motorola ships just 100,000 Xoom tablets in summer
Motorola Mobility pained a dark picture for its tablet strategy with its results on Thursday. The company shipped just 100,000 Xoom tablets in the summer, or less than a quarter of the 440,000 from the spring and less still than the 250,000 from the winter launch. Motorola gave no explanation for the drop.

Zimbabwe government, Apple in joint education venture
The African nation of Zimbabwe has suffered greatly over the past due to the policies of president Robert Mugabe, but there's a glimmer of hope for the future of the country. Apple and the government of Zimbabwe have entered into a joint venture to distribute solar-powered iPads to rural schools in the country.
The announcement was made by Zimbabwean minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture David Coltart, who met with Apple employees in Paris yesterday. In his Facebook post, he noted that he had a "Great meeting with Apple today in Paris -- unveiled a fascinating new 'School Box' which will take iPads to the most remote rural schools - using solar power and micro projectors we will be able to bring computerized teaching aids to the poorest schools."

Motorola Mobility reports $3.3 billion in revenue and $32 million net loss, offers more details on Google buyout
Just in time for the company to acquired by Google, Motorola Mobility is beginning to right the ship, as evidenced by today's quarterly earnings report. The company reported total net revenues of $3.3 billion -- precisely the same amount earned last quarter, incidentally, and up 11 percent from this time last year -- and a GAAP net loss of $32 million. HP to keep PC group, says it's 'committed'
HP on Thursday reversed its decision to possibly jettison its PC division. The Personal Systems Group would stay after a study determined that it was "right" for customers, shareholders, and staff. It based the conclusion off of the level of integration across the company, including the supply chain, as well as the brand value; recreating all these outside of the company would have been more expensive, HP said.

HP will keep PC division, hope alive
There's been plenty of speculation about what the future holds for HP and its Personal Systems Group -- a group that CEO Leo Apotheker seemed intent to shed -- but the crew now led by CEO Meg Whitman has just confirmed that division is staying home, where it belongs. Meg says the company "objectively evaluated" the idea of spinning PSG off but decided that keeping PSG in-house is "right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees." I'm not a professional chef, but I love to cook and serve up 30 plates of food each day. Like many amateur cooks, I struggle with recalling the differences between sauteing and braising and what makes a roux, a roux. That is why I was so excited to see The Professional Chef land on the iPad. Created by John Wiley & Sons and the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), the digital version of the chef's ultimate bible contains 1,200 pages filled with cooking information. There are 100 videos, 850 recipes, 175 figures, and 750 photographs of food. There's so much content packed into its 36 chapters, it's almost overwhelming, but in a good way.

Forrester reverses stance on keeping Macs out of enterprise
Forrester Research has reversed an earlier policy, and is now encouraging companies to permit Macs in enterprise. Mac use is growing, the firm notes, despite 41 percent of polled companies not technically allowing employee-owned Macs. A number of businesses are even claiming the existence of a "gray market" of sorts, in which workers will trade tips on how to bypass restrictions on the platform. Forrester's David Johnson claims that the subversion is being aided by Apple through Genius Bars, support staff and online forums.

News: Apple launches iTunes movie offerings in new markets
Apple has launched new iTunes Store movie content in a number of new markets. ARMv8 detailed: first 64-bit chip, backwards compatible
ARM on Thursday outlined some of the details of its first 64-bit chip architecture, ARMv8. The design is an extension of the current 32-bit ARMv7 and either keeps or expands on features like its Neon instructions, security, and virtual machine support. Most of the benefit comes from the move to 64-bit by itself, which lets it handle much larger data sets and support more virtual memory, sometimes leading to faster performance.

Electric DeLorean DMC-12 prototype goes round and round (and round) in test drive video
It's already clear that you're selling everything you own in an effort to purchase a 2013 DeLorean DMC-12 EV (and in turn, apply for a home tax deduction when you begin to live out of it), but what hasn't been clear is exactly how it'd perform on the wide open road. Truthfully, we still aren't entirely certain of that, but thanks to a raucous new video of a prototype on the track, we do know that it looks like the most (PG) fun you can have while sitting atop four wheels. Samsung loses attempt to ban iPhone 4S sales in Italy
Here's the latest news from the front in the battle between Samsung and Apple: Apple is victorious in a skirmish in Italy.
Samsung was attempting to block the iPhone 4S release in Italy, which is scheduled for November 4, saying that the new phone infringed on two patents that the Korean manufacturer holds. In the courts in Milan, Italy, judges turned down Samsung's request, but agreed to requests by both manufacturers to submit more evidence to support their positions in the dispute.

Office of Fair Trading gives thumbs up to Amazon's purchase of The Book Depository
Amazon may have faced stiff opposition to its plans to acquire British online bookseller The Book Depository, but one of those not standing in its path is the Office of Fair Trading. Over protests from the UK Booksellers Association, Publishers Association and Independent Publishers Guild, the OFT approved the purchase, saying that the acquisition would not form a de facto monopoly. While Amazon's market share is "strong" its newest purchase only holds between two- and four-percent -- hardly making it a competitor of the internet giant. NASA's Mars rover Curiosity gains DAN apparatus, new lust for water
"You can think of DAN as a reconnaissance instrument." That's a quote from Igor Mitrofanov of the Space Research Institute, Russia, who is being deemed the "principal investigator" of the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons. Apple TV set rumored due in 2013 touting Siri voice control
The Apple TV set Steve Jobs had hinted late in life is still a distance off but already has some of its first ingredients in place, a detailed rumor explained Thursday. As some have suspected, the NY Times understood from sources that the control solution Jobs had "finally cracked" would be Siri, the natural language voice command engine first appearing in the iPhone 4S. The goal would be to eliminate the often troubling remote control altogether and intelligently find what the user wants, whether it's a TV show or an Internet video.

DirecTV for iPad adds live TV viewing
DirecTV has posted a new version of its iPad app, v1.3.1. The app is normally intended to be used as a guide and remote control. The v1.3.1 update, though, introduces support for in-app viewing of live TV. Users must be DirecTV subscribers, and on the same Wi-Fi network as a compatible DirecTV HD DVR.

Microsoft Productivity Future Vision: So soll die Zukunft aussehen

Man hat beim Ansehen dieses Videos von Microsoft gelegentlich das Gefühl, das niemand in der Zukunft mehr reden wird, und man sich eigentlich vor allem in Hotels und diversen virtuellen Räumen aufhält, dennoch ist sicher vieles im Video nicht all zu weit entfernt, einiges vielleicht auch wünschenswert. Mit Sicherheit aber wird sie lange nicht so clean werden, wie vorgestellt, das hat schon in den 60er und 50er Zukunftsvisionen nie wirklich geklappt, denn die Zukunft besteht eben einfach nicht nur aus Designern. Forrester does a 180 on Macs in enterprise, finds most productive staffers = Mac users
I'll bet a lot of us have fought the Mac wars in our own companies. I won some, I lost some, so it's especially gratifying to see Forrester Research urging IT to get over itself and enthusiastically support Macs in the enterprise.
A new report from the research company, authored by senior analyst David K. Johnson, turns the already-stale conventional wisdom about integrating Mac OS machines into enterprise operations completely on its head. Mac-enabled employees are actually the HEROes of business, says Johnson -- Highly Empowered and Resourceful Operatives. This 17% slice of the enterprise workforce are the ones who work longer, give more effort and actually push innovation forward.

Canon S100 hands-on (video)
We managed to sneak in a bit of hands-on time with the Powershot S100 here at PhotoPlus in Manhattan.The followup to Canon's S95 is a fairly slick point-and-shoot. It's not the most compact camera in its space, but the new Powershot is surprisingly lightweight. It's got a healthy 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor with improved low-light performance and a 5x optical zoom, the latter of which could certainly do with a bump. Bloomberg TV+ for iPad offers free live TV feed
Business news agency Bloomberg has launched a new iPad app, Bloomberg TV+. The app's core feature is access to a 24-hour live feed of Bloomberg Television. Notably the access is free, unlike a number of similar iPad apps, which require subscriptions in order to view live feeds.

iPhone exceeds Sprint's expectations
The iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to land at Sprint and sales are better than expected. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse confirmed that early sales of the iPhone 4S have beaten internal estimates and the phone is bringing new customers to the struggling wireless carrier. Hesse wouldn't divulge actual sales numbers, but did confirm the iPhone 4S is the fastest-selling smartphone Sprint has carried.

Well, well, what do we have here? These Logitech Revue boxes just hit the sales floor of a major electronics retailer, prominently sporting "New & Improved: Google TV with Android 3.1 and Android Market" stickers. Logitech also released its quarterly earnings overnight, claiming $7.9 million in sales from the Revue and accessories since dumping its CEO and slashing prices to $99. We're here at the PhotoPlus show in New York, and as usual, the stranger products are being showcased on the outskirts of the show. A company called Rotor Concept out of Southern California was showing off the HPQ-1, a quadcopter designed to lug around your digital camera.The copter itself is surprisingly quiet and steady, the latter of which is no doubt helped out by the presence of four propellers and advanced stabilization system (put the controller down and it will automatically hold its position).

RouteBuddy updates to v3.1, tweaks elevation graphs, more
GPS mapping application RouteBuddy released a bugfix upgrade to its recent v3.1 update. Called v3.1.1, the upgrade addresses several bugs as well as restores support for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) users, fixing an issue that caused the program to be unable to launch in 10.5. The new version dramatically increases the speed of importing large geo-data files, speeds up the rendering of all maps available from the company, and includes more recording data.

Gazelle reports record BlackBerry trade-ins
Used electronics buyer Gazelle has reported a significant uptick in BlackBerry trade-ins, as a large number of owners have recently decided to swap their RIM handsets for cash. Siri hacked onto iPod touch, doesn't fully work
Hackers, who have been busy trying to get the Siri system interface to work on non-iPhone 4S devices, have found some degree of success with almost all members of the current iOS family now that an enterprising pair have grafted Siri onto a current-generation iPod touch, reports Engadget. Apple preps solar power farm for North Carolina datacenter
Apple's North Carolina datacenter may soon get some of its power from green sources, a search through local permits has uncovered. The proposal found by the Charlotte Observer would have some of the 171 acres of unused area across the street from the Maiden-based plant, at 6028 Startown Road, used to set up a solar power farm. Nicknamed "Project Dolphin Solar Farm A Expanded," most details are unknown other than that Apple had to file an erosion control permit (PDF) to promise it wouldn't pollute the nearby area.

Apple to debut 'in-store pickup' program in SF tomorrow
As reported Monday, Apple will begin rolling out a new program that lets customers order merchandise online, but pick it up from the local Apple Store, beginning immediately in the San Francisco area. Online customers will have the option for in-store pickup, with standard items being available immediately. Sprint loses $301m, adds 1.3m users; has 4-year iPhone deal
Sprint touted better results for the summer quarter, its last before it picked up the iPhone 4S. Although it lost $301 million, the loss was much less than both $847 million in the spring and the $911 million of a year ago. It also added 1.3 million total new customers, 304,000 of which were its core subscription customers.

Catcher to reopen key MacBook-related plant next week
A major Apple supplier, Catcher Technology, has confirmed it will fully reopen a closed Chinese plant next week, according to Reuters. The facility has been in limbo since mid-October, when it was forced to temporarily shut down because of complaints of strange odors received by local government. LG mobile loss more than doubles, may see Apple pass by
LG in its summer results saw its mobile group worsen despite its shift to higher-end Android models. The group lost $128.47 million, more than twice what it had lost in the spring. Corning late Tuesday said it had started producing its next-generation tough glass for mobile devices. Lotus Glass has better tolerance for heat and size than earlier technology, making it an ideal fit for future smartphone and tablet displays. The screen is built with next-generation LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) LCDs and OLEDs in mind, where higher resolutions and faster refresh rates could put extra wear on previous glass.

On October 30th the Progress M-13M, an unmanned resupply spacecraft, will start its trip to the International Space Station (ISS). Along with propellant, oxygen, water and crew equipment, the spacecraft will also be carrying two iPads. Study: Windows Phone may grab 12% of European smartphones
Nokia's new Lumia phones may be the key to Microsoft getting relevance once again in smartphones in Western Europe, Strategy Analytics said in a study just before the hardware was unveiled. By effectively buying access to Europe's largest phone maker, Microsoft was estimated to get 12.3 percent, or 14.4 million, of the 117 million smartphones estimated to ship in 2012. Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs was extremely critical of Fox News, and Rupert Murdoch, the CEO of the network's parent company News Corp., Reuters notes. The information comes from the Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson, which shipped on Monday. Nokia to be 'aggressive' in US prices, use street ads
Nokia's Windows Phone senior VP Kevin Shields revealed in a discussion Wednesday that the US launch of its Lumia phones would focus on price in part of a strategy that will also include uncommon ad tactics. He told Gizmodo that the American launch would include "very aggressive" pricing. Pure Music gives smartphone streaming at half Spotify price

Apple today updated iPhoto '11 to v9.2.1, a bugfix update the corrects a crashing and importing issue that appeared whenever there was an old 3ivx codec present when users upgraded iPhoto to v9.2. The update, which is only available via Software Update at present, fixes the issue without requiring users to remove the 3ivx codec, which resolved the issue for users prior to the update. The codec was most commonly installed on Mac systems via the Flip digital video recorder.

Nintendo loss may double own estimates as iPod cuts in
Nintendo might post a loss for the first half of its fiscal year twice as high as what it predicted, Japan's Nikkei newspaper said Wednesday [subscription required]. The game console maker is expected to face a $1.32 billion loss for the period between April and September, nearly twice the $722.4 million it had estimated. Some of the loss would come from a $525.38 million foreign exchange difference given its dependency on North American and European sales, but most would come from poor performance.

RIM sued in class action over BlackBerry outage
RIM on Wednesday was sued (PDF) in a potential class action case for its four-day BlackBerry outage. Consumer Law Group, a firm known for suing at class scale, claimed in Montreal that RIM had neglected customers by not either directly compensating phone owners for the downtime or arranging for carriers to pay. RIM should have given users prorated compensation and taken "full responsibility" for what happened, the lawsuit claimed.

Judge William Alsup gave Google a brief reprieve Wednesday after he delayed Oracle's lawsuit over Java in Android until 2012. Italian judge won't block iPhone 4S launch for Samsung
A court in Milan on Wednesday denied Samsung's attempt to block the iPhone 4S in Italy just days before its release in the country. The country's AGI reported that the judge didn't find Samsung's concerns over 3G patents urgent enough that a preliminary ban needed to be in effect before the Friday launch. Apple confirms dev iTunes Match libaries reset October 27
Apple told developers late Wednesday that it was resetting their iTunes Match accounts for what's likely the last time before the end of October launch. Its need to upgrade the "overall quality and reliability" of the cloud music service would require that the existing accounts be reset on October 27. Google may have given out its own clues that its own music store is imminent. Trying to visit music.google.com from an Android phone or tablet produces a splash page that, along with promoting the existing cloud storage service, it mentions the option to "shop millions of songs" that would be available directly from Android Market. Apple releases spate of EFI updates, Windows QuickTime also
Late in the day, Apple Support released a group of EFI firmware updates to recent Mac models, including the current iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Air models, along with one for the just-discontinued "early 2011" MacBook Pros and one for Lion 10.7.2 specifically. With all four EFI updates, the firmware is being modified to either support or enhance existing Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode. The iPad 3's repeatedly rumored 2048x1536 display may be starting production soon but also pose a challenge. A rumor late Wednesday had production underway as soon as November at previously mentioned LG and Samsung plants. Samsung loses bid to ban iPhone 4S in Italy
Samsung has lost another attempt to get Apple products barred over potential patent infringement, this time in Milan, Italy, where a court denied the Android phone maker's request to have the iPhone 4S launch delayed, the Italian news agency AGI is reporting. The ruling is temporary, however, and both companies will submit additional evidence to explain to disprove the allegations in mid-December. Survey: Apple tops Nokia among Chinese phone buyers
Wall Street financial firm Morgan Stanley has published the results of a poll taken in September among 2,050 Chinese mobile phone users, showing that Apple's iPhone is making rapid gains in the country, while the former leader Nokia is falling out of favor rapidly, reports AppleInsider. Sony acquires Ericsson's mobile interest in buyout

Samsung to appeal Australian ban on Galaxy Tab 10.1
Samsung on Thursday won a chance to appeal Apple's successful, preliminary Australian ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Korean firm's attorney Neil Young claimed that the federal court had taken "irrelevant considerations" into account in blocking the Android tablet. Judge Lindsay Foster, who heard Samsung's request, said he would grant an appeal hearing on November 21 but also cast doubt on Samsung's ability to overturn the ban.

Adobe launches Carousel apps for Mac, iOS
Adobe has released promised Mac and iPad/iPhone clients for Carousel, its new cloud-based photo service. In a manner similar to Apple's Photo Stream, Carousel lets users sync photos across devices. Images can also be shared with friends and family however, and the Carousel apps permit non-destructive editing in a style similar to Adobe's Lightroom.

Nintendo takes official $923m loss for first half of 2011
Nintendo has posted a huge loss for the first six months of the fiscal year and expects the first annual loss in more than 30 years. While better than feared, the video game maker netted a loss of ¥70.27 billion ($923 million) in the six-month period ending on September 30, which compares to a loss of ¥2.01 billion yen just a year earlier. This is due to a mixture of factors, including slowing sales of the Wii, a weak global economy, and a comparatively strong yen that is bad for export profits.

YouTube's professional video channels may be active within a week, anonymous tips maintained on Thursday. The details obtained by the WSJ suggest a broader strategy than thought before and would involve a redesign of the site itself, focusing on channels whether they're live or traditional YouTube subscriptions. SoundCloud has released an update for its self-titled mobile application that allows users to share and discover original music. The v2.0 update has been released as a Universal application, bringing a new interface designed specifically for the iPad. A new waveform design is also included, along with simplifications to the process of posting and viewing comments. Homeowner in talks with Apple about controversial search
Sergio Calderon -- the owner of a home searched for a missing iPhone prototype -- is in talks with Apple, according to his lawyer, David Monroe. While Monroe has declined to provide any details on the discussions, he does say that San Francisco police acted improperly when four plainclothes officers didn't identify two Apple security workers they followed on the search. The lawyer adds that Calderon has done nothing wrong, and that police told Calderon they would get a warrant if he didn't agree to have his house checked. No prototype was found at the time.

Codify brings game, simulation coding to iPad
Two Lives Left has released Codify, a rare programming app for the iPad. The title is based on the Lua language, in part because it doesn't rely heavily on symbols. The app is also intended mainly for games and simulations, although it can be used for other visually-oriented projects as well. Microsoft future vision involves touch everywhere, holograms
Microsoft's Office team has put out a concept video (below) outlining what it imagines in its long-term future. The Productivity Future Vision demo shows a world dominated by touch and gestures, where smartphones are transparent blocks and tablets, walls, and tables all recognize either touch, voice, or in-the-air gestures. It imagines users physically dragging what they're working on from device to device and even includes 3D holograms that go beyond the edge of the display.

I ditched Photoshop for Pixelmator about a year ago, but there were a few things missing in Pixelmator which caused me to fire up Photoshop once in a while. I also recently bought Aperture in an effort to better organize and retouch photos I started taking on my new Canon Rebel. Pixelmator 2 fixes many omissions which had me reaching for Photoshop, and in some ways is better than Aperture. Apple issues firmware updates, Thunderbolt software update, more
Apple has issued a number of updates this week, in addition to iPhoto 9.2.1. Here's what's newly available.
Thunderbolt Software Update 1.1 is for those using Lion on a Thunderbolt-equipped Mac. Apple says it "provides support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and bug fixes for Thunderbolt device compatibility." Mac OS X 10.7.2 or later is required.

Disable that Mac OS X Internet download warning
Mac OS X 10.5 introduced a new feature that warned users when they first opened a file downloaded from the Internet. It's a protection mechanism to prevent users from opening potentially harmful files. It's also extremely annoying for users who download many files from known trustworthy. Thanks to a script from Creative Bits, disabling this feature just became a whole lot easier.
When this download warning first debuted, Macworld detailed a few terminal commands to disable this feature. You could either disable it permanently which removed all protection from accidentally downloaded files or disable it on a case-by-case basis. Running the command

Gazelle reports BlackBerry trade-ins at an all-time high
BlackBerry owners faced a multi-day outage earlier this month that undoubtedly caused some unhappy customers to abandon the platform, but it was the launch of the iPhone 4S that may have led to a mass exodus, says electronics recycler Gazelle. Earlier this month, the trade-in of BlackBerry devices climbed, but in the past week, the number of these trades skyrocketed by 80%. Samsung appeals Australian Galaxy Tab injunction
On Thursday, Samsung began the appeal process that could overturn an injunction preventing it from selling the Galaxy Tab in Australia. Samsung lawyer Neil Young argued that Justice Annabelle Bennett "made errors of law in her approach" and based her injunction decision on "irrelevant considerations." Justice Lindsay Forster, who is presiding over the appeal, allowed Samsung to proceed and expedited the process so the Korean company could have a chance to overturn the injunction before the end of the holiday shopping season. App Store: Hat Apple aus Versehen “Porno”-Downloader genehmigt?
Normalerweise ist Apple sehr gründlich im Umgang mit Zensur.
Doch nun scheint ein dicker Fauxpas passiert zu sein: Die Application “Tube Lader“, derzeit auf Platz 5 der Downloadcharts für kostenlose Apps (und damit offensichtlich beliebt), beinhaltet Links zu Porno-Seiten. Das Programm ist an sich dazu konzipiert, Videos aus Webseiten zu extrahieren und zum Download auf das iPad vorzubereiten.
Auch die Beschreibung im App Store beinhaltet entsprechende Fotos, die nicht wirklich zu Apple’s “Sauberimage” passen und schon gar nicht jugendfrei wirken.

Samsung's SCH-i929 and SCH-W999 dual-screen clamshell get certified in China
Ready for a heavy dose of Android this morning? Then enjoy this Samsung double whammy freshly delivered from China. On the left we have the China Telecom-branded SCH-i929, a 9.7mm-thick handset featuring a Snapdragon MSM8660 chip (likely clocked at 1.5GHz), 4.5-inch 480 x 800 AMOLED display, eight-megapixel camera and GSM plus CDMA2000 connectivity. All of this makes the i929 a near-identical cousin of the Galaxy S II LTE -- same processor, same chassis, but obviously with different network compatibility.

DirecTV adds live video streaming on iPad
The DirecTV app for iPad got a significant bump in capabilities today by adding live streaming to giving you essentially a portable TV you can take to any room of your house.
You have to be on the same network as your DirecTV receiver, and not all channels are available. I'm not seeing the pay movie channels, or the local channels, which are all a matter of rights with the owners of those channels. I counted 38 available channels for streaming, including CNN, Fox News, National Geographic, FX, History Channel, Discovery and many more. FingerFlux system uses magnets to add tactile feedback to touchscreens
We've seen a number of efforts that promise to make touchscreens more tactile, but none quite like this so-called FingerFlux system developed by a team of researchers from Germany's Aachen University. PBS to air Steve Jobs documentary
Coming on the heels of the release of Walter Isaacson's long-anticipated biography of Steve Jobs (and, if you haven't read Chris Rawson's review yet, stop what you're doing and do so), PBS will premiere "Steve Jobs -- One Last Thing" on November 2, time depending on local listings.
The documentary appears to be the televised version of what Isaacson's book has turned out to be -- an unflinching look at Jobs's complex disposition and insights as seen through some of the eyes of the people who knew him

Why Google and Microsoft need to fear Siri
Tech.pinions' Tim Bajarin has opined on why they feel Google and Microsoft hate Siri, citing some excellent sources. As the article states, Google's Andy Rubin told the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg, "You shouldn't be communicating with the phone; you should be communicating with somebody on the other side of the phone." Likewise, Bajarin quotes Microsoft's Andy Lees saying it "isn't super useful."

Sony limits PS Vita game save options, memory card definitely not optional

Apple to build a solar farm next to North Carolina data center
Apple is reportedly building a solar farm to provide energy for its North Carolina data center. An erosion permit granted by Catawba County, North Carolina gives Apple permission to transform 171 acres of vacant land across from the data center into a solar farm. The area will be resloped and will inlcude multiple gravel roads that provide access to the solar panels. It's the first step in a larger plan called Project Dolphin Solar Farm A Expanded. Project Dolphin is the codename given to the consturction project behind Apple's billion dollar data center.

Computer components may one day recycle their own wasted heat
Imagine a computer that isn't just designed to "deal" with the heat produced by its components, but one that actually uses that wasted energy to power some of its high-tech internals. That's the potential of a new discovery out of the Physical and Technical Institute (PTB) of Braunschweig, Germany. Researchers discovered what they're calling tunnel magneto thermoelectric voltage, essentially that by heating one side of a magnetic tunnel structure (the types of switches found in magnetic RAM and in the heads of hard drives) they can control the flow of electricity across its poles.
