iPhone 4S rumored to offer 512MB RAM instead of 1GB
Despite early rumors to the contrary, TUAW is reading reports from around the Internet that the new iPhone 4S will use 512MB of RAM memory, not the full 1GB many had hoped for. In terms of specs, this falls right in line with the iPad 2's 512MB of LPDDR2 RAM, per that device's iFixit tear-down.
Reports of the 512MB RAM first surfaced from the developers of Infinity Blade on a Eurogamer.net interview

Dear Aunt TUAW,
What the heck is going on with eyeTV why after 3-4 years of promises do they still not support dual tuners, or channel sorting? i've tried to reach out to elgato in various different digital ways, but to no avail, does TUAW have any contacts they could touch on to figure this out?
Alternatively, is there any mac software that will do what EyeTV does, and give me support for my dual Terratec H7 Tuners?

Steve Jobs' cause of death identified as pancreatic tumor
Santa Clara County's Public Health Department on Monday identified the cause of Steve Jobs' unfortunate death. An official certificate said that "respiratory arrest," as the result of a metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor, as the immediate factor. Inspectors didn't see a need to perform an autopsy on Jobs before his funeral on Friday.

Official cause of death for Steve Jobs released
Bloomberg reports that official details of Steve Jobs's death have been released. Jobs died at home at approximately 3 P.M. local time on October 5. The official cause of death: respiratory arrest brought about by his pancreatic tumor. Most of us assumed that was the case, but this is one time we all wish we'd been wrong.
Apple was reportedly aware of Steve's condition and notified local police days in advance

Facebook debuts long-awaited iPad app, shows iPhone plans
Facebook is finally launching its long-delayed iPad app later today, according to reports. The completed app is essentially identical to a leaked copy from July, sporting a two-pane view, and many traits carried over from the iPhone interface. Conspicuously missing are some of Facebook's recent web additions, such as the Timeline view; the iPad app does however have features such as chat and fullscreen games.

London's Covent Garden Apple Store hit by robbers
In what is the most high-profile Apple Store robbery to date, a gang of thugs carried out a smash-and-grab raid on London's Covent Garden Apple Store. The store, which opened fourteen months ago, is Apple's second flagship store. It was built in a remodeled 19th century building and features a glass roof over a courtyard that was originally designed for delivery of merchandise by horses.

The iPad gets a Facebook app, finally
Kind of like eating a peanut butter sandwich with no jelly, the most obvious app missing from the iPad has been Facebook -- until today. The New York Times reports that the site has finally confirmed the app's availability just in time for eager social networkers to like, subscribe and stalk from the slate. According to software engineer Leon Dubinsky, the app will highlight the multitouch awesomeness of the iPad, something that's unavailable from the website alone even from a touchscreen device. Facebook for iPad out now
TechCrunch and a few other sites are posting that the Facebook iPad app has finally arrived on the App Store. I don't quite see it on the store yet, but the news has apparently dropped according to a schedule run by Facebook itself, so the app should follow soon. The app looks about like you'd expect a Facebook iPad app to look, with a sidebar available in landscape mode, and a dropdown menu to browse the various sections in portrait mode.
One of the biggest features of the new app is integration with other apps -- apparently the app can send you directly to other apps on your iPad when you browse to them from a friend's status or news post. For example, if you read about a Words with Friends

T-Mobile unveils Galaxy Tab 10.1 in U.S. despite Apple lawsuit
This is about to get interesting. T-Mobile dropped a press release last night saying that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will soon be available on its network. The problem is T-Mobile seems to be jumping the gun, as a court hearing on Apple's motion for a US-based injunction against the device is just three days away.

comScore: iOS still trumps Android in real, total user base
Despite common perception, iOS still has the absolute lead in its total installed base in the US, comScore found Monday. Helped by Apple's wide majority in the tablet space, the iPad, iPhone, and oPod touch combined made up 43.1 percent of American use this past August. Android, almost exclusively led by smartphones, was at 34.1 percent.

Aviary launches first iPad SDK, new API extensions
Aviary has launched its first iPad SDK, as well as several new API extensions, according to All Things Digital. The developer specializes in an image editing platform which third-party developers can insert into web and native mobile apps. Square at $2 billion in annual payments, drops user limits
Square, the company that allows the use of Android and iOS smartphones and tablets to process credit card payments, revealed on Monday that it is now processing $2 billion in payments. At the same time, the company has axed its $1,000 per week transaction limit to users. Now, instead of having to wait between a few hours to a few days, even new merchants get the proceeds from a sale the next business day.

UK 4G network auction delayed, spectrum sell-off pushed back to the end of 2012

Details on the Samsung Galaxy S III leak out: 1.8GHz dual-core CPU and 12MP camera?
We're still awaiting the release of the Samsung Galaxy S II on T-Mobile this week, and yet it's already starting to look like yesterday's half-eaten breakfast. That's because some fuzzy details are now leaking out about its inevitable successor, the mystical Galaxy S III. The leaked presentation slide above, uncovered by Phandroid, shows a phone that's packing a 1.8GHz dual-core Exynos 4212 CPU with 2GB of RAM and a 12 megapixel rear-facing camera. Use your iPhone to conduct a floating orchestra
Poietic Studio has created a unique iPhone app and musical instrument that lets you conduct a virtual floating orchestra. The instrument has 19 small spheres that float on a puff of air above individual interconnected cups. Each sphere is matched to a different instrument and will rise and fall in response to volume. Just like a conductor controlling a real orchestra, users can control each instrument and its volume via an iPhone app. The first iteration of this app-device combo uses controls on the iPhone screen, while the next version will use motion control. MacBook Pro mit 3G wieder im Apple-Labor

Ihr erinnert euch an diesen Prototypen? Fand man in Cupertino gar nicht lustig, dass ein experimentelles MacBook Pro mit 3G auf eBay von Fanboy zu Fanboy weitergegeben wurde. Apple forderte das Gerät zurück und Carl Frega, der letzte Eigentümer, hatte sich breitschlagen lassen und das Laptop nach Cupertino zurückgeschickt. Nicht ohne jedoch die Rückgabe der von ihm eingesetzten Ersatzteile einzufordern, die das macBook wieder funktionstüchtig gemacht hatten. Sprint iPhone 4S launch under tight lock, may fire leakers
Apple and Sprint are taking extensive steps to keep the Sprint iPhone launch under tight control, a detailed rumor may have uncovered on Monday. While the phones were already expected to ship on or near Wednesday and stay under lock and key until Friday, BGR was told by a reputed source that staff have a firm ultimatum not to open any of the devices. Shocker! Microsoft to produce dual-core, LTE Windows Phones, other modern things
This just in: Microsoft is ready to take the plunge into mobile modernity at its own pace. During a recent interview with All Things D, Windows Phone President Andy Lees revealed a few details about Redmond's future crop of handsets, which will apparently include both LTE capabilities and dual-core processors. Just as the sun always rises in the morning, every time a new iPhone is about to come out, somebody gets one just before the official launch and ruins the fun for the rest of us. In this case, a video from AppVV.com appears to show an iPhone 4S running some benchmarks and also demonstrates how to change Siri settings.

Floating Orchestra: Soundskulptur mit fliegenden Bällen
Ein äußerst ausgefuchstes Soundprojekt ist das Floating Orchestra der englischen Designagentur Poietic. 19 Kugeln werden per Luft in die Höhe gesteuert und repräsentieren dabei je eine Soundspur. Sales of the iPhone 4 and 3GS are still doing well, even with the impending of launch of the iPhone 4S later this week, says Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. Although non-specific, the claim is said to stem from checks with US cellphone carriers. Walkely adds that preorders of the iPhone 4S appear to be doing well, something Apple itself has validated by announcing that over 1 million preorders were made in the space of a day. By comparison, just 600,000 iPhone 4s were preordered in a similar timeframe last year.

Customers begin to receive iPhone 4S shipment notices
The excitement surrounding the iPhone 4S continues to build now that pre-order customers are receiving shipping notices. Customers, particularly those on Sprint, are receiving shipping confirmation notices from UPS that their packages are being processed. Most packages are being shipped 2nd day air, but don't expect your iPhone 4S to arrive earlier than the 14th. In the past, UPS has held Apple shipments at the local warehouse until the set delivery date. Even if you beg and plead for the packages at the warehouse, UPS will not release them until the designated time.

During a recent edition of TUAW TV Live, the question of how iCloud works in applications came up. After some internal consultation, we came to the conclusion that Apple has fully announced this feature and that its workings would not be considered confidential.

Sprint may not extend equipment protection plan to iPhone 4S
A leaked Sprint slide suggests the wireless carrier will not be offering its Total Equipment Protection plans for the iPhone 4S. Customers with an iPhone 4S who want to add a protection plan to their phone are encouraged to purchase an AppleCare+ plan. These new plans from Apple offer accidental damage on top of the traditional coverage for $99. You can also purchase a third party plan from a company like Square Trade or through your homeowners or renters insurance. A contributor to AppVV in China has managed to get pre-release access to an iPhone 4S in a hands-on video (below) before it has even started shipping in earnest. The short clip shows it nearly twice as fast in the overall BrowserMark test at 85967 points. In the JavaScript-heavy SunSpider web test, it was even faster: it was nearly as fast as the iPad 2, which itself was four times faster than the original iPad and iPhone 4.

Gang on motorbikes raids Covent Garden Apple Store
The Covent Garden Apple Store in London, England was the target of an overnight smash-and-grab robbery, the city's Metropolitan Police have confirmed. The Met say they received word of the crime at about 1AM local time, and believe that "around 7 moped riders/motorcyclists" were involved, most or all of which had passengers riding with them. In any case, everyone involved is said to have been wearing a full-face helmet.

iPhone 4S pre-orders top 1 million in 24 hours
Apple has reported that iPhone 4S pre-orders topped one million units in a single day, breaking the previous single-day record held by the iPhone 4 (600,000). In fact, it was Apple's most successful first-day pre-order ever. Apple's Phil Schiller said in a press release, "We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S."
The iPhone 4S will be available for sale on October 14 in more than 22 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, and Finland.

Wondering what happened to that prototype 3G MacBook Pro Apple had pulled off eBay? Not too long ago, the boys in Cupertino reclaimed the specimen, along with a handful of spare parts the would-be auctioneer used to get the rig back into working order. Windows Phone catching up with dual-core an LTE, leap others
Microsoft is planning to move Windows Phone's to modern hardware features like dual-core processors and LTE 4G once the timing's right, the company mobile head Andy Lees said in a discussion Monday. Big Blue Bubble is the developer behind the Burn the Rope game that we liked a while back. They're back on the App Store with the strange but fun Fling a Thing. In this one, you control a little creature (which is actually a little too close to a bug for me to really like it, but we got along anyway) with a sucker on one end, so that you can stretch him back and fling him up into the upper part of the screen. There, you'll find items and bubbles to collect, and the game itself is a distance title, where you try to make your way up through various sets of stages while trying to do the best you can with the limited number of shots you're given.

Netflix backtracks on Qwikster, will keep DVDs and streaming under the same URL
The Netflix Contrition Tour 2011 continues today, as the company announced today that it won't be spinning off DVD-by-mail rentals into a new company called Qwikster. While the plan for DVD operations to be separated internally appears to still be under way (no word yet on the promised videogame rental option), for customers things will stay the same, with one login and one website. While the retreat will probably prompt even more speculation about the company's true plans, CEO Reed Hastings has issued yet another apology to customers, admitting Netflix may have moved too fast this time.

Einzig den Preis waren wir euch bislang schuldig geblieben, zumindest in den USA steht der jetzt fest: 599 Dollar. Sprint won't have own iPhone insurance, starts shipping 4S
An internal staff memo has warned Sprint iPhone buyers that they won't have its typical Total Equipment Protection insurance. Customers who buy the phone but need help will only be offered direct replacements when they qualify, SprintFeed has learned. Talkcast tonight, 10pm ET/7pm PT: Somber Edition
It's Sunday, and like most every Sunday, we will be getting together for the Talkcast tonight at 10PM Eastern, 7PM Pacific time. This week's will be unpredictable since we have happy news to discuss, as well as less happy news. We have some guests joining us tonight as well, and we'd love to hear your memories of Steve. Micron und Samsung kooperieren bei Speicherwürfel
