Ex-Skype founders confirm Vdio, take on Netflix

Following an earlier investigation, Vdio has confirmed plans to launch as a direct competitor to Netflix and other major movie services. Created by Skype and Rdio creators Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, the company told GigaOM that it would provide the "best in TV and movies, right now." Its teaser page includes TV shows such as Mad Men as well as movies like The Dark Knight, suggesting it had at least lined up deals with AMC, Fox, Showtime, Sony, and Warner Bros., among others.

North American iPhone 4S sales now reservation-only at Apple stores

Apple updated its "How to Buy" iPhone 4S page earlier today with instructions detailing how US and Canadian customers can go about getting an iPhone 4S. Sirius XM rolls out Edge satellite radio with expanded channel lineup

Apple lawyer says it owns a "thicket of patents"

A 65-page document recently filed in Australia by Apple in the Samsung patent case says that not only does Apple own "a thicket of patents" (which I'll guess just means "a whole lot"), but that Apple is willing to license some of its patents, while still keeping others for itself. Siri, Google Translate act as travel companions for AllThingsD blogger

AllThingsD's Ina Fried was in Taipei over the weekend, and she took along both an iPhone 4S and an Android device with Google Translate onboard. What she found is that both of the devices and their accompanying software were very good travel companions. Signs Apple's stock of the iPhone 4S were running low manifested themselves Monday with a quiet update to its How To Buy page. Find My Mac not working for you? You're not alone

If you're having trouble getting Lion to let you enable Find My Mac, you're not the only one. It seems at least a few people are running into a problem where they see the above message in the iCloud preference pane, but clicking the update button (or running System Update manually) yields no updates to install. If this describes your situation, the good news is that there is a solution -- the bad news is that it might require a little bit of patience. Before getting too worked up over the problem, though, it's a good idea to try the simplest methods first. Adobe brings Reader to iPhone, iPad

Adobe has released the first iOS version of Reader, its dedicated PDF viewer. While iOS can already open PDF files, Reader supports some additional features, such as the ability to load portfolios, packages, annotations and drawing markups. Users can open documents protected by passwords or Adobe LiveCycle, and launch files in other apps using an "Open In" command. GE's new factory will push out one solar panel every ten seconds

General Electric is sending its troops to Colorado to conquer the thin film solar panel business. The 38th state will play home to a new facility that leverages the supermodel-thin panel know-how of PrimeStar Solar, which GE scooped up back in 2008. ITC finds Apple didn't violate HTC patents

HTC faced another setback in its attempts to counter Apple's legal campaign on Monday after the ITC denied its original patent counter complaint. Judge Charles Bullock determined that Apple hadn't violated four patents for basics such as phone dialing and energy management. Developer Marco Arment has released v4.0 of Instapaper for iOS. In conjunction with the Instapaper service, the app saves webpages for later reading, making them available both offline and in a more eye-friendly format. The v4.0 code represents a major update, for instance completely overhauling the iPad interface, presenting items in a grid with a control sidebar. The iPhone interface has also been changed to include things like a dark mode, an option to hide the status bar, and new font and sharing panels.

Samsung continued its string of one-for-one legal responses to Apple on Monday with lawsuits against the company in Australia and Japan. The Australian complaint hopes to block the iPhone 4S for allegedly violating the same three 3G standards patents it has been trying to use in Europe. Ten things I want Siri to be able to do for me

Now that I've had my iPhone 4S for a couple of days, I'm amazed with what Siri can do. I've asked a number of questions -- real ones, not questions like "What is the meaning of life?" -- and have been totally impressed with how my interaction with the iPhone has changed. But there are more things I'd love to be able to do with Siri, which is the reason for this post. Everyone should understand that Siri is currently a beta product from Apple. A lot of the things I'm talking about here should happen once the product is out of beta and developers are given access to a Siri API.
