Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Amaze 4G on sale at T-Mobile
Sure, we knew this day was coming, but now the wait is finally over. Now the main question for T-Mobile customers at the end of their contract is whether to pick up the Samsung Galaxy S II or HTC Amaze 4G. Both handsets are now on sale from the carrier, running $229 and $259, respectively (plus plan, post-rebate, naturally). Thankfully, we've got a full review of the 4.52-inch Galaxy S II magenta edition and a hands-on with the 4.3-inch Amaze 4G, which should help make the deciding a bit easier.

iOS 5 features: New Multi-Touch gestures for iPad 2
In developer betas of iOS 4.3, Apple introduced new four- and five-finger multitasking gestures for the iPad. Those gestures didn't make it to the public release of iOS 4.3 for some reason, which was unfortunate because a lot of beta testers found them extremely useful. Fortunately, these new gestures have made the cut for iOS 5 -- at least for the iPad 2. Owners of the original iPad are still out of luck, it seems.
The gestures aren't active by default, but going into the General section of the Settings app will give you a simple On/Off choice. Apple even gives a handy mini-primer of what the gestures do:

Review: Bare Bones Software's BBEdit 10.1
BBEdit has been around seemingly forever -- it first appeared in 1991, when System 6 was the OS of the day. Gartner: Mac up to 12.9% in US, Lenovo second worldwide
The Mac is now solidly in third place in US market share, Gartner's summer estimates showed. At a predicted 2.3 million Macs, Apple will have shot from 10.8 percent a year ago to 12.9 percent. Once-growing Toshiba has now started shrinking and fell slightly to 8.4 percent for fourth place, while Acer's vulnerability to the iPad left it falling by a quarter to fifth place at 7.8 percent.

Server issues preventing iOS 5 updates for many - TUAW recommends a dose of zen
Sometimes, bad upgrades happen. Multiple users are reporting an error 3200 or 3002 when they try to upgrade to iOS 5, or getting a warning about ineligible upgrades. Some others are encountering other scary, silly, or exasperating iTunes hurdles on the path to bringing your iOS device into the latest firmware.
The 3200 and 3002 errors are the most pernicious and widespread of the problems we've heard of today, and they're most likely due to Apple's servers being overwhelmed by literally millions of users all trying to upgrade at once. Personally, my 10.7.2 upgrade has had "About 3 hours left" now for, well, hours.

Photo Stream, NHL, AirPlay mirroring and more added to Apple TV with software update
It got a bit overshadowed by Apple's other software updates earlier today, but Apple TV users also have a few new features to enjoy whenever they're ready to plop down on the couch. Version 4.4 of the Apple TV software is now available to download, which adds the new Photo Stream feature to view photos stored in iCloud, as well as AirPlay mirroring, plus content from the NHL and Wall Street Journal, and a new movie trailer section. You'll also now be able to view subtitles in Netflix (when available, of course), and you have a few new slideshow themes

Safari 5.1.1 boost JavaScript performance, fixes glitches
Included with OS X 10.7.2 and also available for Windows is Safari 5.1.1, an update of Apple's signature web browser. The release adds iCloud support and is said to increase JavaScript performance by as much as 13 percent over Safari 5.1. Much of the upgrade, though, is dedicated to patching up bugs, such as ones causing hangs, excessive memory use, instability and opening links in windows instead of tabs.

Cyberpower outs Gamer Scorpius line with AMD Bulldozer CPUs
Custom gaming PC maker CyberpowerPC has introduced its new Gamer Scorpius line on Wednesday. All are based on AMD's FX-series Bulldozer CPUs and include the Gamer Scorpius 7500, Gamer Scorpius 8000, Gamer Scorpius 9000 and Gamer Scorpius 9500. Cards app is available: Hallmark beware!
The app you've all been anxiously waiting for since the "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4th, Cards, is now available as a free download on the App Store.
Cards allows you to create a number of specialized greeting cards ranging from birthday cards to trip post cards. You can add your own photo and words, then buy the card and postage through an in-app purchase. Sending a card in the U.S. costs $2.99, while sending it internationally costs $4.99.

iOS 5 features: Custom notification sounds and alerts now available
In January, I called on Apple to allow iOS users to customize the notification sounds on their devices beyond the nearly two dozen built-in sounds offered on the iPhone 4 and iPad. Back then I said, "The iPhone has been on the market for going on four years now, and yet we still haven't been blessed with the ability to use our own sounds for these alert tones. Garmin ANT+ adapter for iPhone undergoes FCC testing

Cards, Movie Trailers apps join updates to iWork, iMovie
Complementing the introduction of Find My Friends and AirPort Utility, Apple has launched two more iOS apps, plus updates to several existing titles. The first of the new apps is Cards, a previously announced program that lets users insert custom text and photos into 21 basic designs and have real-world greeting cards mailed to addresses around the world. This costs $3 when mailing within the US, or $5 when sending a card to an international address.

iOS 5 features: Changes in Music app for iPad
With iOS 5, the iPad's Music app has been completely overhauled. The first clue is in the name; rather than being called the "iPod" app, complete with an increasingly anachronistic classic iPod icon, it's been re-branded as the same "Music" app the iPod touch has had since day one. However, the changes don't stop there, because the Music app's interface is almost completely different from the iPod app it replaces.

iOS 5 features: Calendar
iOS 5 has arrived, and with it come some really nice updates to the Calendar app. There aren't a whole lot of new things; the app's basic functionality of saving events on dates and showing them back in various views hasn't changed, but there are a few new elements. First up are the new views. On the iPhone and iPod touch, you'll be able to see a week view where you can scroll all the way through from Monday to Sunday. On the iPad there's a new year view, where you can pick up a wide angle look of what your schedule is like.
In the views where it's appropriate, you can now drag event borders around to set up the various end and start times for each event (dragging a meeting from 1 pm to 2 pm to last for an hour, for example). You can add, rename, and delete whole calendars right on your iOS device. And t

Apple hat soeben neben Mac OS X 10.7.2 auch die Integration von iCloud für Windows-PCs zum Download bereitgestellt. Pages, Numbers und Keynote für iOS mit iCloud-Anbindung
Die iOS-Ausgaben von Pages, Numbers und Keynote liegen erwartungsgemäß ebenfalls in neuen Versionen vor. Mit Hilfe der iCloud-Anbindung ist es möglich, Dokumente über mehrere Geräte hinweg synchron zu halten. Apple TV update released, adds new content providers
With all the other iOS-based devices in Apple's lineup getting an update today, it's no surprise that the Apple TV received one as well. The update is expected to add access to Photo Stream and will also add the new iTunes Movie Trailers app that was released for iOS today. Other new features include content from the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Wall Street Journal Live. We'll update with a full changelog once one is available.

Garmin ANT+ adapter for iPhone hits the FCC
There's already a few options available for folks looking to pair their ANT+ device (i.e. a Garmin sport watch or cycling computer) with their iPhone, but it looks like Garmin is now about to get in on the act itself. While details are fairly light, the device sketched out above has turned up at the FCC for the requisite testing and approval, and it's definitely an ANT+ adapter for the iPhone, which we can only presume will work in conjunction with an app of some sort. Hopefully Garmin will fill in some of those remaining details sooner rather than later.

Aperture 3.2 adds iCloud integration, photo stream
Apple's pro photography app, Aperture, has been updated to version 3.2. The latest version changes all Aperture's references to MobileMe into iCloud integration instead. It also introduces support for Photo Stream, which allows photos taken on iOS devices to automatically sync to all of your registered devices via iCloud.
Aperture 3.2 also comes with a load of bug fixes, detailed below:

On the HDR-equipped iPhone 4 (and likely on the 4S as well), the Camera app now displays an Options button at the top of the screen between the flash and camera selection buttons. A tap on the button displays two switches -- Grid and HDR -- that are used to turn on or off a rule of thirds grid and the High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDR) capabilities of the camera. On the iPad 2 and iPhone 3GS, neither of which have HDR capabilities, the grid switch is still available to assist in taking more aesthetically pleasing photos.

OS X 10.7.2 brings iCloud support to Lion
Apple is now seeding OS X 10.7.2 to the public. The update is available through Lion's Software Update function, and should measure about 435.5MB in standard form. The main upgrade is support for iCloud, allowing Lion users to sync and backup data such as email, calendars, contacts, and Safari bookmarks and Reading Lists. Apple has released Remote 2.2 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. This update offers a number of changes, including iOS 5 compatibility and the ever-popular "stability and performance improvements."

Intel may be giving up on smart TVs, ceding market to ARM

As originally reported by AnandTech, and now confirmed by the company itself, Chipzilla is closing down its Digital Home Group and folding the team and resources into its tablet division. iOS 5 features: Wi-Fi Sync
One feature of iOS 5 that has become a favorite during my beta-testing of the new mobile operating system is Wi-Fi Sync. This is exactly what a lot of iPhone users have wanted since 2007, and now it's finally here and working well.
To sync with iTunes on your Mac over Wi-Fi, you need to open Settings > General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync on your iOS device and also have iTunes up and running on your Mac. On iTunes, be sure to check "Sync with this [iOS device] over Wi-Fi," which is found in the Summary information for the iOS device you're trying to sync.

Foursquare Radar for iOS 5 brings location auto-awareness
Foursquare put the iPhone back at the front of its app priorities with an update to its iOS app (App Store). Radar uses iOS 5-specific background location features to automatically notify a user when close to a given location. It can at a minimum send a notice when friends have recently checked in nearby, but it will also flag unused locations on a to-do list to remind users when they're close.

Sprint denies unlocked micro-SIM for iPhone 4S
Sprint representatives are now reportedly denying that its version of the iPhone 4S will have an unlocked micro-SIM slot. "That is correct," comments Sprint spokeswoman Michelle Mermelstein. Sprint won't offer GSM iPhone 4S unlocked
A report from yesterday claimed Sprint was going to sell the iPhone 4S with an unlocked SIM card, but a Sprint spokesperson has confirmed that rumor is false. Speaking to Ars Technica, the representative said Sprint will support international roaming, but only with a Sprint international rate plan. You can't pop in any micro-SIM from the least expensive carrier.

Find My Friends: Fun, useful and secure
With the release of iOS 5 comes another fun and useful app: Find My Friends (free). The app allows you to share your location with friends, who can then use the app on their iOS devices to figure out exactly where you are.

Report suggests Android app downloads will overtake iPhone by summer
June 2012 is the date that monthly Android App downloads will exceed monthly iOS app downloads says Xyologic, a German company that indexes both the Android Market and iOS App Store. Currently, iOS has about 1.45 billion downloads each month, while Android has 640 million. Assuming Android continues its meteoric rise and iOS's growth stabilizes, both platforms will have a staggering 3.2 billion downloads per month in June 2012. At this point, Android will begin to eclipse iOS. Xyologic also predicts Android will surpass iOS in the total number of downloads sometime in mid-2013.

More than a fifth of smartphones sold in Q2 use 4G: NPD
During the last quarter in the US market, about 22 percent of all smartphones sold supported 4G networks, the NPD Group found. This is a huge jump from last year's quarter, which saw only three percent of all smartphones be 4G capable. 'iPad mini' in works to fight Kindle Fire, analyst suggests
Research points to a new, cheaper iPad coming in "the first few months" of 2012, according to Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. The claim is based on White's meetings with Apple suppliers while on a visit to China. Samsung to tweak Galaxy S II, more to get around Dutch ban
Samsung said it planned to release "upgraded" versions of the Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, and Galaxy Ace to jump around Apple's successful ban on their sale in the Netherlands. Apple's Find My Friends app now available
In advance of iOS 5, Apple has released Find My Friends, a location sharing app similar to Glympse. As the name implies, Find My Friends will let you locate your friends on a map. It'll also let you share your location so your friends can find you.
For those concerned about privacy, the location sharing feature can be turned on permanently or only temporarily which is great for when you want your friends to meet you while you're eating dinner at a local restaurant, but not when you go home. Apple's iCloud, Newsstand go live in advance of iOS 5
As promised, Apple's iCloud service has today gone live. The most conspicuous sign of this is the activation of iCloud.com, which no longer has any beta labels. For most people however web functions are currently limited to Find My iPhone, since iOS 5 or an iCloud-compatible version of OS X Lion is required to tap into Mail, Contacts, Calendar, or iWork. iOS 5 should go public later today, likely around 10AM Pacific time, or 1PM Eastern; Apple has not said when OS X 10.7.2 will become available for Lion owners.

Apple Design Award-winning Pulse News has been updated with Pulse Sync, a new feature that allows for instant syncing of sources across devices for anyone with a free pulse.me account. In my case, I have Pulse News on both my iPhone and iPad; adding a new source to my news feed on the iPhone will automatically sync it to the news feed on my iPad. It's a great new feature that works quite seamlessly, and it ensures I have essentially the same news reading experience no matter which device I'm using.

BlackBerry failures persist, expand to North America
RIM's BlackBerry Internet Service outage has not only persisted into its third full day as of Wednesday but has expanded into North America. Starting from overnight and escalating in the morning, those in Canada, Mexico, and the US are also seeing delays and sometimes complete service failures. Aiko Island is a physics puzzler with a little different take than usual -- instead of flinging cute little guys around, you're instead working to keep them from falling off of the screen. The idea is that there are little blue creatures and little red creatures, and by deleting some of the red creatures (and/or support structures, just by touching them), you can remove them from the screen without letting the little blue guys fall.
It may sound complicated, but once you dive it, it's really that perfect mix of easy to understand and (eventually) really hard to master. Apple rumored switching iPad 2 orders over battery leaks
Part supplier sources maintained Wednesday that Apple had recently been pushed into switching battery supply for the iPad 2. Apple moved some of its orders from Simplo to Dynapack at the end of September after Simplo's eastern China plant produced some leak-prone lithium-polymer packs, according to Digitimes. The company has released its Bobsled app for iOS. Bobsled is T-Mobile's web-based phone and messaging service. Sony to recall 1.6 million Bravia TVs due to melting components
A vast number of Bravia LCD TVs dating from 2007 and 2008 will be recalled after components in some Japanese sets went into meltdown and started smoking. So far only eleven incidents have been reported and it looks like no one has been hurt or experienced any wider damage, but Sony says it wants to take back 1.6 million TVs that were sold in the US, Europe, Japan and elsewhere. Auf der CTIA Enterprise & Applications gezeigt wurde Motorolas Atrix 2, das sich unsere US-Kollegen bei dieser Gelegenheit ein wenig genauer angeschaut haben. Ausgestattet mit einem 1GHz TI OMAP-Prozessor mit einem GB RAM hat das 4,3-Zoll Smartphone ein qHD 960 x 540-Display und 4G am Start und liegt augenscheinlich nicht nur gut in der Hand, sondern macht auch sonst eine gute Figur. Verizon and Sprint to offer U.S. unlocking of iPhone 4S
MacWorld Senior Editor Jason Snell is reporting that Sprint plans to offer the iPhone 4S with its micro-SIM slot unlocked, and that Verizon will remove the carrier lock from any iPhone 4S if the customer has been with them for 60 days or more in good standing (and requests an "international unlock"). Apple itself sells the iPhone 4 and 4S (along with 3G iPad) with the micro-SIM "factory" unlocked, but U.S. carriers generally put a "carrier" lock on them to ensure customers don't switch networks easily.

iCloud is now live, no iTunes Match seen yet
Apple has officially unveiled iCloud, and it is now available to all users. Some people, myself included, were able to log in early Tuesday afternoon even though the site prompted for a developer's ID (of which I am not one), and then the page was updated an hour ago to reflect that iCloud is now open to all.
There is no mention of iTunes Match yet, but as the next version of iTunes has already been seeded to developers with iTunes Match include, we expect to see it implemented fairly quickly.
Not all features are enabled yet, mostly the iWork apps because they require an update to the iOS apps that hasn't been pushed out yet. We will have a more in-depth look at iCloud as the day goes on.iCloud is now live, no iTunes Match seen yet origin

Pegatron iPhone 4S shipments said back up to 15 million
Concerns that Pegatron might have lost iPhone orders due to demand might have been premature, Taiwan's Commercial Times claimed Wednesday. Sprint to reveal iPhone's financial hit next quarter
Sprint will discuss the financial effect of carrying the iPhone with its next quarterly results, the carrier's chairman James Hance said in attempts to make amends for its botched strategy event on Friday. AMD staked out at least a short-term lead in desktop processors Wednesday with its first-ever eight-core processors for the home in its FX series. The 3.1GHz FX-8120 and 3.6GHZ FX-8150 have a two-core advantage over current Intel chips without sacrificing top speed. Piper Jaffray: iPhone 3GS upgrade stampede ahead
Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray believes a cavalcade of current iPhone 3GS users, who skipped the iPhone 4 for a variety of reasons, will move to the iPhone 4S by the millions over the next year, accounting for up to 18 percent of Apple's iPhone sales, AppleInsider reports. Duo who 'found' iPhone 4 prototype sentenced to probation
Brian Hogan, the man who obtained a lost iPhone 4 prototype and later admitted he "regretted" not returning it to Apple, was sentenced to one year of probation, 40 hours of community service and will pay Apple $250 in restitution, CNet reports. A friend of Hogan's named Sage Wallower, who allegedly helped Hogan "shop" the prototype to media outlets, also received the same sentence. HP has second thoughts on spinning out PC business
New HP CEO Meg Whitman's accelerated review of the fate of its PC business may see her change her mind, insiders detailed Tuesday. Advisors on the subject have told the new executive that the costs of breaking out the group into a separate company might be more than the cost savings, the WSJ heard. Shedding the PC business would hurt HP's ability to get low prices on its remaining hardware and would cut into the profits of what was left.

Verizon set to drop some LTE on 13 more cities November 17th
Get ready Little Rock, Kansas City, Cedar Rapids and the greater Providence area, because Verizon is getting ready to unleash some serious LTE on all of you. The carrier is expending its coverage by 13 more cities on November 17th, bringing the total to more than 175. That date will also see coverage expansions in five areas, including Minneapolis / St. Paul, Louisville, Grand Rapids, Pittsburgh, and Nashville. DirecTV's Nomad box shares recordings with mobile devices
DirecTV has introduced the Nomad device, which will let users send DVR recordings to mobile devices as well as PCs. Doing so requires a special app for desktop PCs or iPhone (free, App Store), with iPad, Mac and Android apps due out soon. The device can store as many as 20 hours of DVR content and connect to external hard drives for more.

Your iPhone 4S may have already shipped. Here's how to check
I've been obsessing over the Apple Online Store's "Your Orders" page for the last two days, hoping that my iPhone 4S was on the way. But all I was getting was a "Preparing Shipment" notice, not a UPS or FedEx tracking number.

RIM: BlackBerry outages trigged by dead switch, bad backup
RIM late Tuesday gave a statement finally addressing the two-day ongoing BlackBerry outage affecting most of the Eastern hemisphere and now parts of South America. The firm briefed Pocket-lint that the outage was triggered by a "core switch failure." A backup was available, but that didn't switch over properly, triggering a "large backlog" as e-mail and messages came in but couldn't be processed.

See Rome as it is and as it was
Rome MVR (mixed virtual reality) is a very cool and innovative iPhone app that allows you to see views of the Roman Coliseum today, and -- with a tap on the screen -- also shows you 3D computer renderings of the location as it was at the peak of the Roman Empire. If you are actually at the location, the app activates the iPhone camera, engaging what the developers call the 'Time Leap' system so you see the Coliseum as it was. Move left and right, up and down, and your 3D perspective changes. If you aren't in Rome, you get current photos, and you can still move your iPhone to survey the site.

Evolio's 2.2-pound U9 to drop softly in December
We hadn't heard all that much about Evolio until this summer, when the Romanian company caught our attention with the Neura, a device it happily deemed the "most powerful Android tablet." The company has re-entered the scene with another bold claim, touting "the lightest notebook in the world." The 11.6-inch U9 is certainly on the smaller side of things, weighing in at around 2.2 pounds. Inside you'll find some rather netbooky specs, including a 1.6GHz Cedarview processor, 2GB of RAM and an SSD with either 64 or 128GB of storage. According to Evolio, the U9 is set for a December release.

Dutch Senators swap iPads for pen and paper
Members of the Dutch Senate, or upper house of parliament, returned from their summer recess to find new iPads on their desks, according to a report Tuesday. They were told they had one week left to work with paper and printed documents. Instead, they would have to learn how to use a new Senate app especially designed for the Apple devices.

Zynga announces HTML 5 games, will run on Facebook for iPad
Social game giant Zynga is holding a press conference in San Francisco right now, and the company has announced that it will be releasing a series of new games for Facebook, all built in HTML 5 rather than Flash. That's especially interesting for us iPad users, because it means that those games will show up, fully playable, inside the new Facebook for iPad app, released yesterday. Currently, the iPad app will link out to other games you have installed on the iPad (so if you click a link for Words with Friends or Zynga Poker, for example, the iPad will actually load up that game), but with these HTML 5 games,

New app BerryMover syncs BlackBerries to iPhones
PocketMac, which for years was the officially-sanctioned way to sync data between Research In Motion's BlackBerry phones and Macs, has now launched a new program for the iPhone called BerryMover ($10) that syncs contacts, text messages, e-mail, notes, calendar data and task from a BlackBerry to iTunes, where it can be copied to the iPhone and imported into the proper apps. The program uses the normal BlackBerry ".ipd" backup files for transfer.
