HP's Todd Bradley refutes webOS shutdown rumors

HP's Todd Bradley showed up on Bloomberg last night for a quick round of webOS damage control. Following a report from the The Guardian, saying the company would in fact kill the webOS division, Bradley referred to the report as an "unfounded rumor." He went on to say that "accolades for the operating system are broadly know" and that the company is focusing on how to "effectively utilize that phenomenal software." Of course, there's always a chance that the best way to utilize the troubled OS is to sell it to the highest bidder, but Bradley

iOS 5 and the TUAW iPhone app

As those of you using the free TUAW iPhone app in iOS 5 have already seen, there are a few issues with it; missing buttons, some broken functionality, et cetera. While we were expecting that the AOL team handling mobile development for us & all our sister sites would have an update ready for the iOS 5 release, that didn't happen. I was told that as of October 28, an update would be submitted to Apple. AOL has a QA process for mobile apps, and several bugs popped up once iOS 5 hit. Apple reportedly buys C3 Technologies for 3D maps

An as yet unconfirmed claim has pointed to Apple being the mystery buyer of C3 Technologies. The firm is reportedly still working out of its Swedish office and is informally known as Sputnik, 9to5 heard. CEO Mattias Astrom, CFO Jkell Cederstrand, and lead product manager Ludvig Emgard are all still said to be working, although it's not clear if anyone was let go.

Intel tries to have New York antitrust case tossed

Intel late this week motioned to dismiss a New York state antitrust lawsuit on grounds it was exceeding its bounds. The case, being heard in Delaware, supposedly didn't have the authority to get remedies for both state residents as well as 4,000 non-governmental organizations. It went on to contend that the Delaware three-year statute of limitations should apply and not New York's, ruling out any dispute earlier than November 2006 and thus cutting out many of the potential damages.

Most of them, like the one carved by Sbrocket seen above, have focused on Steve Jobs in some way, which makes sense given that everyone's still thinking about Steve and his influence. Gestern erfuhren wir, dass Richard Kerris, früherer Vizepräsident Public Developer Relations bei HP und maßgeblich an der Entwicklung von webOS beteiligt, die Fronten wechselt. Dazu passend berichtet nun die britische Tageszeitung The Guardian, dass die Schließung von HPs webOS-Abteilung unmittelbar bevorstehe. Fünfhundert Arbeitsplätze wären davon betroffen. Die ungenannte interne HP-Quelle spricht von "einer 95-prozentigen Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass wir alle zwischen heute und November entlassen werden". Panasonic GX1 leaks, promises new engine, return to high end

Panasonic's shift back to experienced photographers became apparent early Saturday after a new leak of the GX1. The details caught by Mobile01 in Taiwan had it using both a 16-megapixel sensor and a new image processing engine, the combination of which could reach ISO 12,800. Google gets ready to play traditional TV, preps original YouTube channels

From rumors to reality: YouTube is taking a crack at original programing. Sources close to the Wall Street Journal say that the streaming outfit is partnering with a broad mix of media firms, production companies, and savvy content creators to launch 100 channels, generating over 25 hours of original content each day. YouTube to announce original-content channels soon

Google is close to announcing approximately 100 new online "channels" for its YouTube service that will incorporate contributions from some media companies -- allegedly including some Hollywood production houses -- along with content from well-known online video producers for a total of about 25 hours per day of original programming, The Wall Street Journal claims. IDC: Samsung, ZTE see jump in mobile shipments, Apple slides to fifth place

Q3 earnings reports have been pouring in over the past few days, which means it's time to check in with IDC on the state of the mobile market. The research firm's latest report, released today, is something of a mixed bag. Portugal gains iTunes movie rentals

A MacNN reader has reported an announcement from Apple that iTunes movie rentals are now available in that country. While the iTunes Store has been available for music in Portugal since October of 2004, this is the first time movies have been available for rental. Prices for film rentals appear to start at 3€, or about $4.25. The country also recently got its own iBookStore at the end of September. Apple only got iTunes stores running in all EU countries last month.

Motorola in a filing on Friday said it was cutting 800 jobs in the wake of its poor summer results. The company didn't outline which divisions had been affected. It stressed that the cuts weren't related to Google's proposed acquisition of the company and were just to trim expenses.

Dear Aunt TUAW, So here's the deal. There are 8-terabyte drives on the market now which, unless you are working for a production company or shooting buckets of RAW, you are never going to use. That's just extra space, which is great! Except, what is the lifespan of those drives? Will they fail on the average user before they even get close to capacity? If so, what would you recommend for the average user as the best value? Kodak's ITC dispute with Apple, RIM to get ruling Dec. 30

Kodak saw its attempt to force Apple and RIM into settlements renewed on Friday after the ITC replaced the recently retired judge that stalled the case. Judge Thomas Pender will rule on December 30 regarding Kodak's claims that iPhone and BlackBerry technology violate imaging patents. Its ruling is preliminary and won't see a final decision until 2012, when an ITC panel decides if the verdict should be upheld.
