AvisNocturna upgrades 3D app TerraRay to v5.1
TerraRay 5.1 is an update to the affordable 3D landscape generator program from AvisNocturna, now adding new post-processing effects such as depth of field, depth tint and bloom filters as well as a new "natural erosion" tool to simulate water erosion. The app's rendering times and live preview have also been made significantly faster, with improved terrain detail, and more sample scenes and materials to work with have been added.

Yahoo data center head Scott Noteboom joins Apple
Apple has picked up the former head of Yahoo's Global Data Center Infrastructure, Scott Noteboom, according to his LinkedIn profile. Noteboom's been with Yahoo since back in 2005, but now lists his job as working at Apple as a "Distinguished Gentleman" (a well-earned title, obviously, though probably unofficial). Noteboom was instrumental in managing multiple data centers while at Yahoo, and he'll likely be doing the same type of work at the Cupertino campus, as Apple moves further up into the iCloud over the next few years.
Noteboom's hire is likely a long time coming -- Apple's been steadily building up its resources for these data centers, including

Netflix drops 800,000 subs in US, expects bleak fall
Netflix faced a tough end of the year after tough results and a more difficult fall. It lost 800,000 subscribers in the US over a combination of its price hikes for those who want to both stream and watch DVDs as well as the flip-flop on Qwikster. It ended up with 23.79 million total US customers, lower than the 24.5 million most market watchers had predicted.

Logitech Air Speaker slips, joins AirPlay mix
Logitech will soon be releasing its Air Speakers, a new sound system that features Apple's AirPlay. An inadvertent pre-release listing on Amazon UK has shown the Air Speaker, its own bookshelf-sized option. The Air Speaker incorporates a drawer that hides a dock and can take audio both over Wi-Fi from any iOS 4.2 device or later as well as over a physical link from an iPod classic or nano.

NYC Grand Central Apple Store to be ready for "Black Friday"
The huge new Apple Store that's going into the NYC Grand Central Terminal is set to be open before "Black Friday", November 25th. That's the Friday after Thanksgiving, marking the official beginning of the holiday gift-purchasing season. The Grand Central Apple Store is being built in the former location of the Metrazur restaurant and covers a 15,230 square foot expanse of very expensive retail space.

Android tops Apple with global app share of 44 percent
New research from ABI shows that Android mobile operating system surpassed Apple's iOS in the market share of downloaded mobile app downloads. During the second quarter of the year, Android saw a 44 percent market share compared to iOS' 31 percent. ABI research associate Lim Shiyang said Android's open source nature is the driving factor behind its recent success.

HTC preloads Dropbox on all new phones to trump iCloud
HTC on Monday expanded its free 5GB Dropbox plan to come with "all" its Android phones. The Facebook update revealed that all its future Android phones will come preloaded with the Dropbox app and qualify for the 5GB free plan. It had previously focused on the Rhyme and hadn't said it would preload the app.

Netflix US subscriber count drops by 800k in Q3, 21.45 million still streaming
After a tumultuous third quarter the numbers are finally in for Netflix, and as expected its price hike and Qwikster madness have cost it a few customers in the US. Currently the company is reporting a total of 23.79 million customers in the US, down from 24.59 million last quarter -- fewer than even it projected a few weeks ago. Siri being tested in jailbroken iPad 1
It's been ten days since Siri hit the scene and the virtual assistant is in the process of being torn apart by the hacking community. Siri, as it exists on the iPhone 4S, has been ported to the iPhone 4 and now the iPad 1. Developer Steven Troughton-Smith, who worked on the iPhone 4 port, has shared his progress with @jackoplane who has successfully ported the app to the iPad 1. Several images of Siri running on the tablet device document this achievement.
Unfortunately, neither the iPhone 4 nor the iPad port is fully functional at this point. Siri still needs to connect to Apple's servers to work

China Mobile already has 10m unofficial iPhone users
China Mobile chairman Wang Jianzhou disclosed at ITU World on Monday that China Mobile had over 10 million unofficial iPhone users. He hinted that Apple hadn't reached a deal for the iPhone 4S but hadn't had problems attracting users, even with full-price unlocked devices. China Unicom is the only official Chinese carrier in the country.

Smartphones see rare US slump, Android and iPhone included
Morgan Keegan analyst Tavis McCourt on Monday warned that smartphone sales may have had their first absolute decline in the US. Studying AT&T results as well as those from Verizon, he believed that smartphone shipments dropped both quarter-to-quarter and the past year. The wait for the iPhone 4S on both carriers was the main factor, McCourt said, but he also saw a significant drop in Android and other platforms over the past quarter.

10 days with iPhone 4S: a personal review
Under normal circumstances, I would not be considered a target customer for the iPhone 4S. I bought the iPhone 4 on launch day. I was not up for renewal until late November.
Because of work commitments (look for the upcoming "Taking Your iPhone 4S to the Max" co-written with fellow TUAW bloggers), I paid the early upgrade penalty and received my iPhone 4S on October 14.
I've now spent 10 focused days with the iPhone 4S, exploring onboard features for technical coverage (I probably know a little more about how to make selections and share media in the Photo app than any normal person ought). The rest of the time I've been doing what the iPhone is meant to do: place phone calls, run errands, take family pictures and so forth.

Square significantly widened the reach of its mobile payment reader hardware on Monday with a retail expansion. Apple Stores to offer in-store pickup for online orders
Apple is working to allow retail pickup of online orders, according to separate claims by MacRumors and CNET's Brian Tong. The former describes Apple's efforts as a pilot program codenamed "Sherwood," in which any product on the online store will be eligible for retail pickup. Siri Co-Founder Kittlaus leaves Apple
According to a report from AllThingsD, Siri co-founder Dag Kittlaus has left Apple to pursue his own interests. The departure was supposedly amicable and Kittlaus will use his newly-found free time to spend time with his family in Chicago and explore new entrepreneurial ideas. He reportedly left Apple right after the launch of the iPhone 4S and the debut of new and improved Siri speech recognition assistant.

Tablet component suppliers in Asia are concerned about the lack of competition in the tablet market. The iPad is the dominant player and is driving the growth in the industry. This is great now that the iPad is growing 166% year over year, but it doesn't bode well for the future when iPad sales reach their saturation point.

TSMC starts large-scale 28nm chip production
TSMC on Monday said it had started full-scale production of 28 nanometer chips. Designs that meet its criteria for Low Power (28LP), High Performance (28HP), and High Performance Low Power (28HPL) are all ready now with a High Performance Mobile Computing (HPM) due for later in the year. This version, running on a first-generation jailbroken Apple tablet, suffers from a similar problem as past non-iPhone 4S ports: it's still not talking to Apple's data servers. This means that until devs manage to get voice commands recognized and initiated, the iPad's unofficial virtual assistant will remain effectively gagged.

Dell makes XPS 14z official to take on MacBook Pro
Coming quickly on the heels of new MacBook Pros, Dell has formally launched the XPS 14z. Its system is conspicuously targeted at Apple's 13-inch notebook and uses LG's Shuriken panel tech to get a 14-inch, 1366x768 screen into the size of a 13-inch design. LG Optimus Eye: LTE smartphone renamed with a view to landing in Canada

Canon Pixma Pro-1 uses DSLR style cues, 12-ink prints
Canon started off the week by introducing a rare printer aimed squarely at pro photographers. The Pixma Pro-1 takes its looks from the DSLRs it's intended to work with, like the EOS-1D X, and focuses on producing "gallery-quality" prints both for pros and for serious hobbyists. It carries 12 inks and can put out large A3+ sized images with a wider color range, at 16 bits per color channel, that more accurately reflects the lighting and scene from the DSLR itself.

Apple silently updated its MacBook Pro line of notebooks with slightly faster processors and larger hard drives. The update bumps up the processors by a small 1 to 2 GHz and hard drives by 180 to 250 GB. Here's how each model has changed:
13" MacBook Pro base model has a 2.4 GHz processor and 500 GB hard drive, up from 2.3 GHz and 320 GB.

As far as product launches go, Dell didn't exactly rip the Band-Aid off the XPS 14z. After teasing it back in September, the company let all the specs out of the bag, but stopped short of naming a price and ship date for the US. Dear Aunt TUAW,
Maybe I'm the only one this bothers, but Apple made a big deal about their whole new notifications in iOS 5. Then one day I was playing Canabalt, and I'm up to over 15,000! My high score is 17, so my heart really starts beating as I draw in.
Suddenly I got a big pop-up on my phone alerting me that I have 20% Battery remaining. Maybe there was a glitch or something but my game kept going for about a second (maybe even a second and a half) before pausing. Obviously long enough for my poor little man to plummet to his death. I looked but couldn't find a way to set that type of notification to "banner."
Maybe even go away completely?
Please help if you know.

MacBook Pro gets quiet speed boost: faster video, processors
In an uncharacteristic early morning refresh, Apple on Monday updated the MacBook Pro. The new versions use slightly upgraded processors, up 100MHz on 13-inch models to 2.4GHz Core i5 and 2.8GHz Core i7 chips and 200MHz to 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz on 15- and 17-inch models. TSMC startet Massenproduktion von 28-nm-Chips

If you meander on down to the Mac store this morning, you'll spot some nice little spec bumps to the MacBook Pro range. For a start, you can now splash out on a faster AMD Radeon HD 6770M discrete GPU with your 15-inch or 17-inch lappie. Even better, there are some CPU improvements to be had: the 13-incher gets the option of a 2.8GHz Core i7 or a 2.4GHz Core i5 processor, instead of the 2.3GHz i5 that previously came as standard (and it also gets its HDD notched up to 500GB). Damit könnte es ganz knapp zum Jahresende eventuell noch erste Produkte auf Basis dieser Technologie geben.

Muji hat den CD-Player erfolgreich an die Wand gepappt, Song Ah Lee will die Kaffeemaschine ebenfalls dort platzieren: Mehr Platz auf der Arbeitsplatte in der Küche ist ja nur zu begrüßen. Zumal die Tasse ebenfalls in der Maschine einrastet. Wie allerdings das Kaffeepulver und das Wasser in den Black Luk gelangt, bleibt unklar. Schlimmer noch stellen wir aber die tropfende Schweinerei eim Befüllen der Tasse vor, vom zu entsorgenden Kaffeesatz ganz abgesehen. Oder wird das alles automatisch hinter der Wand erledigt? Das wiederum würde uns enorm gut gefallen.

Possible late 2011 MacBook Pro specs show modest gains
Tentative specs rumored late Sunday for the late 2011 MacBook Pro by 9to5 suggest that Apple will almost exclusively focus on the processor speed. The 15- and 17-inch models would get 200MHz bumps to the refreshed Intel Core i7, starting at 2.2GHz for the entry 15-inch system and 2.4GHz for the higher-end 15- and 17-inch systems. The 13-inch models could be a more modest update still at just a 100MHz step up to 2.4GHz and 2.8GHz for their dual Core i5 parts.

BBC iPlayer Global for iPad adds AirPlay sharing
The BBC has added AirPlay sharing for its popular Global iPlayer iPad app (free, App Store)." Version 1.2.5 of the app now allows users watch their content on a TV by pushing it to their Apple TV. The app gives users the ability to stream high quality TV programming over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

Steve Jobs bio hits Amazon Kindle, Euro iBookstore early
Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs has just gone live as an e-book ahead of its official October 24 unveiling. In unintentional irony, Steve Jobs has arrived first in the US on the Kindle rather than the iBookstore. Apple's store is already making it available in Europe (iBookstore UK).

Apple posts 'Celebrating Steve' video
Apple has posted its video of the celebration of Steve Jobs's life and accomplishments. "Celebrating Steve" is the same video broadcast to Apple employees across its retail stores on October 19, and it's available for viewing on Apple's site. The video is 81 minutes long, so none of us have had a chance to watch it yet but I know what I'm doing with the rest of my afternoon.

Previously a company-only event that led it to close stores on October 19, the 80-minute presentation was headed up by CEO Tim Cook on Apple's campus. It also includes guest presentations from Al Gore, Jonathan Ive, and others closely attached to the company.

Chromebooks now available to enterprise and education customers with a pay-once option
Google made a big splash when it revealed plans to offer Chromebooks to enterprise and education customers under a subscription model. What's not clear is how much of a splash it actually made in those markets.
