Great Siri search commands

TUAW reader Harris Rydal sent in a bunch of terrific suggestions for using Siri's built-in search features without having to do a lot of typing. These are exceptionally useful ways of taking advantage of Siri-to-Safari tasking. Sports scores - Look up the current score for in-progress games and find the team record, last game score, and the upcoming game. Say "Yahoo team name score". Rydal points out "There is a 'Yahoo' here because mobile Yahoo formats the results better than Google." Flight Times - Say "Search the web for flights from City/Airport to City/Airport". Investor: Apple once toyed with licensing Mac OS to Compaq

Tech investor and temporary Compaq CEO Ben Rosen has mentioned in a look back at Steve Jobs' life that the Apple executive at one point had considered returning the Mac to a non-exclusive. Jobs in mid-1999 had raised the prospects of putting the Mac OS on Compaq PCs as an additional choice next to Windows. Nikon D300s travels to the edge of space, survives to share the results

If you're going to go to the trouble of sending a camera to the edge of space, you might as well send one capable capable of doing the trip justice, right? That hasn't always been the case with similar DIY attempts (for obvious reasons), but the team behind the so-called Cygnus "spacecraft" decided to go all out when they sent their weather balloon / beer cooler contraption aloft this month to photograph the curvature of the Earth. In this case, going all out meant sending a Nikon D300s DSLR equipped with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens, which manged to capture some stunning pictures like the one you see above -- although some got a bit obscured by ice build-up. Apple hires Yahoo datacenter VP as 'distinguished gentleman'

A catch on Sunday has revealed that Apple has hired way Yahoo's Head of Global Data Center Infrastructure, Scott Noteboom. The GigaOM finding of his LinkedIn page showed him having taken on the unusual position of "distinguished gentleman" at the iPhone maker as of October. Grand Central Apple store may be open by Thanksgiving

A quick scoop on Saturday from 9to5 has hinted that the Grand Central Terminal Apple Store could be open in just a month. A construction worker let slip that the goal was to have the store finished and open for Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the peak of holiday shopping. Seagate, Western Digital warn of long-term drive shortages

Seagate and Western Digital both warned late this week that continued flooding in Thailand was worsening shortages. Western Digital has been the worst affected and anticipated a major hit to supply of its hard drives made in the country. Seagate's main plants were unaffected so far, but many of the smaller companies supplying parts were temporarily shut down, the company said.

Former Compaq CEO now loves his Mac

Forbes is reporting a fun story about former Compaq CEO Ben Rosen. Seems Steve Jobs and Rosen met in 1999, and Jobs tried to convince Rosen, then at Compaq, to license the Mac OS. It never happened, and Steve reportedly had second thoughts about it all anyway. Fast forward to 2007. Rosen writes Jobs a letter that says in part: "Well, after a 20-plus year interlude with that other OS (necessitated by my Compaq involvement), I thought you'd be pleased to know that for the last few years I've returned to my roots. Achtung: German satellite to crash down tonight, won't land in Germany

As if it weren't hard enough keeping your house safe from debt collectors these days, now you have something else to worry about: a falling German satellite called ROSAT. The German Aerospace Center has estimated that the hunk of decommissioned, extra-orbital metal will enter the atmosphere sometime between 7:30pm ET tonight and 1:30am ET tomorrow.
