Second hacker indicted in AT&T iPad hacking
The second of two hackers arrested over stealing iPad data this year has been formally charged in a Newark court. Andrew Auernheimer was accused of identity theft and conspiracy to get unauthorized access to a computer. Along with Daniel Spitler, who recently pleaded guilty, Auenhimer is alleged to have obtained the personal e-mail addresses and other info for about 120,000 iPad 3G users on AT&T in June of last year.

One of the front-runners for the title of the world's first 7-inch Honeycomb tablet finally has a release date, and a prospective price, but it might not make it out of the gate as the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x. Mac gets native Blu-ray movie playback through Macgo app
Developer Macgo claims to have solved one of the most common complaints about Macs by launching its simply titled Mac Blu-ray Player. The app decrypts the AACS copy protection keys itself and bypasses the need for an OS-level protection scheme to work. Although it needs an Internet connection to work, it can play most any format stored on a disc and takes advantage of both hardware graphics acceleration and NVIDIA's CUDA (on GeForce chipsets) to decode 1080p video.

Bing introduces Lasso for iPad app, does cut and paste the cowboy way
How's hog-tying search terms sound as an alternative to plain old cut and paste? Well, according to Microsoft, it sounds mighty fine. The software giant just announced Lasso, a new touch-friendly search tool for the Bing iPad app that allows you to rope in your internet queries by circling a word or phrase. Griffin, Crayola team up on ColorStudio HD for iPad
Griffin Technology and Crayola have partnered to create the Crayola ColorStudio HD for iPad which is an app (free, App Store) and accessory that lets kids draw and paint. The iMarker stylus combines the functionality of a marker, pen, crayon and paintbrush. Animated and interactive coloring pages are part of the app and react while being colored.

Analyst: iPhone 5 on Sprint very likely this year
An iPhone on Sprint is now very likely to arrive this year, Citadel Securities analyst Shing Yin said in a research note Wednesday. He didn't touch on the mounting leaks themselves but said there were several factors that made it a strong candidate. Among them were Verizon's end to unlimited data; with Sprint the only true unlimited data provider left, Apple likely wants to have a carrier that can show all its real features, Yin said.

Study reveals Apple surpasses RIM in US smartphone share
Apple is now the #2 mobile platform in the US with 26.6% market share. Apple rose 1.4 percentage points and inched past RIM which now holds 24.7% of the US market. Similar to Apple, Android also gained market share grabbing another 5.1 percentage points to climb to 38.1% market share. Rim took the biggest plunge with a loss of 4.2 percentage points. These metrics are from Comscore's latest report which monitored smarpthone usage for the three-month period ending in May 2011.
On a manufacturer basis, Apple showed the greatest gain, jumping from 7.5% to 8.7% market share. Though it's far from being the leader (Samsung is #1 with 24.8%), Apple continues to move upward while rivals like Samsung, Motorol

Facebook at its special event Wednesday brought out Skype-based video chat. Microsoft CES 2012 keynote to include public Windows 8 beta
Microsoft's CES 2012 keynote has not only been narrowed down but may give the first publicly available copy of Windows 8, both official and unofficial sources said Wednesday. CEO Steve Ballmer was confirmed to be taking the stage on the evening of January 9, unusually at Las Vegas' The Venetian hotel and not the usual Hilton Center venue. Screenshots of Facebook's Project Spartan on iPhone
Project Spartan, an HTML5-based version of Facebook, continues to move forward, according to a leak from TechCrunch. Screenshots of the web app and some inside information from the developers working on the project reveal a content-rich platform for mobile devices. The new UI modifies the current mobile Facebook site and adds in support for Games and Apps, which one developer says is working surprisingly well. The HMTL5 platform is expected to be completed by July 15th and introduced sometime between then and August 1st.

It ain't the first time Mark Zuckerberg has taken the stage to announce something, but today's shindig is resulting in "something" that's a bit more exciting for the average user. As rumored, the world's most notable VoIP service is set to become exceedingly integrated with the world's most notable social network. Skype has just thrown up a teaser page for v5.3 for Windows (and v5.5 Beta), noting that Skype and Facebook will aim to provide "the best of both worlds."

Google Maps 5.7 for Android brings Transit Navigation beta, updated access to directions
Good news, jetsetters -- those of you relying on Google Maps Navigation will now find it even harder to wean yourself off of it. Not like we'd ever recommend that, though. WWDC Interview: LithiumCorp

Spotify coming to the U.S.
Spotify, the streaming music service that is well-known is Europe, is finally coming to the U.S. There's no word on a time frame, but a signup page for Spotify invites is now available for U.S. residents.
We knew this was not far off as Spotify reportedly signed a deal with Sony back in January.

iPad makes up one percent of global web browsing, magic
This is surely the sort of thing Apple likes to see -- it might not be the prettiest graph in the world, but it certainly drives home the fairly consistent growth of the iPad's global web browsing share. Back in April of last year, we reported that the company's "magical" tablet had nabbed 0.03 percent of global web traffic in its first week. Briefly: FoneSync for HTC released, Apple TV carrying case
nova media has released its latest syncing application for the Mac, FoneSync for HTC. The software allows users to synchronize contacts, calendars, music, videos, photos, and events between OS X and HTC devices running Android OS. All synchronizing is performed via a direct USB connection, meaning no additional cloud or Internet based service is required. Nielsen: games dominate mobile apps, iOS more used for play
A fresh Nielsen study has back views that gaming was not only leading in smartphone apps but was increasingly an iOS-specific trend. About 64 percent of mobile app downloaders had picked up games, and 93 percent of those willing to pay for an app would do so for a game. Weather and social networking were the next most popular among all apps, but few explicitly wanted to pay for them.

TUAW's Daily iPad App: Cargo Runners
Trouble Brothers is a company run by developers Jeff McCord and Steve Shippert, and when I saw them back at Macworld earlier this year, they showed me a game they were working on called Cargo Runners, destined to be released on the iPad, along with an actual real-life board game version. It doesn't seem like the board game version has arrived yet, but the iPad version is out now and available for $4.99 on the App Store.

Ah. You speak of the hidden drag-to-reveal logo. Actually, that's super-easy to do. Just remember that you can add subviews to scroll views and place them in that magic elastic zone at the top.
Take tables for example. Lots of devs now add "pull-to-refresh" feature to the top, similar to Apple's logo. As with the scrollview, make sure to set the origin above the normal start, i.e. use negative numbers of at least the size of whatever view you add.

Spotify partners with Virgin Media to stream music to UK TVs, smartphones
Spotify, the Rhapsody of Europe, may still be an unfamiliar brand stateside, but the service just inked a deal with Virgin Media to bring streaming music to Virgin's broadband customers, set-top boxes, and mobile phones in the UK. Nintendo breaks rank, makes Pokemon game for iPhone
Nintendo has done something out of the ordinary and created an app for the Apple App Store and Android Market. The app is a game called Pokémon Say Tap? BW and will be the first official Pokemon game available on hardware other than Nintendo's own. WSJ: Apple prepping thinner, lighter, complicated iPhone 5
The Wall Street chimed in with its insider information on the rumored iPhone 5. According to the report, Apple's next generation iPhone will be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4. It also may include an 8-megapixel camera which is a nice boost from the 5-megapixel shooter on the current model.

We won't lie: we love us a heartwarming story about scientists using run-of-the-mill tech to help people with disabilities, especially when the results are decidedly bionic. Former Apple supplier exec pleads guilty to leaking iPhone details
Former Flextronics employee Walter Shimoon pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and security fraud. Shimoon leaked information about upcoming Apple products to hedge fund traders in late 2009. He is one of 11 people who have admitted their guilt after the government's crackdown on insider trading.
Mr Shimoon and the others were industry experts who worked with Wall Street analysts and managers. The government alleges this relationship got too cozy and the information shared between the two groups crossed the line from "permissible market research" to insider trading.

Last week, Microsoft quietly confirmed that cloud data stored on its European servers can still be handed over to American investigators -- and the EU is none too pleased about it. Apple granted a trademark for the word 280
Apple received a trademark for the word 280 and the icon for its iOS navigation app. The trademark application was filed in April 2010 and granted on June 28, 2011. "280", for those who are wondering, refers to Route 280 which runs next to Apple's campus at One Infinite Loop in Cupertino.
The granting of this trademark gives Apple ownership of the word and its icon. Any mapping or navigation company using a similar logo or the word 280 to identify their application may want to hire a graphics designer to do a redesign as soon as possible.

Leaks have iPhone 5 thinner and lighter, tough to make
New hints have emerged that the next iPhone has a genuinely new design but may also be facing complications as a result. Suppliers said Wednesday that the new phone is "thinner and lighter" even as it carries a new eight-megapixel camera. TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Battle Slugs
Battle Slugs is essentially a stylized version of the old Chinese game Go. You start with two different colors of playing pieces which jump around the board in different ways. Jump one space to produce a cloned slug or two spaces to move the slug you're controlling. When you land next to a piece of the opposite color, it changes color.
Those are basically the only rules, but like Go, the strategy gets complicated quickly. You want to try and claim space on the board (the one you're playing at least -- there are 25 different levels in the game), but you have to do so carefully, because overextending can make trouble quickly. The game's actually pretty hard -- I had trouble mastering even the first level consistently.

Smartphone-Marktanteile: iOS überholt BlackBerry OS
ComScore hat eine neue Übersicht der Marktanteile für den US-amerikanischen Smartphone-Markt veröffentlicht. Im abgelaufenen Quartal konnte Googles Android seinen Marktanteil am weitesten ausbauen und die Marktführerschaft mit 38,1 Prozent festigen. Noch ist es kein Problem, das eigene Google+-Profil auf privat zu stellen und damit zu verhindern, dass man gesucht werden kann, aber damit soll bald Schluß sein: ab dem 31. Juli will Google nämlich alle Accounts, die auf privat gestellt wurden, schlicht und ergreifend löschen. Die Begründung: weil es besser ist. 15-year-old sets new record for typing on an iPad
Eduard Saakashvili, the 15-year-old son of the president of the country of Georgia, has been awarded a Guinness Book of World Records certification as the fastest typist on an iPad, correctly typing the entire English alphabet in just 5.26 seconds -- with one hand, Cult of Mac reports. The record was set at a resort on the Black Sea often used for high-level diplomatic conferences, and beat the previous record by over a second.

Carrying your Apple TV in style
I'm not sure why you need to haul your Apple TV around (though it might work if you spend a lot of time in hotels, or traveling between two houses, which is certainly a possibility), but if you do find yourself moving Apple's set-top box often, you might as well do it in style, right? For that reason, there's this custom-fitted WaterField case, which has everything you need to move the new Apple TV from place to place, and look really good while doing it. It's $45, which isn't all that cheap, but if you've ever used a WaterField case, you know it's probably worth the price anyway.

Facebook's Project Spartan for iOS to hit before August 1
Facebook's Project Spartan web app platform for iOS has been spied in greater detail Tuesday night and given a tentative release date. The HTML5-based system is now known to have a "chrome" navigation page but to actually rely on outside hosting for the apps themselves. Games and other titles have to call on the central chrome not just to give users an easy way to stay in Facebook, TechCrunch says, but to get the social network's wrapper for alerts, automatically login, and carry in other common elements.

HP exec Jon Rubenstein compares webOS to early Mac OS X
Like most non-iPad tablets, HP's TouchPad has faced lukewarm reviews thus far. Most reviews have dinged the device for being laggy and not having enough apps, though a few reviewers have admitted the webOS-powered device does seem to have potential that tablets like RIM's PlayBook seem to lack.

Another iPad leak source pleads guilty
One-time Flextronics development head Walter Shimoon on Tuesday pled guilty to leaking iPad trade secrets and others. In return for a lighter penalty, the former executive admitted to passing along information about Apple's plans to at least Broadband Research and is believed to have sent on information to a minimum of ten other hedge funds. Shimoon will be convicted of conspiracy and securities fraud but won't learn his exact sentence until 2013.

Steve Jobs biography gets new title: 'Steve Jobs'
"iSteve: The Book of Jobs" was the title originally ascribed to the very first authorized biography of Apple's head honcho, written and put together by Walter Isaacson. But according to CNNMoney, the title has changed. While the book's Amazon page now lists the title as the much more tame, "Steve Jobs: A Biography," apparently it's even simpler than that. Steve Jobs biography to get new, simpler title
The forthcoming biography of Steve Jobs, the first to be done with the Apple CEO's cooperation, has changed its projected title. Initial publicity had revealed that the book was to be called iSteve: The Book of Jobs, but author Walter Isaacson has told Fortune's Philip Elmer-Dewitt that he was never too sure about it, with the result being that the title has now officially changed to simply Steve Jobs.

Foursquare intros rare Android-first feature

New lawsuit accuses Missouri Apple Store of race bias
A new lawsuit has been filed against Apple and a senior store manager in St. Louis, Missouri, accusing the store of failing to promote an employee with otherwise high marks due to racial and gender discrimination, as well as retaliation when complaints were made. Although the store does have other African-American workers, the plaintiff claims that only eight of 100 store employees are black, and that none of them have been offered management-level positions.

Court tells Apple August 5 hearing on Samsung ban too early
Judge Lucy Koh told Apple in a weekend hearing that its request for a preliminary ban on Samsung devices might be too quick. The iPhone maker had suggested a hearing on the afternoon of August 5 but was told that the timing might not give either side enough time for discovery to prove or disprove the need for a ban. Both have until July 8 to provide a joint statement either agreeing on a schedule or explaining their views if they disagree.

Microsoft, Baidu strike China search deal
When it wanted to increase its search market share in the US, Microsoft sought out a partnership, resulting in a Yahoo-branded engine with Bing-flavored results. So, it seems natural that the company would look for a similar deal in China, the world's largest market, where the company only manages a presence of around one-percent of search. This time, however, Microsoft's managed a deal with the number one search engine, Baidu, which currently lays claim to three-quarters of the Chinese market -- far greater than Google's 20-percent or so.
