Farmville comes to the iPad
Zynga, the game powerhouse behind many successful Facebook and now iOS games, has launched its mega-popular Farmville strategy game as its first app for the iPad. The company has updated its existing free Farmville iPhone/iPod Touch app to be truly universal, creating new layouts, custom graphics and new gesture controls for the iPad "HD" edition. Users can tend to farms on any of Apple's mobile iOS devices, as well as through the web.

Flash plugin absence on MacBook Air was deliberate, says Apple
Several of the folks lucky enough to get their hands on new MacBook Air review units noticed something a little strange: the Adobe Flash Player, usually bundled as a browser plugin with new Mac OS X installations, was AWOL. It wasn't clear at first if this was an early-build hiccup or a design decision; although Apple has been dinged in the past for shipping out-of-date versions of Flash Player, it hadn't stopped bundling the plugin. I confirmed today that shipping units and Apple retail store models were also Flash-less.

Dell Venue Pro gets Expansys listing: £499.99 for November 8th
Don't take this as the gospel, but online retailer Expansys has gone ahead and listed Dell's Venue Pro -- affectionately known as "the Windows Phone 7 device with a portrait QWERTY slider" -- with pricing and availability date in tow. Which, if you're wondering, is £499.99 (or about $783 in US dollars, when crudely converted) and Monday, November 8th, respectively. That's just over two weeks away, which means if it is true, you won't have long to wait and if it's not true, you'll know soon enough, anyway.

Review: Adobe Dreamweaver CS5
MacNN has reviewed Dreamweaver CS5, Adobe's professional web design software. The program supports recent standards such as HTML5 and CSS3, and can also output to a number of other web-related formats such as ColdFusion, JavaScript and XML. It's described as having a "powerful" PHP scripting environment in fact, and being generally reliable in terms of rendering.

Amazon announces 14-day lending feature for Kindle books, newspapers and magazines for Kindle apps
Nook users can already lend ebooks they've purchased to others, and it looks like Kindle users will soon be able to do the same. Amazon has just announced that it will be offering a similar feature "later this year" that will let folks lend books they've purchased to other Kindle users for a 14-day period, during which the person that actually purchased the book won't be able to read it themselves. That feature won't be available for all ebooks, however, as it will be up to individual publishers and rights holders to enable it for a particular book. Google says Street View scraped passwords, tightens privacy
Google today warned that its accidental collection of Wi-Fi data with Street View cars collected more than it thought and was triggering a privacy overhaul. Senior Engineering and Research VP Alan Eustace admitted that investigations in Europe and elsewhere contained whole e-mail messages, web addresses and in some cases passwords. Google will delete the information as soon as it's legally cleared, the executive said.

App Review: Pentago is a twisty strategy game with legs
The ideas behind the two-player abstract strategy game Pentago are about as old as any abstract strategy games we can think of. If Connect 4 is an evolution of tic-tac-toe, then Pentago is an evolution of Connect 4. There's also a bit of Reversi/Othello in the game, with enough of a twist (and I use the term advisedly) to make it different.
The game designed by Tomas Flodén and was first released IRL in 2005 in Sweden and has received two Game of The Year awards (2005 in Sweden and 2006 in France) and was also named a Mensa Mind Games selection in 2006.

Seagate downplays SSD in MacBook Air, says hybrid the future
Seagate chief Steve Luczo talked down the effect of the new MacBook Air's all-SSD mix this week in a question and answer session following its latest results. He acknowledged that the designs would be "obviously pretty competing" but noted that SSDs were still in the minority at Apple, which he estimated sold just five percent or less of its Macs with flash storage. He also reiterated common problems with SSDs, such as their high prices, low capacities and tendency to bog down over time as they fill up and lose efficiency.

TechRestore offers MacBook Air matte screen replacements for $249
The new MacBook Airs may have a lot of things going for them, but a matte screen unfortunately isn't among them. The folks at TechRestore now say they have a solution to that shortcoming, however, and will gladly rip apart your shiny new Air and install a matte screen for $249. That screen will supposedly give you the same resolution, color depth and LED-backlighting as the factory installed one, and TechRestore promises to install a custom black bezel that "matches the look of the unibody MacBook Pro systems and looks, well, pretty awesome." Apple: Flash pulled from Air to ensure latest version
Apple has issued an official explanation for the absence of Flash on the 2010 MacBook Air, which was launched on Wednesday. "We're happy to continue to support Flash on the Mac, and the best way for users to always have the most up to date and secure version is to download it directly from Adobe," says Apple spokesman Bill Evans. He adds that all future Macs will go without Flash pre-installed, although some models currently in production should still carry it.

Atheros puts out powerline, Wi-Fi router combos
Atheros Communications will release three hybrid home networking hardware designs that use Wi-Fi, powerline and Ethernet connections. These are said to extend both range and bandwidth of home networks, and include a mix of Atheros chips and Intellon's, which was bought by Atheros in the fall of last year. Intellon makes powerline chips, while Atheros is known for Wi-Fi hardware.

Speedlink Cue does the multitouch hybrid mouse thing
Honestly, while Apple's Magic Mouse is a bit of a pioneer in its application of a multitouch surface on a "regular" tracking mouse, it's not exactly easy or comfortable to perform multitouch gestures with it. Plus there's the little problem of no official driver for Windows. Speedlink's Cue mouse looks to be solving at least one of those problems, maybe even both. The wireless 1000 dpi optical mouse is naturally PC-compatible, with software to allow you to configure your own gestures, and it has a somewhat flatter and more extensive touch surface than the Magic Mouse, which might make gestures a bit more doable. The current-generation 8GB iPod nano is available in green, black, pink, purple, yellow, blue and silver for only $99, a $50 reduction from the original price of $149. WaterField cases are another reason to buy a new MacBook Air
I need a new MacBook Air like I need a third eye (in other words, I don't need one), but when the first press release we received after the announcement on Wednesday was about some MacBook Air cases from WaterField Designs, I could feel my resolve slipping rapidly.
This company is based in San Francisco (Go Giants!) and is known for making nice looking and rugged cases for a variety of devices. Android 2.3 'next major release,' says anonymous Google engineer
Who knew a support thread on corporate WiFi login issues would lead to anything we'd care about? Cut to Google code's Android forums, where an anonymous Google engineer confirms that this problem will be patched in the "next major release" of Android, specifically version 2.3. So does this mean Android 2.3 is the oft-discussed (and close on the horizon) Gingerbread? Garmin, ASUS split seen in January after failed iPhone fight
Garmin and ASUS aren't likely to keep up their partnership past the start of the year, observers noted on Friday. Taiwan's Economic Daily News understood that the alliance is due to end in January and will likely see both companies split rather than renew their plans. The first Presidential iPad autograph?
At a recent rally at the University of Washington in Seattle, President Obama signed a well-wisher's iPad. As far as we know, this is the first presidential autograph captured with an iPad.
Sylvester Cann attended the rally with Adobe Ideas running on his iPad. He tells TechCrunch that at first the Secret Service were hesitant, but eventually relented, while the President thought the idea was "cool." He proceeded to "draw" his signature with is finger.
Autograph collection is a fun pastime for many, and Mr. Cann certainly has a unique one.

AT&T transitioning to LTE-friendly SIM cards
There's precisely zero doubt that AT&T will be supporting LTE waves in the not-too-distant future, but it looks as if "the future" may be drawing closer than anyone had ever imagined. Mac Box Set updates with iLife '11
Apple has added the iLife '11 suite -- released just Wednesday -- to Mac Box Set offerings available at the online Apple store, and various other outlets such as Amazon. Timeline tweak returns iMovie '11 to old school
iMovie '11 makes it easy to regain the traditional horizontal timeline that was lost with iMovie '06, to the delight of many.
When Apple released iMovie '08 in August of 2007, many users were upset by the decision to move the timeline from the bottom of the app's window to the upper left-hand corner. The outcry was so loud that Apple made iMovie '06 available for download.
Now, version '11 lets you put a vertical timeline back in place. As TidBITS explains, it's a simple as swapping the Events and Projects browsers. Yes, you can make that swap in iMovie '08 and '09, but this is the first time it will result in a horizontal timeline.

AT&T switching to 4G-ready SIM cards
AT&T's plans to roll out a 4G network in 2011 are well underway, judging by this leaked internal memo. Apple Store demands result in overhauled Chicago plaza
The construction of the Lincoln Park Apple Store, opening tomorrow, has resulted in some major changes to its surrounding area, the Chicago Tribune writes. Apple paid about $3.9 million to help refurbish the nearby North/Clybourn transit station, which the Tribune claims was "so dingy" that Red Line riders would deliberately get off at a nearby stop to avoid it. Apple seen shipping 700,000 MacBook Airs, 11-inch the leader
Apple's new MacBook Air should ship in some of its highest volumes ever based on an analyst note from Concord Securities (and former Digitimes Research) analyst Mingchi Kuo. Of the 4.1 million Macs he estimated would ship in the fall, about 700,000, or 17 percent, would be the ultraportables. Of those, about 420,000 would be the 11-inch model, he said, suggesting confidence that buyers would be willing to trade speed for price and size.

Analyst: Apple will sell 700K MacBook Airs
DigiTimes has the details (and translation) on a Chinese-language Commercial Times report suggesting that Apple will sell 700,000 MacBook Air laptops during the upcoming quarter.
Commercial Times cites vice president of Concord Securities Research Mingchi Kuo as predicting the impressive sales numbers. Kuo believes that the MacBook Air, especially the 11.6-inch model, will make a compelling choice as a second computer for many. Kuo also believes that the appeal of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will further spur sales.
Kuo formerly worked with DigiTimes and was the one to break Apple's intentions to build an 11.6-inch laptop

Sony pulls the plug on cassette Walkmans in Japan, makes epic mixtape
A cassette Walkman may now be nothing more than a puzzling artifact to some, but for those of a certain age it was the gadget of the day. Alas, it has long since been surpassed by other, more portable audio players that have replaced the fine art of the mixtape with "playlists," and it looks like even Sony has now accepted the inevitable. The company has reportedly ceased production of all cassette Walkmans and will stop selling them in Japan as soon as the current inventory runs out (expected to happen sometime in April). BetterZip Quick Look Generator shows contents of archive files
In response to an article about Archive Utility's preferences, a reader asked if there was a way to show the contents of an archived file. I used to have a QuickLook plugin for this, but it stopped working at some point and I had never gotten around to finding a new one.

Verizon adds fewer customers than AT&T in Q3, race for first place gets tight
By subscriber count, Verizon had vaulted into first place by a pretty comfortable margin following its Alltel acquisition, but AT&T added significantly more customers this last quarter than Big Red did -- and just like that, the battle for first place among the US national carriers is starting to get hot again. Verizon added 997,000 customers (excluding acquisitions) in the July through September period versus AT&T's beefy 2.6 million, meaning AT&T now stands at some 92.8 million -- just 400,000 or so fewer that Verizon's headcount. Apple responds on missing Flash in new MacBook Airs, says get used to it
The other day, we reported on the fact that those tiny new MacBook Airs are shipping without a pre-installed version of Flash. Based on Apple's recent, vocal anti-Flash opinions, we took it as a sign that the company was putting even more distance between itself and Adobe, but according to a statement we've just received, that might not be the case. Apple spokesman Bill Evans just pinged us with the official word on the situation, claiming that it has more to do with making sure users have the most recent version of the software and less to do with politics. iPhone officially leaps BlackBerry for no. 2 in smartphones
Apple's 14.1 million iPhones were enough for it to comfortably jump over the BlackBerry for market share, Strategy Analytics found today. With an estimated 77.1 million smartphones moved in the summer, the iPhone leapt to 18.3 percent of the market, pushing RIM's 12.1 million down to 16.1 percent. Nokia's 26.5 million kept it out front but also gave it one of the biggest share drops of recent memory, sagging from 37.8 percent to 34.4 percent.

Japans Automaten: Nun auch mit lebenden Krebsen
Es gibt wahrlich nichts in Japan, was es nicht auch in Automaten zu kaufen gäbe. Bananen, Unterwäsche, Hamburger etc.pp. Der nächste Hammer dürfte Gourmets allerdings besonders freuen. Denn nun kann man auch lebende Krebse für das Abendessen ziehen. Lecker. Nein, praktisch oder mobil ist dieser PC-Mod bei weitem nicht, dafür ziemlich üppig und aufwendig gehalten. Dieser russische Modder hat es scheinbar mit den alten Cyberpunk-Mythen und hat sich eine große Station direkt neben die Heizung gebaut. Da sehen wir Verbesserungsbedarf, weil so richtig zur Geltung kommt der Mod dort nämlich nicht. Dennoch ein vor Details strotzendes Gedöns.

Jobs: Java switchup stems from timing issues with Oracle
Apple's decision to deprecate its Java runtime was based on scheduling problems, an e-mail from Steve Jobs to a developer reveals. "Sun (now Oracle) supplies Java for all other platforms," the CEO writes. Verizon adds less than 1m customers, draws even with AT&T
Verizon today reported slower growth than usual in a sign that Android's effect was muted at the carrier. It added a modest 997,000 cellphone customers during the summer compared to AT&T's 2.6 million and was enough to put the two carriers' total bases nearly even, with Verizon just holding a lead at 93.2 million phone users versus AT&T's 92.8 million. Verizon's main advantage was lower turnover of old subscription customers for new, at 1.07 percent.

Apple blockiert nämlich den Gebrauch von Universal und Paramount in seinen Trailern, wenn auch absurderweise die passenden Grafiken (Globus und Berg) zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Sobald man allerdings Universal oder eben Paramount eingibt werden die Buchstaben just in Bindestriche umgewandelt. New androgynous International Docking System Standard Interface works both ways in space

Recently, in the interest of sleeping soundly through the night, I've been turning off my 27" iMac every night. No, I'm not doing this for energy conservation, but the darned thing used to light up at random intervals in the middle of the night. Dell trumps Apple in recycling report card
Dell provided a surprise today by beating green advocate Apple in a report card for electronics recycling from the Electronics TakeBack Coalition. The Texas PC builder earned the highest grade, B, as it not only took back every product through the mail for free but had a widening network that included Goodwill and Staples. IBM: Weihnachtsgeschäft beginnt in diesem Jahr früher
IBM prognostiziert, dass das Weihnachtsgeschäft in den USA dieses Jahr schon im November für erhöhte Umsätze sorgen wird. Heimelektronik und Elektrogeräte (etwa Kühlschränke, Föns und Spülmaschinen) sollen in diesem Monat für 10,1 Milliarden Dollar Umsatz sorgen. Das wären vier Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. iPads join tongue depressors and latex gloves as a hospital fixture
The next time you visit a hospital or medical clinic for a routine check or emergency, don't be surprised if the doctor shows up with an iPad in hand.
The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that in several Windy City hospitals, the iPad is making inroads in a big way. The Loyola University Medical Center has given Apple's tablet to all of its orthopedic residents as a pilot program, while the University of Chicago Medical Center is expanding an existing pilot by providing iPads to all of their internal medicine residents.

PARADIGM: Europa drängt auf Dominanz bei optischen Chips

Optische Chips sollen vor allem erst man die Netzwerkknoten entlasten, denn dort wird es mit rasant steigendem Netzwerktraffic langsam eng. Mit dem PARADIGM Projekt abreiten jetzt 16 europäische Partner daran die Produktion von Optischen Chips zu standardisieren um die Kosten ins erträgliche zu senken. 13 Millionen Euro pumpt die EU deshalb in die Entwicklung und erwartet einen Milliardenmarkt. Der oben abgebildete optische Chip ist übrigens 4,5 x 5,5 Millimeter groß.

Apple: Merging Mobile and Mac (plus iLife 11)
Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") will merge iOS with Mac OS X, with Apple introducing a new Mac application store, just like the iTunes App Store for iOS devices. Lion will also integrate multi-touch control and move to a new user interface like the iPad's. Lion is due for release next summer, but the Mac App Store will debut on Snow Leopard within 90 days. iLife 11 debuts today at $49, adding a number of new features to iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand. A hi-res 13.3-inch MacBook Air comes from crossing an iPad and previous MacBook Air design, sporting a Core 2 Duo processor and solid-state storage. The 11.6-inch model starts at $999, while the top-end 13.3-inch model is $1599.

News Corp dropping own tablet newsstand, still interested
News Corp was alleged on Friday to have scrapped plans for a news aggregation service that would have targeted the web and tablets, including the iPad. Nicknamed Project Alesia, it was supposedly "weeks" away from launch but was considered too expensive to run. A Brand Republic source believed that the British-based project cost £20 million ($31.4 million) to get started and would have had another £1 million ($1.6 million) set aside for marketing.

We'll start with the obvious: Samurai II: Vengeance is one of the best, if not the best, looking games I've ever seen on the iPhone. It is simply gorgeous, with a unique, cel-shaded look filling out incredible 3D worlds. I'm excited for Epic Citadel's progeny, of course, but this one's in a class all its own in terms of the graphics. It's just amazing.

iFixit nimmt MacBook Air auseinander: SSD austauschbar, RAM nicht
Wer sich mit dem Gedanken trägt ein MacBook Air zu kaufen sollte beim Kauf direkt darauf achten wie viel RAM er sich besorgt, denn der ist, wie iFixit im üblichen Teardown zeigt, nicht austauschbar. Wer es schafft die sehr eigenwillige Schraube auf der Rückseite zu umgehen, kann dafür aber wenigstens im Nachhinein die SSD Flash Platte austauschen. iLife ‘11: weiterhin 32 Bit, keine Fotokalender mehr
iPhoto ‘11, iMovie ‘11 und GarageBand ‘11 liegen offenbar weiterhin nur als 32-Bit-Programme vor. Dies berichtet Gear Live. Im Vorfeld der iLife-‘11-Vorstellung war allgemein erwartet worden, dass Apple den Schritt auf 64-Bit-Software wohl auch bei seiner Multimedia-Suite allmählich vornehmen würde. Ein möglicher (und sehr wahrscheinlicher) Grund für den Verzicht auf 64 Bit ist der rege Gebrauch der QuickTime-API durch die iLife-Programme. Zwar bietet Apple seit Snow Leopard mit QuickTime X eine 64-Bit-Cocoa-API an, dieser fehlen derzeit aber noch zahlreiche Funktionen der älteren QuickTime-Schnittstelle, welche nur 32 Bit unterstützt. Eine andere Erklärung wäre, dass Apple schlicht den Aufwand gescheut hat, grosse Teile der iLife-Suite umzuschreiben. Dies wäre für eine Umstellung auf 64 Bit aber zwingend nötig, da iLife noch regen Gebrauch der nicht 64-Bit-kompatiblen Carbon-Schnittstelle macht.
Aus Anwendersicht ist die Frage nach 32 oder 64 Bit bei den iLife-Applikationen aber ohnehin nebensächli

So richtig interessant machen erst die Anwendungen aus dem App Store die iOS-Geräte. 63 Prozent der iPad-Nutzer haben bereits bezahlte Apps heruntergeladen. iMovie blocks studio names in new trailers
Perhaps its testament to the quality of the iMovie '11 trailers that Apple is blocking the use of big name studios in the titles. Ironic since Apple provides templates that ape the Paramount snow-capped mountain (pictured after the break) and familiar Universal Studios globe. So don't try to enter those studio names into the title sequence -- the words "Paramount" and "Universal" will be replaced with hyphens. We suspect other studios are affected as well. BusyCal Info Panel Preferences give you more event options
BusyCal is what iCal should have been. It continues to impress me the longer I use it, and recently I found a way to customize it that I did not know about previously.
Event details, like the one shown in the image here, can be customized from a much larger list than what BusyCal shows you by default. To access the Info Panel Preferences, click the small white "i" at the top right of the Event Info panel. (See item #1 in the image here. Note that you can only access these when the panel is floating on its own, not from the BusyCal sidebar.)
There are 18 different fields that you can use, and most of them are self explanatory (you can see an image in the gallery below), but I want to draw your attention to a few that I find very helpful. The first is "my URL"

Hulu Plus dropping to $4.95 per month? That's what she said.
It's only rumor for now, but Peter Kafka over at All Things D has sources telling him that the ABC/NBC/FOX-owned Hulu Plus video site is looking to cut its $9.95 per month subscription fee in halfish to $4.95, perhaps in a bid to increase subscriber count. If so that would drop it well below the $8.95 per month fee paid by Netflix subscribers. A price drop certainly wouldn't surprise us knowing that content owners are still experimenting with pricing in the brave new world we call the internet.

Apple promptly fixes Facetime for Mac beta security flaw
Appleís new FaceTime for Mac beta launch has been marred by an embarrassing security flaw that has been promptly patched server-side. German site MacNotes spotted the flaw and noted that once a user logged into FaceTime for the first time, another user could log into the primary userís account even with the app closed and then restarted. Flickr Find: Juno's Hamburger iPhone
It's been a couple of years now, but remember the hit movie Juno, and the main character's hamburger-styled telephone? That phone made a splash with fans of kitschy art, and Flickr user Karen apparently decided to take the idea and run with it on her 3G iPhone. She's posted a nice gallery of pictures on how to give her iPhone a hamburger-style case, building out foam and plastic molds around a DVD flipcase.
In the end, the prop looks pretty excellent, even if it doesn't quite work exactly the same as the phone in the movie does. But it's a cool project nonetheless. And the graphic on the iPhone is pretty funny, too.

FaceTime wieder dicht: Computer rumstehen lassen trotzdem eine blöde Idee
FaceTime hatte ja für kurze Zeit ein "Sicherheitsloch". Man konnte in der Applikation den iTunes Account nebst Sicherheitsfragen sehen, wenn man an den Rechner von jemand anders gelangt. Das ist vorbei und völlig ohne FaceTime-Update. Wer jetzt auf den eigenen Account clickt kommt einfach wieder zurück. Die größere Sicherheitslücke, dass jemand den Rechner einfach mitnimmt wenn man ihn stehen lässt, ist allerdings nicht geschlossen. Permalink |

Mac OS X Lion: Details zu Interface-Änderungen, keine Java-Unterstützung
Bei der ersten Vorstellung von Mac OS X Lion hielt sich Apple am Mittwoch ziemlich bedeckt. Steve Jobs nannte einige der neuen Funktionen und liess Craig Federighi einige davon (eigentlich nur Launch Pad und Mission Control) in einer kurzen Demo vorführen. AppleInsider hat das spärliche Bildmaterial analysiert und ist auf einige Detailneuerungen gestossen, die Apple nicht explizit erwähnt hat. Dazu zählen Änderungen an der Oberfläche von Mail und iCal. Mail in Mac OS X Lion kommt schlichter daher als noch in Snow Leopard, die Buttons in der Symbolleiste sind nun eckiger in der Form und linksbündig angeordnet. Ausserdem setzt Apple wie schon bei der iTunes-Oberfläche vermehrt auf Grautöne anstatt auf bunte Buttons. iCal scheint neue Buttons zum Durchblättern der Kalender zu besitzen, ausserdem scheint Apple eine Jahresansicht integriert zu haben.

The FaceTime for Mac beta security flaw has been shutdown by Apple on the backend -- a flaw that allowed anyone with physical access to your machine to reset and grab your iTunes Store account password and security answers. Amazon meldet Umsatzsteigerung von 39 Prozent

FaceTime security flaw fixed
Our own Dave Caolo suggested FaceTime's widely publicized security flaw would be easily fixed, and it turns out he was right. Initially, FaceTime allowed users with physical access to a machine to edit a user's information without first having to enter a password. According to Cocoa Touch Apps, Apple's already patched this hole with a server-side workaround. I verified this myself: instead of giving anyone and everyone in front of your Mac access to your Apple-related info, clicking "View Account" in FaceTime now does precisely nothing. It just kicks you back to the account preferences tab.

Nächste Woche kommt Rock Band 3 und mit der Fender Mustang Pro steht auch schon ein Controller, der sich wirklich sehen lassen kann. Selbst im Vergleich mit einer Stratocaster. Facebook disabled iPad mobile Safari zooming?
I noticed it first a few days ago. Then people started emailing me about it. Now it's gaining increased mention on Twitter and the rest of the net: when you go to Facebook.com on your iPad you can no longer use the pinch and zoom features of iPad's mobile Safari web browser on the site.
Reader Stephen F. noted in an email to me that when you go to Facebook on an iPad this line of code appears: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0; user-scalable=0;" />
It's the user-scalable=0 part that disables zooming on the iPad. Stephen also pointed out that you can test this by changing the user agent on your web browser

Official Kinect TV ads feature smiling actors, very large rooms, little else (video)
If you're a fan of videos featuring commercial actors mugging for the camera and jumping around in a semi-comical manner, you are seriously in luck. That's right, it looks like Ballmer and Co.'s $500 million marketing blitz has resulted in some totally spasmodic TV spots for the Kinect. iMovie '11 prohibits users from adding official studio names
Apple appears to have placed restrictions on using official studio names to create trailers for movies produced in iMovie '11. When using the Trailers theme with an image of the earth, which looks very similar to the official Universal Studios logo, the software prevents users from placing the word "universal" in the studio name. The word is instead replaced with several hyphens.

A reader just emailed us to point out a post I wrote this past April. MacStories.net had published an email a developer at Chiaro Software had sent Steve Jobs to ask him if the rumors of a Mac App Store and no software running on OS X without authorization from Apple were true. Job's answer? "Nope."
Yesterday's Mac App Store announcement puts a different spin on that response. Jobs sent the "nope" email in late April. It's unrealistic to think that Apple had no plans for a Mac App Store at that time -- I mean, it was less than six months ago.

iFixit tears down the 11-inch MacBook Air
Less than a day after the new 11-inch MacBook Air hit shelves, iFixit's already dissected it. The repair site gave the new MacBook Air a repairability rating of 4/10, with 10 being easiest to repair. Two major obstacles face any user trying to do their own repairs on the MacBook Air. HP confirms launch details for Slate 500 tablet
HP has finally confirmed launch information and specs for its forthcoming Slate 500 tablet, which has already been detailed in several recent leaks. As expected, the Windows 7 device will be powered by Intel's 1.86GHz Atom Z540 processor and Graphics Media Accelerator 500 chip. Google TV blocked by TV studios over piracy concerns
Google TV is being blocked by TV studios at least partly out of piracy fears, tips alleged on Thursday [sub. required]. Disney's ABC as well as CBS have all confirmed that they prevent the TV OS from watching their free Flash video sites. The WSJ understood from leaks that at least Disney and NBC had objected because it didn't think Google was doing enough to stop piracy.

Rovio Mobile passing on Chillingo in the future

Boeing installs 50Mbps eXConnect broadband on 737
Cathay Pacific has already promised that it would bring 50Mbps in-flight broadband to some of its fleet by 2012, but it looks like Boeing has beat it to the punch to become the first to actually take the service to the skies. The company has just announced the first certification and installation of Panasonic Avionics' eXConnect in-flight internet service in one of its Boeing Business Jet 737 aircraft, which will initially be used by Panasonic itself for ongoing testing and demonstrations. According to Business Insider, President Obama is scheduled to be flying into the San Francisco area this afternoon to attend an event for District Attorney Kamala Harris and to deliver remarks at a later dinner. What isn't on the President's public agenda, according to an anonymous source familiar with the matter, is a one-on-one meeting with the turtlenecked crusader himself, Steve Jobs.

AT&T activates record-setting 5.2 million iPhones this summer
AT&T set a new record by activating 5.2 million iPhones in the US over summer of 2010. That's a huge number, especially considering that it activated 3.2 million iPhones in the spring. That's a soaring leap of 62.5 percent.
In total, AT&T switched on more than 8 million "integrated devices" during that quarter, the majority of which were iPhones. The company also grew its customer base by 2.6 million, bringing the grand total of those of us enjoying its services to 92.8 million. Finally, the iPhone is being recognized for producing AT&T's best ever customer turnover rate of 1.32 percent.
Remember that "antenna issue" that was supposed to kill the iPhone 4? Yeah.

Television networks block Google TV from accessing web-based content
You may be able to watch The Office on your Google TV, but perhaps not on demand -- ABC, CBS and NBC are barring Sony and Logitech's web-infused TVs and set-top-boxes from accessing full episodes of streaming video content. The Wall Street Journal reports that all three networks have confirmed the ban, and that Fox hasn't yet reached a decision on whether it will ban Google TV as well. Adobe announces HTML5 Video Player widget
Adobe's Dreamweaver Team Blog today broke the news that they've created an HTML5 Video Player widget which generates code to play video in the best player for a specific platform using a variety of video codecs.
The widget is available through the Adobe Widget Browser and works with or without Dreamweaver CS5. It is based on the Kaltura open source library, and is compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera.

EU rules against over-broad copying levies on iPods, phones
The European Court of Justice today ruled that EU countries had to scale back the reach of levies meant to compensate for perceived digital piracy with gadgets. Officials found in a Spanish case of a refusal to pay that member states should only apply levies on devices that were explicitly meant for private copying. Copyright holders and governments couldn't simply apply levies to any device that can make a copy, the court said.

PlayStation Move shipped one million units its first month in the Americas
We've got some hard numbers from Sony on how the PlayStation Move is doing in the US, and it's really not that bad. Sony says it's shipped more than one million units of Move (which particular configuration is unclear) in North and Latin America. If you add in the 1.5 million Sony said it had already sold in Europe a couple of weeks ago, and Sony's probably hovering close to the 3 million mark as of right now. Not bad for an add-on peripheral, and Sony itself says it sees the Move as more of a word-of-mouth grower, but we'll see how much momentum Kinect gets out of the gate: Microsoft certainly plans on

New Apple Store opens in Australia, and a sneak preview of the new Chicago store
Apple celebrated the opening of another retail store in Australia, the fifth such store in the state of New South Wales, and the tenth in the country. The Charlestown Apple Store had a grand opening today at 5:00pm, and TUAW reader Paul L. was on hand for the festivities, replete with the usual blue-shirted employees and lines of customers.
