If you don't have Snow Leopard, iLife '11 is a no-no
iLife '09 was certainly moving toward an Intel processor requirement, but iLife '11 has made the transition complete with even tighter requirements. You have to have an Intel-based Mac, of course, and that Mac has to be running Snow Leopard.
It's not a giant surprise; things have been slowly rolling that way, both from Apple and other Mac software developers. If you are still running that big Mac G5 desktop or one of the older non-Intel laptops the walls are slowly closing in on you.
Also note that iLife '11 really wants you to have only the latest version of the software suite. An install will upgrade (replace) iLife '09, so once you pull the trigger there is no going back. Consider yourself informed, and warned. Do you feel it is a mis

New 11.6-inch MacBook Air ripped to pieces, exposing proprietary parts
The entire world saw the 13-inch MacBook Air exposed to the elements before it was announced on stage, but its 11.6-inch younger brother is just now getting the teardown treatment. iFixit tore the tiny machine asunder, and found even more miniature battery packs nestled in its 0.68-inch-thick frame. Like Apple's previous Air, the components here are proprietary, and the 2GB memory module's actually soldered to the board -- some tradeoffs had to be made for miniaturization, we suppose, and we can't deny the result is a beautiful machine inside

Barnes & Noble prepping new Nook with full color touchscreen?
Yeah, the Nook already has one color screen, but its primary display is depressingly monochrome. Now there's word on the street, from a reliable source of CNET's, that Barnes & Noble will be bringing a full-color, Android-based, touchscreen Nook to its event next Tuesday. That sure sounds a whole lot like a full fledged Android tablet, which would be quite a departure for Barnes & Noble -- sure, the Nook is Android-based, but it hardly acts like it currently. MacBook Air accessories arrive from TOM BIHN, WaterField
Just a day after Apple launched its new MacBook Air models, three company's have launched protective accessories for the device. TOM BIHN has launched its Cache Sleeve for the 11-inch MacBook Air, offering 360-degree protection for the Air. The sleeve has 6mm thick foam padding and a brushed tricot interior lining to protect the MacBook. The exterior is laminated four-ply Taslan and the case closes using a flap instead of Velcro. The case ships in early November in black or grey for $30.

Hulu Plus may drop to $5 to boost sagging demand
Hulu may be slashing the price of Hulu Plus in half due to lack of demand, based on info from tipsters. The normally $10 service would drop to $5. When or how certain this was wouldn't be said, but AllThingsD noted that this would most likely be due to poor adoption rates in the early phases.

GE introduces 'hybrid' bulb with both halogen and CFL elements, instant-on meets efficiency
We're pretty okay with waiting the second or so it takes a typical CFL to light up, but sometimes, when we're checking for monsters in closets and other inconspicuous places, it'd be nice if things were a little more expedient. For those times (and for generally impatient people) GE is introducing its Hybrid Halogen-CFL bulb. It's basically a typical CFL unit, but look closely inside those coils and you'll spot a wee halogen bulb peeking out. It's like two bulbs in one, the halogen unit powering on almost instantaneously then fading off once the CFL element gets itself all riled up. W

DxO tips Optics Pro 6.5, new HDR plugin
DxO has announced that a new version of Optics Pro, 6.5, should ship in early November. The photo processing tool is getting several key upgrades, most notably the ability to simulate HDR (high dynamic range) toning using a single shot. During the toning process, shadow noise removal is used to ensure clean output.

Mac 101: Use Archive Utility preferences for control over archives
Most users know that you can easily create .zip files in OS X by selecting a file in Finder and choosing File » Compress "FileNameHere" or by control+clicking the file and choosing the same option from the context menu. You can open .zip (and other archive formats such as gzip, tar, and bzip2) simply by double clicking on them.
You may not have known that additional options are available. For example, after you make a .zip file, you could have the original files moved to the trash automatically, or you could have all .zip files that you create automatically saved to the same folder.
Similarly, you can have all archive files that you expand open to the same directory as the archive, or have them saved to a specific folder.

Square ships iPhone 4-capable readers
In response to the incompatibility of its mobile payment system with the iPhone 4, Square has released an updated version of the product that is compatible with Apple's latest smartphone. The older version interfered with the new phone's antenna by contacting it with its own metal fitting. The device is now shipping, and mainly has a plastic fitting instead of metal to get rid of the interference.

Survey: 32% of iPad owners have never downloaded an app
This is a fascinating little stat that echoes a few anecdotal statements I've heard before. Nielsenwire is claiming that a full 32% of iPad owners have never actually downloaded an app on the device, with another 5% only downloading free apps. That's a pretty crazy figure when you think about it -- with all of the functionality offered by third-party software on the iPad, almost a third of users have never, ever taken advantage of any of it. And I've heard similar things from developers in the past -- that a surprising amount of their users have either never downloaded an app on their iPhones at all, or have only ever downloaded free, jailbroken, or pirated apps.

Samsung Galaxy Player 50 shown off in lengthy ad, already on sale in France
We got a pretty good look at Samsung's Android-based Galaxy Player 50 at IFA last month, but those looking for even more can now get a pretty thorough overview of the device courtesy of a new Samsung ad that runs a full two minutes and forty seconds. What's more, Samsung Hub is reporting that at least one retailer in France is already selling the device, which is basically a Samsung Galaxy phone without the phone. 11-inch MacBook Air teardown shows Toshiba SSD
An ongoing teardown of the new 11-inch MacBook Air by iFixit has discovered extra details beyond just what Apple showed during its own keynote. The ultraportable's SSD was already known to be custom since none take up its very narrow shape, but the 64GB example here is now known to be entirely Toshiba-derived and uses the Japanese firm's memory controller and four 16GB chips from the same firm. It won't be user-replaceable but, at half the thickness and less overall area, is key to the system's thin design.

Lion to bring tweaked iCal, Mail apps
Apple is making at least minor changes to Mail and iCal with Mac OS X Lion, a closer look at current press material is said to show. iCal, AppleInsider notes, is gaining a Year view, in addition to present Day, Week and Month options. Look and layout is now also closer to the iPad's Calendar app, and buttons for flipping pages have been moved away from the view commands to the upper right-hand corner.

Found Footage: TWEET IT a video parody of Beat it
We're a few days late on this one, but I thought that it was quite well done and rather clever in a Weird Al Yankovich sort of way. Apple's Mac App Store Review Guidelines posted -- will Photoshop make it in?
No surprise that Apple's new Mac App Store has a similar set of rules and regulations as the iPhone App Store, and we just got the full list. Sony considers incorporating Android into more (as yet unnamed) products

Barnes & Noble readying Nook Color for its special event?
Barnes & Noble's special Nook-related event next week may result in a color e-reader, a source mentioned this afternoon. To be called just the Nook Color, it would have a seven-inch touchscreen as its main interface, presumably in place of the split e-paper and LCDs it uses today. The contact for CNET isn't certain of the technology, though it's more likely to be LCD with mirasol displays not due to formally launch until early 2011.

Two new interactive eBooks for Halloween
Just in time for Halloween, Oceanhouse Media introduces two more of their excellent interactive children's storybooks. Both of them are spooky, but certainly not scary, being targeted to the four year old and up crowd. Both are about acceptance and teach a gentle lesson about not judging a book, an empty pair of pants or a pumpkin by its cover.

Sony may have 24MP translucent mirror camera by mid-2011
Sony was claimed by multiple sources late last night to be developing a new, very high-end DSLR using the same translucent mirror technology behind the Alpha A33 and A55. It would come with a new 24-megapixel crop frame sensor that would still have as little noise as the 14- to 16-megapixel sensors on the existing cameras. The camera would have a Bionz processor related to the A33/A55 design, Sony Alpha Rumors said in its details, and would have micro-adjustment of AF points as well as capture video up to 1080p30.

Auch wenn viele Entwickler ihre Programme bereits auf 64 Bit umgestellt haben, war es Apple offensichtlich noch nicht möglich, dies auch bei iLife zu tun. Startet man die Programme und wirft dann einen Blick auf die Aktivitätsanzeige, so ist die Art des Programms weiterhin "Intel". Facelette brings random chat to FaceTime for Mac
Sometimes it's very easy to predict the future. Just as the day follows the night and the sniffles follow ragweed pollen, we can confidently say that within a short time there will be incidents of unwanted exposure on Facelette, followed by urgent cries to protect the innocent, and likely as not the collapse and disappearance of the whole thing shortly after. Apple TV jailbreak yields first third-party app
Only a few days ago , Greenpois0n revealed that it had jailbroken the Apple TV. Yesterday, PwnageTool 4.1 joined the ranks, too. Now we have sights of what appears to be the first third-party app running on a jailbroken Apple TV. nitoTV, a small software development firm, has managed to get a simple weather app running on the device. According to nitoTV's twitter feed, a version of the app with "weather and RSS feeds" will be out "soon."

Third of iPad owners not downloading apps, study suggests
A large group of iPad owners, 32 percent, may not be downloading any apps from the App Store, a Nielsen study suggests. The figure comes from an August poll of 5,000 wireless device owners. Within the iPad contingent, only 63 percent had paid for at least one app. A sliver of people - 5 percent -- were downloading only free apps. As a rule, native iPad apps tend to be more expensive than ones compatible with the iPhone or iPod touch.

New MacBook Air shipping without Flash installed
Users are reporting that Apple's new MacBook Air models, announced yesterday at Apple's 'Back to the Mac' press conference, are shipping without Adobe's Flash player plug-in pre-installed. Traditionally, Mac computers have shipped with Flash preloaded - so users wouldn't have to worry about installing it. Now, new MacBook Air users will have to download and install the plug-in themselves, should they wish to view Flash content on the internet. It's not a biggie, but it does send a strong message.

Barnes & Noble Nook goes on sale at Walmart next week
We still don't know what Barnes & Noble is announcing at its "very special event" next week, but the company has just made another fairly big announcement: the Nook will be hitting the shelves at some 2,500 Walmart stores beginning "as soon as" October 24th (in addition to Walmart's online store). That includes both the 3G and WiFi-only Nook models, and some Walmart stores will even have a "Nook-branded eReading area" where customers can try out the device. FaceTime for Mac security hole easily remedied
Macworld Germany has described what they're calling a security hole in the FaceTime for Mac beta (Google translation). The gist is this: once a user has logged into FaceTime for the Mac, his/her Apple ID and password can be altered from the app by anyone with access to the computer while FaceTime is running.

Stephen Elop hat es bei der Bekanntgabe der Quartalsergebnisse erwähnt. Das erste wirkliche MeeGo Handy von Nokia wird erst nächstes Jahr kommen. Wir vermuten immer noch es dreht sich um das N9. Und damit nicht mehr der Eindruck entsteht, man käme nicht hinterher werden Geräte auch in Zukunft viel kürzer vor dem Erscheinungsdatum angekündigt. IPad is affecting the hard drive industry, but MacBook Air could deal a fatal blow
A piece of news that got brushed aside for a bit yesterday due to the "Back to the Mac" event, Western Digital chief executive John Coyne said that the company has taken a hit due to the iPad's popularity. The result is a 10 to 20 percent drop in shipments of hard drives for low-end netbooks and laptops over the next few quarters, he said.
Granted, Coyne is probably popping antacids after yesterday's MacBook Air announcement. With up to 256GB of flash storage on the logic board, Apple is definitely making the point that the future of storage for laptops, netbooks and tablets is not a disk-base

iLife, iWork apps to sell individually in Mac App Store
It seems that Apple will sell its iWork and iLife apps individually through the forthcoming Mac App Store. Some keen-eyed observers noticed hints during this week's demonstration, ElectricPig reports.
During the demo, you could clearly see GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto icons among the available apps. Indeed, the screenshot on the official Lion information page shows the same thing. It's impossible to see what the cost will be (we *think* it says $14.95), but the idea is interesting. Many users buy the bundle for one or two apps only (iMove and iPhoto, but not GarageBand for instance). An a la carte offering would prevent those shoppers from paying for an app(s) that they won't use.

NVIDIA's next-generation Fermi-based graphics chipset, the GeForce GTX 580, was said today to be shipping in late November or early December. The design is estimated to be about 20 percent faster than a GTX 480. iMovie '11 Trailers feature won't let you spoof Universal trailers
Loyal tipster Tarik sent word that the iMovie '11 Trailers theme using a globe (very similar to the Universal Studios opener) won't allow you to use the word "Universal" in the title.
He's currently testing other themes for similar censors, but it looks like Apple didn't want people spoofing Universal Studios trailers. Because I'm sure "Me and my dog go to the beach" could easily be confused with "Marley and Me,"* right?
As you can see in the picture, Tarik tried to input Universal for the "studio name" field. iMovie detected this, and substituted the hyphens. Die HD Webcam hat Skype-Zertifizierung dürfte also beim glasklaren Video-Chat in Zukunft keinerlei Probleme machen und für den Sound sorgen JBL Hi-Fi Lautsprecher. PSA: FaceTime beta endangers your Apple ID password and security questions
Worried about local hackers? Like leaving your laptop behind in the coffee shop while you take long, leisurely trips to the bathroom? We wouldn't be so self-assured. Turns out there's a gaping security hole in the FaceTime beta, which allows anyone with access to your computer to change your password without knowing it to begin with, as well as peep and edit your security questions and answers. It would be nice if signing out of FaceTime would protect you, but unfortunately the app seems to have a lock-tight memory on your password, so it's easy for anyone to open the app and sign-in again. Hopefully Apple will fix these holes quickly, and until then we recommend uninstall

If you attended our liveblog of yesterday's Back to the Mac event, you were introduced to Sam Levin, a Bay Area PR guy who also happens to love Apple products. Sam was our man-on-the-street for the liveblog, sitting in the audience and giving us a firsthand view of the proceedings.
On his way out of the keynote venue, Sam noticed a table with a pile of Apple retail bags -- a very large pile of bags -- so he walked over to see what was going on. It turns out that Steve Jobs' invitation to the press to get a hands-on demo of the new MacBook Air was actually an invitation to take one home for two months. Apple moves to 'deprecate' Java on Macs
Some details on the future of Java on Macs has emerged in combination with the release of two Java updates, a tipster tells MacNN. "As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the version of Java that is ported by Apple, and that ships with Mac OS X, is deprecated," the company now remarks in the Mac OS X Reference Library. "This means that the Apple-produced runtime will not be maintained at the same level, and may be removed from future versions of Mac OS X."

Dell chief marketing officer Paul-Henri Ferrand today said his company was spending "hundreds of millions" on a marketing campaign to improve its image and better compete against Apple. News: AT&T announces 5.2 million iPhone activations

ITU lays down law: WiMAX 2, LTE-Advanced are 4G, everyone else is a buster

Microsoft moves 240 million Windows 7 copies in one year
Microsoft preceded the one-year anniversary of Windows 7 by noting that it had sold 240 million licenses of the OS over that timeframe. The OS is both Microsoft's and by nature the industry's fastest-selling OS. Just like Doodle Jump, another big-name App Store game is getting in the Halloween spirit. Angry Birds Halloween is now available on the App Store. It's a US$0.99 "special edition" of Angry Birds with 45 Halloween-themed levels, which are complete with "scary" backgrounds and pumpkins for you to smash.

A team of surgeons at McGill University, including the da Vinci robo-surgeon and a robot anesthesiologist named, of all things, McSleepy, recently removed some dude's prostate during what is being billed as the world's first all-robotic surgery. Apple quietly discontinuing OS X's factory-fitted Java
In an announcement on developer.apple.com, Apple states that "As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the version of Java that is ported by Apple, and that ships with Mac OS X, is deprecated." It now seems likely that OS X 10.7 will not have a Java install built into the OS .
This is not all that surprising. In the early days of OS X, Apple were keen on Java, supporting it as a full-fledged alternative to Objective C for application development. Nokia boosts earnings but plans to lose share, cuts jobs
Nokia today raised concerns of growing problems in its summer quarter's results despite improving its fiscal stance. The company's revenues were up five percent to the equivalent of $14.4 billion and returned back to a $565.3 million profit after a loss a year ago, but it now expected to lose market share for all of 2010 where it had insisted it would hold its position for most of the year. The warning came in spite of smartphone sales spiking year-over-year by 61 percent, to 26.5 million, and its total phone numbers climbing a small two percent to 110.4 million.

Do you have some apps that you want to keep running all the time? If so, and if you're not afraid of the Terminal or the command line, I have a script for you.
When I come home at the end of the day, Dropbox has stopped running on my iMac. I'm running the latest version, and it works fine on my MacBook Pro, but for some reason, this just keeps happening. The script has nothing to do with Dropbox itself; you could substitute any app that you always want running, such as LaunchBar, OmniFocus, 1Password, or any other app that you like.

Mac App Store to sell iLife and iWork Mac apps individually
In Appleís Back to the Mac Steve Jobs and VP Craig Federighi discussed and offered a quick demo of the new Mac App Store that will be made available for Snow Leopard users in around 90 days. Paypal beschert Ebay Gewinnsteigerung von 23 Prozent
Ebay hat seinen Nettogewinn im dritten Quartal um 23 Prozent auf 432 Millionen Dollar (302 Millionen Euro) oder 0,33 Dollar je Aktie gesteigert. Der Non-GAAP-Gewinn kletterte um 14 Prozent auf 0,40 Dollar je Anteilsschein. Damit übertrifft Ebay die Erwartungen von Analysten, die den Überschuss im Vorfeld auf 0,37 Dollar je Aktie geschätzt hatten.

Neues MacBook Air standardmässig ohne Adobe Flash
Apples Aussage, sich beim neuen MacBook Air am erfolgreichen iPad orientiert zu haben, schliesst offenbar auch den Verzicht auf Adobe Flash mit ein. Wie MacRumors berichtet, ist der Adobe Flash Player auf dem MacBook Air standardmässig nicht installiert. Bisher rüstete Apple seine Macs stets ab Werk mit dem Flash-Plugin aus. Flash wird zur Darstellung von vielen interaktiven Inhalten im Internet benötigt. Allerdings verzichtete Apple beim iPhone und auch beim iPad auf Flash, da die Flash-Technologie (gemäss Apple) für solche Geräte nicht geeignet und zu ressourcenhungrig sei. Den Flash-Verzicht beim MacBook Air darf man wohl als nächsten Schritt in Apples Kampf gegen Flash interpretieren, auch wenn hier die Argumente gegen Flash weitestgehend fehlen.

Neue Software-Updates: Java, Aperture, ProKit
Apple hat eine Reihe an neuen Software-Updates veröffentlicht. Das Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 verbessert die Kompatibilität, Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit von Java SE 6. Das Java-Update ist 74 Megabyte gross und ist auch für Benutzer von Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard erhältlich (119 MB). Auch die Bildverwaltung Aperture wurde aktualisiert. Aperture 3.1 verbessert die Stabilität und Performance und stellt die Kompatibilität zu iLife ‘11 sicher. Das Update enthält diverse Bugfixes und ist rund 358 Megabyte gross. Zu guter Letzt wurde das 13 Megabyte grosse ProKit 6.0 (SnowLeopard) Update veröffentlicht, welches Fehler in der Benutzeroberfläche von Apples Pro-Apps behebt.

Verizon's FiOS Mobile Remote app ready for iPhone
Verizon has had their FiOS DVR Manager app available for some time now. Now the company has released another offering to the App Store in the way of a wireless remote.
Using the Verizon FiOS Mobile Remote requires you to be connected to your FiOS-provided wireless network in order to work. Once you follow the simple steps presented by the app, you'll be paired with your cable box and have the ability to quickly change channels, traverse the on-set programming guide and control the DVR. You know, like the actual cable box remote already does.

Report: Apple to make significant enterprise gains in 2011
Despite Apple's insistence that it is a mobile device company, it turns out that the Mac category is far from done growing. A new study from the Enterprise Desktop Alliance says that 2011 is set to be a huge year for Mac on the enterprise level, with reportedly 25 percent of all new systems in that category to be Macs. That would be astonishing, and would move the Mac from the current figure of 3.3% of enterprise systems up to 5%. All of this growth, says the EDA, will primarily come from companies who have already chosen Apple's technology for their systems -- they'll just be buying more of it.

Apple has posted the keynote video for its "Back to the Mac" event, which was held earlier today in San Francisco. Clearwire gets 90Mbps in early LTE-based 4G tests
Clearwire at 4G World today reported that the first results of its LTE-based 4G trials provided extremely high speeds. Using a full 20x20MHz frequency range, it reached 90Mbps for downloads and about 30Mbps for uploads. The conditions were ideal, with an empty network, but were "massively different" compared to 4G over WiMAX and higher than the estimated 70Mbps, Clearwire's chief commercial officer Mike Sievert said with Fierce in attendance.

Software updates: Aperture 3.1, Java Update 3, and ProKit Update
Three big updates just showed up in Software Update: Aperture 3.1, Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, and ProKit Update.
Aperture 3.1 weighs in at nearly 375 MB. Aside from the usual improvements to "overall stability and performance," Aperture 3.1 brings compatibility with the brand new iLife '11 suite. There's also a whole host of bug fixes -- too many to list here, honestly.
Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 is about 78 MB and updates Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_22.

HTC Trophy becomes first WP7 device sold amid modest lineups
Windows Phone 7 has officially launched as Microsoft today recorded the first known sales. The first, unnamed customer bought an HTC Trophy from Vodafone in Auckland, New Zealand at the carrier's Aotea Square shop. Apple has posted the Review Guidelines for what will soon be the omnipresent Mac App Store, and many developers aren't happy with what they're seeing. Like the iOS App Store, Apple will control the gates and review each application before it's posted. 70% of the profits will go to the developers, and 30% will presumably pay for chairs in which Steve Jobs and the rest of his executive team will sit to watch the iOS App Store money roll in.

Samsung adds prescription lens option to its active shutter 3D glasses

Even though the 2010 MacBook Air has only just been released, Apple has already released a matching software update. The code fixes two graphics glitches: one in which a system freezes while playing iMovie trailers, and another in which a freeze is triggered by waking from sleep when an external display is connected.
