Apple posts updates for ProKit, Aperture
Apple has released updates to its Aperture photography utility and ProKit suite of professional applications. Aperture 3.1 offers improvements to stability and overall performance, while adding compatibility with iLife '11. The software also brings a long list of bug fixes for problems relating to importing, face detection, rendering, red eye correction, slideshows and GPS data.

Netflix says US streaming-only may arrive this fall
Netflix chief Reed Hastings in comments on his company's latest results hinted that the firm may hasten plans for streaming-only US access. As long as results were as strong as expected, the CEO believed Netflix could have a disc-free option later in the fall. The Canadian debut of the strategy was very successful and also played a role, Hastings said.

Why the Mac App Store rocks for developers
No matter how good your application is, no matter how novel, how brilliant, how special -- none of it matters if you don't have anyone to use it. The iOS App Store changed the way developers work by providing a streamlined channel between software developers and potential customers.
Consider my APIkit scanner application. After opening the app to public beta a few months ago, I may have gotten about 200-300 users. Total. (And a grand total of zero feedback, but that's a completely different gripe about public betas.) Contrast with App Store.
As far as I can calculate, I have now shipped well over a million apps in App Store -- that's extrapolating from the 600+ thousand copies that iTunes Connect tells me I've pushed out in the last six months, no

Mac OS X 10.7 aka Lion kommt und wie schon hier und da gerüchteweise vorhergesagt bringt es einen App Store für den Mac mit bzw. der kommt schon deutlich früher, nämlich in den nächsten 90 Tagen. Was bei iPod, iPhone und iPad funktioniert, macht auch für den Mac Sinn, und das gilt nicht nur für den App Store: Lion hat das Launchpad, was im Prinzip das Gleiche ist wie der Homescreen beim iPad, der Fokus liegt außerdem auf Vollbild (wie auch beim neuen iLife), Multitouchgesten und ein neues Navigationsfeature namens Mission Control führt das Dashboard und Expose zusammen. Motorola intros its first 4G LTE USB modem
Motorola on Tuesday announced it will soon offer its own 4G LTE USB modem with its USB-lte 7110. The device uses multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) smart antennas and the company's fourth-generation broadband platform. Its LTE rating gives it support for 100Mbps downloads and 50Mbps uploads.

Editorial: Why the Galaxy Tab's price makes sense
Alright, I was wrong. On the Engadget Podcast I said that Samsung is capable of navigating to store.apple.com and checking out the iPad prices. I figured Samsung would see $500 as its maximum unsubsidized price for the Galaxy Tab, but apparently Samsung decided its competition was the iPad with 3G. Is a $600 Galaxy Tab a compelling offering up against a $630 3G iPad? Maybe, maybe not. But it's not an insane proposition by any means. In fact, I think it could do pretty well.

EA buys out Angry Birds publisher Chillingo
Major PC and console games publisher Electronic Arts has bought out Chillingo, according to the LA Times. Although the deal is said to have cost less than $20 million in cash, Chillingo is a significant publisher of iPhone and iPad games. Two titles in its library -- Cut the Rope and Angry Birds -- are currently leading in the App Store's paid charts. The company is also responsible for distributing occasional movie/TV show tie-ins, like Predators and Numb3rs.

Angry Birds publisher Chillingo acquired for $20 million
In the wake of such huge news from Apple today, it's hard to concentrate on anything else. Here's one story you wont want to miss, though: Chillingo, the publisher behind the wildly popular game Angry Birds, was acquired by EA Games for a cool $20 million in cash.
Not to worry, though, because Angry Birds isn't going anywhere. The rights to the game are actually owned by the developer Rovio, who updated his Twitter profile earlier today to clarify that Angry Birds was not part of the sale and will not be controlled development-wise by EA. Windows Phone 7 now on sale... in New Zealand
Well played, New Zealand. Hobbit-infested scenery, Flight of the Conchords, the first in the world to get iPhone 3Gs and now this. What you're looking at is purportedly the first person to purchase a Windows Phone 7 device, and even if that's not quite the case, it signals the launch of the phone for the island country, which would make it the first region in the world to put the device on sale. MacBook Air extras: OS X on USB drive, new CPUs, HDMI cable
Apple as part of the new MacBook Air launch provided at least a pair of surprises. The ultraportables are the first modern Macs to scrap optical discs for their Mac OS X discs and instead put both the OS and the iLife install on a single USB drive. Its switch means MacBook Air users can finally reinstall the OS without needing to use DVD Sharing to bring a system back to health.

Sowohl für Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard als auch für Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard stehen über die Software-Aktualisierung Java-Updates zur Verfügung. Software Reinstall USB drive comes with new MacBook Air
During today's "Back to the Mac" event Apple announced a brand new MacBook Air that comes in two screen sizes and features a bevy of upgrades. However, one similarity the new Air has with its lineage is the lack of an optical drive.

MacBook Air: all substance, no Flash
Amusingly enough, you know what's missing from the new MacBook Air models? Adobe Flash Player. While preloaded on Apple's past hardware, out of the box here it just says missing plugin, with no click to install option. MacBook Air: Laptop trifft iPad
Das kommt also dabei heraus wenn man ein iPad mit einem Laptop kreuzt? Zumindest nach Steve Jobs Lesart hat der Zwitter aus MacBook und iPad keine Festplatte, ist leicht und klein ohne das die Ergonomie darunter leiden muss und verfügt über sofortige Betriebsbereitschaft beim Einschalten. Western Digital hurt by iPad, now MacBook Air too
Western Digital warned late Tuesday that the iPad was leading a charge that could hurt its business. It gave a lower than expected outlook for the fall as he expected Apple and rivals to slow the growth of traditional, spinning hard drives by 10 to 20 percent over the next several months or more. CEO John Coyne tried to reassure investors by asking them to look to the long term, where he saw regular hard drives still leading mass storage for the next 10 years.

iLife '11 Up-to-Date gets details; iDVD, iWeb stay static
To support the launch of iLife '11, Apple has implemented what it calls the iLife '11 Hardware Up-to-Date Program. Instead of having to pay the usual $49 for an iLife '11 upgrade, people can potentially get the software for just $7. Those who bought a Mac with an earlier version of iLife between October 1st and the 19th must submit an order form by November 19th. For people buying a Mac with an outdated iLife on or after the 20th, a 30-day post-purchase window exists.

We've been anticipating FaceTime for the Mac ever since we spied the feature on the iPhone, and now Apple is making our dreams a reality with a handy new beta Mac OS X application dubbed "FaceTime." It's not an iChat replacement; far from it, in fact. Instead, the standalone, lightweight app dedicates itself to FaceTime calls only, with no sign of your handy AIM or Gtalk buddy list to help you along. Macbook Air mit 11,6 Zoll Display wiegt 1,06 Kilo und kostet 999 Euro
Apple hat wie erwartet heute zwei neue Macbook-Air-Modelle vorgestellt. Beide Varianten sind lediglich mit Flashspeicher (11,6: 64 oder 128 MByte, 13,3: 128 oder 256 GByte) und Core-2-Duo-CPU erhältlich. Für die 11,6-Zoll-Modelle verwendet Apple einen 1,4 GHz schnellen Prozessor, während in der 13,3-Zoll-Variante ein 1,86-GHz-Prozessor zum Einsatz kommt. Der Arbeitsspeicher beträgt standardmäßig 2 GByte und kann - anders als beim bisherigen Modell - auf 4 GByte erweitert werden. Der Aufpreis für den Ausbau beträgt 100 Euro. In der Grundkonfiguration beträgt der Preis für das 11,6-Zoll-Modell 999 Euro, während die 13,3-Zoll-Variante mit 1299 Euro zu Buche schlägt.

FaceTime for Mac: Video hands-on
After some initial downloading hiccups (but thanks for those extra copies of the iWork demo, Apple) the FaceTime Mac beta is up and running.
Setup is dead simple -- enter your MobileMe or Apple ID, or sign up for one if you don't have it. Sign in and you're ready to go. Your email address is your service locator, that's how folks will find you.
There's no resolution settings, no tweaking to do -- considering that most of your chat partners are on iOS devices, that makes perfect sense.

FaceTime neu auch auf dem Mac
Wie wir bereits im Januar bei der Vorstellung des iPhone 4 und dessen neuer FaceTime-Technologie prophezeit hatten, hat es nun endlich die Video-Konferenz-Technologie «FaceTime» auch auf den Mac geschafft. Macs können somit ab sofort Videoanrufe mit den mittlerweile über 19 Millionen iPhone-4- und iPod-touch-4G-Benutzern führen. Eine Public-Beta-Version von FaceTime für den Mac kann ab sofort kostenlos von apple.com heruntergeladen werden. Die knapp 14 MB grosse Software erlaubt FaceTime-Videoanrufe vom Mac auf die iOS-Geräte bzw. andersherum. Nachdem man sich mittels der AppleID angemeldet und eine E-Mail-Adresse als «Telefonnummer» definiert hat, erhält man eine Ansicht aller Kontakte des Adressbuches, welche dann nur noch angeklickt und zur FaceTime ausgewählt werden können. Dabei können auch Favoriten angelegt werden — ähnlich der iOS-Telefonapp.

Zum ersten Mal sei über einem Jahr hat Apple heute neue Modelle des MacBook Air vorgestellt. Dabei beschränkte sich Apple nicht auf blosse Modellpflege, sondern hat das MacBook Air von Grund auf neu entwickelt. Ab sofort ist das MacBook Air in zwei Grössen wahlweise mit einem 11.6- oder einem 13.3-Zoll-Display erhältlich. Erstmals verbaut Apple in einem Mac-Notebook serienmässig keine Festplatte mehr. FaceTime für Mac ab heute als Beta
FaceTime für den Mac kommt als App schon heute (wir haben es allerdings in den Software-Updates noch nicht gesichtet, also schaut lieber morgen früh mal nach) und ermöglicht einem jetzt auch mit iPhone 4 oder iPod Touch Usern, aber auch mit anderen Macs zu "videochatten". Die App läuft dann wohl in Zukunft parallel zu iChat, was nicht allzuviel Sinn zu machen scheint, und wird über das Apple Adressbuch gefüttert. Sieht aus wie ein Schnellschuss, weil die Nachfrage so groß war. Landscape und Portrait-Mode stellen sich automatisch um.

Apple announced two new flavors of the MacBook Air today, starting at $999 for a 64GB Air that has no hard drive or optical drive. The $999 MacBook Air has an 11.6-inch screen while a 13.3-inch Air, starting at $1299, will start at 128GB flash storage.
Both MacBook Airs have unibody construction with the SSD chips placed directly on the logic board. The 11-inch MacBook Air will have up to 5 hours of battery life, the 13-inch will have 7 hours. Both will last up to 30 days in standby mode.
The 13-inch MacBook Air has a 1.86 GHz Core 2 Duo processor (upgradeable to 2.13 GHz),

MacBook Air (13-inch) first hands-on!
We just spent some quality time with the new 13-inch MacBook Air, and it certainly seems like a worth upgrade. It definitely feels bigger than the 11-inch, and we noticed the functions keys are standard MacBook size, as opposed to the shrunken ones on the 11. We also noticed that it was seriously instant-on -- we popped the lid open and closed several times while taking photos, and it was ready to go the second we opened it. Apple today has announced a Mac App Store based upon their popular iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad App Stores. The Mac App Store will offer one-click download of Mac apps, auto-installation, auto-updates, a 70/30 split for developers, and all the apps you buy are licensed for use on all your personal Macs.
A Mac App Store is something that has been suggested in the past by press and readers alike, but few thought one would ever materialize. It will be interesting to see how Mac developers respond to this and if any major developers (like Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) join in. The Mac App Store will be a stand alone app available for Snow Leopard and Lion. Application submissions start in November and the store opens 90 days from today.

Facetime made its grand debut as part of iOS4 (specifically on the iPhone 4 hardware). It expanded to a nice user base once the fourth generation of the iPod touch was released. In today's event, it was announced that in the first four months of Facetime's existence, said user base grew to 19 million people.
Now those 19 million people will be able to talk to all the customers of Apple Computer who actually purchased a computer! As of today, the beta for FaceTime will be available for computers as well.

Apple asked itself what would happen if an iPad and a MacBook Air "hooked up." Benefits from the iPad? "Instant on great battery life, amazing standby time solid state storage and it's thinner and lighter." It's 0.68-inches thick at its thickest, 0.11-inches at its thinnest. It weighs 2.9 pounds. Apple: Mac OS X/iOS Merger, iLife 11
Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") will merge iOS with Mac OS X, with Apple taking over Mac application distribution via a new Mac application store just like the iTunes App Store for iOS devices. Lion will also integrate multi-touch control and move to a new user interface like the iPad's. Lion is due for release next summer, but the Mac App Store will debut on Snow Leopard within 90 days. iLife 11 debuts today at $49, adding a number of new features to iPhoto, iMovie an GarageBand.

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion announced
As expected, Apple today offered a preview of Mac OS X 10.7, a.k.a "Lion," which Steve Jobs says has been inspired by the company's efforts with iOS. That inspiration has resulted in an expanded use of multitouch gestures (but not on a vertical screen) and -- here's the big one -- an App Store for OS X.

Mac App Store for OS X 10.7 unveiled
Given its success with the iPhone / iPod touch's App Store, we can't say an OS X version is entirely crazy -- and neither can Apple, who just announced such an App Store for its 10.7 Lion. Here's what we know so far: multi-touch gestures, app home screens, full screen apps. "Every app on the iPad is a full screen app," says Steve. Auto save, apps resume when launched. Don't expect on-screen multitouch, as Jobs is very much against vertical touching. "Touch surfaces want to be horizontal" -- you can all but kiss those touchscreen iMac rumors goodbye. Just like iPad, there's automatic installation, auto-updates, a 70 / 30 revenue split for developers, one-click downloads, and the license works for all personal Macs.

iMovie '11 features audio editing overhaul, movie trailer creation
Steve Jobs said that the top feature request for iMovie was an overhaul of the audio editing. This is the highlight of the just-announced iMovie as part of iLife '11, with a new audio editing panel with the ability to add effects. Other features include:

Apple: Mac sales could sustain a Fortune 500 company by itself
One in five PCs sold in the United States is a Mac, making up 20.67% of U.S. consumer market share, and bringing in triple the amount of money the Mac has earned since fiscal year 2005.
That's the amazing number that Tim Cook, Apple's COO, shared at the beginning of today's "Back to the Mac" conference. Other awesome numbers?

Apple announces iLife '11
There you have it. Shockingly enough, iMovie, iPhoto, and GarageBand have all been modernized sufficiently to merit having their names appended with '11. iPhoto is taking the early demo lead in the live event, with hot new slideshow themes. Gee, Steve, you're building it up nice and slow, huh? There are added Facebook enhancements and new full screen modes that make it look a lot like an iPad app.

Microsoft gets NYC software deal, forced to unbundle apps
Microsoft on Wednesday reached a deal with New York City to supply software directly to local government but which avoids the controversial practices of earlier years. The deal will give copies of Office and other software to as many as 100,000 people in city agencies but will prevent Microsoft from demanding that software come in bundles. Workers will be put into three different tiers depending on the apps they need and will pay less for the reduced bundles.

Acer Chairman says iPad impact not serious
At a recent talk in Taiwan, Chairman J.T. Wang said he believes demand for netbooks is stable except in the US and the UK. I'm sure that is his hope and fondest dream.
Wang said he thought that early sales of the iPad were simply the result of a rush for the new device. He added that most iPad users were switching to desktops and laptops to write text documents or spreadsheets.
When asked about Acer's loss of market share, the Chairman replied that the drop was "mainly due to competitors cutting prices to compete, and that Acer did not follow suit."

AT&T puts out prepaid international data-only plans
AT&T's international data plans went prepaid today with an update to its DataConnect Pass options for modems and devices with built-in 3G. The Global plans let users pay for a month-long block of bandwidth at rates that are less expensive than paying for each use. Service is still relatively high-priced as it starts at $25 for 20MB of basic use and includes 50MB ($60), 100MB ($120) and 200MB ($200) increments.

Would-be iTunes competitor pending App Store approval
7digital, a UK-based online music store that offered the first DRM-free tracks from the four major music labels, has submitted an iPhone music store app to Apple, which is currently pending approval by Apple.
The app, already available on Android and BlackBerry phones (it's the number one music app on the BlackBerry app store with 500,000 installs), offers an iPod and iTunes music service replacement. If approved, the 7digital app will compete directly with iTunes on iOS devices.
Offering users the ability to browse, download and play music from the 7digital music store on their iOS device (over 3G or Wi-Fi), the 7digital app will sync users' downloaded music wirelessly to their computers, too - something iTunes does not currently offer. Pwnapple heads rejoice. The iPhone dev team has just released PwnageTool 4.1 for Mac OS X. Updated to use the recent geohot limera1n exploit, the new tool provides 4.1 jailbreaks for the Apple TV 2G, iPad (3.2.2), iPod touch (3G, 4G), and iPhone (4, 3GS, and 3G).

Erwartungsgemäß hat Apple nun 90 Minuten vor dem Special Event den Apple Online Store offline genommen. Mercedes-Benz interface to bring Pandora radio from phones
German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz USA recently announced a Media Interface Plus (MIP) for its cars that will let smartphone owners play or stream Pandora Internet radio through their vehicle's sound system. A first from a carmaker, the plug-and-play cable is compatible with the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 and a variety of BlackBerry devices. The iPhone Pandora streaming is accomplished through a USB cable, while BlackBerry owners will need to stream it over Bluetooth.

Sources claim plans for second Brisbane Apple Store
Apple has set its sights on building a second retail store in Brisbane, Australia, sources claim. The people specifically say that Apple will assume the lease of a sports outlet, Rebel Sport, located on the eastern side of the city in the Westfield Carindale mall. Report: iPhone 4 "more prone to physical damage"
SquareTrade, a company that provides extended warranties for iPhones, is reporting that the iPhone 4 is "more prone to physical damage" than the iPhone 3GS, according to the warranty company's iPhone reliability report.
In the report, SquareTrade compared over 20,000 iPhone 4 claims, from the first four months of its release, to the equivalent for the iPhone 3GS. They found that the overall reported accident rate for the iPhone 4 is 68% higher than the 3GS, and that iPhone 4 users reported 82% more damaged screens than the 3GS.

Acer: people will 'return to their senses' and drop iPad
Acer chairman JT Wang chipped into the chorus of fellow executives downplaying the iPad in a speech at a recent Taiwan-area summit. As the clock ticks down toward today's Back to the Mac event, Engadget relays some insider info from a trusted source regarding the capabilities and specs of the all-but-certain MacBook Air 11.6" form factor subnotebook.

CamBall, die Kamera in der Kugel, ist ziemlich trashig, aber der Traum aller Experimentalfilmer

Die CamBall wird als "kleinster Personal Digital Camcorder" angepriesen, aber für die verlangten 149 Dollar bekommt man bestimmt etwas besseres als hier (320 mal 240 Pixel bei 25 FPS, 128 MB Speicher, SD-Karten-Slot, Akku hält 2,5 Stunden). Erst recht, wenn man bedenkt, dass für einen sinnigen Einsatz des CamBall noch Zubehör fällig wird, weil das Ding sonst einfach wegrollt. Womit dann der Punkt genannt wäre, der das Teil doch noch interessant macht: Kugelrund und kleiner als ein Golfball ist die CamBall wohl das Traum-Tool aller Experimentalfilmer. Allein der Gedanke macht schwindelig.

You know, traditionally we try to be thankful for stuff like slim device profiles and innovative touch UIs, particularly with Thanksgiving coming up soon, but every once in a while we shake a fist against the aesthetics of our time and wish for an alternate history that had rerouted us to a 2010 full of IBM-built keyboards and buttons galore. AlphaUi's Back-Type, which has been making the rounds for a couple weeks, is just such a technology, with 24 anachronistically tactile keys on the back designed for a bit of blind typing that engages eight fingers instead of the typical two thumbs. Apple will livestream today's Back to the Mac press event, according to an announcement. Video should become available from the company's website at about 10AM Pacific time, or 1PM Eastern. Mercedes' new Media Interface Plus is smartphone-friendly, Bluetooth-equipped, and Pandora-ready
Mercedes has a new $298 accessory available now that adds another level of smartphone compatibility to its existing in-vehicle controls of iPods and aux audio. The Media Interface Plus allows the car to stream audio from an iPhone, BlackBerry, or any other compatible Bluetooth music player (we're guessing A2DP, though Mercedes doesn't specify). The MIP can also control the Pandora app on the iPhone and BlackBerry, and other features like SMS and email reading / writing are forthcoming. There are iPod / iPhone and Mini-USB plugs for charging, and an optional cable can pull video from your iPhone as well and display it on your in-dash screen -- when the car is at a standstill, of course.

Lenovo: no Android tablet in US pre-Honeycomb, no Windows 7
Lenovo has revealed that it does not plan to release an Android tablet in 2010 as initially expected. PC World reports that Lenovo US COO Rory Read has dismissed a tablet based on Android 2.2 for the same reasons that LG has dropped its plans for a Froyo-based tablet. In Readís view, Android 2.2 is not built for tablets and that Lenovoís timeframe will be dependent on Googleís Android 3.0 release, nick-named Honeycomb.

Italian Apple PR: Apple to live stream today's event
With only hours to spare, it seems that Apple has announced its intentions to live stream today's press event -- at least it's been announced to Italian customers.
According to Italian site setteB.IT, Apple has issued a media alert stating their intention to live stream today's big announcements. Macstories has posted the full text of the press release, which states (Italian-to-English translation from Babelfsh):

Street View: Google will künftig gänzlich auf WLAN-Scanning verzichten
Google will offensichtlich das Sammeln von Daten über WLAN-Hotspots für den Kartendienst Street View endgültig stoppen. Das geht aus einem Bericht der kanadischen Datenschutzbeauftragten Jennifer Stoddart hervor. Wegen der Datensammlung war es weltweit zu Protesten gekommen. Im Juli wurde deshalb die Hard- und Software für die WLAN-Analyse vorübergehend aus den Street-View-Autos entfernt.

Was könnte Mac OS X 10.7 «Lion» an neuen Features bringen?
Mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit wird Apple heute Abend das nächste Major-Release von Mac OS X, Version 10.7 «Lion» ein erstes Mal der Öffentlichkeit präsentieren. Abgesehen von Kleinigkeiten sind bisher kaum Details über mögliche Neuerungen des nächsten Mac-Systems an die Öffentlichkeit gedrungen. Galaxy Tab reaches Verizon November 11 to take on iPad
Verizon today became the first American carrier to commit to a release date to the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Its version of the Android 2.2 slate should reach stores on November 11 and will cost $600 without a contract. Apple bietet Live-Stream zum «Back to the Mac»-Special-Event
Wie bereits beim Music-Special-Event im September wird auch heute Abend ab 19 Uhr MESZ ein LiveStream der Keynote auf apple.com verfügbar sein. Apple support forums inadvertently leak 10/20 product announcements
All props to Polish blog spidersweb.pl this morning, as they did a bit of sneaky digging into Apple's support forums to turn up compelling evidence of some of the products we expect to see later today. Knowing that when the forum administrators create new support categories, the forum URLs get sequential numbers. Simply editing the address of the forum site to go past the most recent addition (the Apple TV, at #276) reveals a 'Reserved 10 20' forum -- aha!

Samsung Omnia 7 vs HTC HD7 und 7 Mozart (mit Videos)
Diese drei hier kämpfen mit um den Windows Phone 7 Thron: Samsung Omnia 7, HTC HD7 und 7 Mozart. Grund genug sie sich von allen Seiten mal genau anzusehen. Plans to launch a new MacBook Air and iLife '11 have been virtually confirmed this morning both by unofficial leaks and by Apple itself. Google digitalisiert Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer

In den Diskussionsforen auf der Apple-Webseite wurden im Hintergrund offenbar bereits Unterforen für iLife ‘11 und für ein neues MacBook Air eingerichtet. Micron bringt LCOS-Projektormodul V100 für Handyhersteller

Micron hat ein Winz-Projektormodul entwickelt, das in naher Zukunft mehr Handys mit integriertem Projektor nach sich ziehen dürfte. Das Modul mit dem blumigen Namen V100 bringt einen LCOS-Projektor mit QVGA-Auflösung (320 mal 240 Pixel) in einem Gehäuse von 33 mal 31 mal 12 Millimetern unter und verbraucht übersichtliche 1,5 Watt, aber vor allem wickelt V100 alle nötigen Rechenschritte ab, die zur Projektion eines Bildes nötig sind, die Handy-CPU wird also nicht weiter belastet. Wann und zu welchem Preis das Teil zu den Herstellern kommt, ist aber noch unklar.

Apple: Designpatent für MacBook Air-Gehäuse und Patent auf iChat-Videofunktion
Voraussichtlich heute wird Apple ein neues MacBook Air vorstellen, das neben neuen Hardware-Innereien auch ein neues Gehäuse bekommen soll. Passenderweise wurde Apple nun ein Design-Patent für das aktuell verfügbar MacBook Air verliehen.

I know I'm extremely late to the game, but I only just downloaded and started playing Doodle Jump two weeks ago. Since then, I've become addicted to it, both on my iPhone and iPad.
Doodle Jump has been updated to version 1.24, which introduces a new Halloween theme: Doodlestein! The update includes new monsters (zombies, vampires, and witches among them) in the Halloween theme, plus broken bone platforms and a broompack (a jetpack made from a witch's broom).

Es gibt Dinge, die einfach zu sperrig sind, um sie vom Urlaubstrip mitzubringen und die sich entsprechend auch nicht für die Postzustellung eignen. Und manchmal, wenn auch selten, ist das wirklich bedauerlich. Zum Beispiel bei den lächerlich günstigen Technics MKII aus Japan. Oder dem Massagesessel mit iPhone-Steurung, der jetzt in den USA für rund 5.000 Dollar (rund 3.640 Dollar) zu haben ist. Allein wegen des Schabernacks, den man mit dem Acutouch HT-9500 so treiben könnte, wenn die werten Kollegen darauf Platz nehmen.

Yahoos Gewinn wächst dank Kostensenkungen um 113 Prozent
Yahoo hat gestern nach Börsenschluss die Zahlen für das dritte Quartal vorgelegt. Aufgrund weiterer Kostensenkungen weist die Bilanz (PDF) einen Nettogewinn von 396 Millionen Dollar (287 Millionen Euro) oder 0,29 Dollar je Aktie aus. Das entspricht einem Plus von 113 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal. Damit übertrifft Yahoo die Erwartungen von Analysten.

Nachdem es sich ausgeshattert hat, gibt es jetzt anscheinend einen Greenp0ison-Jailbreak für das neue Apple TV der es dann irgendwann hoffentlich ermöglichen wird, Apps drauf zu installieren. Bis das so komfortabel One-Click-mässig wie beim iPhone geht, dauert es aber wohl noch ein wenig, der Anfang scheint aber gemacht zu sein.

Man traps himself in toilet trying to retrieve cellphone, has time to re-evaluate life priorities (video)
When we say this chap was trapped in the toilet, we don't mean he was stuck in the bathroom, he literally jammed his arm down the porcelain-encased pipe. The poor gentleman from Jiangsu Province in China was clearly in desperate need of his cellphone, as not even the typically repugnant idea of diving down for it was enough to prevent him from trying to chase the thing down. Good news is that emergency services rescued him with only minor cuts and bruises to his arm, though we suspect the injury to his ego will take a long, long time to heal.

Apple TV jailbroken again with Greenpois0n, lets Shatter off the hook
The iOS dev community already shattered the new Apple TV, but now it's been poisoned, too. What does this mean for you? Angelbird introduces Wings SSD card with SSD buffer
Coming this Halloween is a PCI-Express card offering up to four user-installable on-board SSD expansion drive modules, with an option for an embedded 16GB or 32GB SSD module to improve performance. Called Wings, the card comes with its own on-board OS called Virtue that can boot on any Mac, Linux or Windows machine and features a disk configuration utility to allow users to configure the card as they like. Throughput can reach up to 1080Mb/second read speed, 900Mb write on a fully-populated card.

TerreStar makes it official, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Teetering no longer. According to Reuters, satellite phone maker TerreStar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to protect itself from liabilities in the range of $1.6 billion. As expected, a restructuring is in order, with Blackstone Group LP providing financial advice for such a move. One of TerreStars' creditors, EchoStar, is offering $75 million in financing to help keep the company operate while it goes through the bankruptcy. Shame that it's the icing on the cake for its Genus

ASUS' ultra-thin RT-N6U router hits FCC, adherence to diet in question
It's a pretty long trip down memory lane for us to return to ASUS' ultra-thin RT-56U router; last time we saw it was behind plexiglass at CeBIT in March. At long last it's returned to the spotlight, only this time that luminance is provided by the FCC's notorious labs. The dual-band Gigabit Wireless-N device gets just one image -- and given the unflattering angle, we're not quite sure if it's retained that slender figure. Facebook's Hewitt: Android no more open than iPhone
Facebook's well-known developer Joe Hewitt today dismissed Google VP Andy Rubin's claims that Android was more open than iOS by pointing out limitations in Google's philosophy. He noted that Android's source code is closed only until major releases and doesn't allow outside contributions to the main release. The phone OS was a far cry from Firefox or pure Linux, since Google held virtually all the cards as to how the OS progressed.

Report: Android ad revenue beats iPhone, iOS and smartphone market still growing
Millenial Media has released its latest report on cross-platform mobile advertising, and the iPhone has lost another step on the Android platform. According to Millenial's reporting, revenue for advertising from the Android platform has exceeded iPhone-only revenue. Palm Pre 2 hits FCC in CDMA and North American GSM flavors
So the Pre 2 has been announced for SFR in France and Verizon in the States, along with an unlocked model for developers but so far, we'd only seen one of the three in the FCC. Well, here are the other two: on the left, the P102EWW, and on the right, the P102UNA. Palm's naming convention is a little strange, so it probably bears explaining again -- the "P102" tells you that it's a Pre 2, while "EWW" indicates CDMA and "UNA" indicates North American GSM / UMTS. Consumer Reports' Mobile Shopper a mixed bag
This is the second foray into iPhone territory by Consumer Reports. The first app pretty much duplicated the currently-available online content, and was free. This second app, called Consumer Reports Mobile Shopper is US $9.99, and puts the impeccable brand and product reviews in a more iOS-specific form.
The app allows you to browse through CR ratings of thousands of products, and allows searches by brand name or model. You can also scan the UPC bar-code using the iPhone's camera. The app also gives you best prices both online and locally using PriceGrab

New Kindle app for Macs adds many desired features
I do most of my reading of books purchased from Amazon on my iPad, but there are times where my laptop and desktop Mac would be just dandy for catching up on my non dead-tree efforts.
Amazon has released a new version of Kindle for Mac, and it brings the Mac version up to feature parity with the iOS versions. The new version includes these capabilities:
Add, edit or delete notes and highlights
Search for words or phrases in a book
Multi-column text is now supported
The overall look and feel are improved and a bit more contemporary
The update is free of course, and a quick download. I'd like to use the Apple iBookstore more often,

Old Sierra games coming to iPad as unofficial web apps
Sierra's old-school adventure games of the '80s bring back many memories of days where finding cheats and walk-throughs were hard to come by, and a binder of scribbled clues sat by my tiny monitor. Intel announces plans to spend up to $8 billion on U.S. factory upgrades

Yojimbo was the first "collection box" app that I ever used. It is still the easiest app I know to grab bits of information from anywhere on your Mac to save it for later. The lack of an iOS app has been a big drawback.
Being able to access Yojimbo on the iPad may be surprising, but it's great news, and I look forward to putting it through the paces. iSuppli: Apple to sell 120 million iPads by 2012
Many analysts were disappointed when Apple announced 4.2 million iPads sold in Q4 during the conference call yesterday. The consensus -- or hope -- among many on Wall Street was a 5m+ iPad quarter. But if iSuppli's report today is any indication, the Wall Street boys have nothing to worry about when it comes to future iPad sales. iSuppli states that due to increasing component availability (a lack of which, they suggest, is the only thing that kept Apple from selling more iPads), Apple is set to sell a total of 13.8 million units in 2010, up from 12.9 million units.

iPhone 4 N92 prototype spotted with SIM slot?
Apple's elusive CDMA iPhone 4, known to most as the N92, may have been spotted in a leak. The early version of the device, part of the DVT (design verification test) stage, purportedly arrived briefly in a repair shop in Vietnam loaded with the same Inferno test firmware Apple uses but identifying it as a new "N92DVT" variant. Richy Rich was told that it still had a micro SIM card slot, supporting theories that it may be dual-mode and either provide basic world roaming or serve as a true every-carrier model that replaces the existing iPhone.

Intel: Neue Fab und Investitionen bis zu 8 Mrd. US-Dollar

AT&T hints non-iPad data plans may get cheaper
AT&T's Emerging Devices product development VP David Haight today said at the 4G World expo today that the company might back away from its traditionally high data-only plans and more towards those like for the iPad. While the iPad was successful, most other devices weren't selling that well because of the traditional US carrier model of $60 per month and an emphasis on contract-bound, locked devices. Apple's special plans were better, he told PCMag, since they were not only much less expensive at $25 but didn't force users to pay for service they didn't need.
