The future of Tweetie and the Mac
A tweet from @MacHeist provides clarification on another tweet from Twitter founder Evan Williams. Williams commented a few days ago that Twitter was not "actively investing" in Tweetie for the Mac at this time.
Williams' tweet caused quite a stir. Since the acquisition of Tweetie for iPhone and the app's conversion into Twitter's official app for iPhone and iPad, the Mac version of Tweetie has collected a good bit of dust and now lacks the up-to-date features found in its mobile siblings.

RIM co-CEO defends 7-inch tablets, doubts iPhone numbers
Outspoken RIM co-chief Jim Balsillie accused Apple of deception today in a response to Steve Jobs' attack on seven-inch tablets and touting the iPhone's win over BlackBerry in the summer. He claimed Jobs was spinning his stereotypical "distortion field" and insisted that seven-inch slates like his own BlackBerry PlayBook would be a major force in the market in spite of Apple's success with a near 10-inch design. webOS 2.0 review
When it comes to webOS 2.0 (now actually called HP webOS), it almost felt like we'd never see the version number, let alone get to review it. It's been an intense few months for Palm: after floundering in the early part of the smartphone wars, it was scooped up by HP for a tidy sum of $1.2b. PlayStation Move Shooting Attachment out now for $20, still blindingly beautiful

Apple number 65 on Newsweek's list of green companies
Newsweek has published their list of the most environmentally-friendly companies, and Apple is ranked number 65 out of 500. While it didn't make the top 10 (Dell is number one), Apple improved significantly from last year when it placed 133rd. The rankings considered a number of scores, including green score, environmental impact and green policies.
Other tech companies in the top 10 include HP, IBM, Intel, Sprint, Adobe, Applied Materials and Yahoo!.

Curio 7.0 adds new mindmapping charts, advanced tags
Zengobi has launched an upgrade of its mindmapping and task management software, Curio 7.0. Various tools let users brainstorm, take notes and draw and paint. Freeform spaces can be used for organizing tasks and ideas. Curio 7.0 introduces project sections and Organizer folders, as well as left map, right map and org-chart mindmap styles. Nokia N8 seeing no pent-up demand on home turf?
Nokia's just-shipping N8 flagship may have had no real effect on sales, an analyst note from Pacific Crest's James Faucette said today. An investigation of interest in Western Europe has shown "little to no pent-up demand." He warned that the pricing was too close to that for Apple and Google devices, with only Symbian loyalists likely to buy in.

News: Watershed debuts Waterproof Bag for iPad
Watershed has debuted its new Waterproof Submersible Bag for iPad. The bag features a watertight top seal, a play-through plastic screen cover that allows the iPad to be used underwater, a front flap with button closure, and an included shoulder strap. Watershed has yet to add the Waterproof Submersible Bag for iPad to its website but is currently taking phone orders; the Bag itself is priced at $97.

Keynote Pro has released Aurora for Keynote, a new theme tied to Apple's presentation software. It includes 26 master slide templates covering a variety of purposes, with new Citation and Compare & Contrast layouts. iShred jumps up the charts thanks to viral video
Last Saturday, we posted this video of the band Atomic Tom singing with their iPhones on the B train over the East River. Since then, the video has gone viral, nabbing more than a million views on YouTube. But the band isn't the only group benefiting from the attention -- we heard from the developers of iShred, the guitar app seen in the video, and apparently just being seen in the video has had a huge effect for them as well. The app has jumped from #84 to #4 on the App Store music app charts, and has reached the #65 app overall.

Metal cover serves as DIY iPhone backplate
Worried about the glass back of your iPhone 4 getting smashed? If you have $13 and a few minutes, Hong Kong manufacturer CNN (Cellular Nationwide Network) can supply you with a nice looking aluminum backplate to replace the glass.
According to the original "how-to" post on Unplggd, the metal back is incredibly easy to install. You just remove the two screws on either side of the Dock Connector port, pop out the glass, slide on the metal cover and Boom! You have an attractive, custom iPhone 4. The sides are even beveled for a more comfortable using experience.

Power mad modder rips the keys out of his Epic 4G, calls it a gamepad (video)
Sometimes a mod is more than just a mod: it's a manifesto. When Phawx over at BrainLazy decided to take an X-Acto knife to his Epic 4G's keypad, he knew what he was doing: both challenging Apple's place in the world of cellphone-based gaming and encouraging other manufacturers to step up to the plate. Harman Kardon tweaks formula with SoundSticks III
Harman Kardon today updated one of its seminal computer speaker lines. The SoundSticks III preserve the sound and the distinctive, Apple-themed translucent look but addresses some of its common quirks. The Symbian Foundation faced another setback today as Symbian CEO Lee Williams has resigned his Executive Director position effective immediately. He would only give "personal reasons" for the departure. Tim Holbrow, the Foundation's CFO, is replacing Williams.

Verizon rolls out 3G Network Extender for $250

Does open matter?
Much has been made of Steve Jobs' presence on the earnings call yesterday. In particular, there's a little nerd slapfight going on between Apple and Google around the "openness" of their platforms. As Steve said yesterday, "open doesn't always win." Andy Rubin, the father of Android at Google, later reportedly tweeted the code needed to compile Android, thus jabbing at Apple by illustrating that anyone could freely download and compile the Android OS. Yeah, and how many "average" people do you know that'll do that? Exactly none.

Microsoft Office 365 puts full-power Office, Exchange on web
Microsoft's cloud app efforts grew more serious today with a launch for Office 365. The service gives web access to a full-strength version of Office on the web, including simultaneous collaboration, as well as online versions of Exchange, Lync and SharePoint. TweetDeck CEO: Developing for Android "not a nightmare"
During yesterday's classic tirade by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during the 4Q Earnings Call, there was a rant about the fragmentation of the Android OS that included a reference to "TwitterDeck's" (actually TweetDeck's) recent chart showing how many hardware platforms they must contend with during development. Caveat emptor: Custom Android handsets all the rage in Germany?
This isn't the first customizable phone we've laid our eyes on, and we've always been a fan of the concept -- even if the execution sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. Apparently there's a small startup residing in Germany called Synapse that will sell you a custom Android 2.2 handset, complete with 4-inch multitouch touchscreen, with prices starting around €434 ($600). We say apparently because, try as we might, we only got the Drupal-powered website to appear once this morning. Indeed, the tipster couldn't even get it to appear more than once himself, which is why he sent us a screen shot. Thanks!

Symbian boss steps down effective immediately
Citing "personal reasons," the Symbian Foundation has just announced that executive directory Lee Williams has left the company -- yes, "left," as in he's not going to stick around for a while to manage a transition. Williams has been steeped in Symbian for some time, having previously led Nokia's S60 business -- but the dude's been floating around the upper ranks of the entire mobile industry for ages, doing time with Motorola (through its Symbol acquisition) and Palm / PalmSource by way of Be. He's been replaced by the organization's reigning CFO, Tim Holbrow, and it appears that the appointment is permanent; what this means for Symbian's roadmap (if anything) is unclear, but we'd love to hear the backs

Rumor: Apple field testing revised iPhone 4

AMD demos Llano Fusion CPU handling three tasks at once
AMD at its in-house Technical Forum late yesterday showed off a fully functioning example of its Llano Fusion processor (video below). The CPU and graphics hybrid was given a full workload and smoothly decoded 1080p Blu-ray video, calculated Pi to the 32 millionth decimal place and generated particle effects all while using the graphics and general-purpose GPU functions of the chip instead of raw CPU power. A check of the DirectCompute stats saw it running at about 30 gigaflops of combined speed, or multiple times what a regular processor would do.

Apple sells 250k Apple TVs in six weeks
While Apple TV sales were apparently not published in Apple's quarterly earnings release, during the much-ballyhooed investor conference call yesterday, Steve Jobs noted that as many as 250,000 Apple TVs have been sold since its debut last month.
To put that number into perspective, in the first month of sales of the original Apple TV (January 2007), Apple took orders of around 100,000 units. Also, prime contender Roku has reported sales of about 500,000 of its devices after being on the market for a year-and-change.

Die morgige Vorstellung von Mac OS X 10.7 erfüllt mich mit Langeweile und Desinteresse. Mac OS X fühlt sich alt an. Es erfüllt seine Arbeit ohne viel Aufsehen zu erregen und ist verlässlich. Neue Software für den Arbeitsknecht interessiert mich kaum. Ich habe mich im OS X eingerichtet und arbeite täglich damit. Verbesserungen interessieren mich nicht mehr. Das Mac OS X und die komplette Klasse an mausbasierten Desktop-Rechnern ist aus meinem Fokus gerutscht. Wie konnte es dazu kommen?
Am Mac bin ich seit Mac OS X 10.2. Davor verwendete ich FreeBSD, OS/2 und PC/Geos. Auch eine kleine Windows NT-Phase war dabei. HTC tablet rumored pushed to spring 2011 after Google snub
HTC may have faced a rare rebuff from Google that would stall its tablet efforts, a JPMorgan analyst said today. Google is said to be focusing most of its attention on Motorola's tablet as a halo device for Android 3.0 and LG's Optimus Pad for Honeycomb (tentatively 3.5), pushing the internal readiness of HTC's own design from December to sometime in spring 2011. Piper Jaffray raises Apple price target to $429
Piper Jaffray has raised the price target on shares of AAPL to US$429 following yesterday's financial report from Apple. The company posted its first $20 billion quarter, beating expected earnings.
In addition, Piper Jaffray raised FY11 revenue growth rate from 24% to 32%. The approximate 14.1 million iPhones Apple sold during its fiscal Q4 came with a tradeoff, argues Financial Alchemist blogger/analyst Turley Muller. Ah, Vertu, where would we be without you? Richer, to be sure, but so very bored. Vertu's QWERTY-packing Constellation Quest has just gotten the FCC's stamp of approval, and in addition to the typical beauty shots the FCC includes, there's also a detailed manual that shows the phone to be running some heavily skinned version of Symbian. The phone has HSDPA data and WiFi, and Vertu is even packing along a 32GB microSD card. Apple retail presence continues to grow and produce
Years ago, when Apple announced they were opening retail stores I don't know that anyone expected them to be such a resounding success. But yesterday's call confirmed this fact, as nearly every metric was up: sales, traffic and number of new stores. The Apple retail engine is firing on all cylinders.
Some highlights:
Revenues are up 75% since last year. Last year revenues were $2.04 billion, and this year they were $3.57 billion.
Mac sales went up from 670,000 to 874,000, a 30% increase.

Qantas to offer in-fight iPads on Jetstar flights
MarketWatch is reporting that iPads are to be offered to passengers as in-flight entertainment on Qantas Airways' Jetstar flights, according to a company official speaking to the Dow Jones Newswires. The move is to draw would-be flyers to Jetstar in an increasingly competitive market for budget airlines operating in and around Australia and Asia.
"We're in the final stages of putting in place what would be a broader roll out across the network. We're in ongoing discussion with the manufacturer around a more integrated network proposition," a Jetstar spokesman said in an interview Monday.

Intel plans new US factory, upgrading others to 22nm tech
Intel stepped up its chip production on Tuesday with plans to open a new US fabrication plant. The Oregon factory should be ready in 2013 and will primarily produce chips for research and development as Intel advances its designs. The fab as well as other efforts should lead to about 800 to 1,000 new jobs.

Analysts split on iPad's future after Q4 results
Research firms are significantly divided on the future of iPad sales in the wake of Apple's Q4 results, which included roughly 4.19 million iPads. Although the number fell under analyst estimates, in one case by over 2 million, the figure still represents an increase over Q3, and is taken to indicate plenty of potential. iSuppli has raised its 2010 forecast from 12.9 million to 13.8 million, claiming that production is the only major obstacle, not demand.

Camp Logos took me from know-nothing to advanced
Over the weekend, I attended the Camp Logos training seminar for Logos Bible Study software. I have been to lots of seminars, but this was my first one specifically about software, and I went in not really knowing what to expect. I was completely blown away by how useful it was.
When Logos for Mac came out last year, I spent a little bit of time using it, but I never really got into it. Logos 4 is a major redesign, and it was recently released for Mac. This is software that I could use on a daily basis, and learning more about it would save me a great deal of time, so it seemed like a good fit.

NEC has quietly put out a new 23-inch LCD, the MultiSync EX231W, that it promises will use technology to gain its green credentials. WD ships first internal 3TB hard drive
Western Digital landed a symbolic milestone today by becoming the first to ship a hinted at 3TB internal hard drive. The Caviar Green 3TB packs 750GB per disk platter and is tailored to 64-bit platforms like Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 64-bit that can see and boot from drives larger than 2.19TB. Android now making more money than iOS on ad network
Android became more profitable for at least one ad network than then iPhone today as Millenial Media today reported that Google's platform was generating more revenue than the iPhone. A 26 percent boost to calls for ads, along with a slight jump to 29 percent in traffic, pushed it past the iPhone in September. The gain was helped by Motorola, whose original Droid and combined effect pushed it past Samsung to become the second-most popular phone maker on the network at 15.3 percent, behind Apple's 30.22 percent.

I have to say, I'm a little more interested lately in longer and more developed experiences for the iOS devices, which is one reason why I loved Game Dev Story so much. But there is still some space in my app diet for quick, pick-up-and-play experiences, and Tap Disc is one of those. Actually, "pick-up-and-play" might not be the right phrase to use -- there is a lengthy tutorial with the game, and lots of things are happening. VMware übertrifft Erwartungen von Analysten

Gerüchte über OS X 10.7: Scrollverhalten aus iOS, neues Quick Look
Morgen Abend wird Apple der Öffentlichkeit einen ersten Blick auf die nächste Version von Mac OS X gewähren. Bisher sind noch keine Informationen über die Neuerungen am Mac-System nach aussen gedrungen. MacStories will nun allerdings erste Kleinigkeiten über OS X 10.7 «Lion» erfahren haben. Einer angeblich zuverlässigen Quelle zufolge wird Apple das aus iOS bekannte Scrollverhalten in OS X integrieren. Dies beinhaltet neu gestaltete Scrollbalken sowie die Möglichkeit, über das Ende einer Seite hinaus zu scrollen, wobei der Inhalt dann zurückschwingt. Wie bei einigen iOS-Apps soll sich dadurch der Seiteninhalt eines Fensters aktualisieren lassen («Pull to refresh»). Neuerungen soll es auch bei der Dateivorschau Quick Look geben. Angeblich integriert Apple die Quick-Look-Funktion in das Spotlight-Menü. Microsoft hat bekanntgegeben, dass Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie die Firma verlässt. Das teilte Steve Ballmer seinen Angestellten in einem offenen Brief mit. Ozzie hatte den Posten von Bill Gates übernommen und Microsoft intensiv in Richtung Cloud gesteuert. Gründe für die Entscheidung Ozzies nennt der Brief nicht, Ballmer erwähnt allerdings, dass der Großteil von Ozzies Visionen zur Cloud bereits bei Microsoft entwickelt wird. Für eine Übergangszeit soll er noch bleiben, der "einzigartige" Posten des Chief Software Architects soll aber nicht mehr neu besetzt werden.

Schweiz mit geringstem Windows- und höchstem Mac-Marktanteil Europas
Nirgends in Europa ist der Marktanteil von Microsofts Windows-Betriebssystem so tief wie in der Schweiz. Dies geht aus einer Studie von AT Internet hervor, die Marktanteile der Betriebssysteme wurden anhand von Zugriffszahlen im Internet ermittelt. Im August 2010 kam Microsoft europaweit auf einen Marktanteil von 90.9 Prozent (minus 2.4 Prozent im Vergleich zu 2009), dahinter folgten Apple mit 7.6 (plus 2.2 %) und Linux mit 0.9 Prozent. Zu Apples Marktanteil steuerte OS X den grössten Anteil bei. Der Erhebung zufolge besitzt Mac OS X (Intel) einen Marktanteil von 5.7 Prozent, Mac OS X (PPC) kommt auf 0.5 und iOS auf 1.4 Prozent. In der Schweiz kommt Apple auf den höchsten Marktanteil in ganz Europa. Hierzulande erreichen Microsoft 79.3 % (minus 5 %) und Apple 19.3 % (plus 5 %) Marktanteil. IBM steigert Umsatz und Gewinn im dritten Quartal

IPv4-Adressen zu 95 Prozent verbraucht

Apple meldet Rekordumsatz von 20,34 Milliarden Dollar
Apple hat im vierten Geschäftsquartal 2010 (bis 25. September) 20,34 Milliarden Dollar (14,6 Milliarden Euro) umgesetzt. Gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal stiegen die Einnahmen um 67 Prozent. Der Gewinn kletterte in diesem Zeitraum um 70 Prozent auf 4,31 Milliarden Dollar (3,1 Milliarden Euro) oder 4,64 Dollar je Aktie.

Adobe hat heute Nacht die Desktop Publishing-Lösung InDesign auf Version 7.0.3 aktualisiert. Apple fährt Rekordquartal ein: 20 Milliarden Dollar Umsatz, 4 Milliarden Gewinn
Apple hat gestern seine Quartalszahlen für das vierte Quartal vorgelegt und sie sind ein neuer Rekord in der Firmengeschichte: 20 Milliarden Dollar Umsatz und 4 Milliarden Gewinn. Dazu beigetragen haben 14,1 Millionen verkaufte iPhones (fast doppelt so viel wie im Vorjahr), 4,2 Millionen iPads (was ein bisschen weniger ist als von Analysten erwartet) und 9 Millionen iPods (ebenfalls weniger als erwartet). Die Anzahl der verkauften Macs (Laptops und Desktops) lag bei 3,89 Millionen, 27 Prozent mehr als im letzten Jahr. Determining Game Center's current popularity
The always insightful Stuart Dredge over at MobileEntertainment has crunched some numbers on Game Center's actual popularity. Since Apple's own gaming social network on the iPhone launched, I've heard lots of different things from developers in terms of how they're implementing and using it. Some developers jumped in head-first, bringing all of their apps on board quickly, while others have only brought one or two apps on board at a time, waiting and seeing what their users are into. Apple's Mac OS X Lion teaser on Wednesday could see it merge a handful of iOS interface elements if a news tip is an indicator. Bose is the latest, launching what it claims is its first single-ear Bluetooth headset. The aural implant carries the family name and touted audio quality / proprietary technology, but functionality-wise, it's not much different than your run-of-the-mill earpiece. We've written about MacBook decals in the past, but I couldn't resist showing this one to you guys and gals (especially the comic book fans out there). Stuff Off Decals is selling a Justice League sticker for MacBooks. Jobs: We don't want to be like Nokia
Apple is aimed exclusively at competing in the high-end smartphone market, not in a larger arena, according to CEO Steve Jobs. The executive made a rare appearance during Apple's Q4 results call, where he specifically compared the iPhone against Nokia's output. Apple is not trying to mimic Nokia, he said, which leads global cellphone sales with cheaper devices. "We don't know how to make a great smartphone at $50," Jobs remarked.

Apple CEO: Google's claims of openness are "disingenuous"
Google is being "disingenuous" when it tries to claim openness as an advantage for Android, Apple's Steve Jobs said during a rare appearance in the company's fourth quarter 2010 results. He accused Google of sidestepping its own real problems with Android fragmentation, saying that the real debate was over whether or not to go integrated. Windows is "open" in supporting many forms of hardware, but it provides a consistent experience; Android can't claim that as there are too many custom interfaces and too many phones, leaving the user to "figure it out."

Driverless taxi gets called with an iPad
This is just wild! A group of researchers in Berlin have been working on "autonomous cars" for a while. Those, of course, are cars that drive themselves, and as you can see above, this one uses a variety of equipment to monitor the road and environment. It then drives by itself according to all of that information.
The Berlin team has pushed the idea ahead by hooking the car up to an iPad. In the video posted after the break, you can see how it all works. The iPad's GPS location is sent out to the car, and then the user can even track the car's movement and scanner information directly from the iPad. Apple's Jobs trashes Android tablets, rules out 7-inch iPad
Apple chief Steve Jobs during a surprise appearance in the company's summer 2010 results call explained much of the company's strategy on tablets and dismissed seven-inch tablets, Android tablets as well as any prospect of a seven-inch iPad. He claimed that the size was too small to create viable tablet apps as it provided less than half the screen area of a 9.7-inch tablet like the iPad. Seven inches cuts down on the number of elements you can put on screen and would only work if you could make your own fingers smaller, Jobs said.

Jobs claims 300,000+ titles in App Store
Speaking during the company's Q4 conference call, Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed that the App Store has cracked 300,000 in available in apps. The number was initially thought to have been hit by Saturday, but statistics later suggested that Apple had only achieved closer to 279,000 by that point. iPad-equipped Quatto costume for Halloween
Ok, this is a little weird, and a little gross, but if you're as big a fan of Total Recall as I am, you'll love it. One of the characters in that movie, named Quatto, actually lives in the stomach of another character, and rather than recreate the creepy effect with puppets or makeup, YouTube user minimatefactory just put some high resolution video of the character on his iPad, and then strapped it to his shirt to wear around.
The effect isn't completely realistic, of course (it looks like he's got a video screen on his stomach), but it is a clever Halloween costume, and clever goes a long way after a few drinks at a Halloween pa

Steve Jobs hit today's earnings call with the power of words. In a tone that could be described as "righteous anger" or perhaps just "reppin," Steve launched into a five minute rant that hit hard against RIM's entire business model, Android sales numbers and software fragmentation, and the impending wave of Android tablets. Remember my roundup of iPad clock apps a little over a month ago? Well, there was one app that I left out, but shouldn't have -- Dock Clock (US$1.99). There were a lot of readers who pointed out the app to me, so I decided to take a look.
Created by developer Dariusz Halko, Dock Clock is an iPad clock app that provides multiple alarms, skinning, weather forecasts, and moon phases. One feature I love is that you can set a "dim at night" period to keep the app from lighting up your bedroom while you're trying to sleep. Apple TV hits 250,000 in sales, says Steve Jobs
Deep within the heart of Apple's fiscal earnings call Q&A session, straight from the mouth of CEO Steve Jobs: "I can report that we've sold a quarter million Apple TVs." Quite an impressive number for a device that's only been out for 18 days but by no means on par with the likes of some other Apple debuts (the iPad, for instance, sold 300,000 on day one). Ray Ozzie, Microsoft's Chief Software Architect, is calling it quits
Microsoft has just announced that Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie is leaving the company, in the form of an open letter from Steve Ballmer to Microsoft employees. Ray, who succeeded Bill Gates in his currently held position, is famous for his focus on moving Microsoft into the cloud. As recently as June we saw Ray on stage at D8 with Steve Ballmer, and there's no indication given in the open letter as to Ray's reasons for leaving, though Steve does point out that much of Ray's vision for the cloud is already in progress at Microsoft. Apple Q4 breakdown shows leaps in desktops, foreign sales
Alongside formally announced results, Apple has posted a detailed breakdown (PDF) of the figures from its fourth fiscal quarter. These include a 37 percent year-over-year increase in North American revenue to $7.186 billion, and a 69 percent jump in European figures to $5.458 billion. Still more dramatic is a 121 percent rise in Japanese revenue to $1.401 billion, and a 157 percent leap in the rest of the Asia-Pacific market, resulting in $2.732 billion.
