Apple's 14.1 million iPhones crush BlackBerry in summer
Apple in its quarterly results revealed that it had blown past RIM in smartphone sales. The company's 14.1 million iPhone shipments in the summer were enough for it to trump RIM's 12.1 million BlackBerries over its own summer quarter, which finished a month earlier. The upset is one of the few seen since the iPhone went on sale, as Apple so far is only known to have passed RIM once early into the iPhone's history.

News: Jobs joins conference call, declares Android tablets ‘DOA’
Making a rare appearance on the company’s Q4 2010 earnings conference call, Apple CEO Steve Jobs made several comments regarding tablet competitors to the iPad that have been announced but have yet to ship. Jobs said that there were only a handful of credible entrants out of the many tablets that have been announced, and keyed on the fact that most of them use 7-inch screens. Apple has announced the results of its fourth fiscal quarter, which ended on September 25th. The company is claiming "record" revenue of $20.34 billion, and a net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share. For comparison Apple notes that in Q4 2009 it posted $12.21 billion in revenue, $2.53 billion in profit, and $2.77 per diluted share. Gross margin fell this year, slipping from 41.8 percent to 36.9. International sales amounted for more than half of the company's revenue at 57 percent.

CDMA iPhone in final test stage, still carrying SIM slot?
The CDMA-based iPhone expected for Verizon is in the very last stages of testing before it moves on to production, a news tip claimed today. What's known in Apple's profiling system as iPhone 3,2 has supposedly entered the "AP" phase of testing, which involves final hardware and only some polish necessary for software. As confirmed in the past, BGR noted that Apple usually undergoes a rough Engineering Validation Test (EVT) and a Design Validation Test (DVT, the stolen iPhone 4's stage) beforehand.

Ad Age labels Apple 'Marketer of the Decade'
Instead of giving Apple a Marketer of the Year award, Advertising Age has presented the company with its first-ever Marketer of the Decade title. "Apple's influence on business models across industries from music and computing to entertainment and advertising, along with its impact on popular culture, media and, of course, marketing, has been indelible," Ad Age writes. Apple is noted to have forced changes in several industries in particular: music players, smartphones, mobile apps and tablets.

Apple releases Q4 results: $20.34B revenue, $4.31B profits
Top line: hell of a beat. Apple today reports earnings of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 a share, in the fiscal fourth quarter, versus $1.82 a share in the year-ago quarter. Street guess was $4.08 a share on sales of $18.90 billion, according to Thomson Reuters, so like I said: hell of a beat.
3.98 million Macs were sold during the quarter (not 4M, but close, very close) 14.1m iPhones (almost 2x the previous year's number), 4.19m iPads sold in Q4.
Looking ahead, Peter Oppenheimer forecasts $23B in revenue and $4.80 per share earnings in the holiday quarter. Given the degree to which this quarter beat the predictions whoa.

Heute Abend nach Börsenschluss in New York veröffentlichte Apple den Geschäftsbericht für das vierte Fiskalquartal 2010. In der Zeitspanne zwischen Juli und September verbuchte Apple Einnahmen in der Höhe von 20.343 Milliarden Dollar. Der Gewinn stieg auf 4.31 Milliarden (4.64 US-Dollar pro Aktie). Apple verkaufte 3’885’000 Mac-Computer (plus 27 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal), 4’188’000 iPads, 14’102’000 iPhones (plus 91 Prozent) und 9’051’000 iPods (minus 11 Prozent). Die Bruttogewinnspanne sank von 41.8 auf 36.9 Prozent, die internationalen Verkäufe steuerten 57 Prozent der Einnahmen bei.

Safari Extension highlight: Stop animated GIFs, make your own CSS
Earlier today I was looking for a Safari Extensions to that could stop animated GIFs. I'd be even happier if the extension would also allow me to override CSS on a particular page. After a fruitless search of the official Safari Extensions page, Google turned up both Deanimator and User CSS.
Deanimator takes care of my first request. Namely, it stops animated GIFs dead. Meanwhile, User CSS lets me override a page's CSS. I can use it to change fonts or colors, hide ads and more. Both are quite useful.

PlayStation 3 Netflix update hitting XMBs across the USA, say goodbye to the discs
As promised, the new discless Netflix app for Sony's PlayStation 3 is rolling out across the land, so all should see a convenient icon under the video tab on the XMB, leading directly to movies in 1080p with 5.1 audio. Droid 2 Global ads now running on Verizon's 800 number
Whoever said being on hold was a bad thing? Verizon customers who call in and get stuck in limbo right now are being treated to a minor device scoop: an ad for the mythical Droid 2 Global, which has leaked out here and there but hasn't yet been officially announced. The ad doesn't reveal much apart from the existence of the CDMA / GSM slider and the fact that it'll work in 221 countries, but that's all we needed to hear -- listen for yourself after the break.

I remember the first time I made a call on my iPhone all the way back in 2007; I was truly smitten with Apple's revolution. However, during the second call, I realized that the sharp edge really was uncomfortable to my delicate, mirror-encrusted earlobes.

Seagate, WD nearing launch of 3TB internal hard drives
Seagate and WD will soon release the first 3TB internal hard drives on the market, says Dutch site Hardware.info. Images of the drives have surfaced, with European online retailers listing them for pre-orders as well. The 3.5-inch drives are called the Seagate Barracuda XT and Western Digital Caviar Green.

Verizon's tiered data plans hitting October 28, smartphones still getting unlimited option?
We'd told you back in July that Verizon would migrate away from unlimited data and toward a tiered model very quickly; turns out it wasn't quite as quickly as we'd thought, but as Ivan Seidenberg said last month, it's still going down. Apple Stores: St. Louis pictures, Chicago opening
TUAW reader Justin W. went to the grand (re-)opening of the (larger) Apple Store in the St. Louis Galleria mall this past weekend, and he's shared some pictures of the event over on Flickr for us. BlackBerry PlayBook should have 64GB model, big battery
At the GITEX show, RIM's Co-Chief Executive Officer Jim Balsillie revealed a few more key specs of the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. According to CrackBerry, the device will have a 5,300mAh, non-removable battery, which should provide it with more life than competing products. In comparison, the similarly-sized Galaxy Tab packs a 4,000mAh battery and a claimed seven-plus hour battery life when watching movies.

Amazon shipping info hints at Oct. 20th iLife update
iLife '09 listings at the US and German Amazon websites may back the notion that iLife '11 will be announced on Wednesday. At the US page, hovering a cursor over the Amazon entry under "More Buying Choices" reveals a two- to four-week shipping delay. Android Gingerbread given blurry photo, may pack video chat
Google's next release of Android, better known by its Gingerbread codename, may make video chat an important staple of its design based on a leak on Monday. What may become Android 3.0 has received only a single blurry photo from a Nexus One but word that it should use the same video format as behind Gmail's feature. The technique described by Phandroid could theoretically let Android users talk to Gmail desktop owners and not just other mobile devices.

Dell tops green ranking, Apple conspicuously absent
Newsweek has released its own green rankings of companies for the second straight year, with little changes from year to year. Most significantly Dell has moved up from its number two spot, knocking HP out of the top spot, with a perfect score of 100. Leaked MacBook Air photo now said to be 11.6-inch model
The spied MacBook Air prototype may actually be the smaller model and isn't quite the final version, a source added this afternoon. Backing some early suspicions, the AppleInsider tip said it was the 11.6-inch version and that some parts, such as the batteries, had been changed in the run-up to production. UK MacBook shipping times extend to two days
Shipping times for the MacBook Pro have changed from 24 hours to two days in the UK, a MacNN reader observes. The wait is present for other MacBook models as well, including the Air and the basic plastic version. Two-day delays can also be spotted in the French and German online Apple Stores.

Nook update to bring huge speed boost, true device sync
Barnes & Noble today promised a major Nook update that would give the e-reader an update just before it goes into the holidays. The 1.5 patch should "dramatically increase" the page turn speed and other performance of the Android-based readers. Qantas plans to incorporate iPads on Jetstar flights
Jetstar flights run by Australia's Qantas Airways will soon feature iPads for in-flight entertainment, Dow Jones reports. "We're in the final stages of putting in place what would be a broader roll out across the network," says a Jetstar spokesman. EU erlaubt Förderung des Breitbandausbaus in ganz Hessen
Die EU hat einer Mitteilung aus dem hessischen Wirtschaftsministerium zufolge bisher geltende Beschränkungen für die Förderung des Breitbandausbaus in dem Bundesland aufgehoben. Aufgrund der EU-Bestimmungen war die Förderung bislang nur in den nördlichen Regionen Hessens sowie im Odenwald zulässig. Analysts weigh in on Apple ahead of Q4 results
Some analysts are issuing last-minute memos to investors in advance of Apple's Q4 results, which will be made public later today. Among the more significant ones comes from Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore, who argues that the iPad is "driving a rapid, unprecedented shift in the structure of the computing industry," particularly if tablets are counted as PCs and added to recent IDC figures. With the iPad, the US PC industry would've grown 24 percent year-over-year in the September quarter instead of 4 percent, Whitmore suggests.

SanDisk, Samsung seen supplying bare SSDs for MacBook Air
Apple's new MacBook Air may go lean by relying on relatively unused SSD technology, a tentative note by Lazard Capital investment analyst Danile Amir. As Apple prepares to deliver its 4th quarter financial results, 148apps is reporting that at least 278,000 iOS apps are currently available. HyperMac forced to stop selling MagSafe charging cables
A lawsuit from Apple has forced HyperMac to stop selling MagSafe-compatible charging cables as of November 2nd, 2010. HyperMac has produced a number of small, portable batteries that can provide power to a variety of Apple portable devices. When connected to a MacBook Pro with their MagSafe-like connector, the "MBP-PRO," the external batteries could be used to charge the computer's internal battery.
The lawsuit claims that HyperMac violated patents related to MagSafe cables as well as other cables that use a 30-pin connection. HyperMac assembled their units using actual Apple parts. Note that HyperMac will continue to sell the batteries, though we don't see how useful they'll be without the cables.

Schwedenmoral: Laptopdieb schickt Professor persönliche Daten per USB-Stick zurück
Im wohlhabenden Skandinavien ist die Welt noch in Ordnung. In Schweden wurde einem Professor der Umeå Universität der Rechner geklaut und dieser erhielt eine Woche nach dem Raub einen USB-Stick mit den darauf vorhandenen Daten per Post. Was man davon halten soll, ist natürlich zweischneidig, freut man sich nun über so viel Moral in einem Land, wo man eigentlich keine Rechner zu klauen bräuchte? Der Professor erzählte der Västerbottens-Kuriren-Zeitung, dass die "Geschichte ihn an Humanität glauben lasse". So wurden aus der Tasche, wo der Laptop war, auch kein Geld oder Kreditkarten geklaut. Das einzige, was noch mitgeklaut wurde, ist skurrilerweise seine Bibliothekskarte gewesen. Vielleicht doch ein verzweifelter Student?

X-RAY von KDDI ist transparent und ziemlich slick

Diesen Morgen haben die japanischen KDDI einen ganzen Schwung frischer Handys in die dortigen Kanäle geworfen. Eines, das wirklich designmäßig was verspricht, ist das so genannten X-RAY, das von Tokujin Yoshioka designt wurde. Es handelt sich um ein transparantes High-End-Klapphandy, das mit 1-Seg TV-Tuner, 8MP-Kamera und QSD8650 Snapdragon kommt, das CDMA-fähig ist. Dazu gibt es ein GSM Radio und den LED-Scrollbalken in der Front, den wir, oldschoolig wie er ist, besonders funky finden. Ein Video nach dem Break.

OTI report finds US and Canada have the most expensive cellphone plans, India and Hong Kong the cheapest
It's far from the first study to compare the cost of cellphone plans around the world, but this new report from the New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative (which counts Google CEO Eric Schmidt as a board member) does look to be a bit more thorough than most, which might help to dissuade some of the criticism levied at past studies from the likes of the CTIA. MacBook Air rumor: upgradeable RAM, 8-10 hours on battery
Another rumor today provided possibly strong details of the next MacBook Air ahead of its anticipated launch on Wednesday. The design is now thought to be relatively upgradeable, as users could finally choose more RAM as well as larger capacity SSD. Täglich schaffen es rund 1’000 neue Programme in den Store, was die hohe Popularität unterstreicht, welche die iOS-Plattform in Entwicklerkreisen geniesst. While we've already seen it get official in Japan, Europe is first from the gate with an official launch date for the new Wii Remote Plus: November 5th. Unfortunately, we've not been given a price. What we do know is that it will launch in the four colors shown above and integrate into a single Wiimote what used to required a separate Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus add-on. So darf das iPhone unserer Meinung nach auch gerne aussehen, nämlich mit solidem, gebürsteten Metallrücken. Für alle, die noch Sorgen haben, dass das Glassgate noch bei einem einsetzt. But I like the idea of FlightBoard anyway -- it's an app that will automatically create a departing flights board for any airport in the country, so you can see flight numbers, gate arrivals, and departure times for all the flights in the airport.

Apple gibt heute seine Geschäftszahlen für 2010 bekannt
Heute Abend um 22:30 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Zeit wird Apple seinen Geschäftsbericht für das vierte und letzte Fiskalquartal 2010 veröffentlichen. Die Prognosen für den Geschäftsgang zwischen Juli und September wurden in den vergangenen Tagen laufend nach oben korrigiert. Unterdessen gehen Analysten von rund 12 Millionen verkauften iPhones und 4.5 Millionen verkauften iPads aus. Die Einnahmen könnten sich auf bis zu 19.9 Milliarden Dollar belaufen. Betrachtet man das gesamte Geschäftsjahr (Oktober 2009 bis September 2010), so dürfte der Umsatz bei rund 63.7 und der Gewinn bei etwa 13.4 Milliarden US-Dollar liegen. Verglichen mit dem Vorjahr entspräche dies einer Verdoppelung des Gewinns und einer Umsatzsteigerung um rund 27 Milliarden Dollar. One of the major points of confusion related to Microsoft's new controller-less Xbox 360 Kinect gaming system is the perceived lack of seated gameplay, largely driven by those early demos that required a standing player. At the time, Kinect's sensor was keying off the base node located at the bottom of the spine to create its skeletal models. Vor einigen Wochen hatten wir bereits über die aufkommenden Spekulationen rund um eine neue MacBook-Air-Generation berichtet. Im Vorfeld des übermorgen statt findenden Back-to-the-Mac-Events scheinen sich die Hinweise auf ein neues MacBook Air zu verdichten. Glaubt man einem Bericht von AppleInsider, dann wird Apple diesen Mittwoch neue MacBook-Air-Modelle mit wahlweise 11.6 oder 13.3 Zoll Bildschirmdiagonale einführen. Das neue MacBook Air soll nochmals schlanker werden und wie bisher ein Unibody-Aluminium-Gehäuse besitzen, wobei Apple weiterhin auf den vom MacBook Pro bekannten schwarzen Displayrahmen verzichten werde. Anders als bisher werde das neue MacBook Air auf beiden Seiten je einen USB-Anschluss besitzen, auch ein SD-Kartenslot ist angeblich vorhanden. Bewegungen und Kämpfe werden über ein mechanisches Drehrad ausgeführt. Insgesamt eine sehr interessante Implementierung, die momentan nur daran krankt, den Spielstand nicht zu speichern. Gartner: Tablet-Markt wächst 2011 um 181 Prozent
Gartner hat seine jüngste Schätzung für den weltweiten Tablet-Markt vorgelegt. Demnach wird die Branche - angetrieben durch das iPad - in diesem Jahr 19,5 Millionen Media-Tablets verkaufen. The fact that Sprint and Clearware have teamed up to deliver WiMax to New York, LA, and San Francisco isn't news. In fact, we've already seen the networks light up in operational readiness modes on the way to full consumer availability. Microsoft expands anti-crackdown licenses to 12 countries
Microsoft today expanded on its plans to avoid anti-dissent piracy crackdowns by expanding its coverage to 12 more countries. In addition to Russia, the pledge is now extending to China, Malaysia, Vietnam and eight former Soviet states. The plicy will continue as before and automatically grant licenses to Microsoft software for advocacy groups and other non-profits so that piracy can't be used as a pretext to stamp out political opposition.
