Apple in its quarterly results revealed that it had blown past RIM in smartphone sales. The company's 14.1 million iPhone shipments in the summer were enough for it to trump RIM's 12.1 million BlackBerries over its own summer quarter, which finished a month earlier. The upset is one of the few seen since the iPhone went on sale, as Apple so far is only known to have passed RIM once early into the iPhone's history.
