Red Pill image editor adds content-aware fill
German software house Times For Fun, makers of Fastcut, have put out a fifth public beta version of their image editor Red Pill, a lightweight photo-manipulation program that sports a selection of Photoshop-esque features. The latest beta adds a "smart fill" or content-aware brush similar to one of the major features of Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Google Goggles reaches the App Store, only supported on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4
We can't exactly figure out why Google wants to give away all of Android's competitive advantages, but hey, we doubt the legions of iOS users are kvetching. Ten months after the first public build of Goggles hit the Android Market, the same app is now making waves on the iPhone. Pair of HTC Windows Phone 7 devices hit the FCC
Not much in the way of specifics here, but a pair of HTC Windows Phone 7 devices have just turned up on the FCC's website, which leads us to believe that some phones might actually be launching any day now. Google Goggles comes to iPhone
After some time in development, Google has finally launched an iPhone version of its Goggles search technology. The feature has been integrated into the existing Google Mobile app for the iPhone via a free update. Tapping on a camera button in the software triggers the Goggles mode, which generates search results based on objects it detects in an image.

HDCP may spoil your Apple TV fun
Given the minimal available output ports (just HDMI and TOSlink optical audio) on the Apple TV, it's no surprise that the low-cost HDMI to DVI cables used in some home media setups aren't supported. It's been just over a month and a half since Oracle first sued Google for infringing various Java-related patents in Android, and the big G's just filed its official response to the lawsuit after calling it "baseless." Beta Beat: Sparrow Gmail client for Mac
Sparrow is a free Gmail client for your Mac that was released yesterday and is still in beta. Unlike MailPlane, which largely simulates the Gmail experience plus some powerful additions, the Sparrow client is designed to be minimalist.
As John Gruber (Daring Fireball) points out, the design for this Gmail client seems to be inspired by Tweetie for Mac. The developers Dinh Viêt Hoà and Dominique Leca ignore the traditional email client stereotype and aim for simplicity in a way that is rather inspired. Sparrow has "just your mail, and nothing else."

Google's Eric Schmidt says Android is profitable, could eventually be a $10 billion business
It may not exactly be a huge surprise given the recent market share numbers, but Google CEO Eric Schmidt has recently confirmed that Android is, in fact, profitable for the company. Of course, it doesn't make all that money from Android directly, but Schmidt says that Android-based phones are already generating enough advertising revenue to cover the cost of development. RED founder Jannard admits 'consumer' cam was mistake
RED founder Jim Jannard has admitted that his company should not have attempted to engage the consumer market with its upcoming Scarlet camera. Apple's North Carolina data center nears completion
It seems we've been discussing Apple's upcoming, massive North Carolina datacenter for a long, long time -- since around May 2009, actually. Word is that the $1 billion facility is nearing completion, meaning we'll hopefully see the fruits of Apple's labor very soon.
Here's one interesting item to come out of the story: the company reportedly paid one family upwards of $1.7 million for their one-acre lot. Even having paid that amount for such a small bit of land, Apple could have come away from this having paid as little as $35k per acre.

In Brief: Apple TV part cost pegged at $64
Arik Hessendahl over at Business Week reports that the new 2nd generation Apple TV model might cost $64 in parts compared to its $99 retail price. If that number is anywhere near right then the margins on ATV are ridiculously low. In comparison, Apple's iPhone gross margin was estimated near 60%. T-Mobile no longer accepting G2 pre-orders due to 'overwhelming demand'
Already got your pre-order in for the T-Mobile G2? Then you should count yourself lucky, as the carrier has updated its website for the phone with the short and sweet notice that "due to overwhelming demand, we're no longer accepting pre-orders for the T-Mobile G2." It does note, however, that you'll still be able to buy the phone online starting tomorrow (though there's no guarantee when it'll ship) or, of course, at your local T-Mobile store. Mercedes-Benz extends iPad plans to all US dealerships
Auto maker Mercedes-Benz has announced that all of its 355 US dealerships should soon be equipped with 3G iPads. The company launched a pilot program in June, initially distributing iPads to just 40 outfits. The stated intent was to keep dealers and customers out by the cars, rather than forcing people to retreat back to an office to hash out details.

Netflix adds video out for iPhone 4 and 4th generation iPod touch
Netflix has updated its iPhone app to support video out, but there is a caveat. You need to have an iPhone 4 or a 4th generation iPod touch or it's no-go. Of course you'll need the component Apple AV Cable or the composite AV Cable. Both are a bit pricey at US $49.00 but they will do the job.
The updated app is universal, and there are unspecified bug fixes, so iPad and all iPhone owners that can run the app should update to this latest morsel.
I think the only thing missing from the Netflix app is management of the user queue. There are some third party solutions like

Capcom Arcade to bring retro thrills and clever pricing to your iPhone
Capcom have announced that in early November an App Store near you will be graced with Capcom Arcade, featuring at launch arcade classics Street Fighter II, 1942, Commando, and Ghouls 'n' Ghosts. IGN has a postitive writeup of a preview it played, saying that the touch-based controls worked fine but it was disappointed by the lack of online play or leaderboards. Capcom is promising these features in updates down the line, as well as an additional game every month.
Personally I find Ghouls 'n' Ghosts horrendously difficult with a proper joystick, let alone a touch interface. Still though, our own Mike Schramm was impressed by iPhone version of Street Fighter 4, and the game

iOS 4.2: Kein AirPrint für iPod touch 2G
AirPrint ist eines der interessantesten neuen Features von iOS 4.2, welches im November erscheint. Es ermöglicht das Drucken über WLAN direkt vom iPad, iPhone und iPod touch. Bisher war das iPhone 3G das einzige iOS-4-fähige Gerät, das die neue Funktion nicht unterstützt. Nun hat Apple die entsprechende Pressemitteliung im Nachhinein geändert und schliesst jetzt auch iPod-touch-Modelle der zweiten Generation aus. New Apple TV may cost less than $64 to build
The overhauled Apple TV costs less than $64 to make, even though it sells for $99, says iSuppli. The research firm notes that the most expensive part in the set-top is actually Apple's custom A4 processor, valued at $16.55. By radically reducing the cost of components in the new model, it should theoretically be more profitable than the older one. iSuppli comments that the use of the A4 may provide special savings, since the chip is already installed in the iPad, iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch.

Google asks Oracle to toss Android lawsuit as hypocritical
Google today formally responded to Oracle's anti-Android lawsuit by motioning to dismiss the case. The search firm accused Oracle of violating the "doctrine of unclean hands" by willingly changing its approach after buying Sun. Oracle as late as 2009 had been calling for Sun to open-source the Java code at the heart of the suit but, having acquired Sun, is now refusing to do the same and suing now that it has a vested interest in profiting from patent disputes.

Liefersituation des iPhone 4 verbessert sich
Wie aus den aktuellen Angaben des Apple Online Store hervorgeht, scheint sich die Liefersituation beim iPhone zumindest in den USA deutlich zu verbessern. Dort gibt Apple die Lieferzeit nur noch mit 5 bis 7 Werktagen an. Dadurch ist das iPhone 4 in den USA mittlerweile besser verfügbar, als das ältere iPhone 3GS. In Deutschland liegt die Lieferzeit laut Telekom weiterhin bei 4 bis 9 Wochen. In anderen europäischen Ländern sind es dagegen

Toshiba tablets to reach US in early 2011
Toshiba will bring tablet PCs to the US and Japanese markets early in 2011, said a company engineer at CEATEC in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Hideo Kasuya said Toshiba tablets will also arrive in other markets, but didnít specify. The company introduced its Folio 100 last month, though this tablet may not reach the US or Japan. It was said to arrive in Europe, the Middle East and Africa instead.

Mercedes-Benz's iPad program expands globally
Citing an "overwhelmingly positive" response to last summer's pilot program, Mercedes-Benz will expand its iPad program to all 355 dealerships across the globe.
In an interview with Macworld, Mercedes-Benz Financial VP Andreas Hinrichs expressed his enthusiasm for the program. "The feedback was so positive we said, we need to push this out to all the dealers and take the financing process to a new level."

Android is number one OS among US phone buyers over the last six months
BlackBerry OS? Dead! iOS? Dead! Symbian? Never stood a chance. Android's exponential growth has today been illustrated by Nielsen's statisticians who present us with the above chart of recent US smartphone purchases. iPhone 4 shipping times drop to 5-7 days
Shipping times for the iPhone 4 have fallen dramatically at Apple's online store. Orders should now go out in five to seven business days, rather than the earlier promised timeframe of three weeks. Nokia's MeeGo device lead exits amid wider chaos
Nokia suffered another setback in its smartphone plans today with word that the company's MeeGo devices VP Ari Jaaksi had quit the company last week. Finland's Talous Sanomat wasn't given a reason for the departure but was told that the exit wouldn't affect the company's plans to have a MeeGo device shipping by the end of the year. Touchscreen iMac? Not so fast
Earlier this week, DigiTimes reported that Sintek Photonics was producing touch panels to be used in a touch-based iMac, and that demo units had been shipped to Cupertino for testing. Today, Sintek is denying the claim.
Once again DigiTimes has the story. Barry Wu, VP and spokesperson of Sintek, has said that his company has not been sending capacitive touch panels to Apple for use in the iMac. Of course we can't verify the validity of Mr Wu's statement, but there's no reason not to believe him, either. Those hoping for a touchscreen iMac will continue to wait.

Apple paid a couple $1.7 million in order to secure just one more acre of land for its North Carolina data center, according to Bloomberg. Donnie and Kathy Fulbright originally paid $6,000 for the acre, which they occupied for more than 30 years. It took several offers from Apple before the Fulbrights could be persuaded to leave. MS expects iPad rivals by holidays, may show them October 11
Microsoft's tablet strategy accelerated on Tuesday with remarks from CEO Steve Ballmer that Windows-based rivals to the iPad would be in stores by the end of the year. A vice president and spokesman for Sintek Photronics, Barry Wu, is now denying claims that the company is involved in producing panels for a touchscreen iMac. On October 1st, industry sources went on record suggesting that samples of panels had been sent to Apple. Barnes & Noble has launched its Pubit! self-publishing service for the Nook e-reader. The service gives writers and content owners a web-based system for converting material in Microsoft Word, TXT, HTML or RTF to the Nook ePub format. When up-and-coming iPhone company Ngmoco bought old-school Mac game developer Freeverse, one of the big worries was whether the developer would continue to program games for the Mac. But worry not -- Freeverse has released a sequel to its old Hordes of Orcs 3D tower defense game, and it's available now for both Windows and OS X.
The sequel brings new enemies into the mix, plus new towers and a completely overhauled user interface. You've got spells to cast that affect all enemies, and there are six different game modes to play with that range from classic tower defense to capture the flag and maze defense. The first one was a fun desktop variant on tower defense, and the sequel looks like it adds quite a few new gameplay and graphic elements into the mix.

It's with some surprise that we pen, finger to key to screen, praise for a 3D display -- particularly one that is glasses-free (the staff is still a bit divided, for example, on Nintendo's 3DS screen). Hitachi stellt neue Notebook-Festplatten mit 750 GB Kapazität vor
Hitachi hat mit der Travelstar 5K750 und 7K750 zwei neue Notebook-Festplatten mit 750 GB Kapazität vorgestellt. Beide Festplatten kommen auf eine Bauhöhe von lediglich 9,5 Millimeter und sind damit auch für Apples MacBook und MacBook Pro geeignet. Panasonic bringt mobile Spielkonsole Jungle mit Battlestar Galactica Game als Flaggschifftitel
Panasonic hat still und heimlich an einer mobilen Spielkonsole getüftelt, die jetzt über eine eigene Website angeteast wurde. Demnach wissen wir schon mal, dass das Teil Jungle heißt, daß es für mobilen MMORPG-Spaß gedacht ist und der Flaggschifftitel namens "Online Underground" sich des Battlestar Galactica-Universums bedient. Des weiteren soll Jungle eine vollständige Tastatur, D-Pads mit Touch-Funktion, HDMI- und USB-Anschlüsse mitbringen. Neue Gerüchte rund um iLife ‘11
Seit Januar 2009 hat Apple seine iLife-Suite nicht mehr überarbeitet. Nachdem bereits über den Sommer diverse Spekulationen über ein mögliches Update aufgetaucht waren, scheinen sich die Gerüchte nun zu konkretisieren. Die Deutsche Amazon-Webseite hat diverse Fachbücher zu iLife ‘11 in den Katalog aufgenommen, wobei die Bücher ab Dezember erhältlich sein sollen. Erfahrungsgemäss sind die auf Amazon angegebenen Erscheinungstermine stets mit einer grossen Portion Vorsicht zu geniessen, in der Vergangenheit liessen bei Amazon aufgetauchte Buchtitel aber schon einige Male Rückschlüsse auf neue Apple-Software zu, beispielsweise bei Aperture 3. Schenkt man den Buchbeschreibungen Glauben, wird iLife ‘11 komplett in 64 Bit vorliegen. iWeb ‘11 soll komplett neu gestaltet worden sein während iPhoto ‘11 angeblich eine stärkere Integration in Social Networks bringt. iDVD dürfte kein Bestandteil von iLife ‘11 mehr sein, bereits in iLife ‘09 wurde iDVD nicht mehr überarbeitet. False Start: Google plant schwarze Liste

iOS-Apps lassen sich auf Apple TV installieren
Ein Hacker hat entdeckt, wie sich iOS-Apps grundsätzlich auf dem Apple TV installieren lassen. Dafür muss nur eine kleinere Modifikation an der App selbst durchgeführt werden. Demnach reicht es aus die UIDeviceFamily auf 3 zu setzen, damit die Installation möglich ist. Doch mit der Installation ist man noch nicht am Ziel. Sharp Galapagos e-reading tablets hands-on (video)
Sharp's 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch Galapagos are something to covet. Sharp's got the Android-powered e-reading tablets heavily on display here at CEATEC, meaning of course we jumped at the chance to try it ourselves. The interface is a bit sluggish, as is pinch-to-zoom on the browser. That said, pages (like our darling Engadget) displayed in full and were crisp, as were the supplied magazine examples (Newsweek, GQ -- all in Japanese, naturally). Flash 10 is supported, although we didn't get a chance to try it. The missing trackball on the 10.8-inch model wasn't much of a concern, as it was all but redundant on the 5.5-incher. Sharp IS03 Android phone hands-on
Both KDDI and Sharp had a billion IS03s on display at CEATEC in Japan today (okay, not literally a billion, but quite a few), so naturally, we swung by to see what all the commotion was about. Panasonic to take on gaming rivals with Jungle handheld
A leak this evening has revealed that Panasonic is about to return to gaming with a device that would try to compete with Nintendo, Sony and possibly Apple. The Jungle (link ready soon) would focus on Panasonic Cloud Entertainment (PCENT), a service that would revolve around online gaming and online video creation and playback. Sources for CrunchGear expect that it would launch with at least a Battlestar Galactica massively multiplayer game and a Machinima.com weekly video series.

'Managed access' trial screens prison phone calls without jamming the airwaves

Panasonic's Jungle portable gaming system emerges, gets shown off on video
Apparently Panasonic has been working itself into a frenzy over a new handheld video game console designed solely around the concept of taking MMORPGs with you everywhere you go -- like you weren't already wasting too much of your life. The makers of the ill-fated 3DO are returning to the gaming world with a portable system dubbed "The Jungle." The clamshell device will allegedly sport a super high-resolution display, features a full QWERTY keyboard along with what looks like a touch sensitive d-pad and button arrangement, and may run atop a custom Linux build. The Jungle will also apparently sport a mini HDMI port, a micro USB port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Alongside the system itself, Panasonic will launch a Battlestar Galactica

iLife '11 book listing at Amazon UK hints iDVD alive [U]

New minimalist mail software, Sparrow for Mac, in beta

Marvell shows OLPC some serious love with a $5.6 million grant for XO-3 tablet
Marvell and One Laptop Per Child's close partnership has been no secret, but according to Xconomy, Marvell's about to put a whole lot more green into the XO. The semiconductor company is forking over $5.6 million to fund the creation of the next gen XO-3 tablet, and according to OLPC founder and former Engadget Show guest Nicholas Negroponte, it's still slated for a 2012 release. Apple TV hacking update: Bluetooth, white lists, ports, cables
We continue to keep track of Apple TV's hacking potential; here's another quick update of the new hardware.
iFixit confirms that there's an on-board Bluetooth chip: "The Broadcom BCM4329XKUBG 802.11n Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM chip on the Panasonic board is exactly the same as the one we found on the iPad."
