Palm planning keyboard-less 'Mansion' with 800 x 480 screen?
This one is still very much a rumor, but PreCentral is reporting that it's heard from a "very reliable tipster" who says that Palm is prepping a new phone codenamed "Mansion," which may or may not be the same device that recently turned up in a certification database under the name P102. The real kicker, however, is that the phone is supposedly a touchscreen-only device, and that the screen is said to boast a fairly high 800 x 480 resolution -- no word on screen size, unfortunately. Samsung Galaxy Tab UK official price hits equivalent of $950
Samsung's Galaxy Tab today received official UK pricing from retailers that puts it well above the iPad. Dixons, PC World and other stores should carry the low-end seven-inch tablet for £600 with tax, or $950. The cost comes despite the larger Apple tablet costing £529 ($838) for a model with the same 3G and 16GB of storage.

FLO TV killed by Qualcomm, its four users look shocked and saddened

Ticonderoga sets $430 price target for Apple stock
Launching coverage of the company for the first time, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White has assigned a $430 price target to Apple stock. The figure is said to be the highest currently proposed amongst sell-side analysts. "We believe Apple is still in the early stages of capitalizing on the trend toward smart phones and the digital lifestyle, while positioning itself to take advantage of large market opportunities in the enterprise, advertising, cloud computing and social networking," says White in a new research memo.

Virgin Mobile rolls out Android-based Samsung Intercept: $249 prepaid
Not much of a surprise here, but Virgin Mobile has just officially announced that it's now offering the Samsung Intercept, which it gladly notes is the first Android handset available on nationwide, no-contract plan. Running a reasonable $249 prepaid -- and exclusive to Target for the next few weeks -- the phone boasts a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, a sliding QWERTY keypad, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and all the basic Android amenities you'd expect (it's shipping with Android 2.1). Analyst: iPad's competition set to "fall flat"
Despite the large number of new tablets set to arrive on the market before the holidays, Apple is expected to continue to widen its lead over the competition, according to Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore. The company's tablet content, which includes the range of iPad-enabled titles in the App Store, is said to be at least 12 to 18 months beyond any alternative platform.

Panasonic has introduced an iPhone-friendly digital photo frame in the MW-20. Its satellite dock can also accommodate an iPod touch and playback its video, photo or audio content. 'Toasted skin syndrome' caused by extreme laptop heat say researchers
In a new study from the medical journal Pediatrics, researchers confirm what you've known all along: laptop heat is the greatest threat to mankind's continued survival on this planet. In the report, researchers collected and analyzed various tales of woe from youngsters who'd been treated for exposure to extreme laptop heat, and discovered that prolonged periods of use can lead to a condition horrifically dubbed "toasted skin syndrome." The effects of gaming (or, uh, studying) too hard can leave skin in a mottled, sponge-like state, can cause permanent skin darkening, and generally makes you less attractive to the opposite sex -- from a lap perspective. Glif would be an iPhone 4 stand, tripod mount
While I wait for Movie Peg to make a little doohickey for my iPhone 4, Dan Provost and Thomas Gerhardt have been working on a doohickey of their own, called the Glif. It will allow you to prop your iPhone 4 in a variety of positions for reading, typing with a Bluetooth keyboard, watching video and so on.
The neat part is that it's also a tripod mount. Since the iPhone 4 shoots HD video, can attach it to your tripod to shoot then prop it up on a desk to review your footage. Neat, eh?

Apple asks for stay on Mirror Worlds judgment
Apple is fighting the outcome of Mirror Worlds' recent legal victory, Bloomberg now says. The company has asked US District Judge Leonard Davis for an emergency stay on the verdict, which could potentially result in a damage payment as high as $625.5 million. Skype lands Cisco's Tony Bates as new CEO
It may sound fairly bland on paper, but the potential implications here are notable. Tony Bates, who was seen as a major player within Cisco reporting directly to CEO John Chambers, has just left to take over the CEO role at Skype. Samsung demos 330Mbps WiMAX 2 in Japan

Apple asked to pay over $200M in loss of Mirror Worlds case
Apple is being ordered to pay at least $208.5 million in damages after losing a lawsuit to a company called Mirror Worlds, reports say. The latter party has accused Apple of violating multiple patents: three describing a "document stream operating system," and a fourth showing an information management system based on the document streams. Samsung announces Bada-powered Wave II, not quite a whole new Wave
We only just got our hands on the Wave S8500, but it looks like Samsung isn't wasting any time in further expanding its Bada options -- the company has just introduced the new and slightly improved Wave II. The biggest difference over the previous Wave, it seems, is a larger 3.7-inch WVGA SLCD screen, compared to a 3.3-inch AMOLED on its predecessor. Google TV site live with apps, AirPlay-like Fling feature
Google today marked the impending launch of Google TV by launching a teaser page for the platform and detailing some of its first features, including apps and AirPlay-like media sharing. The app will have optimized versions of TV-friendly services such as CNBC Real-Time, NBA Game Time and Netflix, but should also have big screen versions of many familiar Android apps, such as Amazon MP3 and Twitter. Storm Trooper Helm aus Milchkanister
Die wahrscheinlich coolste Transformation eines leeren Milchkanisters. Es dürfte ein bisschen Arbeit erfordern, das Ergebnis in Form eines Storm Trooper-Helms für Halloween ist dafür aber äußerst sehenswert. Adidas kills $10M iAd deal
Business Insider is reporting that Adidas has dropped its plans for a $10 million iAds account. The reason? Apple's demand for near total control.
Citing two unnamed inside sources, Business Insider claims that Apple rejected three consecutive proposals from Adidas. After the third rejection, the company pulled out. Intent on making the best mobile advertising experience possible, Apple oversees nearly every aspect of an advertiser's campaign, and even designs the ads.

Apple may be on the verge of becoming the largest company in the world in terms of market capitalization, an Associated Press report notes. Although Apple stock is down more than $4 as of mid-Monday, if the price resumes an upward trajectory, it may soon put the total value of Apple shares over that of Exxon Mobil, the current market cap leader. Correspondingly, Apple would assume the top position in the S&P 500 index.

NVIDIA unveils Fermi-based, budget Quadro 2000 and 600 cards
NVIDIA today brought its current-generation Fermi graphics to less expensive workstation cards through two models, the Quadro 2000 and Quadro 600. The two have been pared back to 192 cores and 96 cores respectively but promise more performance than the parts they replace. The Quadro 2000 is said to be about 50 percent faster in geometry rendering than the FX 1800 it replaces, while the Quadro 600 is about twice as capable as earlier starter workstation cards.

Rumor: iLife '11 to be 64-bit, iOS compatible
iLife, the software suite that is included on every Mac and is made up of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD, hasn't been updated to a new version since January, 2009. That, of course, is making many of us in the Apple world curious about when the next version of the suite will appear on the market. Er hält Sonys Klein-Handheld und das Beste daran dürfte sein, dass ein normaler PlayStation-Controller angedockt werden kann, um endlich volle Spielkontrolle garantieren zu können. Für Leute mit dicken Fäusten dürfte das sogar ein Kaufgrund sein, sich einen PSPgo zuzulegen, denn die eigenen Controllerelemente waren in der Tat ein bisschen fisselig. Es kommt mit dem hauseigenen Mobilbetriebssystem Bada 1.2, einem 1-GHz-Prozessor und einem 3,7-Zoll-Super-Clear-LCD mit 800 mal 480 Pixeln Auflösung. Ouch! Apple dinged for $208.5 million in patent infringement case
You know that nice Cover Flow interface (above) that Apple uses on iDevices, in iTunes, and in Mac OS X? An East Texas Federal Court has ruled that Apple infringed on patents held by Mirror Worlds, a software business started by Yale University computer science professor and Unabomber victim David Gelernter. As a result, the court has ordered Apple to pay Mirror Worlds US$208.5 million in damages. Werte Elektrogerätehersteller dieser Erde, schaut euch dieses Designkonzept an. Line Block lässt den Kabelsalat endlich Vergangenheit sein, denn dank puzzleartiger Form lassen sich die Stromkabel zusammenschieben, was aber auch erwartet, dass so ziemlich alle Geräte mit den selben Kabeln ausgestattet werden. Die Designer Lee Ji Eun, Yi-Seo Hyeon, Heo-Hyeoksu und Jeong Minhui wollen also ziemlich viel mit ihrer Idee, auch mit drei Geräten in zwei Stecksdosen gehen. Most iPhone apps harvesting unique IDs, group claims
Most iPhone apps represent a potential privacy threat, a group of IT specialists claims. pskl.us notes that out of a collection 57 apps, taken from the App Store's Top Free and Most Popular categories, 68 percent were found to be sending UDIDs -- Unique Device Identifiers -- to servers under the developer's control each time they launch. 18 percent of the apps encrypted their data, making it unclear what they were sending. Only 14 percent of apps appeared to be completely innocuous.

Verizon rolls Fivespot 3G router with both EVDO and HSPA
Verizon today officially unveiled the Fivespot, the first portable router to support both Verizon's native 3G as well as world roaming. The ZTE-made router can share its access with up to five devices on Wi-Fi either on EVDO at home or up to 7.2Mbps HSPA around the world, including on the 850MHz and 1,900MHz bands used by AT&T and most Canadian carriers. Verizon preloads a SIM card for its official plans but hasn't said if the HSPA portion is unlocked.

Is Walmart the next iPad retailer?
Now that the iPad is officially available at Target (a discount department store here in the US), attention has turned to a suggestion that Walmart will carry the device before the year's end.
Back in May, Walmart's senior VP of entertainment for US stores, Gary Severson, told Blooomberg that he expected iPads to be on Walmart shelves "later this year." With about 2 months worth of holiday shopping time left (not to mention calendar days for 2010), the clock is ticking on Severson's suggestion.

Noch nie wurde eine Community so lang an der Nase herum geführt wie bei dem heiß ersehnten Duke Nukem-Sequel. Nachdem im April mal wieder neue Demos zu sehen waren, listen Amazon und das amerikanische Gamestop nun den 1. Februar 2011 als Releasedate, um Vorbestellungen entgegen zu nehmen. Meizu getting legal heat from Apple over M9 design?
Meizu chief Jack Wong today complained that his company was under pressure from Apple in legal talks over its rights to make the M9. The Chinese company's founder was "disgusted" with the process and was convinced Apple was trying to claim ownership of large, touchscreen-only phones. iPhone in Deutschland: Demnächst bei O2 und Vodafone
In Deutschland soll das iPhone schon in wenigen Wochen über O2 und Vodafone erhältlich sein. Gemäss WELT ONLINE hat Apple den seit 2007 gültigen Exklusivvertrag mit der Deutschen Telekom gekündigt. In den vergangenen drei Jahren wurden in Deutschland zwar rund zwei Millionen iPhones mit Telekom-Vertrag abgesetzt, viele Kaufinteressierte hatten das Exklusivvertriebsrecht der Telekom allerdings kritisiert. Deutschland ist nur eines von vielen Ländern, in denen Apple seine Vertriebsstrategie derzeit anpasst und künftig auf eine grössere Anzahl an Mobilfunkprovidern setzen möchte. Noch diese Woche sollen die Vertragsverhandlungen zwischen Apple und O2 sowie Vodafone unter Dach und Fach gebracht werden. Zwar gab es noch keine öffentlichen Stellungsnahmen, einige Details sind aber dennoch bereits durchgesickert. LG delays tablet indefinitely, unhappy with Android 2.2
LG hurt its tablet ambitions today by delaying the Optimus Pad for an indefinite amount of time. A spokesman said the company didn't think Android 2.2 was appropriate for a tablet and was instead planning to use some future version. The Korean company had originally planned to ship the tablet in early 2011 but now won't commit until it has the right version.

Left 4 Dead 2 coming to the Mac this Tuesday
This is it -- the rumors were true! The last non-Mac holdout of Valve's Source titles is Left 4 Dead, the zombie-killing shooter featuring four survivors and a whole lot of undead, but that's about to change. The official site for the newest Left 4 Dead 2 downloadable content, "The Sacrifice," confirms that the game's sequel is coming to the Mac this very Tuesday, October 5th. Left 4 Dead 2 will be released, as have all of the Source games, under the Steam Play banner. That means if you own it on the PC, you also own it on the Mac, so all you'll have to do is download and start shooting zombies.

LG today stated that it has dropped it plans for an Android 2.2 Optimus-branded tablet. Im Ergebnis werden Mitte Oktober lediglich 100 Geräte mit 32GB Speicher zur Auslieferung bereitstehen. Anfang November sollen 400 weitere folgen, teilweise auch mit 64GB. Apple passt MobileMe-Galerie-App an das iPad an
Nach der Remote-App hat Apple nun mit MobileMe Galerie 1.2 ein weiteres iPhone-Programm für das iPhone 4 und das iPad angepasst. Die kostenlose App ermöglicht das Betrachten von MobileMe-Galerien auf Apples Mobilgeräten. Einmal geladene Bilder lassen sich später auch offline betrachten. Wer keine MobileMe-Mitgliedschaft besitzt, kann neuerdings trotzdem die öffentlich freigegebenen Bilder von anderen Personen betrachten. Wichtigste Neuerung von Version 1.2 der MobileMe-Galerie-App ist jedoch die Unterstützung der Displayauflösung des iPads und des Retina-Displays des iPhone 4. Laut Tech ARP will nach Seagate auch Western Digital bald 3,5-Zoll-Festplatten mit 3.000 GB Kapazität vorstellen. Während die 3-TB-Festplatten von Seagate erst Ende des Jahres erhältlich sein soll, wird Westen Digital laut Gerüchten möglicherweise noch in diesem Monat mit der Auslieferung beginnen. Jailbreak der zweiten Apple-TV-Generation bereits geglückt
Wenige Tage nach dem Verkaufsstart der zweiten Apple-TV-Generation vermeldet das Dev-Team bereits den erfolgreichen Jailbreak des auf den neuen Apple-TV-Geräten installierten Betriebssystems iOS 4.1. Die benötigte Software, um den Jailbreak durchzuführen, wurde allerdings noch nicht veröffentlicht. Es ist auch noch unklar, welche Möglichkeiten mit dem Jailbreak einhergehen. Auf dem Apple TV ist lediglich eine Applikation installiert, welche die Benutzeroberfläche für die Set-Top-Box liefert. Ein Interface zur Verwaltung von Apps ist nicht vorgesehen. Für den Betrieb vorhandener iOS-Apps stellt sich ausserdem die Frage, wie die Apps auf dem Apple TV gesteuert werden könnten. Hardwaremässig scheint die neue Apple-TV-Box durchaus Potenzial zu besitzen. Neben 256 Megabyte Arbeitsspeicher sind auch acht Gigabyte Flash-Speicher ab Werk installiert.

Die Entwickler der Linux-Distribution Ubuntu haben den Release Candidate der neuen Version 10.10 (Codename "Maverick Meerkat", zu deutsch "eigenwilliges Erdmännchen") freigegeben. Microsoft verklagt Motorola wegen Android
Microsoft hat bei einem Bezirksgericht in Washington Patentrechtsklage gegen Motorola eingereicht. Außerdem legte der Softwarekonzern Beschwerde bei der International Trade Commission (ITC) ein. Er wirft Motorola vor, mit seinen Android-Handys neun Microsoft-Patente zu verletzen, die unter anderem Technologien zur Synchronisation von E-Mails, Kalendereinträgen und Kontakten sowie Benachrichtigungen zur Veränderung der Signalstärke und des Ladezustands beschreiben. Erudite tipster Abe found this little gem -- if you search for "HSPA" at T-Mobile's online store, up pops the image above, and as you can no doubt see with your sparkling eyes, that's the myTouch HD we're looking at. Verizon agrees to refund customers $90 million for wrongful data charges
Did you have a Verizon phone sans data plan, but get billed for data anyhow? Verizon Wireless is dropping $90 million to make things right next month.
