Samsung Transform, first hands-on!
Worried that the Samsung Transform would be a slatephone? Don't be -- it's more of a miniature Epic 4G. The Android 2.1 device's got a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, 800MHz processor and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, plus front- and rear-facing cameras for video chat -- though they're pretty low resolution and there's no 4G to pump their streaming video data. We just got hands-on with the phone, and came away mildly impressed -- though it's a little sluggish compared to the Epic, it's got much the same build quality, and the exact same hinge and buzzy vibrator if you want to get specific. FedEx brings free, AT&T-powered Wi-Fi to its Office stores
FedEx announced on Wednesday that it is now offering free Wi-Fi access at around 1,000 of its FedEx Office Print & Ship Center locations across the US. The connection is powered by AT&T, and will arrive at its other stores by the end of October. This should bring the total closer to 1,600 locations.

Sprint guns for mid-range Android: $149 Samsung Transform, $99 Sanyo Zio, and $49 LG Optimus S include 'Sprint ID'
The rumors were dead-on -- the Samsung Transform and Sanyo Zio are headed to Sprint this week, and by the end of the month the carrier will play host to an LG Optimus smartphone as well. Priced at $150, $100 and $50 (after $100 mail-in rebates) respectively, they're definitely not high-end phones, but if you're looking for a capable QWERTY messenger (with video chat!) the Samsung Transform just might fill the bill. LG Optimus T budget Android phone comes to T-Mobile
If this little puppy looks familiar, well, it should -- it's basically an Americanized version of the Optimus One announced earlier this year. In that regard, T-Mobile's Optimus T is a bit of an anti-myTouch -- a relatively low-end Android smartphone fit for the masses with a 3.2-inch HVGA display (touted as being fashioned of tempered glass), a 3 megapixel cam with video capture, Froyo, and Swype pre-installed. TUAW TV Live: A focus on the new Apple TV
It's been out for a week, probed like a hillbilly picked up by aliens, and talked about on every Apple blog. What is it? The new Apple TV, of course.

Sony slips out second generation TransferJet chip, partners begin to take notice
Bless its heart. Regardless of how loudly consumers yell, Sony can't seem to understand that creating proprietary formats that no other company has any interest in adopting isn't the brightest of ideas. Logitech Revue and accessories hands-on!
We just got some serious hands-on time with the Logitech Revue Google TV box, and it's all pretty slick, hardware-wise. The Keyboard and Mini Controller are just as well-done as you'd expect from Logitech, and the video calling features worked pretty seamlessly. We also managed to confirm that the Dish Network DVR integration is exclusive to Logitech -- it won't work on Sony Google TV devices, which is totally strange. We're headed back for video and we'll have some more in-depth impressions in a bit, but check out the pretty pictures in the galleries below for now.

Briefly: FlexiCorder released, Elle launches iPad app
Mirage Labs has released a new iPhone video recording app, FlexiCorder. The software allows recording with both of the iPhone 4's cameras during a single session, as well as other functions not found in the default Camera app. Users can for instance choose between different resolutions and bitrates, reducing filesize for videos of less importance. Found Footage: AXA Equitable presents an innovative iAd
AXA Insurance and Financial Services (a company that just hired my son this morning) has come up with a very creative iAd to introduce an app for their Belgium based auto insurance division. MacBook Air supplies dwindle, refresh likely next week?
The release of a rumored MacBook Air refresh may be approaching, as supplies for current models are said to be dwindling rapidly. According to AppleInsider, major Mac retail outlets such as Amazon, MacConnection, MacMall and J&R Electronics are sold out of the 1.83GHz version of the normally slow-selling notebook. Two of the retailers are also listing the higher-end 2.13GHz system as out of stock. The drought technically began weeks ago, with low inventories at a number of vendors. Logitech's Google TV box official: $300, camera, mobile apps
Logitech today confirmed launch details for the first Google TV device, the Revue. It will focus on the Android-based platform's hybrid TV/web searching and TV apps but should have strong support for Logitech's ecosystem. It can act as a Harmony gateway, including with new iOS and Android apps, but also supports the same Unifying receiver technology as its mice and keyboards, giving it support for existing peripherals as well as the pre-supplied keyboard and optional diNovo mini-based Mini Controller.

News: Mercedes-Benz expands iPad program, intros headrest mount

Tony Curtis buried with iPhone
As many of you have likely heard, actor Tony Curtis passed away in his home last week at the age of 85, due to cardiac arrest. Curtis was best known for his lead roles in movies such as Some Like it Hot and The Defiant Ones.
The late actor was put to rest Monday, the funeral being attended by family and friends. It's reported that Curtis was buried with some of his most cherished possessions, including a Stetson hat, an Armani scarf, driving gloves, a copy of his favorite novel and his iPhone.

Motorola suing Apple for patent infringement
It's getting hard to keep track of, isn't it? The way we hear it told, most of these patent disputes and overlaps in the mobile space used to be settled in quiet ways, mutually assured destruction-style, but lately there's a whole lot of nukes going off. Motorola is now suing Apple over a wide range of technology patents which it claims Apple is infringing on with its iPhone, iPad, "iTouch," and even some Macs. RIM pushes out software update for BlackBerry Torch, promises speed improvements aplenty

Google, Verizon to unveil 4G devices at CES
Verizon's wireless chief Lowell McAdam dropped more hints during his presentation at CTIA today with claims that there would be Android devices running 4G at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. He mentioned that there would be "some products" unveiled with Google CEO Eric Schmidt also on stage. Smartphones and tablets would likely be part of proceedings, McAdam said.

Rumor: Verizon iPhone to debut early next year
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple will start manufacturing a Verizon-ready iPhone by the end of this year, with sales to start early 2011. Based on the iPhone 4, the new phone would leverage CDMA technology instead of the GSM 3G mobile technology used by AT&T. Wireless telecommunications company Qualcomm will provide a key chip for the new device.
Sourced to "people briefed by Apple," the WSJ story is thin on details but is published on a reputable site that usually doesn't stick its neck out on unfounded items. If this report is grounded in truth, it indicates the end of AT&T's exclusivity deal with Apple and the possible opening of the device in the United States for even further carriers.

Verizon exec elusive on CDMA iPhone, says to ask Apple
Verizon Wireless chief Lowell McAdam today dodged around questions regarding the prospect of an iPhone but put the burden on Apple. At a CTIA press event, McAdam responded to new claims that a Verizon iPhone was being mass produced for early next year by saying that he hadn't seen the specific WSJ rumor but, unusually, said it was Apple's responsibility to announce anything. He warned that this sort of rumor "rolls out every few weeks" but said it was likely just a matter of time for an iPhone or even "a tablet."

Report pegs Verizon iPhone production before year's end
Production of a Verizon iPhone will start before the year is out, claim sources allegedly briefed by Apple. The design is expected to be similar to the current iPhone 4, only based on the CDMA cellular standard instead of the GSM technology used in all iPhones to date. Qualcomm is said to be providing "a key chip;" as for an actual release date, the sources point to the first quarter of 2011. Intel's 3rd-gen X25 SSDs get early preview
Early specs on Intel's third-generation SSDs were leaked thanks to AnandTech. Originally introduced in 2008, the X25-M G3 SSDs sport a 25nm IMFT Flash, which is expected to bring with it twice the capacity while retaining the same price levels. The drives are sampling now, but it's unclear whether they will be production ready in 2010.

Verizon to launch 4G in 38 cities, full coverage by 2013
Verizon at a keynote at CTIA today confirmed plans to launch its LTE-based 4G network for the end of the year. The initial rollout will cover 38 major urban areas, including New York City and much of the northeast; key cities in Georgia; Dallas, Houston and New Orleans in the south, and major cities in California that include much of the San Francisco Bay Area. About 60 airports will also be blanketed with the faster speeds.

Netflix makes Sony deal to delay DVDs in return for streams
Netflix today landed a deal with Sony to get further access to streaming video in return for a DVD delay. The exchange follows a similar pattern to earlier agreements and will see Netflix delay DVD and Blu-ray availability during the 28-day "window" in return for deeper access to Sony's catalog for the Watch Instantly feature. The plan also lowers the fees Netflix has to pay for its access.

Apple stores pulling SuperDrives, new MacBook Air imminent?
We received a heads-up from an Apple retail insider that Apple Stores are pulling all of the MacBook Air SuperDrives from shelves. These drives are exclusive to the MacBook Air and Mac mini Server, and the removal of the drives could be a sign that the long-awaited refresh of the MacBook Air is imminent. Recent rumors have it that an upcoming "MacBook" with an 11.6" display might be the replacement for the MacBook Air.

Apple Store news: Openings in Chicago and Edinburgh
As autumn approaches, an Apple Store in Chicago nears completion while another in Edinburgh is still in the planning stages. In Chicago, a future Lincoln Park store got dressed up a bit with festive barricades. Specifically, autumn-colored "leaves" have been added, spelling out the words "Lincoln Park Apple Store." Cisco unveils Umi consumer video conferencing system
Well hey -- Cisco's finally announced the consumer-level HD video conferencing system that's been rumored for a while now. Called Umi, (you me -- get it?) the system consists of a 1080p camera module, remote, and a separate set-top box. Cisco says Umi will allow for full 1080p video calls with 720p/30 recording, with a fallback to 720p / 480p if bandwidth is constrained. The camera itself has a glass lens with an optical zoom, autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance, as well as motorized pan, tilt, and zoom. BlackBerry loses market share to Android in summer
BlackBerry phones took a deep hit from Android this summer, comScore said today. RIM's phones lost 4.1 percent of the total smartphone share this past August to keep 37.1 percent of the US market. Android at the same time shot up a high 6.6 percent to reach 19.6 percent of the US sphere.

Orders from Apple control much of touch panel industry
Apple is currently the dominant customer amongst Asian touch panel suppliers, a Digitimes report indicates. "Almost every" touch panel maker capable of mass production is said to be receiving orders from Apple; Wintek and TPK Touch in particular are said to be benefiting from strong iPad sales. Those companies along with Sintek and Cando are all gaining extra capacity this quarter, suggesting that Apple orders may prevent them from suffering a usual seasonal slump.

Cloud Computing wird sich nach Ansicht des Bitkom innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einem Milliarden-Markt mit einer hohen standortpolitischen Bedeutung für die gesamte deutsche Wirtschaft entwickeln. HTC doubles profits through Android
HTC today said it had set a record for the company after nearly doubling its profit in the summer. The Taiwan-area smartphone designer earned the equivalent of $360 million in net profit, or 95 percent more than it did a year ago. The new Apple TV may be scarce to find amongst most US Apple Stores, says JMP Research analyst Alex Gauna. GDC Online 2010: Booyah's InCrowd, or how to develop an app in four weeks
Booyah first made a big splash on the App Store with the check-in game MyTown, then they stepped over to Facebook to release a game called Nightclub City before returning to Apple's platform a little while back with a title called InCrowd. Apple may be interested in hiring a professional blogger, or some other form of PR worker atypical for the company, a sighting in Cupertino suggests. TechCrunch's mobile industry editor, Greg Kumparak, was reportedly seen meeting recently with three Apple employees at a restaurant called BJ's, located in front of the Apple campus. Acer founder unconvinced tablets will replace notebooks
Acer pioneer Stan Shih today at a Taiwan government forum said that he doesn't expect tablets to replace any kind of notebook. The devices are designed to fulfill a "specific niche" where notebooks cover many roles, he explained. iPhone 4 shipping times improved
Good news for those wanting to purchase an iPhone 4in the US anyway. Shipping estimates have improved from three weeks to between five and seven business days, according to Apple's US online retail store. Improved shipping estimates usually indicate that Apple is catching up with consumer demand.
The iPhone 4 has been in high demand since its release in June, selling well over 1.5 million devices in its first three days of availability. Okay, that might not be a chameleon -- we're not the reptile experts we wish we were -- but NTT DoCoMo claims it is. Regardless, we were pretty impressed with this little setup NTT DoCoMo had going in the R&D (that is, not-for-production-just-yet) section of its CEATEC booth. The crown jewel of the setup is a small glasses-free 3D display -- obviously intended to mimic the size and style of display you'd see on a phone -- with stereoscopic cameras just above it to detect the presence and position of an attached stylus. Apple developing new iPhone form factors, close to release?
Analyst Shaw Wu has stated that supply chain checks indicate signs of new form factor iPhones under development, including both larger and smaller touchscreens than the iPhone 4ís current 3.5-inch screen size. According to Kaufman Bros sources, the new models could be both a new high-end addition and a new low-end model. Qi charger prototype from Sanyo and NTT DoCoMo seeks out, ruthlessly charges stuff
Wireless charging gear compatible with the Qi standard should be hitting shelves any minute now, but NTT DoCoMo's charging base at CEATEC has a completely unnecessary (and completely awesome) trick up its sleeve to set itself apart from the crowd. The prototype -- developed in concert with Sanyo and bearing the Eneloop brand -- gives you some visual indication that a compatible gadget has been detected by displaying a ring of blue LEDs that converges around the device to be charged once you set it down. When the Huawei Ascend launches on prepaid carrier Cricket Wireless later this month, it will cost $150. Hitachi unveils hi-res 302ppi 6.6-inch IPS tablet display
Hitachi has used the CEATEC expo to unveil its super high resolution next generation IPS display for tablets. The 6.6-inch 1600x1200 display packs in 302ppi, which compares very favorably with the iPhone 4 Retina display which packs in a slightly higher 326ppi. The new Hitachi display does, however, significantly exceed the 132ppi of the 9.7-inch 1024x768 IPS iPad display. It is also much sharper than the display 169ppi display in the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Anfang Dezember erfährt das immer noch ausgesprochen beliebte “World of Warcraft” eine Rundumerneuerung. Die neueste Erweiterung “Cataclysm” bringt neben der obligatorischen Erhöhung des Levelcaps von 80 auf 85 und neue Gebiete für diese hohen Level noch einiges mehr. A video leak [below] has surfaced of the Samsung Omnia 7/i8700 demonstrating the Windows 7 user interface in full flight. Based on the interface language displayed, it appears that the leak has emerged from France. Salesforce.com baut Rechenzentrum in Tokio

Citrix erweitert GoToMeeting um HD-Videokonferenzfunktion
Auf der Hausmesse Synergy in Berlin hat die Citrix-Tochter Citrix Online die Erweiterung ihrer Webkonferenzprodukte um Video vorgestellt. Ingenodata eröffnet neues Ladengeschäft in Olten
Der Mac-Händler Ingenodata AG eröffnet am Samstag, dem 16. Oktober ein neues Ladenlokal in Olten im Kanton Solothurn. Bisher besitzt die Ingenodata AG drei Niederlassungen, eine in Baden und zwei in Basel. Der neue Shop befindet sich in der historischen Innenstadt von Olten an der Hauptgasse 21/23, gleich neben der Aare. Noch sind die Arbeiten am neuen Ladengeschäft offenbar nicht abgeschlossen, stehen aber kurz vor der Vollendung. Für die Eröffnung ist ein Besuch von Ex-Miss-Schweiz Christa Rigozzi angekündigt. Googles Chrome auf dem Vormarsch, Chrome 7 als Beta-Version veröffentlicht
Googles WebKit-Browser Chrome erfreut sich zunehmender Beliebtheit. Gemäss den Statistiken von Pingdom konnte Google seinen Marktanteil zwischen September 2009 und September 2010 von 3.7 auf 11.5 Prozent mehr als verdreifachen. Verlierer war einmal mehr der Internet Explorer von Microsoft, dessen Marktanteil auf 49.9 Prozent fiel (Vorjahr: 58.4 %). Der Marktanteil von Firefox blieb unverändert bei rund 31 Prozent, während Safari von 3.3 auf 4.4 Prozent zulegte.
Nicht nur hinsichtlich des Marktanteils, sondern auch bei der Versionsnummer ist Chrome längst an Safari vorbeigezogen. Von der für November geplanten Version 7 hat Google nun eine öffentliche Beta veröffentlicht (Download-Link). Chrome 7 unterstützt WebGL, eine neue Grafikschnittstelle zur Darstellung von 3D-Inhalten, bietet Zugriff auf Google Instant und unterstützt erstmals die Systemdienste von Mac OS X.

Apples Serverfarm in North Carolina steht kurz vor der Fertigstellung
Seit Mai 2009 errichtet Apple im US-Bundesstaat North Carolina eine riesige Serverfarm. Angaben der lokalen Behörden zufolge investiert Apple rund eine Milliarde US-Dollar in die Anlage. Noch ist unklar, was Apple mit der Serverfarm genau beabsichtigt. Möglicherweise will sich Apple lediglich Kapazitäten für die Streaming-Angebote über iTunes sowie für seine zunehmenden Bemühungen im Social-Network-Bereich - Stichwort Ping - verschaffen. T-Mobile's Passes prepaid data plans leak out
We've been saying prepaid data plans are going to be the next big wave in mobile, and it looks like T-Mobile's getting on board -- we were just sent this employee training sheet detailing the upcoming Passes plans. All of T-Mobile's mobile broadband products are eligible, which is nice, but the plans themselves are a bit lame -- $10 gets you 100MB of data or a weeks' access, whichever comes first, $30 gets you 300MB or a a month's worth of access, while $50 nets you 1GB or 30 days. That's an odd blend of tiered data pricing and prepaid limits, and it compares poorly to T-Mobile's standard $39 / month data plan with a 5GB cap. But hey -- flexibility isn't cheap. The store's down!* We're not sure why (if I had to guess, I'd say they're updating the listings for bumper cases, since those recently returned to the retail shelves), but we'll keep an eye on things and let you know what's new when it comes back.

iPad adoption rate faster than DVD, says analyst
I first heard about DVDs in late March 1997, sitting in the back seat of a friend's car as her now-husband explained this new video format that had just gone on sale weeks earlier. Having just gotten my VCR, it was pretty hard to fathom picking up another piece of hardware anytime soon.
Within the next year, I saw DVDs appear at the local Suncoast and people gradually began taking to them. The clincher? Eventually, the price of DVDs dropped to where you were paying a cheaper price and getting better quality. Consumers gravitated to the new format and the rest is history -- the DVD took off and never looked back.

Motorola Citrus first hands-on!
The Droid Pro's certainly got the spotlight at Motorola's CTIA 2010 event, and for good reason -- this Motorola Citrus is slow and crippled by comparison. It's a iffy little entry-level device with a Blur-like UI and a fairly functional Android 2.1, but a lethargic MSM7225 processor and 3-inch touchscreen with a resolution so small you can see individual pixels without squinting. UI browsing and surfing was laggy too, though we did like the device's comfortable-to-hold size and dedicated physical Send / End keys. Let's hope this one arrives at a price low enough to woo the mainstream, because we're honestly having a hard time calling the Citrus a smartphone. Gallery: Motorola Citrus, first hands-on!

Lenovo considering ThinkPad tablet for enterprise market

Motorola Spice is the Brazilian Android portrait slider of your mid-range dreams
Hey, remember that weirdo Motorola XT300 portrait slider we saw with hints of Droid branding back in August? It was just released in Brazil as the Spice. Apart from the form factor, it's basically a Flipout with a different hinge -- it's got Android 2.1 with Motoblur, a 528MHz processor, a 3.2-inch QVGA screen, and a 3.2 megapixel camera -- but it was apparently designed and built entirely in Brazil, so that's something. Microsoft stock downgraded over fears of weak mobile
Microsoft stock has been downgraded by yet another analyst, Sasa Zorovic of Janney Capital, over fears surrounding the company's mobile endeavors. While Windows Phone 7 is still an uncertainty, Zorovic points out that it is "difficult" for the company to catch up in the mobile arena, which is becoming increasingly important.

Qualcomm ends sales of Flo TV; service for sale?
Qualcomm has halted sales to consumers of mobile 3G-based TV devices, called "Flo TV" by the company, with service to the devices being halted in spring of next year. Flo TV content provided to handset phones (such as Verizon's VCast) is "unaffected at this time," but the company is holding talks with various other parties for use of the technology, service or spectrum used by Flo TV.

Sony's Google TV controller outed on ABC's Nightline (video)
Well, this is a bit unexpected. We just happened to catch ABC Nightline's Google TV special, and lo and behold, there's a sneak preview of Sony's Google TV ad blitz and with it, a never-before-s een controller. T-Mobile expects BlackBerry share to fall through 2014
T-Mobile appears to have little faith in RIM to hold its position in the smartphone market, as the BlackBerry OS is expected to continue a steady decline into 2014. MarkdownMail lets you send email that has been formatted using John Gruber's Markdown syntax. The newest version has been updated to be a universal app for iPad or iPhone/iPod touch devices. Intel's 25nm solid state drives boast huge capacity, improved reliability, four times longer life?
