Rogers mulling multi-device data plans to cover iPad
Rogers is considering giving customers a data plan that would let them use an iPad and other devices without getting separate terms, Electronista has learned. Readers have said the Canadian carrier has been asking customers about an option that would put two or more devices on a single data plan and share the available bandwidth between all of them. The proposal wouldn't be exclusive to Apple's tablet but has mentioned it by name as an example.

Google denies plans to bring turn-by-turn GPS to iPhone
Contrary to earlier reports, Google has denied suggestions that it plans to bring free turn-by-turn GPS navigation to the iPhone. A company representative claims an executive was misquoted regarding plans to expand the free service, which is being considered for other platforms. The Maps Navigation feature is currently limited to devices running Android 2.0 or higher.

Boeing X-37B autonomous space shuttle launched last night, due back 'whenevs'
Boeing's X-37B, the test craft that's been kicking around for the last decade or so, has finally made it into orbit. Formerly a NASA project, we've heard little about the thing since it passed into DARPA hands in 2004 -- and statements like those of the Air Force's Gary Payton don't help much: "in all honesty, we don't know when it's coming back for sure." How's that for autonomous? Also uncommented upon, yet tantalizing, are the military's intentions for the unmanned vehicle, which can remain in orbit 270 days at a time. Spy drone? Orbital weapons platform? Plaything for our future robot overlords

Ah, leaked company presentation slides, they have a clarity only Mr. Blurrycam would despise. EETimes' got a batch of from Samsung dated November 2009 making the rounds, but more important than revealing its equal love for both Roman and Greek mythology, we get a glimpse at its then-planned ARM chip roadmap (yeah, another one) through 2013. Company knocks out Android-based iPad clone
A Chinese company has copied the iPad in its basic design. Called the APad, the device uses Android for its operating system and is powered by a dual-core Rockchip processor. It has between 2GB or 32GB of built-in flash memory, depending on model, and only 128MB of RAM. A TF card slot can add 16GB of storage space.

Police launch probe into lost iPhone sale
Filed under: iPhoneIt sure seemed like this whole "lost iPhone" saga might be over, but maybe things are just getting interesting: CNET is reporting that Silicon Valley police have launched a probe into the sale of the prototype iPhone left at a bar in San Jose to Gizmodo.com. Apple has reportedly spoken to police about the incident, and a computer crime task force is on the case, currently investigating whether there's enough evidence of wrongdoing to file charges. It's possible that there isn't, and this really is over, but if police find that laws were broken with the sale of the unreleased property, charges might be filed.

Police looking into next-gen iPhone over theft allegations
The process that recovered the next-generation iPhone prototype has triggered a police investigation, an official said on Friday. Apple has reportedly talked to the Santa Clara County district attorney for a preliminary look into whether or not recovering and selling the iPhone to Gizmodo amounted to theft. It's unclear whether the case would target the technology news site itself, the original finder of the Apple prototype, or both.

WSJ cautions against investor enthusiasm for Apple
Investors should wary about putting too much faith in Apple stock, a writer with the Wall Street Journal observes. Shares are currently sitting at their highest value in the company's history, roughly $270, fueled mainly by high second-quarter financial results. How do you make teachers angry? Take an app out of the App Store
Filed under: App StoreiPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users are used to hearing about new apps showing up in the App Store. It's when they are taken out of the App Store by Apple that things get interesting.
Teachers across the country got a taste of "interesting" last week when Apple removed Scratch Viewer from the App Store. The app is used to display programs that have been written by children in the Scratch programming language, a popular language for teaching kids the basics of computer programming. Scratch was developed by a team at M.I.T Media Lab, and the app was written by John McIntosh of Canadian development firm Smalltalk Consulting, Ltd.

News: Mix: Japan market, Wired, Lufthansa, iPad X-ray
The iPhone’s market share in Japan has more than doubled in the past year to 72 percent, according to Tokyo-based research firm MM Research Institute. Playing some Sudoku and reading Engadget on our Nook? Yeah, we are! Obviously, after hearing about the Nook 1.3 firmware update this morning, us bookworms nabbed the latest software to check out the added features. Apple offers Keynote for iPad advice

Spirit Of Berlin: Autofahren mit den Augen (ja, ohne Hände, aber mit Video)

Wir sind gar nicht begeistert. In Berlin hat David Latotzky von der FU Berlin heute seine "EyeDriver" Software vorgestellt. Mit der kann er das "Spirit Of Berlin" Auto ohne Hände steuern. Ok, wir sind doch ein wenig begeistert. Wie geht das? Augentracking natürlich. Und der Test war im Flughafen Tempelhof, das macht das ganze schon mal einiges sicherer. Bislang fährt es immerhin 50 Kmh. Theoretisch darf man sogar mal wegsehen, denn das Auto kann letztendlich auch alleine Fahren, schliesslich ist einer der Entwickler, Raul Rojas, ein Forscher für Künstliche Intelligenz. Steam for Mac beta reveals possible Linux compatibility in the pipeline, penguins rejoice
Gaming on Linux? That's not something we hear every day just yet, but it looks like the good folks at Valve might be considering a penguin revolution. In one of the latest beta releases of Steam for Mac, Phoronix spotted a mention of the open-source platform in the launcher script, and we were also able to verify this code ourselves. Furthermore, the eagle-eyed Linux blog has previously seen a handful of evidence hinting Linux compatibility for Valve's Source gaming engine. Quicken Essentials adds features, drops price

Intuit has added new features to Quicken Essentials for the Mac, dropped its price by twenty dollars, and is offering the difference as a refund to those who bought it at the original price of US$69.99.

An error this morning may have exposed a small customer base for the JooJoo tablet. Rather than use the BCC field to keep a customer feedback request secret, Fusion Garage used the regular To: field and made the list public. Only 64 buyers were on the list.

Android Eee Pad to debut in June, could ship as early as July
We have more details on that impending Eee Pad for y'inz. Interested? Of course you are! Speaking at a conference in Taiwan, Asustek Computer chairman Jerry Shen recently announced that the device will get its official introduction at Computex 2010, the first week of June. With any luck, the thing will hit retail channels the third quarter of this year -- possibly as early as July, a DigiTimes' source reports. Shen said that the device is meant to be all the things that the iPad is not: expect Google Android, USB, an integrated webcam, and Flash, for starters. The aforementioned source went on to state that, after wireless provider subsidies are taken into effect, the thing should cost around $15,000-16,000 TD (or about $480-510).

iPad production may be slowed by touchscreen production woes

HoloToy: An amazing 3D app for iPhone and iPad
Filed under: App ReviewWe've looked at a lot of 3D apps before, but I believe that HoloToy (US$0.99) is really something special. If you have an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you should download it right now. I don't think you'll find a better 3D app in the whole store.

Jobs consoles partner of cancer victim via e-mail
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has written an increasingly common personal response to an e-mail message from the public, this time one thanking him for wielding political influence in California. Following recovery from a liver transplant, Jobs used his clout to help push for a change to California law -- still pending -- which would ask everyone renewing a driver's license whether they want to be an organ donor. Jobs resorted to his wealth to secure an out-of-state operation, whereas many Californians have died waiting for donors.

Pentax brings exotic K-x colors to US

Lufthansa offers engineer who lost 4G iPhone free ticket to Germany
Filed under: iPhoneNicola Lange, Lufthansa's director of marketing and customer relations for the Americas, has posted a letter on his Twitter account to Gray Powell, the Apple engineer who lost the 4G iPhone prototype in a German beer hall in Redwood City, offering complimentary Business Class tickets to Munich.
"I recently read in the news that you lost a very special phone at a German beer bar in California," the letter begins. It goes on to say Lange thinks Powell could use a break and offers him the tickets to Munich where he could literally pick up where he last left off.

We love an innovative fix to a problem, and so were immediately smitten by the Game Gripper when we saw it in action. Intuit drops price for Quicken Essentials, promises updates
Hoping to spur more sales, Intuit is dropping the price of Quicken Essentials for Mac. When the financial software launched in February, it was initially priced at $70. The cost has now been lowered to $50, and Intuit says it is offering $20 refunds to anyone who bought the program before April 19th. The money must be claimed by the end of May.

Apple controls 72% of Japanese smartphone market

Psyko Audio hat vor rund eineinhalb Jahren, auf der CES 2009, einen 5.1-Kopfhörer angekündigt und nachdem niemand mehr mit dem Teil gerechnet hatte, ist es jetzt doch tatsächlich in den US-Läden gekommen. An ongoing shortage of Intel mobile chips might not break until May at the earliest, both analysts and chip resellers warned on Friday. Having begun in March, the low supply of Core i3, i5 and i7 chips now could continue to at least the end of April. German airline Lufthansa is offering a free flight to Germany for Gray Powell, the Apple engineer who accidentally left a prototype iPhone behind at a German-themed bar in California. Lochkamera Mini Lomo Pinhole ist winzig, macht winzige Fotos

Das ist dann mal eine feine Bastelei: Die Mini Lomo Pinhole getaufte Kamera von Francesco Capponi ist tatsächlich ein Sub-Däumling, allerdings ein funktionstüchtiger, die Lochkamera macht nämlich wirklich Fotos, natürlich ganz kleine. Fein an diesem Teil ist vor allem die Unentschiedenheit zwischen Funktion und Bastelfanatismus, auch wenn wir gar nicht wissen wollen, wieviele Versuche man braucht, um ein halbwegs brauchbares Minibild zu knipsen. Maps Navigation, Gmail archives enroute to iPhone
Google's Maps Navigation is still coming to the iPhone, the company has confirmed during a London press conference. Barnes & Noble Nook gets apps, web browser
Barnes & Noble kept up a string of new features today with a Nook 1.3 update. The new firmware adds support for apps to the platform and, in its early form, includes both chess and Sudoku games that take advantage of the E Ink display to show the main game while using the color touchscreen for control. Since the Nook is based on Android, utilities and other apps are expected in the future.

Alcatel-Lucent beschleunigt DSL auf 300 MBit/s
Bell-Labs, eine Forschungsabteilung von Alcatel-Lucent hat ein Verfahren entwickelt, mit dem sich über zwei gebündelte Kupferleitungen Download-Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 300 MBit/s erzielen lassen. Jobs resuming regular jet travel during 2010
Steve Jobs is once again flying on a normal basis, an Apple SEC filing shows. The company's Form 10-Q records that between January and the end of March, Jobs was paid $127,000 in compensation for jet expenses. The CEO uses a privately-owned Gulfstream V for negotiations, special events and other travel demands. The plane was virtually inactive during FY 2009, however, racking up only $4,000 on Jobs' allowances because of his treatment and recovery for liver problems.

Ericsson meldet sinkenden Umsatz und Gewinn
Ericsson hat wie im Vorquartal auch im ersten Quartal 2010 deutlich weniger verdient als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Ohne Berücksichtigung von Restrukturierungskosten belief sich der operative Gewinn auf rund 469 Millionen Euro, was einem Rückgang um vier Prozent entspricht. Der Nettogewinn brach um 30 Prozent auf 136 Millionen Euro oder 4 Cent je Aktie ein. Der Umsatz schrumpfte um neun Prozent auf 4,7 Milliarden Euro.

Nook gets web browser, free in-store reading, and games in new firmware
It's not in our nature to get all excited about firmware updates, but B&N sure seems to bringing the good stuff in release 1.3 of the Nook's software. The major new features include a Beta release of a "basic" web browser and a Read In Store feature that's reassuringly true to its name. You'll basically be allowed to browse and read the full versions of books while inside a Barnes and Noble outlet. That looks like a win-win to us, as it directly addresses the goal of using the Nook to get people in stores while affording consumers the opportunity to get a good idea about a book. Apple übernimmt 72 Prozent im japanischen Smartphonemarkt, 4,9 im Gesamthandymarkt

Apple hat in Japan laut einer neuen Studie des MM Research Institut einen Smartphonemarktanteil von 72,2 Prozent erlangt. Das listen wir einfach mal unter Marktdominanz. Der größte Konkurrent HTC kommt auf 11,1 Prozent, die weiteren Mitbewerber könnte man so gesehen unter ferner liefern laufen lassen. Dies gilt aber natürlich nur für den Smartphonesektor, für alle Handys gerechnet ist noch immer Sharp Marktführer mit 26,2 Prozent. Eine knappe Meldung vom Börsenparkett erreichte uns kurz nach Bekanntgabe von Apples Quartalszahlen: Wie MarketWatch berichtet, hat Apple mit einer Marktkapitalisierung von 241,5 Milliarden US-Dollar Microsoft überholt und ist nun das an diesem Wert gemessen zweitgrößte Unternehmen weltweit - nur Exxon Mobil ist mit einer Marktkapitalisierung von über 300 Milliarden US-Dollar noch teurer. Onda's Vi10 Android PMP sports Rockchip internals, 3G wireless
We haven't seen much of Rockchip's 600MHz, RK2808 processor for mobile devices outside of China and, while we're not entirely confident that this particular implementation will ever grace our retail shelves, it is nice to see that this semi-working prototype exists somewhere. HTC ruled out as Palm buyer, Lenovo seen likely
A source Friday morning has hinted that HTC has turned down the possibility of buying Palm. The insider claimed that Palm had approached HTC with an offer but was turned down after HTC reviewed Palm's finances and decided to pass. There "weren't enough synergies" in costs or elsewhere to take the deal ahead, the Reuters contact said.

Die Entwickler der Linux-Distribution Ubuntu haben den Release Candidate der neuen Version 10.04 (Codename "Lucid Lynx", zu deutsch "leuchtender Luchs") freigegeben. ASUS Eee Pad due July, being girded against iPad
ASUS on Friday confirmed the existence of the Eee Pad and set itself up for a battle against Apple in the tablet space. Chief executive Jerry Shen said the Eee Pad would reach shops in the summer (likely late July) after an unveiling in early June and that it was being tweaked to compete against the iPad. The tablet has had its industrial design upgraded and is being developed with some cooperation from Google on the Android platform it uses, Shen said.

Amazon übertrifft Erwartungen
Amazon hat seinen Gewinn im ersten Quartal 2010 um 68 Prozent auf 299 Millionen Dollar (225 Millionen Euro) oder 0,66 Dollar je Aktie gesteigert. Der Umsatz liegt mit 7,13 Milliarden Dollar (5,37 Milliarden Euro) 46 Prozent über Vorjahresniveau. Wie MarketWatch berichtet, hat Apple bei der Marktkapitalisierung mittlerweile Microsoft überholt, zumindest wenn es um den Aktienhandel geht. Die Entwickler der Linux-Distribution Ubuntu haben den Release Candidate der neuen Version 10.04 (Codename "Lucid Lynx", zu deutsch "leuchtender Luchs") freigegeben. Lufthansa lädt iPhone 4G Verlierer auf Bier ein - kein schlechter Scherz?!
Die Lufthansa scheint trotz Aschekrise nicht dem Marketong-Humor abtrünnig. Western Digital erzielt erneut deutliches Umsatz- und Gewinnplus
Western Digital (WD) hat wie schon im Vorquartal seinen Umsatz und Gewinn im dritten Fiskalquartal 2010 (bis 2. April) deutlich steigern können. Googles Bestätigung, nach wie vor an einer iPhone-Version der hier vorgestellten, GoogleMaps-basierte Navigationslösung zu arbeiten, erreicht uns nicht zum ersten Mal. Microsoft hat die Ergebnisse für das am 31. März abgeschlossene dritte Fiskalquartal bekannt gegeben. HTC will Palm nicht kaufen, Rubinstein will WebOS öffnen

Nachdem sich HTC die Zahlen genauer angesehen hat, wollen sie Palm nicht kaufen und da bleibt jetzt in Asien wohl nur noch Lenovo. Mangelnde Synergien sagt HTC. Und Palms CEO Jon Rubinstein möchte - laut Informationen der Financial Times - sowieso lieber alleine weiter machen. Obendrein kündigt er gleich noch neue Handys und die Öffnung von WebOS an. Apples Marktanteil in der Schweiz im 1. Quartal 2010 (IDC)
Nach den vorläufigen Zahlen des Marktforschungsunternehmen IDC sind im ersten Quartal 2010 (Januar, Februar und März) in der Schweiz geschlagene 19 Prozent mehr Desktopcomputer und Notebooks verkauft worden als im Vergleich zum ersten Quartal des Vorjahres 2009. Nach wie vor unangefochten auf dem ersten Platz bei den Herstellern liegt Hewlett-Packard mit 37 Prozent. Acer konnte auf dem zweiten Platz von 16 auf 19 Prozent zulegen. Weiterhin auf Platz drei folgt Apple mit 9 Prozent Marktanteil. Die Firma aus Cupertino teilt sich den dritten Platz aber mit Dell (ebenfalls 9 Prozent). Die Top-Fünf werden mit Lenovo (5 Prozent) komplettiert. Weiter folgen Toshiba, Asus, Sony, Medion und Fujitsu Simens.
Bei den Business-Notebooks liegt Apple auf Platz sechs — hinter HP (28%), Acer (19%), Lenovo (17%), Dell und Toshiba.

Na toll, da freut man sich auf die Keynote am 22. Juni im Yerba Center und dann sowas: Steve Jobs verkündete ungewöhnlicherweise über Youtube (it now supports HD by the way), dass es dieses Jahr aufgrund der jüngsten Vorfälle kein iPhone geben wird. Hardwarebeschleunigung von H.264 Videos für Entwickler freigegeben
In der technischen Mitteilung TN2267 beschreibt Apple Entwicklern wie sie für H.264 codierte Videos direkt auf die Hardwarebeschleunigung der Macs in diesem Bereich zugreifen können. Über das FrameWork VideoDecodeAcceleration ist es nun direkt möglich den low-level Zugriff auf die Decodierfähigkeiten der GPUs zuzugreifen.
Dies ist ein interessanter Schritt für alle Entwickler und sicher auch mit Blick auf den Apple-Adobe Streit freigegeben worden. Adobe begründet die schlechte Performance von Flash auf dem Mac mit dem bis dato gesperrten Zugriff auf diese Hardwarebeschleunigungsfähigkeiten.

Apple on Thursday released a RAW compatibility update for Aperture 3 and iPhoto '09. Version 3.2 extends support to a list of new cameras including the Canon EOS Rebel T2i, 550D and Kiss X4; Leica S2; Olympus E-450, E600, and E-620; Sony Alpha DSLR-A230, A330, A380, and A450. The update also addresses RAW processing issues with the Canon EOS 30D, Pentax K-x and K-7.

TwonkyBeam media distribution utility adds Mac support

Apple grabs 72% of Japanese smartphone market
Apple virtually dominates the Japanese smartphone market, MM Research Institute found in a new study. By the end of the fiscal year ended in March, the iPhone had 72.2 percent of the field with 2.34 million units on Japanese. Its next-closest rival, HTC, had just 11.1 percent, while local phones didn't register until third place Toshiba's 6.8 percent.

Palm expects to survive alone, return to profit
Palm chief Jon Rubinstein tonight proclaimed in an interview that Palm wouldn't need a takeover to continue its business. He was confident that the smartphone originator "can survive as an independent company" and added that Palm has a plan that would return it to profit. That Palm has $592 million in cash will give it time to recover, he said.

Palm CEO still thinks company can go it alone, open to webOS licensing deals
In the face of a near-constant stream of buyout rumors the past couple weeks, Palm boss Jon Rubinstein is holding the line he's held ever since he's taken the helm -- well most of the line, anyway. In a chat with Financial Times today, the CEO said that he still believes that "Palm can survive as an independent company" and that he's got a plan to get the company spitting black ink rather than red, but that "if someone comes to the board with a reasonable offer of course it's something [they'd] have to consider," which isn't anything materially different than he's said in the past -- it's just good business sense, and it's a very cautiously-worded soundbite.

Verizon posts first quarter numbers, gets bested by AT&T's
Verizon may have nearly six million more wireless customers in total than its closest rival, AT&T -- 92.8 million to 87.0 million, to be exact -- but that doesn't necessarily mean it's got the healthiest financials, as evidenced by the Q1 '10 numbers posted this week by the two companies. Apple updates iPad guided tour videos

Lenovo ThinkPad L Series doesn't look or feel like it's made of recycled materials
