AT&T Unlimited calling plans dropped $30, Unlimited data+voice now $100
AT&T dropped its unlimited calling plan $30 today to match Verizon's drop earlier this morning. The broader move by mobile operators who have been lowering their voice minutes is clearly a pre-emtive strike to VoIP providers including Google with its recent purchase of Gizmo5.
Soon, people will have the option of ordering data only plans and using their VoIP services (you can actually buy a data card and swap out your phone SIM to do this). Mobile Operator 3 in the UK for instance sells data-only phones and expects people to hook up their Skype accounts for voice. AT&T messes with plans in wake of Verizon's moves, slashes unlimited voice pricing
Sprint's talking about it, but AT&T's straight-up doing something about Verizon's plan adjustments this morning with a series of its own tweaks this afternoon. Starting Monday, January 18 (conveniently the same day that Verizon's changes go live), unlimited talk will run $69.99 on individual plans, a nice little cut of $30 against the $99.99 the carrier charges today; family unlimited, meanwhile, comes in at $119.99. AT&T hits Verizon with $100 unlimited smartphone plan, more
AT&T has already responded to Verizon's rate cuts with similar drops of its own. Beyond matching the prices of its unlimited voice and voice-plus-messaging plans, AT&T has now lowered the cost of a smartphone or iPhone plan with unlimited voice to $100. Previously, the company had charged a total $130 for the same level of service.

Jobs: "mobile ads suck"
Apple's deal to buy Quattro is part of Steve Jobs' own goal of 'fixing' the mobile ad space, an apparent scoop claimed late Thursday. An inside source said to be familiar with his views says he believes "mobile ads suck" and that Apple plans to overhaul iPhone and iPod touch ads in the same way they did music with iTunes. iVictrola: Das iPhone-Grammophon
Eine ausgesprochen nette Idee hatte der Designer Matt Richmonds mit dem akustischen Verstärker iVictrola. Die Schallwellen aus dem Lautsprecher des iPhone werden durch einen Kanal im gleichzeitig als iPhone-Ständer fungierenden Sockel aus Walnußholz zu einem metallenen "Grammophontrichter" umgeleitet und von diesem verstärkt.
Zu kaufen gibt's das gute Stück bislang allerdings noch nicht und der angepeilte Preis von 400 Dollar richtet sich zweifellos an Liebhaber. Die besitzen mit dem "iPhone-Grammophon" dann aber auch einen Eycatcher, der seinesgleichen sucht.

Apple takes Haiti donations through iTunes
Apple has begun taking donations through iTunes to help victims affected by the series of earthquakes that struck Haiti on January 12th. The monetary donations are submitted anonymously to the American Red Cross, assisting the humanitarian organization with obtaining relief supplies, mobilizing relief workers, and providing general financial resources.

FCC bans current 700MHz devices, clears path to 4G
The FCC in a new order (PDF) set out the road to 4G data by banning the sale of all current devices that use the 700MHz band. The measure has a "sunset period" until June 12th to ease the transition but will demand that everyone either stop using equipment on those airwaves or have it modified to use a non-offending space. Most of the affected devices will be wireless microphones.

News: Apple accepting Red Cross donations through iTunes
In response to this week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, Apple has begun accepting monetary donations for the American Red Cross directly through iTunes. According to the donation page, 100% of the donation will go to the Red Cross to support emergency relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake. ZAGGbox media center / streamer now available for pre-order
ZAGG has been dropping a few hints about its ZAGGbox media center for a little while now, but it's so far been keeping a relatively low profile -- it even managed to slip under our radar at CES. It was at the show, however, and its now finally announced that the ZAGGbox is available to pre-order for $799. Not exactly the cheapest set-top box around, to be sure, but that price will get you a few fairly unique features, not the least of which is simultaneous transcoding of captured video for easy viewing on both your TV and the mobile device of your choice (it also comes with its own iPhone app). Gordon - An open source Flash runtime written in pure JavaScript lets you use Flash on your iPhone
Even if Apple never lets a Flash plugin within 50 yards of an iPhone, you may yet be able to enjoy the richness of those blinking banner ads. Gordon (Get it? Like Flash Gordon?) is an open source Flash runtime written in pure JavaScript. For simple Flash animations, web developers must only slip in a bit of code into the website to allow non-Flash enabled devices like the iPhone. The Javascript pulls the relevant animations.
This only works with simple animations and is still quite resource heavy on the iPhone.

Official HTC capacitive stylus for HD2 now shipping
As hard as the world has worked to get away from styli and toward fingers, HTC -- in all its quiet brilliance -- decided that it'd still make a poker available for its mighty, capacitive HD2; after all, how else are you going to pinch and zoom with those adorable mittens on? Rogers makes fast-track phone upgrades permanent
Hoping to gain a small edge over rivals, Canadian cell provider Rogers today detailed key changes to its hardware upgrade program for phones. It now plans to give new-customer prices to everyone after two years and promises a "faster route" for some phones. Similar to its special iPhone 3GS upgrades, those who have been active for long enough and who spend a certain amount of money per month will have the option of getting a fully discounted upgrade sooner.

IE security flaw exploited in recent Google attacks
This next item's for any rogue states out there that might be planning a comprehensive wave of cyber-attacks: It looks like Microsoft has admitted that indeed it was a security flaw in Internet Explorer that hackers based in China exploited in the recent attacks on Google. As is often the case, the flaw is neatly summed up in the title of the advisory: "Vulnerability in Internet Explorer could allow remote code execution." NPD: Wii leads video game industry to 'biggest sales month ever'
Well, what a difference a couple of months and a holiday season can make. Just after finding that the video game console market shrunk by a fifth in October, NPD is now back with a new report that finds that December was the video game industry's "biggest sales month ever." Specifically, the group found that console sales jumped 4% compared to last December, with the Nintendo Wii unsurprisingly leading the way with 3.81 million units moved (up from 2.15 million the previous year). PDF2Office 5.0 adds workbook, new Office formats
Recosoft has updated its Mac-based PDF conversion tool for Microsoft Office, PDF2Office Professional. The software converts PDF documents into formats such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and HTML. It automatically recreates the original layout of a document, detecting styles, forming paragraphs and regrouping graphics. Credit Suisse ups forecast for December quarter
An analyst with Credit Suisse, Bill Shope, has raised his estimates for Apple's December-quarter financial performance. Shope argues that Apple's holiday sales were "better than expected," likely to have pushed iPhones to 9.01 million units instead of 8.75; similarly, Mac estimates have been raised from 3.02 million units to 3.28. Gross margin is expected to be 35.8 percent, higher than Apple's guidance of 34 percent.

Nokia shows Symbian^4 concept UI
Nokia today submitted a proposal to Symbian that would guide how the latter's late 2010 OS, Symbian^4, should look. The new OS layout is a refinement of an early tease and includes multiple home screens and widgets like Android, albeit as distinct pages rather than part of one continuous desktop.It would also have a much less cluttered interface with menu bars that can disappear and a primary menu that would involve just top-level items for apps, contacts, music and images.

Diesmal kein neues Supergadget oder Interface, sondern ein "Intelligentes Power Monitoring" System, das helfen soll effizient Strom und Energie im Haushalt zu sparen. Developers getting iPhone OS 4.0 already?
Rick Broida, writer of the Cheapskate blog over at CNET, has some slightly off topic news for us today. Seems he's been in contact with a "prominant application developer" who has gotten the iPhone 4.0 SDK and has actually updated their application to run with it.

Every day it seems that companies are finding better ways to keep an eye on the non-renewable resources we're sucking down to enable our voracious appetite for Xbox gaming and Hulu viewing. The iPhone 4.0 firmware may be closer to completion than would normally be expected, a report suggests. While Apple has typically only launched iPhone firmware in June or July, in parallel with new iPhones, a "prominent" app developer claims to have already updated a title with v4.0 support. We know one thing: 2010 is the year of the tablet. So much so that even mobile phones are creeping into the tablet territory. Take, for instance the just-revealled Archos phone. It has a 4.3-inch, 480x845 pixel resolution screen. That's pretty similar to the Nexus One and a bit smaller than the HTC HD2 phone.

Woz admits preferring Nexus One over iPhone

Apple Patent: Intelligentes Power Monitoring für daheim

Ableton debuts The Bridge, Akai APC20 controller
Among the Ableton announcements at this week's NAMM expo is The Bridge, a partnership with Serato. The software lets musicians shift material back and forth between Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live or Itch. When moving from Ableton to Serato, The Bridge enables Ableton Transport Control, letting an artist drag a Live Set into a deck in a Serato program, where it can be controlled with turntables and other hardware. Going in the opposite direction lets users turn a mix into a Live Set, which can be edited in more detail.

Worauf die Welt gewartet hat? Klar, auf den Replikator der bei Enterprise alle mit Essen versorgt die keine Lust haben in die Kantine zu laufen. Und wer arbeitet dran? Das MIT natürlich. Unter dem Namen Cornucopia gibt es jetzt zumindest schon mal einen Designprotoypen und wir zweifeln nicht daran, dass sie daraus die Küche des nächsten Jahrtausends zaubern. Oben die verschiedenen Zubehörtuben, unten wird dann gemixt, gekocht, gebraten und was der Gaumen sonst noch so begehrt. Wir können die Zukunft kaum abwarten und würden das gerne gegen den gesamten Molekularküchetrend tauschen.

Verizon's new plans official, undercut AT&T
Verizon this morning confirmed a late rumor by revising its cellphone plan structure. In addition to simpler Talk and Talk & Text pricing structures, the carrier is now offering a $70 unlimited voice plan as well as a $90 unlimited voice and MMS/SMS plan. The two don't include data by themselves but are as much as $40 less expensive than similar plans from AT&T.

Droid more costly to make than iPhone, Nexus One
An iSuppli teardown today reveals that the Motorola Droid is ultimately one of the most expensive smartphones to build in the current market. The Android handset has a materials cost of $179.11 and an assembly cost of $8.64, putting its pure manufacturing cost at $187.75. The number is higher than the $178.96 16GB iPhone 3GS and higher still than the Droid's fellow Android device, the $174.15 Nexus One.

Microsoft may show Win Mobile 7 after all
Microsoft may finally be ready to show Windows Mobile 7, a source said on Friday. The unnamed contact says the decision isn't final but that the company will tentatively use the Mobile World Congress show in February to provide an early look at the next-generation mobile OS. A release schedule isn't mentioned, but Microsoft has traditionally finalized the OS in spring with actual handsets arriving in the summer or fall.

Nokia: Symbian wird 2011 viel besser
Gelegentlich wirkt Symbian gegenüber anderen Handy-Betriebssystemen ja etwas veraltet. Aber Nokia verspricht zumindest für die Zukunft einiges. Symbian 3 (wir hatten das schon mal) ist ja für dieses Jahr angekündigt, und Symbian 4 steht auch schon in den Startlöchern. Zumindest als Konzept von dem die Screenshots hier sind. Warner Music kassiert dank Apple Millionen

Looks like all that GSM code-cracking is progressing faster than we thought. Soon after the discovery of the 64-bit A5/1 GSM encryption flaw last month, the geniuses at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science went ahead and cracked the KASUMI system -- a 128-bit A5/3 algorithm implemented across 3G networks -- in less than two hours. Steve Jobs is indeed a tech industry visionary with the capacity to create success, and the ability to turn an ailing company around, but not everything he does is laden with his Disney pixie magic, at least if fresh info detailing his originally championed name for the iMac is to be believed.
Last November Ken Segall was revealed as the man who came up with the iMac name while at TBWA\Chiat\Day.
He was shown the Mac which became the iMac well before launch of the product (duh, he had to write the ads).

Apple loses top corporate lawyer as M&A expansion team falls into place
Apple’s intention to develop a more-focused team to handle mergers and acquisitions (as revealed last night) has seen a casualty - the company’s top corporate lawyer, Charles Charnas, has quit the company.
Charnas was hired away from HP in April 2008 to lead Apple’s corporate department. The first hire by the company’s then new and now departed senior counsel, Daniel Cooperman, Charnas oversaw Apple’s recent acquisitions, including the recent Lala.com takeover.
Charnas was described as “known as one of the high-profile heavy-hitter corporate lawyers in Silicon Valley,” at the time Apple hired him, according to Anna Marie Armstrong, a legal recruiter for Mlegal.

SAP verzeichnet im vierten Quartal Umsatzrückgang um 9 Prozent
SAP hat seine vorläufige Bilanz für das vierte Geschäftsquartal 2009 veröffentlicht. Demnach verzeichnete der Softwarehersteller im Schlussquartal des vergangenen Geschäftsjahres einen Umsatzeinbruch um 9 Prozent auf 3,18 Milliarden Euro. 1983 review of Sony's first-ever CD player unearthed: hindsight's a beautiful thing
Here's a little bit of color for you. The gang at Retro Thing have brought our attention to a republished 1983 Stereophile review of the Sony CDP-101, the first-ever CD player. The results were that the audio quality was promising but not stellar, and the $1,000 (!) cost of entry for the device made it even less alluring. Knowing how history unfolded, we can't help but chuckle a bit at the worry that CDs would in the near-term become obsolete by another physical disc medium, but hey, we can't blame them for not being psychic. Intel präsentiert Geschäftszahlen für Q4/2009

Samsung Adds TRIM Function to its SSD Models
This is it. All major SSD manufacturers have released firmware update offering TRIM function to their SSD models. The last one was Samsung, and new firmwares are now available. Unfortunately, the upgrade procedure requires to entirely erase all data on the price, so backup first.So, now Apple does not have any remaining reason for not supporting the TRiM function on Mac OS X, and we expect that Apple will add it to its system in a future update, maybe with 10.6.3?The question remains open on the procedure: how would Apple, known for the ease of use of its update, system, interface and application, could offer a system update for the TRIM function that would require the user to erase all data on its SSD?

Engraving at 40 nm finally mastered?
To engrave the chips at increasingly small definition is an enormous challenge for the factories that fabricate the processors. In this world, there is Intel whose resources are, on this scale, practically infinite and who engrave themselves chips in 32 nm en masse whereas the others still have big problems to engrave at 40 nm. For a long time this has been the misfortune of TSMC, the largest specialized foundry of chips, who have not managed for a long time to achieve a yield of more than 40% of working products from each wafer.However things now seem to be better. The breaking news is that the yield has now gone back to 70%. This should put an end to the shortage of 40 nm graphics cards that has been known from AMD with the launching of its Radeon HD5xx0. Incidentally, the improvement of the manufacture of these chips should now allow many other chip designers who do not have their own factories to start chip production too. Intel defends itself by attacking AMD
Intel has submitted papers to defend itself from the charges of the FTC concerning abuse of its dominant position. The company has chosen a rather aggressive angle of attack towards AMD. To make it short, it is not Intel that prevented the development of AMD, it is just that they are incompetent. To support these remarks, Intel has recalled many facts:
AMD was unable to develop a mobile platform worthy of its name.
The chairman of AMD, at the peak of their form in 2004 said than the company was pathetic to have sold processors and not the platforms.

Apple is now much more committed to dedicated acquisitions thanks to a crucial hiring last year, a source claims tonight. The Justice Department has finally completed its investigation over text messaging fees charged by carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile, according to the Wall Street Journal. DigitalRise X9 tablet has Atom, multitouch, $780 price tag
This one doesn't seem to have quite made it to CES, but DigitalRise's new X9 tablet is now available to order, and it packs just enough familiar features to fit right in with the pack. That includes a 10.2-inch multitouch display, an Atom N270 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, built-in 3G, GPS and WiFi, and Windows 7 for an operating system. Of course, availability is apparently limited to import shops at the moment, and this one doesn't exactly come cheap, with it running a hefty $780 -- although that is a $220 discount off its $1,000 list price.

Vodafone UK is now selling iPhones like hotcakes
Vodaphone (49% owner of Verizon) is now selling iPhones in the UK as of today and they've announced that they've already activated 50,000 of them.
I have to say that, for whatever reason, I've never had better reception on my iPhone than I had with Vodafone in the UK. It stands to reason that a Verizon iPhone would do just as well.?

Verizon simplifying plans, cutting voice costs, requiring data packages this month?
Verizon's not known for simplicity when it comes to plan selection (actually, most carrier's aren't) -- currently, individuals can choose from Basic, Select, Connect, and Premium plans in a variety of voice bucket sizes, each featuring different text message and data allowances. It looks like that's about to change, though, on leaked slides showing that the current postpaid individual plan structure will be completely wiped out and replaced with just six options on the 18th of this month, down from 16 prior. Overall, the move is a trade-off -- unlimited voice pricing will come down a whopping 30 percent, while

OCZ Expects 1,300 MB/s for a PCI Express SSD
With SSD, there is not mechanical parts that could provide a physical limitation, and the maximum transfer speed is today mostly defined by the performance level of the controller, its size, the cache and number of such units. Below is the proof that one can push the system quite far with this prototype from OCZ:
This SSD will be able to read data at 1,300 MB/s , and to write them at 1,200 MB/s. It will be available in couple of months with storage capacity ranging from 512 MB to 2 TB for an unknown price. The good news is that we will be able to purchase an entry level model, and later on to increase the storage capacity by adding additional chips similarly to the one found on SO_DIMM models. The next limit to such transfer speed performance will be defined by the interface, SATA III or PCI-Express is they are not able to evolve faster.

Kodak to Sue Apple and RIM
Kodak announced it will sue Apple and RIM. Once again, the claim is related to a software patent (only valid in USA) and aims with the way to preview images. Kodak claims it has tried during years to find an agreement with both companies, but at the end only the legal action remained. There are already 30 other companies that purchased a license from Kodak, including all mobile phone manufacturers. So, the legal action is the normal ends for Kodak, as Apple and RIM refused to pay. Motorola rethinking spin off of mobile division?
Motorola is considering backtracking on its plans to spin off its mobile business, a leak from near the company suggests (subscription required). Another lawsuit targets Apple and AT&T for MMS
Apple and AT&T have been targeted in yet another lawsuit over the initial lack of MMS support on the iPhone. The latest suit, which aims to establish class-action status, has been filed in New York City. As with the other disputes, frustrated customers claim Apple and AT&T mislead customers into believing MMS functionality would be added sometime in June to the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Apple launches MobileMe Gallery iPhone app
Apple has launched a new app for viewing Mobile Me galleries on the iPhone, MobileMe Gallery (free, App Store). Users enter a MobileMe name and password to get a list of albums from their own gallery and can browse others' as well. The gallery page has a list of albums with a preview picture and a scrolling set of random images at the top. Albums can be navigated with flicks back and forth and pinch to zoom. The app supports landscape playback for horizontal images and also plays back video clips.
