Google files for Nexus One trademark
The mystery of the Nexus One continues to grow ever deeper, but we can pretty much confirm Google's planning to sell something under that name: the search giant filed an intent-to-use trademark application for "Nexus One" on December 10th, and in order to be granted the trademark registration it'll have to use the mark in commerce at some point in the future. Now, don't get too carried away -- sure, that could mean free unlocked GSM Android sets for all, but it could also just mean Google's planning to sell the Nexus One as its next-gen Android Developer Phone. Gulftown processor dubbed Core i7-980X, making its debut Q1 2010?
If you didn't make it to eBay in time to put down $1,200 or so for your very own pre-release Gulftown chip, cheer up! The countdown to the six core wonder continues apace, with more news each passing day. According to a purportedly leaked slide that popped up on China's PC Online, the 32nm chip will be known as the Core i7-980X and not the Core i9, as previously rumored. Part of the i7 "Extreme Edition" series (so extreme!). If everything goes as leaked, the 3.33GHz processor could be included in new Mac Pro systems come early 2010 -- which more or less jibes with rumors that the processor will be available sometime in March. Palm plans a second CES keynote
Palm this afternoon sent an invite to Electronista and other members of the press to attend a keynote on January 7th, the first official day of CES. The company has provided no clues as to what it's expected to release other than "new" developments. Last year was the company's first CES keynote in a long time and saw the introduction of webOS and the Pre, both of which were key to revitalizing the struggling phone maker's business.

LaCie intros most compact 2.5-inch hard drive
LaCie recently and quietly outed its latest portable hard drive, the 2.5-inch Rikiki. It is said to be one of the smallest drives of its types on the market, with its name being slang for "tiny" in French. It is encased in a brushed aluminum case and the only connection for both power and file transfer is a USB 2.0 port.

The Engadget Show returns Sunday, December 20th!
Can't wait for another Engadget Show to roll around? Well you're in luck, friend. We're going to be hitting the stage again come December 20th, and this one is set to be a killer.
The last show of the decade will be dedicated to just that: the decade. iVideoCamera brings recording to iPhone 2G and 3G, at 3 fps
Apple has finally approved a video recording app, iVideoCamera, for the iPhone 2G and 3G. The utility currently shoots video that is poor quality compared to the native recording on the iPhone 3GS. Users will be limited to one-minute segments at 3 frames per second, while the resolution is just 160x213. The developer, Laan, claims the next update will bring improvements to the frame rate, resolution, and clip length.

UxSight debuts iPhone holder with USB 2.0 hub
UxSight has introduced a non-slip iPod/iPhone holder with a four-port USB 2.0 hub. Devices are gripped using an anti-slip pad, while the USB hub is located in a base module. The hub is primarily powered through USB, but can also be run off an AC adapter, not included.

There's no denying that the two newest multicard readers from Addonics can connect to one's PC via eSATA as well as the conventional USB 2.0 method, but frankly, we've our doubts about the honest-to-goodness speed benefits of linking through the former. Comcast's TV Everywhere exits beta as xfinity TV
Comcast today brought its TV Everywhere project out into the open by launching xfinity TV as an extension of its Fancast service. The former trial and now beta product lets those who subscribe to both Comcast's Internet service and its TV services have free access to a large amount of the content normally available only on cable, including HBO.

Mamut to distribute AccountEdge in UK starting in April '10
Acclivity, producer of the small business accounting software AccountEdge, has announced a partnership with Mamut Software to offer an upgrade path for UK MYOB Mac customers. The two new products, AccountEdge and AccountEdge Plus for the Mac, will be available in April 2010. The programs will carry the Mamut name, launching in the UK as Mamut AccountEdge and Mamut AccountEdge Plus.

Blu-ray comes to the iMac... via an Apogee HDMI-to-Mini DisplayPort adapter
Although it's technically possible to use the gorgeous IPS display in the 27-inch iMac as a standalone monitor, the feature's been pretty limited in practice, since it only works with other DisplayPort devices like the unibody MacBooks. Feud with AT&T brings Verizon extra publicity
Verizon is benefiting more from recent struggles with AT&T than its opposition, a new YouGov marketing study claims. In a survey of over 5,000 US people aged 18 to 34, roughly 40 percent had heard something about Verizon at the beginning of November, while slightly more were familiar with AT&T. By December the figures for each were over 50 percent, and Verizon now has a 62.2 percent awareness, compared to AT&T's 54.5 percent.

Comcast On Demand Online renamed Fancast Xfinity TV, now streaming nationwide
After taking some time in limited beta, Comcast has renamed its TV Everywhere streaming venture Fancast Xfinity TV and made it available nationally to all customers with internet and cable TV subscriptions. Just as we'd heard, a simple browser plugin authorizes up to 3 computers per account, but now that it's live we've found more has changed than just its unfortunate new name. Intel readying six-core, 3.33GHz Core i7
Intel's first mainstream six-core processor should be fast across the board, a leak late Monday has given away. Built on the 32 nanometer Westmere process and part of the Gulftown architecture, the Core i7-980X will keep the Core i7 badge despite its two extra cores. At the same time, it will also maintain a high clock speed and should run at 3.33GHz, or the same speed as the current quad-core leader.

Ericsson trials HSPA-LTE interoperability, we count 7 Gs in total
Since it'll be eons until we enjoy the kind of 4G coverage that we've grown used to on 2G (and to a lesser extent, 3G), manufacturers and carriers are hard at work making sure that we've got a reliable way to interoperate for the foreseeable future -- TeliaSonera, for instance, wants to swap out its customers' modems for LTE / HSPA dual-mode versions once they're available next year. To that end, Ericsson and ST-Ericsson are trumpeting that they've become the first to establish "LTE and HSPA mobility" in accordance with 3GPP's Release 8 specification, which dictates this sort of stuff in a way everyone can agree on (that's a good thing). iTunes Connect shuts down for Christmas...
Apple appears to be overhauling the infrastructure behind the iTunes App Store, confirming that iTunes Connect, the portal used by those who choose to make Apps available through the Apple service, is set to be out of action across the Christmas period.
iTunes Connect provides access to tools and resources developers need for distribution of iPhone and iPod touch applications through the App Store, including application delivery, application management tools, sales information, banking setup, and financial reporting.
In a weekend note, Apple reveals: “iTunes Connect, the tool you use to manage your applications and access your reports, will be unavailable from December 23 through December 28, 2009.”

64GB Flash module from Toshiba arrives just in time for summer iPhone..perhaps earlier?
Toshiba announced today that its new production process had fit 64GB of RAM on a single embedded NAND flash memory module. Samples of the 64GB module are available from today, and mass production will start in the first quarter of 2010 according to the press release.
This is significant to iPhone and iPod Touch users because it effectively allows Apple to double the storage of their current generation devices. The iPod touch can go to 128GB while the iPhone can go to 64GB. As these chips will start to be avaiable in the next few months, perhaps Apple will jump its normal update cycle.

iPhone, iPod touch lead online product search this Christmas
Seems set to be an Apple Christmas in the UK, with the latest Hitwise data reporting the iPhone and iPod touch to be the current most searched for products in the UK this season.iPhone pulled in 1.75 percent of all UK online product searches during the week ending December 5. In addition, it accounted for 14.01 percent of all mobile phone searches, Brand Republic tells us.The second most searched for product? iPod touch, which gathered 1.29 percent of all searches in the period. The iPod nano took third place, with 0.5 per cent of all product searches. Amalgamated, the data means Apple products accounted for at least 3.04 percent of online product searches in the UK, hinting that as many as one in 34 consumers shopping online in the

Google Chrome beta beats Safari down to fourth place
Google’s Chrome browser has shoved its way into the third place slot in the Web browser charts on the release last week of betas for Mac and Linux, Net Applications tells us.
Chrome marketshare rocketed to 4.4 percent for the week between December 6-12, the analysts said. That’s up 0.4 percentage points since November, based on analysis of 160 million unique visitors to 40,000 sites monitored by the Web analytics company.
These figures mean Chrome has narrowly eclipsed Safari in terms of usage. The Apple browser holds 4.37 percent of the market to Chrome’s 4.4 percent.

Leaked Core i7 (Gulftown) details hint March/April Mac Pro Upgrade
Intel has teased out a little more information on its forthcoming 32nm six-core Xeon processors, the Intel Core i7-980X Processor Extreme Edition, the engine many expect will power a future model of the Mac Pro.

KavaTunes 4 adds custom artist pages, music website links
KavaSoft has launched KavaTunes 4, a new version of its web jukebox. KavaTunes produces websites with an iTunes look and feel, where visitors can search for, play and download music and videos. Playlists stream using a Mac's built-in web server. Pages display a mixture of artist photos and cover artwork, as well as galleries of most played, recently added and recently played tracks.

Android Market hits 20,000 apps, over 60 percent free
Quantity rarely equals quality, of course, but it's still fairly notable that the Android Market has now managed to top 20,000 apps just a little over a year after it opened its doors -- Apple's App Store had over 50,000 apps a year into its existence, for those keeping track. Even more interesting, however, is the distribution of free and paid apps in the Market. According to AndroLib, fully 62.2% of the apps available are completely free, compared to just 37.8% that are paid apps. News: Apple hit with patent lawsuit over iTunes, MobileMe, more
Apple, along with 17 other companies including Kodak and Microsoft, has been sued for patent infringement by BetaNet, LLC in U.S. District Court in Texas. Boeing's 787 Dreamliner takes flight for the first time
It's not every day a a major new aircraft takes the skies for the first time, but today's special: Boeing's 787 Dreamliner is currently taking its very first test flight, over the skies over Everett, Washington. Over 55 airlines including Continental and Northwest have already purchased some 840 of the next-gen planes, with All Nippon Airways scheduled to take the first delivery. The test flight is scheduled to land in a couple hours -- we're assuming work to mount Boeing's airborne laser system on the nose in order to defeat hackers will begin shortly thereafter.

HDMI to mDP adapter lets Xbox, Blu-ray reach Macs
Apogee today promised an upcoming adapter that would give owners of the 27-inch iMac and LED Cinema Display the option of using the display for HDMI-based sources. The Kanex-branded HDMI to Mini DisplayPort adapter should work with any typical HDMI device and has been shown working with Blu-ray players, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It should also pipe data from a Mac mini using its mini DVI output as the source.

CherryPal debuts $99 netbook, names it Africa
If you're looking at a netbook whose motto is "small, slow, sufficient," you pretty much know what to expect. CherryPal's latest, named Africa (in honor of the nation of Ghana or something), has everything you'd want in a $99 computer: a 7-inch display, 400MHz processor, 256GB memory, 2GB flash storage, and either Linux or Windows CE under the hood. Safari slips behind Chrome in browser usage
Usage of Google's Chrome web browser surpassed that of Apple's Safari for the first time last week, says tracking firm Net Applications. The company monitors roughly 160 million visitors to 40,000 sites, and notes that Chrome users represented 4.4 percent of the market between December 6th and the 12th. The figure was a growth of 0.4 percent over the month of November, and beat out Safari's 4.37 percent share.

Audio-Technica on Tuesday revealed its new ATH-ANC1 QuietPoint active noise-cancelling on-ear headphones. The headphones use the company's active noise-cancelling technology to block out 85 percent of ambient noise and produce clear sound. New patent lawsuit attacks Apple over remote registrations
A company called BetaNet has filed a new lawsuit against 18 corporations -- including Apple, Adobe, Intuit and Microsoft -- accusing them of violating two patents held in relation to remote software registration. The technology in question allows a user to enter registration information into local software, and then unlock the full version of a program by communicating with a remote server.

Android Market cracks 20,000 apps
Google's Android Market has passed the 20,000 app mark after just over a year, according to stats tracking the mobile store. Having just passed the 10,000-app mark in September, the portal has already doubled that number in the past three months as the number of new apps each month has grown steadily. A sharp spike in November saw 3,544 apps published on the Market, a jump of more than 34 percent over just the month before.

UCLA nanowire discovery could lead to faster, stronger, smaller electronics
Advancements in silicon-germanium have been going on for years now, but a team at UCLA is convinced that their discovery really is "the next big thing." Addonics outs internal and external eSATA card readers
Addonics recently introduced two products meant to speed up transfer speeds of content from memory cards, with its Pocket eSATA/USB DigiDrive and Internal SATA/USB DigiDrive. Either can read 15 different memory card formats with an optional adapter, with transfer speeds topping out at 1.5Gbps when connected using the eSATA interface. Leaked Core i7 (Gulftown) details hint March/April Mac Pro Upgrade

Verizon gives 3G data users free Wi-Fi
Verizon today pushed back against AT&T's command of free US Wi-Fi by offering its own Wi-Fi service. The service is considered an extension of the carrier's mobile broadband and gives free Wi-Fi to those who already use a data-only 3G devices such as a modem, a netbook or a MiFi hotspot. Verizon counts "thousands" of hotspots both in the US as well as in Canada and Mexico and considers it a more economical alternative to a roaming plan.

Google Chrome beta beats Safari down to fourth place browser
Google’s Chrome browser has shoved its way into the third place slot in the Web browser charts on the release last week of betas for Mac and Linux, Net Applications tells us.
Chrome marketshare rocketed to 4.4 percent for the week between December 6-12, the analysts said. That’s up 0.4 percentage points since November, based on analysis of 160 million unique visitors to 40,000 sites monitored by the Web analytics company.
These figures mean Chrome has narrowly eclipsed Safari in terms of usage. The Apple browser holds 4.37 percent of the market to Chrome’s 4.4 percent.

Seems set to be an Apple Christmas in the UK, with the latest Hitwise data reporting the iPhone and iPod touch to be the current most searched for products in the UK this season.iPhone pulled in 1.75 percent of all UK online product searches during the week ending December 5. Broadcom chip gives phones 1080p recording, 3D
Broadcom on Tuesday morning launched its most advanced mobile media chip to date, the BCM2763. Based on the company's next-gen VideoCore IV architecture, it's the first from the company to not only play back 1080p on a handheld media player or smartphone but also to record it. iTunes Connect shuts down for Christmas...
Apple appears to be overhauling the infrastructure behind the iTunes App Store, confirming that iTunes Connect, the portal used by those who choose to make Apps available through the Apple service, is set to be out of action across the Christmas period.
iTunes Connect provides access to tools and resources developers need for distribution of iPhone and iPod touch applications through the App Store, including application delivery, application management tools, sales information, banking setup, and financial reporting.
In a weekend note, Apple reveals: “iTunes Connect, the tool you use to manage your applications and access your reports, will be unavailable from December 23 through December 28, 2009.”

64GB Flash module from Toshiba arrives just in time for summer iPhone..perhaps earlier?
Toshiba announced today that its new production process had fit 64GB of RAM on a single embedded NAND flash memory module. Samples of the 64GB module are available from today, and mass production will start in the first quarter of 2010 according to the press release. This is significant to iPhone and iPod Touch users because it effectively allows Apple to Double the storage of their current generation devices. RED to show EPIC, Scarlet prototypes in February
RED early today made clear its efforts to persuade videographers by promising to hold a "RED Day" February 13th. At the Los Angeles gathering, the company plans to show prototypes of its long-delayed EPIC and Scarlet cameras along with some of their accessories. Studie: Stabiler Absatz von Mobiles
Laut der jüngsten Prognose des IT-Marktforschungs- und Beratungsunternehmen Gartner werden durch die Verkäufe in Westeuropa und durch den Aufschwung im grauen Markt im dritten Quartal dieses Jahres weltweit in 2009 1.214 Milliarden Mobilfunkgeräte (alle Segmente) an Endverbraucher verkauft. Dies entspricht einem nur geringen Rückgang von 0,67 Prozent gegenüber dem Jahr 2008. Im September schätzte Gartner noch, dass der Absatz in diesem Jahr um 3,7 Prozent sinken würde. Gartner geht für 2010 von einem Anstieg der Verkäufe um 9 Prozent aus. Der Smartphone-Absatz war laut Gartner im laufenden Jahr um 12,8 Prozent gewachsen.

Studie: Mobiles Internet immer günstiger
Mobile Internetnutzung ist 2009 deutlich günstiger geworden. Dies geht aus einer Auswertung des "BVDW Mobile Monitor" mit den günstigsten mobilen Internettarifen hervor, herausgegeben vom Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW) e.V. in Kooperation mit dem Online-Magazin teltarif.de. So sind Monatsflatrates für die mobile Internetnutzung im Jahresverlauf um bis zu 24 Prozent im Preis gesunken. Auch Tagesflatrates haben sich um bis zu 20 Prozent vergünstigt. Seit Anfang 2009 stehen deutlich mehr Anbieter und dementsprechend mobile Internettarife für Nutzer zur Auswahl. Laut aktuellem BVDW Mobile Monitor Q4/2009 liegt die günstigste Mobile Internetflatrate für einen Monat bei 14,99 Euro - zu Beginn des Jahres waren es noch 19,80 Euro. Wirklich ausnutzen können derartige Preissenkungen natürlich nur Kunden mit kurzen Mindestlaufzeiten und ohne Exklusivbindung an einen Carrier. Der BVDW geht für 2010 für weiter sinkende Kosten für mobilen Webzugang aus.

Gameloft ist dafür bekannt, nicht unbedingt originelle Spiele zu erzeugen. Andererseits zeigen sie immer wieder, was aus Apples kleinem Mobiltelefon bzw. iPod herauszuholen ist. TeliaSonera bringt das erste 4G Network der Welt in Skandinavien

TeliaSonera hat seit gestern das erste 4G Network der Welt am Start. In Stockholm und Oslo funktioniert es schon, telefonieren kann man allerdings noch nicht, denn die ersten 4G Phones werden für Anfang nächsten Jahres erwartet. Surfen geht aber schon, die dazu nötigen USB-Modems liefert Samsung mit dem Kalmia. Theoretisch lässt sich mit 4G eine zehnmal höhere Downloadgeschwindigkeit (etwa 100Mbps) erreichen. Der Launch kommt früher als geplant, weitere Großstädte in Schweden und Norwegen sollen bald folgen. TeliaSonera hat auch in Finnland Lizenzen für ein 4G Network, wann es dort losgeht ist aber noch unbekannt.

Analyst: iMac delays due to strong demand, not defects
Apple's recent shipping delays for the latest iMacs have allegedly been caused by an unexpectedly high level of demand, according to NPD analyst Stephen Baker. Intel announced its decision to unveil the roadmap of its forthcoming mobile CPUs on Thursday. So, the company is going to speak out products originally planned to be introduced on January 3. This is most likely the result of information that leaked over the past few weeks. If it remains unclear if Core i3, i5 and i7 will be launched on the same day of their announcement, or if their availability will be delayed by one to few months. Sony considered SSD, network storage for PS3 Slim
Could the the PS3 Slim have been even slimmer? It could have, according to Sony's Masayuki Chatani, but it would've cost you. That word comes from a wide-ranging interview Chatani gave to Tech-On!, in which he revealed (seemingly for the first time) that Sony had considered using SSD drives or even network storage to further reduce the size of the console. SSD drives were ultimately rejected, as you might have guessed, due to cost reasons, and Chatani says that network storage ultimately proved to still be simply too impractical for a game console.
