Continental to launch in-flight WiFi in 2010
Looks like Continental is the lastest to inch closer to our dream of WiFi on every flight: the airline just announced that it'll be rolling out Gogo in-flight internet service on 21 Boeing 737-300s in its fleet starting in Q2 2010. The service will cost $4.95 and up based on flight length, and the 737s in question mostly serve domestic routes -- we're hoping Continental takes a cue from American and US Airways and lets passengers check to see if their plane is WiFi-ena

iPhone overtakes Windows Mobile's US share in October
The number of active iPhone users in the US has passed that of Windows Mobile for the first time, new data from comScore shows. After just pulling even with Microsoft in July, Apple's smartphone platform jumped to an average of 8.97 million current users in October, well ahead of Microsoft's 7.13 million. The iPhone has regularly had higher market share now has also surpassed Windows Mobile devices in its actual user base.

AT&T 3G network goes live in Vermont
AT&T on Wednesday has made its 3G mobile broadband network available to the residents of Vermont. Major cities in the state, including Killington, Vernon, Warren and more will receive the faster service this week, with more cities coming online by December 31st. This includes but is not limited to Stowe, Jamaica and Winooski. Later, in 2010, Barre, Montpelier and Northfield, among others, will also get the faster service.

Sony hints at PSN-for-pay once again
We're not sure what Sony is getting at, but it certainly seems to be planning on charging somebody for something at some point in the future. Kaz Hirai mentioned a new premium level subscription plan for PlayStation Network last month, though we were told that the current level of PSN service was to remain free. Canadian iTunes Store adds HD movies
Visitors to the Canadian iTunes Store now have access to HD movies, Apple has announced. Titles can be bought for between $15 and $25 CAD, and rented for $5 or $6, depending on a movie's age and popularity. A limited selection is presently available, but does include movies like Inglourious Basterds, American Psycho, Star Trek, Coraline and Iron Man.

VLC for Mac development on verge of demise?
All work on the Mac version of VLC may soon have to come to a halt, says VideoLAN. VLC is an open-source media playback application, notable for supporting both audio and video, and formats missing from official playback tools made by Apple and Microsoft. Bend launches HSPA+ with 50GB cap
Oregon cable provider BendBroadband today stood poised to upturn the cellular data industry by launching its own high-speed 3G service with much higher limits than usual. The HSPA+ network runs at up to 15Mbps, and typically 6-8Mbps, but is most notable for its bandwidth cap. Where most such services limit users to just 5GB of data transfers per month, the company's top-tier $65 monthly service provides 50GB of data and in many cases could use 3G as a primary Internet connection.

Apple wins permanent injunction against Psystar, the well-known company offering computer hardware modified to run Mac OS X. This decision from the U.S. District Judge William Alsup marks the end of a 17 months old litigation.

PSP Digital Comics set to launch in US today
If you feel like geeking it up (or, as they say back east, "getting your geek on") there really is no better combination than gaming and comic books -- that's why we're stoked to hear that the PSP comic store is set to go live at 3:00 PM today. BlackBerry Essex sighted with Sprint branding
Well, we've been seeing the BlackBerry Essex out in the wild for quite a while now, but this is the first time we've seen it with some Sprint branding, which we're sure is enough to get at least some folks plenty excited (or regretful as the case may be). As most BlackBerry fans are no doubt well aware, the Essex is a Tour refresh that, among other things, adds some much needed WiFi capabilities to the phone, and ditches the Tour's trackball in favor of a trackpad. Zune HD gets native Twitter app

Despite some last-minute drama with the government, Canada's WIND Mobile has launched today, bringing to the table an interesting new low-cost competitor to the nation's giant incumbents, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. iFixit publish Mac, iPod, iPhone repair manuals under Creative Commons licenses
Ever hit a problem with an out-of-warranty Mac? Got the experience to “have a go” at repairing the beast? Good news then from iFixIt, who have released a suite of DIY repair manuals for all kinds of Apple products.
Even more interesting, the company has published these manuals under Creative Commons licenses, meaning they’ll remain freely available forever, and granting you the permission to reuse, adapt and improve on the publications as they exist.

Apple, RIM, Android to dominate 2010 handset market?
This may already be apparent to any iPhone user, but it seems the age of generic single-purpose mobile phones is done and we’re entering the era of the smartphone - at least according to Informa.
The UK research firm this morning began discussing its latest analysis for the handset market in 2010, predicting smartphones such as the iPhone and BlackBerry will account for up to 55 percent of the total market value for the handset market next year.
Principal analyst Malik Kamal-Saadi notes: "As demand for mid-tier handsets declines, competition in the smartphone segment is set to intensify.”
Sales of smartphones are expected to grow year-on-year by 33.5% in 2009--even as the overall handset market declined--and by 36% in 2010 in volume terms, Informa said.

MSI's MT-V660 goes to the Zune HD bank for design 'inspiration'
Well, at least MSI has good taste. We can't fault the company for nabbing a multitude of Zune HD stylistic elements in the creation of its new MT-V660 PMP -- outside of general moral qualms, of course -- because the results are predictably attractive. Such brazen style-lifts aren't a first for MSI, who took quite a few pages out of the MacBook Air book for its first X-Slim. Like we said, good taste. The MT-V660 itself has a 3.2-inch WQVGA screen and a codec-friendly Rockchip RK2806 chipset instead of the Zune's Tegra. No word on price or availability.

NVIDIA to show next-gen Tegra at CES

The iPhone/iPod touch platform has been adopted faster than any other new technology in history, Morgan Stanley analysts claim. In a space of nine quarters Apple has achieved an install base of 57 million, surpassing the achievements of companies like NTT DoCoMo, Netscape and AOL. WIND goes live in Canada with $35 unlimited data

FTC sues Intel over monopoly abuse of AMD, NVIDIA
The Federal Trade Commission today sued Intel for alleged anti-competitive practices. The complaint accuses Intel of conducting a "systematic campaign" of blocking access to competing processors that primarily centered on a system of rewards and threats to computer manufacturers. Intel has regularly either given incentives or threatened a lack of support to Dell, HP and other companies if too many (or any) of their systems ran processors from challengers like AMD, the US agency claims.

Adobe warns of new Reader, Acrobat vulnerability

Aufwärtskompatibel: Apples iPod-Socken immer noch erhältlich
Wer hätte das gedacht, als Apple die bunten Überzieher damals eingeführt hat: Überrascht haben wir beim Bummel durch den Apple Store festgestellt, dass man die vor gut fünf Jahren vorstellten Apple iPod-Socken immer noch kaufen kann.
Allerdings erfüllen die Dinger ihren Zweck inzwischen besser als je zuvor, denn laut der Beschreibung im Apple Store sind sie mittlerweile gar mit 17 verschiedenen iPod- bzw. iPhone-Modellen kompatibel. AAXA M1 Micro Projektor: Es muss nicht immer Pico sein

66 Lumen bei einer Auflösung von 800x600 soll ein Bild von knapp 254cm in dunklen Räumen, immerhin noch 1m in hellen Räumen bringen. Aber der Hauptgrund warum uns der AAXA M1 gefällt ist seine Größe und sein Preis. 112x105x46mm, 1GB Speicher, SD-Karten Anschluss, Mediaplayerfeature mit Fernbedienung, spielt MP3, AVI und JPG und ein paar mehr (3GP, VOB) und lässt sich mit Extrakabel auch an iPhone, iPods, PSP oder Zune anschliessen. Verbindung ist beim 299 Dollar Modell über Composite A/V beim 359 Dollar M1 Plus zusätzlich auch noch über VGA. Video über den USB-Anschluss zu spielen wäre prinzipiell möglich, aber bislang gibt es wohl noch keine Treiber.

Sonic bringing CinemaNow to DivX, Flash
Sonic has launched a pair of initiatives to expand CinemaNow past its current platform. Starting Thursday, the company will make available DivX versions (link not yet active) of movie downloads. Lockface: USB-Stick mit Gesichtserkennung

Japan! Immer wieder für ein Gadget gut, das einem selber nun wirklich nicht eingefallen wäre. Lockface ist ein USB-Stick (4GB, knapp 75 Euro, erhältlich nur in Japan) auf den man nur zugreifen kann, wenn man ein Gesichtserkennungsprogramm startet (im Preis drin). Ohne Webcam geht das also schon mal gar nicht? Doch, für Notfälle darf man auch ein Passwort eingeben. Das Design des Gesichts auf dem Ding weist sanft darauf hin, dass in knapp 2 Prozent aller Fälle ein anderes Gesicht das auch schon mal aufschliessen kann, und in zwei anderen Prozent selbst das beste eigene Grinsen nicht dazu führt, dass man auf seine Daten zugreifen kann.

Apple, RIM, Android to dominate 2010 handset market?
This may already be apparent to any iPhone user, but it seems the age of generic single-purpose mobile phones is done and we’re entering the era of the smartphone - at least according to Informa.
The UK research firm this morning began discussing its latest analysis for the handset market in 2010, predicting smartphones such as the iPhone and BlackBerry will account for up to 55 percent of the total market value for the handset market next year.
Principal analyst Malik Kamal-Saadi notes: "As demand for mid-tier handsets declines, competition in the smartphone segment is set to intensify.”
Sales of smartphones are expected to grow year-on-year by 33.5% in 2009--even as the overall handset market declined--and by 36% in 2010 in volume terms, Informa said.

Belkin today added a Bluetooth Music Receiver to its lineup for short-range wireless streaming. The adapter takes audio from any Bluetooth device that supports the A2DP stereo format, including many cellphones (such as the iPhone) as well as portable media players that recognize the standard, such as the second- and third-generation iPod touch. EU to implement Microsoft browser change in March
The European Commission on Wednesday greenlit Microsoft's updated proposal for a browser ballot within Windows 7. Now referred to as a "choice screen," the ballot will give EU what the Commission says is as neutral a choice as possible for their browser. Those first booting a Windows PC will get a neutral window to pick their browser and will see the browsers presented in a random order that gives equal weight to Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari.

Stadt Ratingen beschließt Abgabe für Google Street View
Der Stadtrat von Ratingen hat sich in einer Sitzung am Dienstagabend mehrheitlich dafür ausgesprochen, von Google für das fotografische Erfassen der Straßenzüge für Street View pro Straßenkilometer eine Gebühr von 20 Euro zu verlangen. Intel plant SSDs bis 600 GB im Jahre 2010

Nicht nur im Formfaktor nähert sich die Samsung ST5500 den Handys an, sondern auch durch ihr WiFi ist sie fast schon ein Smartphone. Ohne Telefon eben. 14,2 Megapixel, 7-fach optischer Zoom, Videoaufnahme in 30fps mit 1280x720 Auflösung, 100MB Speicher und microSD-Slot, 3,5 Zoll LCD Bildschirm, ISO bis 3200. Soweit die Spezifikationen die von Samsung allerdings ebenso wie ein Preis noch nicht bestätigt sind. Schade, denn genau so eine Kamera könnte man brauchen. Die Frage bleibt nur, was die Software kann und ob man damit wirklich seine sozialen Netzwerke, YouTube, Facebook, Flickr etc. direkt bedienen darf.

Gizmodo details Apple Gestapo: 'Worldwide Loyalty Team'
There is a pretty interesting post over at Gizmodo detailing the security measures that Apple goes through to keep its products a secret. We've heard 'things' but nothing as severe as this 'Tom' guy is reporting. Our source tells us about the piece: "This is the paranoid/Hollywood version. Unless there is a leak suspected, you won't ever see something like this. If you do, they have a specific reason to search." And, for example, "stay at your desks" is probably more like "just continue working and if there's something you need to worry about i'll let you guys know".

Microsoft releases Bing Search App for iPhone
Microsoft today unleashed their Bing App (App Store Link) for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app offers speech recognition of addresses and other features present in Google's iPhone application. It also offers the Bing daily image and related trivia.
Microsoft previously released the Seadragon App for high quality photo browsing. They have other apps planned as well.

Apple building new PastryKit Web Apps framework
Daring Fireball has a video rundown of Apple's 'pastrykit' Web app framework that was used to build the iPhone User Guide (demo below). That includes Mobile Safari's ability to run full HTML5 applications with offline database storage. Google uses this offline storage DB for Gmail, for example, so that you can write emails from Safari when AT&T is being AT&T.
But PastryKit is much more than just offline storage (Gruber is gaga over scrolling but there are other features, such as blocking out the nav and URL bars, as well). This looks like the beginings of a new way for developers to build quality iPhone apps but bypass the App Store. But will Apple release it to the public?
It seems like a lot of effort to build a framework this rich just for this iPhone User Guide, so I’m hopeful the answer is yes. Perhaps something integrated with the next major release of

Psystar is dead
Apple won the permanent injunction against Psystar that it was seeking today. According to Groklaw, it's total, including Snow Leopard. It also includes the Rebel EFI (which it is, as of this writing, still selling on its site) though Groklaw had this to say about the matter:
As for Rebel EFI, the judge while expressing that Psystar was not very clear about what it does, refused to exclude it from the injunction, and says Psystar continues to sell it "at its peril" at the risk of "finding itself in contempt if its new venture falls within the scope of the injunction."

Wirklich überraschend wie lange es nach den ersten Bildern gedauert hat bis mal ein Video vom Nexus One aufgetaucht ist. Jetzt aber. Leider zeigt es nur den Startup-Screen. Die vielen Gerüchte darum wo es nun wie verkauft wird scheinen nach wie vor nicht zu enden, aber das Snapdragon, 5 Megpixel, HTC Passion mit neustem Android Betriebssystem dürfte, wenn sich die Aufregung erst mal gelegt hat, auch nichts weiter sein, als ein neues HTC Android Telefon. Psystar is dead?
Apple won a permanent injunction against Psystar that it was seeking today. According to Groklaw, it's total, including Snow Leopard. It also includes the Rebel EFI (which it is, as of this writing, still selling on its site) though Groklaw had this to say about the matter:
As for Rebel EFI, the judge while expressing that Psystar was not very clear about what it does, refused to exclude it from the injunction, and says Psystar continues to sell it "at its peril" at the risk of "finding itself in contempt if its new venture falls within the scope of the injunction."

Intel: 600 GB SSD by the End of 2010?
According to Fudzilla, Intel could announce to some of its partners new series of SSD to be launched by the end of 2010. Those "Postville Refresh" models could have their capacity boosted up to 600 GB. This is not impossible as we will demonstrate it.
Both SSDs are from Intel. On the left side is the 80 GB model featuring 20 chips of 4 GB each. On the right is the latest model, aka Postville, offering 160 GB thank to only 10 chips of 16 GB each. By reducing the engraving process from 50 to 34 nm, one could increase density and storage capacity for the same size of chips. It will then be easy for Intel to replace the empty slot by some chips. Apple and a number of others cited for patent violations
The BetaNet company announced to have launched suits for patent violation against Apple, Microsoft, IBM, Kodak, Adobe… Apple is cited for its QuickTime software, iTunes and Aperture. The patents in question were deposited in 1993 have titles such as " Security system for the activation of software of personal computers on distant sites". It is difficult to dig into the layers of these patents, so it is hard for us to know if they are really violated. On the other hand, it is easy to appreciate that they want to make money from patents 17 years after their deposition.

iFixit frees up its manuals
iFixit who owes an impressive quantity of step by step instructions for disassembling Apple devices (91 for Mac and 34 for the iPod) announced that henceforth they would operate under the licence: Creative Commons BY-NC-SA. In essence, this licence makes it possible anyone to recover, modify, publish these documents as long as the original source is quoted and that the destination of the documents does not have a commercial use. In a few years, iFixit became a reference for the vast majority of the people who do not have access to the only more detailed source, the documents that Apple intends for its SAV and which are now translated in many languages.

Poetically enough announced via a tweet, the Zune team has given word that the long-awaited Twitter app is coming to Microsoft's little media player that could. Coupled with November's release of 3D games, by our count that leaves only Facebook left as the promised Zune app officially registering M.I.A. Apple building new PastryKit Web Apps framework
Daring Fireball has a video rundown of Apple's 'pastry kit' Web app Framework. That includes Mobile Safari's ability to fun fully compliant HTML5 applications with offline database storage. Google uses this for Gmail for example.
It would seem that Apple is preparing to take web apps more seriously, especially as it moves its customers to faster iPhone 3GS hardware. We can attest that the app isn't as smooth as the demo on older hardware.

Borders and Kobo join forces for e-reader device they can call their own
Fashionably late to the e-book handheld party, Borders and Kobo announced today a partnership that includes plans to develop and release both an e-reader and e-book service. Permanent injunction bans Psystar's Mac cloning activities
The US District Court for the Northern District of California has entered a final judgment granting Apple's motion for permanent injunction against Psystar. The decision effectively bans the clone maker from continuing to infringe on the Mac OS X copyrights, including manufacturing and distribution of non-Apple computers with the Mac operating system pre-installed.

McDonald's Wi-Fi to be permanently free
McDonald's tonight revealed that its Wi-Fi hotspots will soon be free. Microsoft releases Bing Search App for iPhone
Microsoft today unleashed their Bing App (App Store Link) for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app offers speach recognition of addresses and other features present in Google's iPhone application. It also offers the Bing daily image and related trivia.

There is a pretty interesting post over at Gizmodo detailing the security measures that Apple goes through to keep its products a secret. We've heard 'things' but nothing as severe as this 'Tom' guy is reporting. Our source tells us about the piece: "This is the paranoid/Hollywood version. Unless there is a leak suspected, you won't ever see something like this. If you do, they have a specific reason to search." And, for example, "stay at your desks" is probably more like "just continue working and if there's something you need to worry about i'll let you guys know".

Nexus One finally caught on video alongside its packaging
Frankly, we're surprised it took this long, but lo and behold, here we are with the first video of the Nexus One we've seen. It's just the all-too-brief and familiar boot animation, but thenexusone.com promises this is just one of many videos to come, and with any luck, a nicer video camera can be found in the interim. Chunghwa Picture Tubes churns out 21.5-inch capacitive touch panel
Big screen touch panels aren't anything new (or fancy), but a 21.5-inch capacitive touch panel is definitely pushing "drool-worthy" territory. In a presumably dingy corner of some overseas show floor, it looks as if Chunghwa Picture Tubes (or CPT, as the cool kids call it) has one of those very displays out for public viewing. Reportedly, the 21.5-incher has yet to reach mass production, but it's currently shipping 10.1-inch versions to an undisclosed amount of customers. As of now, the big boy is being "validated by clients," which means it'll probably be ready for mass consumption between next year and next century.

Toshiba Unveils 64 GB Flash Memory Chips
Toshiba announced the launch of the production of the first 64 GB NAND Flash memory chips. To reach such density, Toshiba piled up 16 layers of 4 GB each, interconnected via tinny wires.
Each layer has been engraved at 32 nm and the chips includes its own controller, making integration easier. The availability of such chips is expected for Q1 2010. It will allow companies such as Apple to increase storage capacity of their devices, offering 64 GB to the iPhone and up to 128 GB for the iPod Touch, enough to put the iPod Classic in the dust.
