HTC Hero / ERIS mega faceoff on video
Now that we've got the DROID ERIS in the mix, we're up to our ears in HTC Hero-derivative devices. We decided to sit the whole crew (GSM, Sprint and Verizon editions) down for a little modeling session, and we're finding ourselves reticent to pick a favorite. There are really plusses and minuses to each of them, but any way you lean it's a pretty good handset with some perhaps overly bulky software, a wonderful pricepoint (on Verizon, anyway) and probably a limited time in the sun with upcoming Android 2.0 devices, faster processors and wild new screens rolling on in. Report: Apple to launch Verizon iPhone in Q3 2010
A new report citing sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain says Apple has contracted to produce a UMTS/CDMA hybrid iPhone due in the third quarter of next year that will enable the company to sell a single global handset to all carriers, and specifically to Verizon Wireless in the US.

Verizon's Droid tethering plans to match iPhone's
Verizon late Thursday confirmed that it would add tethering to the Motorola Droid but clarified its plans. Contradicting a prior statement, it now says tethering when ready will cost $30 in addition to the phone's existing voice and data plans. It will also have a 5GB bandwidth cap before overage fees begin, though the tethering rate will be separate from the Droid's regular data.

Vers launches new Shellcases for iPhone, iPod touch
Vers, a company specializing in handcrafted wood, has added new open-front Shellcases to its product line. The models allow full access to the display of an iPhone or iPod. Ionic batteries could multiply battery life by 11
A new development by partly government-backed Fluidic Energy could potentially extend the battery life of notebooks, cars and other devices well beyond existing lithium-ion cells. Known as Metal-Air Ionic Liquid (MAIL), it would improve energy storage beyond relatively efficient zinc-air batteries by using an ionic liquid salt to conduct electricity that is much more stable and isn't prone to drying out either by accident or by eventual decay. The move would let battery makers use metals denser than zinc and therefore hold a much larger charge in a given volume.

Quirky announces Beamer iPhone case with built-in light
Quirky has announced a new addition to its line of iPhone 3G and 3GS accessories, the Beamer. The case features a hard plastic outer shell, and a two-piece design, requiring owners to remove the base before inserting an iPhone. Giving the case its name is an LED light, which can be used either as camera flash or a standalone light. A button triggers three different functions: 10-second lighting, constant light, or simply shutting off.

Canon EOS 7D firmware update cures 'residual image' phenomenon
Say what you will, but Canon's customer service / engineering department definitely looks out for consumers willing to spend just under two large on a new body. Apple launches Reserve and Pick Up retail program
Apple has unveiled a new program for its retail stores, Reserve and Pick Up. Via the company's website, shoppers can now opt to have products held for later purchase at a store they select. Only Macs and iPods are eligible however, and pickup must occur between December 15th and the 24th. As the program is meant to cope with potentially long holiday lineups, shoppers can also have some products wrapped.

Spanish translation of Mein Kampf appears on App Store
A Spanish translation of Mein Kampf has been launched at the App Store, observers note. Written in the 1920s by Adolf Hitler, the book is both an autobiography and a charter of the fascist, anti-Semitic policies that would come to guide the Third Reich. Apple Stores get a little nuts during the holidays. Apple is helping those who want to get in and out with "Reserve and Pick Up". It is what you'd think: You buy something online and pick it up at the nearest store. Verizon dismisses lack of Droid queues, calls lines "flashy"
The absence of long lines at most Verizon stores for the Motorola Droid is a positive sign, company spokesman David Samberg claimed today. According to the representative, Verizon believes early queues as "not really the goal" and that they are "flashy" more than a sign of actual built-up demand. The carrier would prefer to see a regular flow over coming weeks rather than an initial rush.

Unused Adamo XPS prototypes reveal touchscreen trackpads, key-less keyboard
Dell certainly managed to cram plenty of inventive, even far-fetched touches into its Adamo XPS laptop, but it looks like it went even further out on a limb during the prototype stage, as PC World was able to discover during a brief hands-on time with a few cast off concepts. iPhone developers still stealing phone numbers
If you have any of the iPhone games above, iPhone developer Storm 8 might have collected your iPhone number according to a lawsuit investigated by Boing Boing.

ARM provides early details of Eagle architecture
ARM president Tudor Brown at a presentation on Friday provided early details of his company's next-generation architecture for smartphones and other handhelds. Nicknamed Eagle, the processor design will focus on speed and come with a multi-core main processor, "high-end" graphics and better security against hardware-related attacks. Power use will be kept down by using GlobalFoundries' new 28 nanometer process and should get more efficient still when the assembly process shrinks to 22 nanometers.

Boxee beta to be unveiled on December 7th
The first public beta of Boxee will be shown on December 7th, according to its developer. The app is primarily used to stream movies and TV shows to an HDTV, including remote content from sources such as Hulu and Netflix. iPhone hits 17% smartphone share, passed by BlackBerry
Apple gained market share in the summer but slipped in the face of tougher competition, according to new IDC data. The iPhone's share of smartphones grew from 16.6 percent to 17.1 percent during the quarter but was overtaken by Research in Motion's record BlackBerry sales, which pushed it above Apple from 14.6 percent to 19 percent. Wir sind tatsächlich etwas beunruhigt. Erst jagt man uns die ganze Zeit Angst ein, dass die da unten beim CERN ein schwarzes Loch basteln könnten und jetzt das. Ein Vogel hat laut The Register ein Stück Brot auf ein empfindsames Aussenteil des Teilchenbeschleuniger plumpsen lassen, woraufhin das so heiss wurde, dass der LHC sich runtergefahren hätte, wenn er denn angewesen wäre. 67th and Broadwy Apple Store opens Nov. 14th
Media invitations went out today for the grand opening of Apple's 4th Manhattan Store, on 67th and Broadway. The date is set from a week from tomorrow on Saturday the 14th of November. By many accounts, this store is thought to be even more spectacular than the other Manhattan Apple Stores, including the iconic square cube venue on 5th Avenue.
While the store will miss today's Yankees ticker tape parade, it will be along the route of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade which heralds in the Holiday Shopping Season. It might make sense for Apple to use its location during the parade for publicity. Maybe we'll see a giant iPod floating down Broadway?

Glauben wir Eric Schmidt, dann ist die Krise, zumindest was den Technologiesektor betrifft, vorbei. CEOs waren schon immer die besten in selbsterfüllenden Prophezeiungen. Im Gespräch mit dem nuschelnden FOX Anchor gab es noch ein paar Seitenhiebe auf Microsoft, dessen Fehler Google nicht wiederholen will, etwas Gekuschel mit Obama, Selbstlob für Google Dashboard und eine dezente Empfehlung für die kommenden Regierungen, dass mit mehr Software und Technologie so eine Krise gar nicht erst hätte entstehen müssen. Erneute Hinweise auf RFID in der nächsten iPhone-Generation
Wie die Site Near Field Communications berichtet, sei es sehr wahrscheinlich, dass die nächste iPhone-Generation mit RFID-Chips ausgestattet ist. Der Bericht beruft sich auf Einar Rosenberg, Leiter der Gruppe Near Filed Communications im Businessnetzwerk LinkedIn. Security experts in denial on Mac security
Munir Kotadia is a journalist who specialises in internet security - and he’s had enough of security experts continued refusal to simply admit Macs are more secure.“Have you noticed the most popular laptop brand on display at any security conference?,” he writes, “In my experience Apple Macs seem to make up significantly more than the five percent usually attributed to them.”It goes on from there, with his chat with Dmitri Alperovitch, McAfee's vice president of threat research, posted below. Looking at Apple’s most recent financial report and this latest Digitimes explanation of growing shipments for notebook makers, it’s interesting to reflect that the 2,226,000 notebooks Apple shifted in its last quarter equates to approximately 20 per cent of Quanta’s c.3.5 milion units per month of notebook production.Quanta's shipments in October are estimated to have grown about 10% on month from 3.6 million units in September. Pogue on "App Phone" Droid: Toss up vs. iPhone
A couple of points to note:
AT&T's poor network is really killing the iPhone's popularity and Pogue points this out. As someone frequently in NYC, the iPhone is useless as a phone here. I know many people who have an iPhone and still need to use a Verizon phone for phone calls. The Droid will be tempting to them. I've had similar experiences in SF.
The Droid OS/apps are way less polished than the iPhone's. While it isn't getting a lot of airtime, I think this is akin to Windows vs. Mac. To many people, this won't matter. The Droid is definitely a techie phone. Everything from the name to the feature-set is for techies. Most people who've played with it so far are techie/journalists (like Pogue). It will be interesting to see what everyday smartphone users think.
Those docks are pretty cool but not a technology breakthrough. Apple should allow docks to communicate with the OS so that Belkin can create a $20

O2 UK to allow iPhone unlocks for competing carriers
UK iPhone owners subscribed to O2 will indeed be allowed to unlock for other carriers, according to the CEO of O2's parent company, Telefonica Europe. "Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks," says Matthew Key, "we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. PSA: Sears charging $50 less for new DROID activations than Verizon
If you walk into a Verizon store today and pick up a DROID, you'll be out $300 (before tax) out of pocket, then you'll twiddle your thumbs for a few weeks while you wait for some mysterious PO box in Texas to send you your $100 rebate on a debit card. Microsoft chief research officer Craig Mundie as part of his college tour this week demonstrated a unique concept for a future computing interface that would in many cases go without any touch input. ASUS O!Play AIR HDP-R3 arrives with WiFi and card reader
We had a sneak peek at ASUS' BR-HD3 just a week few back, and rather than holding out on us any longer, it looks as if the company has come forward to make things official. The O!Play Air HDP-R3 isn't a tremendous update from the previous edition, though the addition of 802.11n WiFi and a multimedia card reader are certainly appreciated. Reportedly, the media player packs an HDMI 1.3 socket, support for just about every file format known to man and a respectable price tag of around €90 ($133). Too bad the Yanks in attendance are left in the lurch.

Developer spying on iPhone gamers?
A California iPhone developer, Storm8, has been accused of spying on iPhone owners, according to court documents. A lawsuit was recently submitted on behalf of Washington resident Michael Turner, charging Storm8 with several violations including breaches of contract, the California Computer Crime Law and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. On August 26th, says Turner, the company openly admitted that its games had been illicitly collecting phone numbers.

Droid sees short launch lines
Early reports have suggested relatively small lineups for the Droid at Verizon stores. Visitors to most stores have seen lines of several people or less, with others seeing no lineups even with later early opening 8AM openings. The midnight opening at Verizon's 34th Street Manhattan store has also been described as modest, with one report so far suggesting that only 20 were in queue roughly an hour before it opened and no reports of the line growing much larger by 12AM.

Dieses Wochenende öffnet der erste französische Apple Store an prominenter Stelle direkt unter der Glaspyramide des Pariser Louvre. Zukünftig kann man also den Besuch bei Da Vincis Mona Lisa mit einem Abstecher bei Apple verbinden.

Windows 7 isn't having as large an impact on PC sales as initially thought, sources from manufacturers said on Friday. Although US retail sales were up 49 percent, those speaking to DigiTimes say they didn't see a major spike in late October and don't expect one for the rest of 2009. sipgate öffnet VoIP-Software für alle iPhone-Nutzer
Nach Firmen- können ab sofort auch Privatkunden die VoIP-Software von sipgate via App einsetzen. sipgate ist aktuell nach eigenen Angaben der einzige deutsche VoIP-Provider, der eine App für das iPhone anbietet (aber vgl. beispielsweise Skype oder Nimbuzz).

Wo das "i" vom iMac, iPod & Co. herkommt
Cult of Mac hat Ken Segall interviewt, den Mann, dem der iMac und damit wohl auch iPod, iPhone & Co. ihre Namen verdanken. Zudem hat Segall in seiner Funktion als Kreativdirektor bei der Apple-Werbeagentur TBWA\Chiat\Day 1997 die "Think Different"-Kampagne mitkonzipiert und damit wahrscheinlich nicht unwesentlich zur Rettung der damals kurz vor der Pleite Apple Computer Inc. beigetragen.
Den Namen iMac hat Apple-Boss Steve Jobs übrigens zweimal abgelehnt, um ihn am Ende doch noch zu verwenden. Jobs' eigener Namensvorschlag für den damals revolutionären Computer war laut Segall so schlimm, dass er ihn auch heute noch nicht wiedergeben will.

Samsung announces 32GB multilayer memory chips
The usual way to increase the capacity of a chip memory is to reduce the size of the transistors. The principal disadvantage is that it needs a heavy investments in R&D and it is limited to existing technologies. Another, which in is still at its beginnings consists in piling up layers of transistors and interconnecting them in order to make only one chip. This is what Samsung has done an d they have announced a chip of 32 GB made up of 8 layers of 4 GB. Each layer is engraved in 30 nm and the whole thing is only 0,6 mm thick. The market intereested in this is that of the mobile phones primarily or that of the mp3 players such as the iPod Touch. One day one will be able to perhaps use these chips to manufacture SSD.
If one puts 20 in a 2,5" package, it will reach 640 GB :)

Die Inhalte von Bild.de und Welt.de wird es voraussichtlich auf dem iPhone bald nur noch gegen Bezahlung geben, so der Plan des Axel-Springer-Verlags. Der Verlag will noch in diesem Jahr kostenpflichtige iPhone-Applikationen für Bild.de und Welt.de veröffentlichen. Lenovos Gewinn steigt im zweiten Fiskalquartal um 130 Prozent
Lenovo hat im zweiten Fiskalquartal (bis 30. September) seinen Gewinn um 130 Prozent von 23 Millionen Dollar auf 53 Millionen Dollar gesteigert. Moto Droid goes on sale in NYC
As promised, Verizon tonight launched the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris at its primary retail store on 34th Street in New York City. The midnight opening is the first official launch in the country but follows numerous reports from those who have visited Best Buy and Walmart stores and successfully obtained the phone ahead of its official street date. Walmart Super Center stores are also typically opening sales at midnight, though the next earliest opportunity will involve the 7AM and 8AM openings at some non-mall Verizon stores.

Samsung annonce multilayer memory chips of 32 GB
The usual way to increase the capacity of a chip memory is to reduce the size of the transistors. The principal disadvantage is that it needs a heavy investments in R&D and it is limited to existing technologies. Another, which in is still at its beginnings consists in piling up layers of transistors and interconnecting them in order to make only one chip. This is what Samsung has done an d they have announced a chip of 32 GB made up of 8 layers of 4 GB. Each layer is engraved in 30 nm and the whole thing is only 0,6 mm thick. The market intereested in this is that of the mobile phones primarily or that of the mp3 players such as the iPod Touch. One day one will be able to perhaps use these chips to manufacture SSD.
If one puts 20 in a 2,5" package, it will reach 640 GB :)

iRobot creates new business unit for healthcare robotics
Well, it doesn't have a Roomba that will check up on your vitals just yet, but it looks like iRobot is betting on healthcare robotics in a fairly big way, with it taking advantage of the recent TEDMED conference to announce that it's forming a new business unit focused solely on the still burgeoning industry. RadTech launches OtterBox Commuter Series cases for iPhone
RadTech has released the OtterBox Commuter Series, a new multi-layer iPhone hardcase. The inner layer is silicone for soft-surface protection from scratches and impacts, while the outer layer is hard polycarbonate for impact protection. The new cases also come with a transparent film cover for the iPhone screen. The ports are all available, with extra protection for the audio jack and 30-pin protector when not in use.

Acer Liquid handled, evaluated, 'not too shabby'
Looks like quite a few folks have got their hands on the Acer Liquid as of late, and lucky for us they've been rather loose-lipped with their thoughts on the subject. As suspected, the handset is running a 1GHz Snapdragon that's been under-clocked to 768MHz. Windows 7 retail sales 234% higher than for Vista
The NPD Group today revealed that initial Windows 7 sales were more than twice as strong as for Vista. Although declining to provide the number of copies estimated sold, the researchers note that boxed, retail unit sales of the new OS were 234 percent higher in the first few days than the 2007 release. The jump is credited to both to steep pre-order discounts, strong marketing and similar approaches that helped ship a large number of initial copies.

iPhone vs DROID multitouch keyboard showdown (video)
I just dashed off this quick video for my Twitter followers to demonstrate that the DROID doesn't have a multitouch soft keyboard, and pretty much instantly realized that I should probably share it with everyone else, since we've been getting a lot of questions about it. Long story short, while Android 2.0 and the DROID's hardware support multitouch, the device itself doesn't do multitouch out-of-the-box, and the soft keyboard suffers mightily for it. Psystar Violates Open Source APSL Licensing Agreement
To defend its position against Apple, Psystar claims that terms of use in Mac OS X licensing are restrictive and block competitors by preventing anyone to install Mac OS X on a non-Apple hardware. So, as a consequence, Psystar is not violating any law by selling PC running pre-installed and legally purchased Mac OS X. The company received support from many users who would be interested in running the famous Mac OS X on their own hardware without requiring to by a Apple-branded model. New iMac 27": Performance Lags
A rather annoying problem has been reported with the new iMac 27" (and only this model). The system seems to be using a large part of the available CPU load for an unknown function without any obvious reason. While a flash player was originally suspected, it could only be a way to identify the already existing symptom: excessive CPU request.The problem might be indirectly linked to Airport, as cycling Airport activity (turning your wireless network on and off) could help to stop temporary the performance lag. Some users suspect a problem with the PCI Express channels. Indeed, the Airpot card as well as some component of the GPU make use of the PCI Express. Comcast implements new throttling system
Comcast in a new FCC notice (PDF) revealed that it has already begun implementing a new throttling system. The approach is now service-agnostic and will lower the priority of any data packets if a user's cable modem either tops 70 percent of download or upload bandwidth for more than 15 minutes or else is flagged as bogging down the CMTS node, which manages a neighborhood's cable modem traffic.

Intel Accused of Paying Billions USD to Dell and Others for Preserving its Exclusivity
While some US citizen were complaining against recent legal actions conducted by the European Commission against Intel, today's news indicate that some US authorities are also interesting by illegal business strategies followed by Intel.
