Comcast announces new bandwidth throttling scheme (update: old news)
Comcast customers have been no stranger to bandwidth shenanigans over the years, from the whole torrent filtering mess to the 250GB monthly cap. Now the company is back with a new data throttling scheme intended to put the kibosh on excessive traffic during those times when the network is already being overwhelmed. Early Windows 7 sales smash all-time records
Sales of Windows 7 have broken Microsoft's sales records for an initial operating system launch, company CEO Steve Ballmer said at a Japanese press event today. The executive said early sales have been "fantastic" and that the new OS has generated more revenue in its first 10 days than any earlier version of Windows. He declined to provide specific revenue or unit numbers.

RIM plans $1.2b stock buy-back as iPhone factor impacts growth
BlackBerry-maker, Research In Motion (RIM), has announced plans to repurchase $1.2 billion in stock in order to compensate shareholders for the company’s slowing rate of growth.RIM forecast its sales would slow down in its third quarter to deliver numbers shy of analyst projections, which Bloomberg terms as a sign it may have to reduce product prices to take in the iPhone.The company isn’t too concerned at the cost of the stock buyback, saying that it would be able to continue to work on company growth, because it has plenty of cash in the bank and steady cash flow models for the coming quarters.It intends repurchasing c.3.6% of its outstanding stock, around 21 million shares.This news emerges as market chatter c

Apple opens Louvre Store, France's first
Apple today announced the opening the first Apple Store in France, at the Carrousel du Louvre shopping center. Apple plans other French Store openings in Montpellier in ten days and another Paris Location, Opéra next summer. Apple also looks to have a new Upper West Side NYC Store opening in the next few weeks.

8GB iPhone 3GS en route to AT&T?
We've heard the reports that Canada's Rogers was going to introduce an 8GB iPhone 3GS a few months ago, but now BGR is hearing that AT&T has similar plans to replace the low end $99 iPhone 3G with a faster iPhone 3GS. Faster processor, more RAM faster network speeds at same price just in time for Christmas shoppers according to their source. They also added:

Windows 7 sales 234% higher than Vista's first few days according to NPD
Looks like Windows 7 is off to a much stronger start than Windows Vista, with the NPD Group claiming the first few days of sales saw a 234% increase over Vista's start. Part of that can be attributed to special deals and low-cost pre-sales -- total revenue was only 82% higher -- but it's hard to deny people are stoked for Windows 7. Interestingly, the PC hardware growth was actually stronger for Vista than 7 (48% year over year compared to 68% year over year), but there are enough variables at play there to make sure Microsoft won't lose sleep over it. Nvidia macht deutlich mehr Umsatz und Gewinn

AT&T to carry 8GB iPhone 3GS by holidays?
Apple and AT&T may use an 8GB iPhone 3GS as a 'secret weapon' against the launch of the Motorola Droid if a rumor proves accurate. Two separate sources of BGR's say the two iPhone partners are considering replacing the existing 8GB iPhone 3G with a 3GS variant, preserving the same capacity and $99 price. The move would undercut Verizon by offering the latest iPhone at the same price as the less ambitious Droid Eris.

e-on has launched Vue 8 Infinite and Vue 8 xStream, new editions of its environmental rendering software. The updates were announced in mid-October, and deliver a series of new features for 3D terrain sculpting, plus increased xStream integration for improved workflow with various CG programs. Apple to hire new iPhone security manager
Apple is looking to hire a new iPhone manager with significant responsibilities, observers note. In particular the company is now searching for an "iPhone OS Platform Security Manager," who will be responsible for a team securing the booting, installation and running of the firmware. The worker is also expected to help plot a roadmap for iPhone security, and bring at least three years of experience running a development team, plus hands-on knowledge in designing against hardware and software exploits.

Verizon offers prepaid 3G data service
On Thursday, Verizon Wireless said it has added three new prepaid mobile broadband data plans. Users can now opt for a $15 daily data allowance that includes 75MB of data, a $30 weekly package that includes 250MB of data and a $50 monthly offering with 500MB of data. These will be sold alongside a Verizon Wireless USB760 modem, priced at $130.

NVIDIA Tegra 2 twice as fast as the original?
A source today claims the sequel to NVIDIA's Tegra mobile processor could muster double the performance of the original. The new chip is purported by "high ranking" industry contacts to be switching from an ARM7 architecture to the much newer ARM9 and also to use a dual-core design. Combined with improvements to the graphics core, the updated Tegra would be roughly twice as fast overall.

Verizon to hold midnight Droid launch in NYC
Verizon in a last-minute update today moved up the launch of the Motorola Droid for just one of its stores. Its flagship store on 34th Street in New York City will open at 12AM tonight for two hours to sell the Droid, the HTC Droid Eris, and accessories like the Droid's horizontal dock. This and other stores in the city will still open early afterwards, with most ready between 7AM and 8AM.

Motorola DROID goes on sale a little early at Best Buy Mobile
Looks like the DROID invasion is starting a little early -- we were just sent these pics of Motorola's beastly Android slider on sale at an unspecified Best Buy Mobile somewhere deep within America's heartland. Or perhaps it's lurking around the fringe of our nation's coasts. AMD GPU shortage delaying new PCs?
PC vendors that rely on AMD graphics cards are delaying their shipments scheduled for the first quarter of 2010 by nearly two months, say sources at the manufacturers, DigiTimes claimed on Thursday. Radeon HD 5000-series GPUs and HD 4000-series GPUs are reportedly facing shortages through a combination of factors. Apple may be working on an easier and more comprehensive method of syncing data between devices, a new patent application hints. Netflix shipping out PS3 instant streaming discs!
It's been a long wait for PS3 users, who had to look on in envy as their Xbox 360 counterparts kicked back and started streaming Netflix as of July last year. Well, the wait is finally over, as PS3 instant streaming discs are being sent out to Netflix users (who've requested them) as we speak. Looks like our friend Jonathan here has a Friday delivery in store for him, while the lazier ones among us hunker down for an XMB software update late next year to let us stream Netflix to the PS3 disc-free, in keeping with the natural order of things.

Orb Networks has launched a Mac port of its self-named media streaming software. EU to require right to defense in "3 strikes" cases
The European Parliament today agreed on a new set of legal protections for those threatened with losing Internet access under anti-piracy rules. The new measure in the EU's Telecoms Reform Package considers Internet access a "fundamental" right and will require that EU countries implement a "fair and impartial" process if their laws allow for disconnecting alleged pirates. It will also permit those facing a disconnection to legally dispute their case, though this won't necessarily be part of the regular process.

We've seen some crazy phones in our day, many of them from Casio, as it turns out, but the G'zOne Brigade really pushes the envelope. It's a ruggedized, weatherproof, Push to Talk QWERTY clamshell, with some of the odder physical protrusions we've seen on a handset this decade. Microsoft bestätigt Abbau von weiteren 800 Stellen

DROID ERIS hands-on and unboxing!
Hey look, it's a Hero! We've got the brand new DROID ERIS for Verizon in hand, and it's not hard to see which particular family of phones it hails from. Still, Verizon has its own twist on the form factor, almost scoring a compromise between the "shiny" Sprint Hero and the more angular, matte GSM Hero. Confusingly, the capacitive touch buttons along the bottom of the ERIS' screen are a haphazard twist on the DROID's arrangement (though it's really Motorola that's the non-standard one here), but the phones don't look completely unrelated. In all the rounded, black matte body of the ERIS sort of "fades away" and you're just left with a nice, bright LCD -- it's not making a statement, which is sort of the statement.

Verizon ships Droid Eris, Curve 8530
Verizon this morning preceded the launch of the Motorola Droid two expected new smartphones, including its second Android phone. The HTC Droid Eris, also known as the Desire, is Verizon's interpretation of the Hero and comes in an all-black design with touch-sensitive buttons below the 3.2-inch screen as well as a trackball for one-handed use. It still carries the 5-megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi, and still uses HTC's original Sense UI layer and built-in web browser Flash.

IDS Scheer korrigiert Jahresprognose nach Umsatzrückgang
IDS Scheer hat in den ersten neun Monaten 2009 259,4 Millionen Euro umgesetzt, knapp 35 Millionen weniger als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres (294,1 Millionen Euro). Das operative Ergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen auf immaterielle Vermögenswerte (EBITA) stieg hingegen um 42 Prozent auf 23,1 Millionen Euro, die EBITA-Marge von 5,5 auf 8,9 Prozent. Sony Ericsson Kurara suffers leakage, reveals HD label?
Boy, we sure do love our early glimpses of pre-release hardware, and today we have not one, but two sources of purported pictures of the Sony Ericsson Kurara. Touted as a sibling to the Satio, the Kurara is mooted to have a 3.5-inch AMOLED touch-sensitive screen, 8.1 megapixel camera and, wait for it, 720p video recording. The image above seems to confirm this with a big "HD" inscription next to the camera lens, but that label is missing in the gallery below. We'll just put that inconsistency down to the extremely early samples on show, and start getting all frothed up in excitement over the possible UX inclusion on this Symbian S60 device when it starts selling in the first half of 2010.

Telekom steigert Umsatz und Gewinn im dritten Quartal
Die Deutsche Telekom hat ihren Umsatz und Gewinn im dritten Quartal weiter gesteigert. Zwischen Juli und September stieg der Gewinn vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) um 5,2 Prozent auf 5,5 Milliarden Euro. Dass es immer noch einen Markt für Webcams gibt, ist ja eigentlich schon eine kleine News wert, bei solchen hier allerdings sind wir komplett dabei. Lang lebe die Pixar-Ästhetik. Die iPevo P2V würden wir uns auch einfach nur so auf den Schreibtisch stellen. Wir kramen auch schon die 70 Dollar zusammen. Die muss man für die 2-Megapixel-Kamera hinlegen. Lenovo goes crazy, lets you switch Fn and Ctrl keys in BIOS
Some people, including certain Engadget editors, just can't live without a Ctrl key in the bottom left of their keyboard and a Delete key in the top right. Call it Windows shortcut addiction, but the miniscule adjustment of having to step one key inwards to do our thing totally messes with our mojo. Apple Stores: Kreditkartenkauf wird zukünftig über iPod touch abgewickelt
Wenn es besonders schnell gehen muss, kann man in den Apple Retail Stores anstatt an der Kasse direkt bei einem der mit einem sogenannten "EasyPay Checkout System" genannten Handheld-Geräten bezahlen, über die der Kauf dann bargeldlos abgewickelt wird - die Rechnung erhält man dann per E-Mail. Die Tatsache allerdings, dass eine Windows Mobile-Version als Betriebssystem auf den verwendeten Geräten installiert ist, war sicherlich alles andere als erfreulich für die Apple-Verantwortlichen.
Jetzt soll sich das ändern: Die Apple Store-Mitarbeiter werden zukünftig standesgemäß mit einem iPod touch kassieren. Die Geräte kommen mit einer speziell modifizierten Software und stecken in einer Kunststoffhülle mit integriertem Barcode-Leser. Einziger Trade-off: Für die Unterschrift des Kunden wird ein Stift verwendet. Auch wenn das Bedienkonzept des iPod touch komplett auf die Bedienung ohne zusätzliche Hilfsmittel ausgelegt ist, eine Unterschrift mit dem Finger zu zeichnen wäre nahezu unmöglich. Cisco übertrifft Erwartungen im ersten Fiskalquartal 2010
Cisco Systems hat in seinem ersten Fiskalquartal 2010 (bis 24. Oktober) 9 Milliarden Dollar umgesetzt. Der Nettogewinn beläuft sich auf 1,8 Milliarden Dollar oder 0,36 Dollar je Aktie. Intel prosecuted for unfair competition in the US
After being condemned in Europe with a fine of 1,06 billion Euros for unfair competition, Intel will have to face a similar procedure in the United States. The public prosecutor of New York set in motion the procedure claiming that Intel blocked its main competitor, AMD.
The procedure will take a long time but it is possible that there will be a new judgment against Intel, and this could cost them more since the American antitrust laws are without pity. Note, if Intel opened a little more with competition, one could see AMD leaving its hole, NVidia to propose new chipsets and for USB 3.0 to be in public use much earlier.

Unter dem Motto "Mobile Arbeit braucht sichere IKT" befassten sich während des SimoBIT-Jahreskongresses am 02.11. in Köln rund 150 Experten mit aktuellen Ergebnissen des BMWi-Förderprogramms "Sichere Anwendung der mobilen Informationstechnik in Wirtschaft und Verwaltung". Eine aktuelle im Rahmen der SimoBIT-Begleitforschung durchgeführte repräsentative Anwenderbefragung führt zu dem Ergebnis, dass bei größeren KMU, die komplexere mobile IKT zur Optimierung von Wertschöpfungsprozessen einsetzen, durchschnittliche Einsparungen bei den operativen Kosten von bis zu 20 % möglich sind. Neuigkeiten in Sachen Eee Keyboard. Das ist ja einerseits immer noch nicht zu haben und andererseits - offenbar - auch immer noch nicht wirklich fertig. Die Kollege von Register Hardware haben nämlich gerade einen neuen Prototypen in die Hände bekommen, bei dem der Touchscreen plötzlich kapazitativ ist, also so wie auf dem iPhone ohne Feedback auskommt. Funzt besser, sagen die Techniker. Kaufen können soll man das Keyboard jetzt übrigens frühestens Anfang kommenden Jahres. Ach, und eine Plastik-Version soll es auch geben für alle mit Aluminium-Allergie.

Apple hat in der Nacht auf Heute eine weitere Vorabversion des nächsten Minor-Updates für Mac OS X Snow Leopard an die registrierten Entwickler verteilt. 99 Cent-Film pausiert, bald Gratis-Songs?
Falls sich jemand fragt, wo der 99 Cent-Film diese Woche bleibt - gibt's nicht. Der Action-Film Unleashed wurde vorübergehend per Banner als dieser beworben, allerdings nicht im Preis reduziert. Mittlerweile ist das Banner auch wieder aus dem Store verschwunden.
Eine Kleinigkeit könnte man denken, allerdings häufen sich diese "Kleinigkeiten" und Schlampereien in letzter Zeit. Wenn wir ein Auge zudrücken, lässt sich so etwas sicher mit dem starken Wachstum einzelner iTunes-Bereiche entschuldigen. Erst gestern vermeldete Apple, dass über den iTunes Store inzwischen mehr als 100.000 Anwendungen für den iPod touch und das iPhone angebeoten werden. Gartner: PC-Bauer liebäugeln mit Smartphone-Markt
PC-Hersteller nehmen verstärkt den boomenden Markt für Smartphones ins Visier, um dem Einbruch bei PC-Verkäufen entgegenzuwirken, so das IT-Marktforschungs- und Beratungsunternehmen Gartner. Die Verkaufszahlen von Smartphones weltweit werden sich im Jahr 2009 auf 180 Millionen Stück belaufen, das sind 29 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. Der Markt für Smartphones überholt damit den Notebook-Verkauf in Stückzahlen.
Laut Gartner beläuft sich der Anteil der PC-Hersteller (ohne Apple!) am Smartphone-Markt seit Jahren konstant auf insgesamt weniger als 1 Prozent. Die Analysten erwarten, dass bis Ende 2009 alle großen PC-Hersteller das Ziel zumindest ankündigen werden, auch im Smartphone-Markt präsent zu sein. Gartner prognostiziert allerdings, dass kein einzelner PC-Hersteller in den kommenden drei Jahren einen Marktanteil von mehr als 2 Prozent erreichen wird. Derzeit haben Smartphones laut Studie einen Anteil von 14 Prozent am Weltmarkt für Mobiltelefone, der bis 2010 allerdings auf 37 Prozent ansteigen soll.

That's the world's largest capacity 1.8-inch hard disk drive right there. A claim met by a list of specs going a little something like this: 3.0Gbps SATA interface, 320GB capacity, 5,400 RPM, 16MB buffer, and 19dB of emitted noise during seeks -- a 4dB cut from Toshiba's previous generation of 5,400 RPM 1.8-inchers. Of course, these 1.8-inch mechanical HDDs are the form factor most commonly found in those netbook-shoving CULV thin-and-light ultraportables now coming onto the market. Western Digital annonce their first SAS hard drive
Western Digital is well known for its ranges of hard drives: these are the models: Green, Black or Velociraptor. Until now, they were confined to the SATA interface certainly aimed for the general public, but still largely supplanted in the world of the servers by SAS. They have just announce the first disk with this standard, the S25.
To keep this short, this disk is on all points similar to Velociraptor on the level of the capacity (147 or 300 GB) and also on the level of the performances except for the new interface. Thus, Western comes out to hunt in the grounds of Seagate who still reigns as a master in the market of SAS 2,5" disks.

T-Mobile 7.2Mbps HSPA rolling out now?
Reports are coming in, by and large it seems via Android and Me, that T-Mobile's begun its rollout of its 7.2Mbps HSPA network for some extra speedy mobile browsing. We've done some testing in the listed cities, notably Chicago and New York, but so far are coming up with the usual, mundane speeds. It'd certainly make up for yesterday's snafu (almost), but at this point we're classifying as unconfirmed. Anyone else having better luck?

Apple 10.6.2 10C540 seed "Resolves an issue with plugging and unplugging to an Apple TV", VMWare kernel, Airport on new iMacs
Apple's got an interesting seed note with the latest 10.6.2 release (10C540). Under the GraphicsDrivers category, it says:
"Resolves an issue with plugging and unplugging to an Apple TV"
We're not quite sure what that means but it could be a strange way of saying that AppleTVs when connected/disconnected to the MacOS cause issues. The 27" iMac only takes Mini DisplayPort in, and the Apple TV only does Component and HDMI out. It isn't likely that AppleTV 3.0 was updated to a Snow Leopard kernel is it?

LG sees Apple, not Nokia, as chief rival
LG now considers the iPhone one of its largest competitors in the smartphone space, CEO Yong Nam said in a Washington presentation today. He dismisses both market leader Nokia and Sony Ericsson as rivals and instead says most of LG's energy is now focused on beating Apple, Palm and Research in Motion. Latest Mac OS X 10.6.2 beta build brings back Atom support
Well, it looks like reports that Apple might be killing Atom support in the next Snow Leopard update may have been slightly overblown, as the latest developer build of OS X 10.6.2 (10C535) has apparently restored support for the processor and simultaneously brightened the spirits of hackintoshers the world over. What's more, there doesn't appear to be any explanation for the switch-a-roo from Apple which, as Electronista notes, could indicate that it was simply a bug or a temporary measure -- although it does of course also mean that Apple can just as easily flip the switch again if it sees fit

Supertalent announces a USB 3.0 key, RAIDDrive.
Like its name indicates, and following the example of the SSD, it reads and writes simultaneously on several chips so as to increase the data flow. On a USB 3.0 connector, it will be able to read the data at 200 MB/s. This speed will be able to increase to 320 MB/s by using the protocol UAS (USB Attached SCSI). It will be offered soon in 32,64 and 128 GB at a price point still to be defined. All that remains is to find a compatible computer and UAS drivers, since these are not being provided by Supertalent.

Some more perspective on the DROID and multitouch
There's been a whirlwind of chatter about Apple's multitouch patents since the Motorola DROID was released to reviewers sans any built-in support for Android 2.0's multitouch APIs -- there's no pinch-to-zoom in the browser or maps app, and the soft keyboard is decidedly a single-touch affair.
