Vivitek to shake up HD projector market with 1080p H1080FD at $999
Sophomore slump? Fuhgetaboutit. After announcing its very first projectors last year with little to no fanfare at all, Vivitek is looking to get everyone's attention with an all new 1080p model that should hit US retail outlets this August. DYMO makes 450-series label printers official
After surfacing earlier this month, DYMO today officially launched three new label printers in its LabelWriter 450 series. Sony debuts 6.1-inch NV-U3DV navigation unit
Well, it's not the Android-based Walkman / PND that Sony supposedly has in the works for next year, but we're guessing the company's new NV-U3DV navigation will still turn a few heads nonetheless, and not just because of its large 6.1-inch screen. Launched today in Japan, this PND packs a 480x272 resolution on that big new screen for bigger buttons and more map space, along with a number of fairly unique features like Position+ G, which makes use of an accelerometer, gyro-sensor, and pressure sensors to detect the direction of the vehicle even in touchy environments like a tunnel or high incline. Hackers break iPhone push messaging, blame Apple
A variety of sources have published a story accusing the iPhone 3.0 software of broadcasting "your AIM [instant] messages to random recipients without your knowledge or consent." In reality, the problem is created by hackers experimenting with their phones without understanding what they were doing. Revamped Sony S-Series Walkman pops up in leaked press photos
The well-connected chaps at Sony Insider have it on very good word that the above press shot is showing what'll be a new addition to Sony's Walkman lineup, likely a revision to its popular S Series. Hard to tell scale, but looks like either the screen's gotten bigger or the device smaller. LG ships record 29.8m phones in spring
LG claimed to be flying in the face of the phone industry today with claims of a record spring quarter. Apple Legal is having a bad day...
According to some Redmond Seattle News Station, iPods get hot and sometimes catch on fire. In S. Korea that led to a recall(dirty secret - they sold those exact same iPods in the US). A word of caution to those with home directories on secondary drives.
Most people keep their home folders in the default location on their boot drives and the system can access it just fine; however, a few individuals enjoy keeping their boot drives free of user accounts and choose instead to have them on a secondary hard drive. This has the benefit of offering more versatility in managing disk space for user files and applications, but can result in problems if care is not given.

Sony said to have seriously considered second analog nub for PSP Go
It's no secret that a second analog nub was one of the biggest demands for what's now known as the PSP Go and, according to Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida, those requests were heard loud and clear during the Go's development. Hitachi develops biometric payment system, uses it to sell junk food
Looks like Hitachi has made some serious headway on the biometric payment system we first heard about way back in the halcyon days of 2007. According to the Mainichi Daily News, the company is currently testing its Finger Vein Authentication System internally, with the device serving as a method of payment for vending machines and the like. Sophos hat seinen "Security Threat Report" für das erste Halbjahr 2009 vorgelegt. Ihm zufolge wurde in diesem Zeitraum alle 3,6 Sekunden eine Website mit Schadcode infiziert. OS 3.0: Was fehlt dem iPod touch G1?

Apple, Toshiba reach half billion dollar flash deal
Apple has agreed a half-billion dollar deal with Toshiba Corp for the supply of flash memory chips, as used in iPhones, most iPods and many of its laptops.
The computer company has made a $500 million prepayment to Toshiba in order to secure supplies. Toshiba is the world’s second largest supplier of flash memory, with Apple also sourcing same from the world’s largest supplier, Samsung.
The $500 million deal is “equivalent to about one quarter’s worth of Apple’s demand for flash memory”, Reuters explains.

Foxconn security suspended in iPhone suicide probe
Foxconn owner the Hon Hai Group has suspended a security official following the tragic suicide of a young Chinese engineer who lost a fourth-generation iPhone prototype.
As reported yesterday, Sun Danyong, (26) jumped from the roof of his factory dormitory to his death following his loss of one of 16 iPhone prototypes. There’s a Google image of the factory illustrated.

Yahoos zweites Quartal übertrifft Erwartungen von Analysten
Yahoo hat im zweiten Quartal 2009 einen Umsatzrückgang von 13 Prozent auf 1,573 Milliarden Dollar verbucht. Der Nettogewinn stieg gegenüber dem zweiten Quartal des Vorjahres um acht Prozent auf 141 Millionen Dollar oder 0,10 Dollar je Aktie. OnStar debuts Remote Ignition Block to shut down stolen vehicles
OnStar's already rolled out a method for slowing down stolen vehicles once the cops have 'em in sight, and it looks like it's now come up with a solution for the ones that get away as well. Ein Bericht von Allot zeigt für das zweite Quartal 2009 einen Anstieg von 30 Prozent hinsichtlich der weltweiten Nutzung von mobiler Datenbandbreite. Allot Communications sieht sich als führend auf dem Gebiet der Optimierung von IP-Dienstleistungen und Lösungen für Einkommensgenerierung, die auf Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) basieren. In ihrem ersten "Global Mobile Broadband Traffic Report" (GMBT) werden die Wachstumstreiber wie folgt aufgeschlüsselt: Asien liegt mit 36% Wachstum in Führung; Europa konnte ein Wachstum von 28% verzeichnen und Nord- u. 802.11n könnte im September endlich als finaler Standard verabschiedet werden
Wie PC Magazine berichtet, scheint der Weg von 802.11n zum fertigen Standard möglicherweise nicht mehr weit zu sein. In einer Rundmail wurde demnach bekannt gegeben, dass sich alle beteiligten Unternehmen auf die finalen Spezifikationen von 802.11n einigen konnten. LHC-Neustart voraussichtlich erst im November 2009
Schlechte Nachrichten aus Genf: Bei der Überprüfung der Magnete des Teilchenbeschleunigers LHC wurden in zwei Sektoren Lecks im Kühlsystem gefunden. PSP video downloads direct from PSN go live in Japan
We've known since E3 in June that Sony would open up the PlayStation Network for direct video downloads over WiFi to the PSP -- no PC or PS3 required. Now it's live, in Japan anyway. At the moment, there are about 90 PSN video titles to choose from at the moment including anime episodes at ¥200 (about $2) per or animated movies for ¥500 ($5.30) in standard definition or ¥600 ($6.40) for HD. Large Hadron Collider restart, end of the world pushed back to mid-November
Still undecided about what to do with those precious few months before the biggest doomsday since Y2K? Then you're in luck, 'cause the much anticipated / feared restart of the Large Hadron Collider has now been delayed yet again, almost exactly a month after the last delay. This time it looks like a couple of vacuum leaks are the culprit, and CERN says that the collider is now unlikely to restart before mid-November, which just so happens to coincide with the peak of the Leonids meteor shower. Intel Atom N450 "Pineview" processor delayed until next year?
We'd recommend taking this one with a hefty grain of salt for the time being as Intel isn't saying anything on the matter itself just yet, but DigiTimes is reporting / speculating that Intel's Atom N450 "Pineview" processor (and the Pine Trail platform that goes along with) has been delayed until next year. That processor, as you may recall, was apparently on track to debut sometime in the last quarter of this year, but DigiTimes says Intel has decided to push it back a bit so as not to shake up the netbook market too much in the second half of 2009.

Einer aktuellen Studie von Forrester Research zufolge soll sich der Umsatzanteil digitaler Medien in den kommenden fünf Jahren verdoppeln. Dies habe nach Aussage der befragten Marketiers u. a. damit zu tun, dass digitales Marketing die Experimentierphase hinter sich gelassen hat. Über die Hälfte der Werbetreibenden erwarten, dass die Effizienz der Kanäle Direct Mail, TV-Spots, Printmagazine, Plakaterbung oder Radio in den nächsten Jahren stagnieren oder abnehmen wird. Hingegen glauben über 70%, dass digitale Channels wie Social Media, Online Video und Mobiles Marketing an Effizienz zulegen werden. Der Effekt ist laut Forrester drastisch: Während sich voraussichtlich nur 12% der Gesamtwerbeausgaben im laufenden Jahr digitaler Werbeformen bedienen wird, soll sich dieser Anteil in den nächsten fünf Jahren auf ca. 21% annähernd verdoppeln.

Apple vermeldet erneut hervorragende Quartalszahlen
Apple meistert die Wirtschaftskrise weiterhin mit Bravour: "Wir sind über 5,2 Millionen verkaufte iPhones im zurückliegenden Quartal begeistert" sagte Apple-Boss Steve Jobs nach der gestrigen Bekanntgabe der Ergebnisse des dritten Quartals im Geschäftsjahr 2009. Apple hat rund sechsmal so viele iPhones verkauft wie im entsprechenden Vorjahresquartal und auch die Zahl der verkauften Macs stieg um vier Prozent.
Lediglich die Zahl der verkauften iPods ist um sieben Prozent gefallen, zumindest ein Teil der hier fehlenden Käufer dürfte in die Kategorie iPhone übergesiedelt sein. Der Rückgang bei den iPods betrifft zudem nur die klassischen Modelle, laut Apple-Finanzchef Peter Oppenheimer hat sich der iPod touch im abgelaufenen Quartal mit rund 130 Prozent Zuwachs bestens verkauft

Motorola's Morrison Android phone looks familiar. Why?
Below is Motorola's new Android phone. But, it kinda looks like everyone's favorite Apple phone - one you'd mistakingly buy on the streets of Shenzen. Although, it does have a slide out keyboard which (has to be said) we've wished for on a few occasions.
It is strange that 4-5 years ago, Motorola was helping Apple enter the mobile phone business with the ROKR. How things have changed.

Apple comments on factory worker death
Earlier today, reports out of China claimed factory worker Sun Danyong had jumped to his death following a Foxconn search of his apartment. He had been carrying 4th generation iPhone prototypes and had lost one of the 16 he was carrying. While this event is a tragedy, there no doubt will be many questions surrounding his death. Apple has been steadily moving its MacBook manufacturing away from Foxconn and to Quanta of late.

Apple Reports Third Quarter Results. Best Non-Holiday Quarter Revenue and Earnings in Apple History
Highlights:
- revenue of $8.34 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.23 billion or $1.35 per diluted share
- Gross margin was 36.3 percent, up from 34.8 percent in the year-ago quarter
- Apple sold 2.6 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a four percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter
- Apple sold 10.2 million iPods during the quarter, representing a seven percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.
- Quarterly iPhones sold were 5.2 million, representing 626%(!!!) unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

Toshiba and Blu-ray: Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Following the previous announcement in June, one could have thought that Toshiba, after losing the war for blue laser DVD, would have finally decided to enter the Blu-ray market. But it does not seem to be so easy. According to the last rumors Toshiba denied previous report and refuses to comment further on Blu-ray. Except if a true breakthrough is unveiled, Toshiba will have to follow the Blu-ray market, as the latest jumped by 91% over the first six months of 2009. During a very short time, the following information was available from Apple servers:
According to this document, Apple plans to offer soon an iPhone App allowing users to manage their iDisk via their mobile phone. We think that if Apple did not release it yet, it is simply because they did not convince carriers (yet) to let this application use 3G networks. With iPhones and other communicating devices, the resources of 3G networks are becoming more and more saturated, requiring massive investment and upgrade to support the growing needs.

Apple confirms and expresses sadness over death of Chinese iPhone prototype handler
Reports have circulated the internet that a 25-year old worker at Chinese manufacturer Foxconn, which produces all the iPhone models for Apple, committed suicide last week following revelation that a fourth-generation iPhone prototype, one of the 16 iPhones he was responsible for, had gone missing. While not confirming the case being a suicide or the cause being the disappearing device, a spokesperson for the Cupertino-based company did release a statement corroborating the news of his death, saying that it is "saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death. 802.11n should go final by September, just when it's starting to feel slow
It's been a long, long long time coming, folks. Since 2004, the world at large has been waiting for 802.11n to finally go legit, and while we've been getting along just fine with Draft-N devices, the IEEE is inching closer to completion of the final specification. According to Bob Heile, the chairman of the IEEE 802.15 working group on Personal Area Networks, "802.11 [has been] granted unconditional approval to forward 11n to RevCom," which is currently scheduled to take place on September 11th in New Jersey. Cancelled MobileMe subscription keeps prompting for authentication
If you have recently cancelled your .Mac/MobileMe subscription, you may be having a problem where your Mac tries to connect to MobileMe and presents a log-in window at random. When this happens, entering the old MobileMe credentials does not work, and clicking cancel seems to be the only way to get rid of the window.

1930's rear projection TV in the UK still in service
It's really easy to forget how far we've come in the past 70 or so years, while at the same time how some things stay the same. This 12-inch CRT might be the oldest working TV in the UK and has even been modified so it could be connected to a modern day converter box to gain access to Freeview -- no word if the owner is paid up on his TV license though. But what's really interesting here is that it is a rear project TV with the main mirror being mounted on fold down lid to help it blend in with the home's decor when not in use -- and to think we thought the idea of finding ways to hide HDTVs was a new idea or something.

AMD's 40nm DirectX 11-based Evergreen GPUs could be ready for bloom by late September
Looks like AMD's heading off trail with its upcoming 40nm DirectX 11-based Evergreen series processors. Windows 7 RTM begins rollout August 6th, OEMs and some beta testers to get early headstart
So last we heard Windows 7 would be officially hitting RTM status some time this month, but as to when we'd be able to get our hands on it, turns out that's a very tricky question. According to the official Windows blog, OEMs will be able to get it approximately two days after the OS goes RTM, and beta testers who are already subscribed to TechNet can download RTM shortly after it happens for free. Independent software and hardware vendors can download via Microsoft Connect / MSDN on August 6th. Apple Q3 data shows shrinking Mac, iPod revenues
In tandem with a public statement, Apple has published a complete table of its Q3 results, which reveal individual details about Apple's revenues. Among these is an 8 percent drop in Mac revenue year-over-year, led by an 18 percent fall in desktop revenue, but compounded by a 2 percent drop in notebooks. Total Mac revenue was $3.329 billion, as compared to $3.610 billion in Q308.
