iPhone apps: My Eyes Only Photo, Layers, PCalc
My Eyes Only Photo ($3) allows users to password protect and encrypt images on an iPhone or iPod touch. Images can be imported into the application from an existing photo library or new photos can be directly imported from the iPhone's built-in camera. Users can organize images into multiple image groups and browse through groups one picture at a time or by using a thumbnail view.

Barnes & Noble intros e-books for iPhone, more

Barnes & Noble partners with Plastic Logic, becomes "exclusive eBookstore provider" for its e-reader
It's not exactly an e-book reader of its own as previously rumored, but Barnes & Noble's announced an alliance with Plastic Logic in which it'll servce as the "exclusive eBookstore provider" to the long-in-development e-reader, which unless we're playing with semantics here means any and all digital literature you're wanting to purchase on-device will come from BN itself. NY Public Library gets dedicated Wi-Fi room
The New York Public Library on Monday opened its converted Edna Barnes Salomon Room into a reading room for online users, adding Wi-Fi accessible Internet access. Up until now, the Beaux-Arts room has been used for special occasions only, but can now seat 128 people at specially made black walnut tables and brown leather chairs that match the maple wood floor.

OfficeTime 1.5 boasts improved data safety, bug fixes
OfficeTime has released v1.5 of its self-titled application. The program is used to track an individual's time usage, so it can later be analyzed and regimented. Zoom Q3 brings pro audio to pocket cams
Samson today hoped to bring quality to pocket video cameras and launched the Zoom Q3. It records video in standard VGA (640x480) but adds two large condenser microphones borrowed from the audio-only H4n, giving it 48kHz, 24-bit stereo sound. The enhanced audio can additionally focus on a particular point independently of the fixed-zoom lens to capture sound at a distance.

Canon 5D Mark II helmet mount attracts Hollywood's attention
Details are a bit light on this one, but the Planet 5D blog has received an email from the director of photography on 24, who himself received an email from the DP of Dollhouse, who passed on a video of a Canon 5D Mark II helmet mount built by the folks at Panavision. The rig was apparently designed specifically for use in fight scenes and other instances where a very close camera point-of-view is beneficial, and of course for "parachute drops and the like." Keepin' it real fake, part CCXXVII: Rolex watchphone is, in fact, neither
The Rolex watchphone is neither a Rolex nor a watchphone -- unless your definition includes handsets with a watch face embedded on the outside (and ours doesn't). But either way, it's probably safe to say that this bad boy does not sport a precision-made Swiss timepiece. Info: Process organization in OS X
OS X is built as a multitasking, multi-user environment in which resources are "shared" between various processes and tasks, which enables simultaneous processing of tasks. Essentially, the whole system is a bunch of independent processes, and while some rely on others, only a minimum number of them are dependent on another. As such, many can be quit and relaunched without harming the system, but sometimes if a process is not coded properly, resources can be used up rather quickly and cause the system to hang. There are several indicators when this happens in OS X, including the affected application (or dependent applications) freezing and running slowly, and displaying the infamous spinning beach ball cursor.

BlackBerry software for Mac to support iTunes sync
RIM on Monday announced that its BlackBerry desktop software is coming to the Mac platform later this summer. The program will allow the company's smartphones to sync with iTunes content, calendars, contacts, notes and tasks. Users will also be able to update their smartphone's firmware directly from the Mac interface, or back up content with encryption.

Apple Q3 results expected to surpass estimates
Apple should beat some earlier predictions in its Q3 2009 results, set to be announced on Tuesday. Thomson Financial observes that consensus estimates have been consistently rising, and now stand at roughly $8.18 billion in revenue, with $1.16 in earnings per share. Apple by contrast has maintained a conservative guidance, calling for EPS of 95 cents on between $7.7 and $7.9 billion in revenue.

URC debuts MX-5000 universal remote with haptic feedback

The NYTimes today asks a pretty interesting question. If Japanese mobile devices, which are years ahead of their overseas counterparts, are so advanced why aren't they a success in Europe, the US or even in China and Korea?
Japanese developers are jealous of the runaway global popularity of the Apple iPhone and App Store, which have pushed the American and European cellphone industry away from its obsession with hardware specifications to software. “This is the kind of phone I wanted to make,” Mr. Natsuno [developer of the i-Mode network] said, playing with his own iPhone 3G.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager coming to Mac in September
Mac users, rejoice -- well, the BlackBerry users in the lot of you, anyway. RIM's been infamous over the years for all but ignoring Mac support for its devices, throwing out the occasional bone like Media Sync, but they're now going big with a full-fledged Desktop Manager supporting Mac OS 10.5.5 and above when it launches sometime. The big sticking point right now is that RIM isn't talking about an availability date, all we know is that it'll happen some time in September -- but when that date comes, you'll have a suite that's able to sync iTunes, add and remove apps, perform firmware updates, create backups and restore from them, and manage multiple BlackBerrys at the same time.

Creating a new user via the command line.
In Mac OS X , the primary way to create a user is to go to the Accounts system preferences and click the "+" button. The procedure from there is pretty self-explanatory. However, this can be done at the terminal prompt as well, which may be useful if you are logged in remotely to your system via the command line, or if the Accounts system preference pane is malfunctioning.

ASUS reportedly pushes Eee PC T101 tablet back to September
Last we had heard, ASUS' Eee PC T101 tablet still had a place on ASUS' massive Eee PC roadmap, and it had apparently been at one point on track for a release this June. Well, that obviously didn't happen and, according to DigiTimes, the device's future may be even more uncertain. WSJ: Smartphones generating huge profits for Apple and RIM
The Wall Steet Journal (paywall) notes that Apple and RIM are making disporportionately high profits on their smartphones while the rest of the industry is in a race to the bottom (sound like NetBook vs. Laptop market?). Interestingly, Nokia is having significant issues with Smartphone marketshare but is still ahead on the profit curve.
Apple and RIM accounted for only 3% of all cellphones sold in the world last year but 35% of operating profits, according to Deutsche Bank analyst Brian Modoff. The disparity will become even starker this year when, he estimates, the two will take 5% of the market in unit terms but 58% of total operating profits.

TerreStar successfully completes first call on new satellite

Toshiba intros Wi-Fi digital photo frames
Toshiba on Monday announced it has partnered up with FrameChannel, a web-based digital photo frame integration service, to bring weather, news and sports info, as well as uploaded photos to its new line of Digital Media Frames. Universal bringing BD-Live integration to the iPhone, irony to starving children
Although Apple still hasn't managed to achieve feature parity with any of its competitors by enabling Blu-ray playback in OS X, it looks like Universal's bringing the mountain to the Mac -- or at least the iPhone. At first, the upcoming special edition of Fast and Furious will feature integration with a special iPhone / iPod touch app that'll allow viewers to control a 360-degree views of the cars in the "Virtual Car Garage," but later Universal releases will feature the ability to control movie playback, read annotations while watching your flick, and even download ancillary video content for later playback on the go. WSJ: Smartphones generating huge profits for Apple and RIM
The Wall Steet Journal (paywall) notes that Apple and RIM are making disporportionately high profits on their smartphones while the rest of the industry is in a race to the bottom (sound like NetBook vs. Laptop market?). Interestingly, Nokia is having significant issues with Smartphone marketshare but is still ahead on the profit curve.
Apple and RIM accounted for only 3% of all cellphones sold in the world last year but 35% of operating profits, according to Deutsche Bank analyst Brian Modoff. The disparity will become even starker this year when, he estimates, the two will take 5% of the market in unit terms but 58% of total operating profits.

If you head over to Surfin Safari, Webkit's blog of new features, you'll find some neat new HTML5 3-D tricks that Safari 4 (including the latest Webkit builds and Mobile Safari on the iPhone) can do without breaking a CPU sweat. We had our doubts (and still do to a degree) but this is the kind of animation that makes Flash seem a little less "necessary".
In a non-scientific test, running Morphing Power Cubes, the browser used 5% of the CPU. Flash usually starts at around 30% just to be activated. These examples also run incredibly smooth on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Microsoft, in its attempt to hold of Google Apps, is issuing an update to its Office 2008 Macintosh productivity software which has new features for connecting to SharePoint servers and to Microsoft's Office Live Workspaces. Amazon hat am Freitag auf Wunsch eines Verlags zwei E-Books des britischen Schriftstellers George Orwell zurückgezogen. Einem Bericht der New York Times zufolge verfügte der Verlag nicht über die benötigten Rechte für eine Veröffentlichung als E-Book. Amazon hat daraufhin schon verkaufte Exemplare aus den Nutzerkonten seiner Kunden und damit auch von deren E-Book-Readern Kindle gelöscht. Nach Pinball Dreams ist nun auch der Nachfolger Pinball Fantasies im App Store erschienen. Wie im ersten Teil gibt es vier Tische, die sowohl im Quer- als auch Hochformat gespielt werden können. Palm Pre vs. 3GS
Die Mobil-Spezialisten von comScore haben Suchstatistiken im Kontext der Markteinführung von Palms "Pre" untersucht. Das vielfach als "iPhone-Killer" apostrophierte Pre wurde am 06. Juni verfügbar und u. a. vom Mobilfunkanbieter Sprint mit einer großen Kampagne ("Now Network") beworben. Allein am Tag der ersten Schaltung hat die Kampagne 13 Mio. Menschen erreicht, was u. a. auch darin resultierte, dass bis ca. Mitte Juni ganz massiv mit Suchmaschinen nach diesem Thema gesucht wurde. Interessanterweise fällt das Abebben der Pre-Suchaktivität zeitlich mit der Verfügbarkeit von iPhone OS 3.0 am 17.06. und vom iPhone 3GS am 19.07. zusammen. Beispielsweise seit Mai bis zur ersten Juni-Woche haben nach comScore-Angaben regelmäßig ca. eine Million Menschen pro Woche nach "iPhone" gesucht. In der Woche vor dem 3GS-Launch hat sich diese Zahl auf 2,3 Mio. Menschen mehr als verdoppelt. Mozilla dementiert Berichte über kritische Sicherheitslücke in Firefox 3.5.1
Mit dem Ende letzter Woche erschienenen Update auf Firefox 3.5.1 hatte Mozilla mehrere, teils kritische Sicherheitslücken geschlossen. If you head over to Surfin Safari, Webkit's blog of new features, you'll find some neat new HTML5 3-D tricks that Safari 4 (including the latest Webkit builds and Mobile Safari on the iPhone) can do without breaking a CPU sweat. We had our doubts (and still do to a degree) but this is the kind of animation that makes Flash seem a little less "necessary". In a non-scientific test, running Morphing Power Cubes, the browser used 5% of the CPU. Flash usually starts at around 30% just to be activated. Nokia throws "Xseries" into the ring, too?
You know the saying "where there's smoke, there's fire"? Yeah, well, this is kind of like that, except its.. uh, "where there's Cseries, there's Xseries." Stay with us: on Saturday we reported that Nokia had filed for a trademark on the "Cseries" name, ostensibly for a new line of smartphones, MIDs, or netbooks to complement its existing Nseries and Eseries lines. PCI Express 3.0 in June 2010
Originally planned for the end of 2009, the new PCI Express format will only be officially released in June 2010. So it will only be at the beginning of 2011 that the first computers based on such format will be available. Technically, this is not a real issue, as the current PCI Express 2.0 format is not a limiting factor for current graphic cards. It might become the bottleneck of the system when massive usage of GPGPU will push needs for larger and bi-directional bandwidth. Indeed, data sent to the GPU will not be displayed, but will have to be exchanged both way with the CPU.

Amazon Big Brother Is Watching You
Last week, Amazon deleted some files saved on customers Kindle without any notice or explanation. Customers account were credited back for those deleted files.
It seems that Amazon sold some novels or electronic books without having the rights or proper agreements to do so. In such case, it would then be considered as counterfeit. So, the famous online store decided to remotely delete all those files on customers kindles to avoid any legal action from the right owners. The best part of this story is that among the list of books illegally sold was the famous anticipation assay from George Orwell, "1984" aka Big Brother
IT is always a bit scary to see files purchased "legally" from online store to be modified, edited or even deleted by the store or any third party. You think you legally own it, and can make use of it, but not the dead music online store from Yahoo

The company Tsera LLC launched a legal action against Apple, Microsoft, LG, Philips, B&O, etc. In summary all companies designing/manufacturing devices based on a display being used as a touch sensitive surface, a technology covered by the patent 6,639,584. Integrated circuits with no standby power could be in use by year's end
There's certainly no shortage of company's working to make electronics of all sorts more energy efficient, but NEC and Rohm Co now say that they're on the verge of a breakthrough that could change things in a big way, and we could possibly see it in "practical use" by the end of this year. As Tech-On! reports, both companies are hard at work on integrated circuits that consume no power at all when they're in standby mode, and turn themselves on only when power is needed. That's apparently possible by making the entire chip nonvolatile, as opposed to many current chips that only use nonvolatile merged memory. MobileMe scraped to expose Find My iPhone information
For those who want to automatically update their whereabouts using the iPhone's GPS, there is now a utility that can run on an external server to log your movements. Tyler Hall, a Yahoo programmer by day, has developed some code called Sosumi that pulls the Locate My iPhone information on a regular basis (5 minutes in this case) and can update a service like Yahoo's Fire Eagle. The code also allows you to send warnings and messages to the iPhone using the MobileMe commands.
